Chemistry Annual Research Symposium
Rare-earth niobates and tantalates are refractory materials that have been exploited in applications involving ion conductivity, photo-catalysis, and luminescence, both in doped and un-doped forms.
In general, refractory oxides have high melting points therefore synthesis of single crystals are more challenging. For example LnNbO4 can be grown readily by melt techniques such as Czochralski pulling ~1300 ˚C. However during the cooling crystal quality degraded resulting low quality crystals therefore high temperature melting techniques are not suitable for bulk single crystals growth.

Entrepreneurship, Creativity, And Local Food Systems: Essays On Regional Economic Development In South Carolina, Kristen Lientz
All Dissertations
Within the existing economic development literature, there is a well-established linkage between the presence of skilled human capital and economic growth. A subset of this literature has focused on the role that a specific type of skilled human capital, known as the “creative class,†may play in facilitating regional economic development. This dissertation builds upon the existing creative class literature by examining the factors that have attracted the creative class to the state of South Carolina. In addition, this research gives special attention to the entrepreneurial activities of creative class professionals who engage in small-scale farming. Recent interest surrounding the …

Artificial Kingdoms, Lindsey Elsey
Artificial Kingdoms, Lindsey Elsey
All Theses
Fairy or folk tales and fantasy appear to be innocuous means of entertainment in contemporary society. Often relegated as pap for children, this view belies the gruesome origins, cultural significance, and means of personal expression and identity that is afforded to the author and reader/audience through the construction of fantasies. Through the creation of environments and experiences that center on porcelain vessels and sculpture, I explore the expression of uncomfortable desires and situations in the guise of fantasy. In some instances folk and fairy tales act as a means of escapism; an expression of desire for the fleeting and the …
Decellularized Bovine Nucleus Pulposus As A Biomimetic Scaffold For Intervertebral Disc Regeneration, Christopher Fernandez
Decellularized Bovine Nucleus Pulposus As A Biomimetic Scaffold For Intervertebral Disc Regeneration, Christopher Fernandez
All Theses
Low back pain (LBP) is a significant burden with a lifetime prevalence of 84% and estimated expenditures of $85.9 billion.[1,2] Although LBP is multifactorial; it has been shown that LBP can originate from degenerating intervertebral discs (IVDs); a process which initiates in the nucleus pulposus (NP); a hydrated tissue primarily composed of type 2 collagen and proteoglycan. Current therapies for IVD degeneration (IDD) are palliative and merely delay surgical management. While these procedures may relieve pain temporarily, they fail to address the underlying cause of degeneration and make no attempt to regenerate the effected tissue. Additional concerns with the use …

Analysis Of Diffusion In Heat Seals Using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, Mark Hendrickson
All Theses
Heat sealing is one of several methods used to weld thermoplastic materials in packaging. Heat seals were made between Dow 501i LDPE and DuPont Nucrel 1202HC poly (ethylene co-methacrylic acid). The seals were exposed to sodium hydroxide solution so that the methacrylic acid sites of the DuPont Nucrel 1202HC were neutralized with a sodium ion. This was done to make diffusion measurements. Two side heated tooling sealing was used to make seals at 40 psi (276kPa), 1.0 second dwell, and temperatures ranging from 200oF (93.3oC) to 300oF (148.9oC). Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, a function of scanning electron microscopy, was used …
Eye Tracking Recycle Labels On Packaging: Are Attitudes And Behaviors A Predictor Of Viewing Them?, Valerie Smith
Eye Tracking Recycle Labels On Packaging: Are Attitudes And Behaviors A Predictor Of Viewing Them?, Valerie Smith
All Theses
In the United States, the use of the chasing arrows is the most recognizable label for consumers to interpret the recyclability of packaging and other materials. Yet, the use of the label can be used interchangeably for different purposes, which may lead to misinterpretation of the label. Recently, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) revamped the recycle label to provide more information, avoid confusion, and misinterpretation. Recycle rates have only increased seven percent in the past decade. Furthermore, there is a lack of research about the utility of recycle labels in efforts to increase recycling rates. The over-arching goals of this …

An Examination Of Psychological Climate Linking Mechanisms Across The Strategic Priorities Of Health And Stress, Alec Munc
All Dissertations
Given that employee health and well-being represent a significant source of financial costs for organizations, this dissertation seeks to address some of the pathways through which organizational efforts to improve physical and mental health may operate. This study drew from a model of safety climate (Neal & Griffin, 2000) to propose that psychological climate exerts in influence on employee health and well-being through the joint moderators of knowledge/motivation and behaviors. The model also extended beyond the typical climate linking mechanisms to include moderators both individual (behavioral activation & behavioral inhibition systems) and contextual (workplace physical exposure). Using a two-wave prospective …
Leisure, Obesity And Weight Loss: An Exploration Of Leisure, The Public Health Ecological Model Of Obesity And Identity Theory, Weber Player
Leisure, Obesity And Weight Loss: An Exploration Of Leisure, The Public Health Ecological Model Of Obesity And Identity Theory, Weber Player
All Dissertations
Obesity is a global health crisis with complex causal relationships. From the mid 1990s to 2010, obesity related research in the clinical and social sciences has exploded. This expansion has resulted in a proliferation of obesity-related articles published in top-tier journals and the creation of new journals solely devoted to obesity research. In contrast within leisure scholarship, a review of leisure journals reveals that published research on the relationship of leisure, obesity and weight loss is minimal. However, numerous leisure scholarship/theory principles are relevant to obesity prevention and treatment. Similarly, public health officials have developed numerous systems-oriented multilevel framework models …
Iterative Design And Testing Of A Mobile Application To Support Food Consumption Monitoring And Decision Making, Melva James
Iterative Design And Testing Of A Mobile Application To Support Food Consumption Monitoring And Decision Making, Melva James
All Dissertations
Food overconsumption is a major contributor to weight gain leading to obesity. Constant exposure to larger amounts of food and beverage has caused many individuals to experience “portion distortion,†the perception that bigger portion sizes are appropriate for consumption at a single sitting. Independently and accurately changing this perception can be very difficult even if one has a desire to do so. In response to these observations, we developed and tested Picture-Perfect Portions, a mobile application designed to combat overconsumption, at the individual level, by leveraging the power of simple visualizations to help adults understand and adjust their food consumption …

Interacting Partners Of The Sunn Symbiotic Kinase, Ashley Dawn Zearfoss Crook
All Dissertations
The control of nodule number in legumes is primarily accomplished through a complex systemic signaling pathway termed autoregulation of nodulation (AON). The protein kinase SUNN, a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase, exhibits shoot control of AON. I show subcellular localization of SUNN to the plasma membrane and specifically to the plasmodesmata, a prime location for systemic signaling. To aid in better understanding the mechanisms of signaling in AON, I used different approaches to identify potential protein-protein interactions involving SUNN, including candidate genes, exploratory proteomics, and forward genetic screens. Candidate interactors, including CLAVATA2 (CLV2), CORYNE (CRN) and guanine exchange factors of the …
