Smart & Savvy Students' (SSS) main goal is to convert scientific psychological articles to understandable pieces of information for general audiences. We have a Twitter feed, Facebook page, and Instagram to spread the information to Clemson's student body and other audiences that we post to 3 to 5 times a week. Each tweet contains a 140-character tip written in a dialogue format. The tweets include links to the Facebook page, which has more information. The Facebook page provides links to scientific sources that support our claims. These links provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the topics. In …

Dyestuffs are pervasive pollutants, especially in areas where leather and textile industries are in operation. There is a need to develop effective and efficient strategies for the removal of these pollutants from drinking water and the environment. Solid supports have been exploited extensively as convenient supports for molecular functional groups capable of selective absorption/reaction with solution-phase species followed by facile removal of the solid-supported material from the solution. This Creative Inquiry project involves modification of magnetic silica-coated magnetic microspheres and commercial resins with a variety of phosphonium species with the aim of using these materials for adsorption of anionic dyes …

Studies suggest that in addition to genetic factors, environmental factors such as diet and the gastrointestinal microbiota influence the onset of Type I Diabetes (T1D). Bacteroides are considered to be normal members in a healthy human colon that play an important role in digestion of complex polysaccharides, yet recent research articles have suggested that the normal proportion of Bacteroides species increases significantly in genetically susceptible children before the onset of T1D. Acarbose is an alpha amylase inhibitor that is approved for human use. We hypothesize that acarbose will also interact with Bacteroides alpha-amylase enzymes and therefore has potential as a …

This Creative Inquiry research focuses on new and upcoming cell culturing and tissue engineering methods. Three projects are underway in this CI, each investigating a problem faced with tissue engineering. The first of these projects focuses on growing 3D cancer cell spheroids for use in drug screening. Current, 2D methods for cell culturing limit intracellular interactions and cells do not mimic the cells found in the human body. Two human breast cancer cell lines are being cultured in 3D spheroids to imitate in vivo tumors. The spheroids are chemically and mechanically analyzed to determine likeness to realistic tumors and are …

Density Functional Theory Simulations Of Mofs Encapsulated-Catalyzed Systems, Jiazhou Zhu, Rachel B. Getman
Density Functional Theory Simulations Of Mofs Encapsulated-Catalyzed Systems, Jiazhou Zhu, Rachel B. Getman
Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium
The research is mainly on Computational Design of Highly Selective Transition Metal Catalysts Encapsulated by Metal-‐Organic Frameworks for Butane Oxidation to 1-‐Butanol. Metal Organic Framework (MOF) grown over a heterogeneous catalyst. Pores of framework allow only certain molecules of correct size, orientation, or chemical properties to access catalyst. The framework will force molecule into desired orientation where only the terminal atoms will “see” the catalyst. In our simulation we would like to use the helium ring to simulate the MOFs pores, since He is inert and exhibits the no chemical reactivity. The reaction we are looking into is butane oxidation …

Carbon Cone Electrodes For Selection, Manipulation And Lysis Of Single Cells, Rucha Natu, Monsur Islam, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Here we present initial experiments towards an integrated platform for single cell selection, manipulation and lysis. An array of polarized conical carbon electrodes can be dipped in a cell culture, trap cells of interest using dielectrophoresis and transport them to specific locations where they can be lyzed electrically to extract intracellular components from targeted particles over specific locations. What we contribute in this work is modeling of the electric field and its gradient around carbon cones, as well as initial cone fabrication results. Ongoing work is on demonstrating cell trapping and lysis using these conical electrodes by only varying the …

This Creative Inquiry project studied post-game Twitter messages (i.e., "Tweets") in the aftermath of closely contested rivalry games in college football/basketball to learn more about how fans react to victories/defeats using social media. We aimed to determine whether or not these reactions would mirror the predictions from thedisposition theory of sports spectatorship (Zillmann, Bryant, & Sapolsky, 1989). According to this theory, enjoyment of sports will be maximized when an intensely liked team defeats an intensely disliked team. Conversely, when an intensely liked team loses to an intensely disliked team, "negative enjoyment" occurs. Using Radian6 software in the Social Media …

Research on family travel decision making has shown that the roles of husband, wife and children have evolved through the years. In a research conducted about 40 years ago husbands were found more dominant in travel decisions (Jenkins, 1978). This study was replicated by Litvin, Xu and Kang (2004) more recently and a decrease in husband’s influence and increase in joint decisions were observed. Local food preference being one of the decisions made during travel, creates positive impact on the region through backward linkages between local food producers and tourism industry (Cohen, & Avieli, 2004; Torres, 2002; Telfer & Wall, …
Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Membranes For Water Purification, Nithinart Chitpong, Scott M. Husson
Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Membranes For Water Purification, Nithinart Chitpong, Scott M. Husson
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Global water demand continues to increase because of population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Since there are limited natural water resources, water purification systems play a critical societal role. Membrane technologies are used widely to improve water quality for beneficial use. Therefore, high-performance, nanofiber-based ion-exchange membranes were prepared for removal of heavy metals from impaired waters. Our hypothesis was that such membranes would have high metal ion capacities resulting from large surface area-to-volume ratios and high water permeability relative to barrier-type membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. The nanofiber membranes were produced by electrospinning cellulose acetate nanofiber mats, which …

Focus on Creative Inquiry
The primary purpose of this research is to determine if there is an association between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Literature suggests frustrations with misunderstandings between caregivers and clinicians about this problem. If a correlation is identified this information could assist caregivers of children with ASD to talk with clinicians about GI problems. Radian 6 software will be used to analyze target words from social media posts. Using this method, the research team can collect descriptions from social media of the "lived experience" of persons with ASD and their caregivers. Data will be collected for 2 weeks, …

Biophysical Interaction Between Nanoparticles And Biomolecules, Slaven Radic
All Dissertations
In the last two decades nanotechnology market has undergone remarkable growth. Breakthroughs in nanomaterial synthesis increased diverse nanomaterials production and subsequently their application. Owing to its large surface to volume ratio and remarkable physical properties not seen in the bulk materials, nanoparticles are finding emerging use in industry and medicine. Hence, it is expectable that at some point these nanomaterials will end up released into the environment and interact with bio systems. The purpose of this dissertation is to elicit implications of nanomaterial transformation once it gets inside biological milieu.
