Research indicates employers use social media, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to make decision regarding would-be employees. A scarce amount of academic research specifically examines the decision-making processes employers use when using social media to select the best job applicant for the job. This study focuses on how social media impacts hiring processes, investigating the impact of political attitudes expressed on social media impact managers’ evaluations of how “hireable” job candidates are. This study also examines how individuating information, also known as job-related information, presented on social media influences employer decisions to hire job candidates. To test the research model, …

Hybrid Hydrogels For Tissue Engineering, Ho Joon Lee May 2015

Hybrid Hydrogels For Tissue Engineering, Ho Joon Lee

All Dissertations

Hydrogels have been widely investigated for their versatility in biomedical applications such as tissue engineering scaffolds and minimally invasive vehicles for site-specific delivery of bioactive molecules. Hybrid hydrogels combine the strengths of intrinsic bioactivity from naturally derived materials and superior control over network physical and chemical properties from synthetic materials. The most prominent approach in three-dimensional (3D) hybrid matrices is the use of MMP-sensitive peptides derived from native extracellular matrix molecules to crosslink synthetic polymers. These peptide-based techniques have several limitations such as high cost, limited mechanical properties, and reduced degradation kinetics that limit the network crosslinking density and mechanical …

Carbon Nanotube-Enzyme Conjugates For The Fabrication Of Diagnostic Biosensors, Olukayode Adedamola Karunwi

All Dissertations

The fabrication of multi-analyte biotransducers continues to be a major technical challenge when the length scales of the individual transducer elements are on the order of microns Generation-3 (Gen-3) biosensors and advanced enzyme biofuel cells will benefit from direct electron transfer to oxidoreductases facilitated by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Direct electron transfer helps to mitigate errors from the instability in oxygen tension, eliminate use of a mediator and produce a device with low operating potential close to the redox potential of the enzymes. Supramolecular conjugates of SWNT-glucose oxidase (GOx-SWNT) may be produced via ultrasonic processing. Using a Plackett-Burman experimental design …

Investigating Polymer Based Scaffolds For Urinary Bladder Tissue Engineering, Srikanth Sivaraman May 2015

Investigating Polymer Based Scaffolds For Urinary Bladder Tissue Engineering, Srikanth Sivaraman

All Dissertations

Current surgical treatments for urinary bladder disorders rely on the use of autologous intestinal segments and xenografts such as small intestinal submucosa, which suffer from various complications including mechanical mismatch and graft shrinkage. Despite early promises of bladder tissue engineering, a recent report of unsuccessful clinical trials suggests that the technology needs further improvement and evaluation through animal models of bladder dysfunction. Therefore, the objective of this doctoral dissertation was to characterize a viable bladder tissue scaffold (patch) which mimics the mechanical properties of the bladder, maintains the phenotype of the BSMC seeded in it and finally, tested in vivo …

Killer Cell Activation By A Novel Multifunctional Protein: An Immuno/Gene Therapy For Cancer, Ashlee Tietje May 2015

Killer Cell Activation By A Novel Multifunctional Protein: An Immuno/Gene Therapy For Cancer, Ashlee Tietje

All Dissertations

One of the characteristics of advanced tumors is the evasion of the immune system. There are multiple methods that tumor cells employ to achieve this including reducing the expression of activating ligands on the cell surface and a shift in the tumor microenvironment toward pro-tumor cytokines. The purpose of this research is to develop a novel bifunctional fusion protein that will target these two deficiencies in the tumor microenvironment and activate killer cells that are already present. The proposed protein combines the extracellular domain of a ligand for the killer cell activating receptor NKG2D and Interleukin-12 (IL-12). It is hypothesized …

Perceptions Of Career And Technology Education Among African American Students, Laura Smith May 2015

Perceptions Of Career And Technology Education Among African American Students, Laura Smith

All Dissertations

Recent studies have found that Career and Technology Education can lower dropout rates among high school students (Stone and Lewis, 2012). Students that are enrolled in Career and Technical Education are exposed to a plethora of career opportunities that they may not be cognizant of without the learning environment found at Career and Technology Centers. African American students participate in Career and Technology Education more than any other racial or ethnic group (Silverberg, 2004). Because Career and Technology Education has been found to be an important aspect of increasing graduation rates and African American students participate more than any other …

New Americans' Perspectives On Retention And Adaptation Of Childrearing Practices In Vermont: Building Intercultural Relationships, Julie Richards

All Dissertations

With the prevalence of global migration, many communities are becoming increasingly diverse. However, along with the benefits of diversity, cultural divides can emerge. Members of the dominant culture may not be familiar with, nor understand, cultural practices of the newly arrived community member, and vice versa. This dissertation research sought to identify various cultural childrearing practices as well as New Americans' perspectives on childrearing within Vermont. Barriers and supports for cultural retention and adaptation were identified, along with potential contributions that New Americans can offer their communities in understanding who they are and what they bring to the childrearing experience.

Understanding The Fusion And Maturation Of Tissue Engineered Linear Blood Vessels Using Magnetic Cellular Spheroids, Timothy R. Olsen May 2015

Understanding The Fusion And Maturation Of Tissue Engineered Linear Blood Vessels Using Magnetic Cellular Spheroids, Timothy R. Olsen

All Dissertations

Cellular spheroids are attractive for tissue fabrication due to having precise control over cell and extracellular matrix (ECM) composition, the ability for upscaled production and repeatability, their three-dimensional nature and the fact that spheroids will produce their own ECM over time. A critical process in the fabrication of complex tissue structures with cellular spheroids is related to their fusion and maturation. Tissue fusion is a self-assembly process in which two or more distinct cell populations, or tissues, make contact and coalesce to form a single cohesive structure. Maturation of tissue engineered constructs involves developing the mechanical properties and ECM compositions …

Trilayer Tissue Engineered Heart Valves For Aortic Valve Replacement, Michael Paul Jaeggli May 2015

Trilayer Tissue Engineered Heart Valves For Aortic Valve Replacement, Michael Paul Jaeggli

All Dissertations

Heart valve disease often progresses asymptomatically until valve damage has advanced to the point where replacement is unavoidable. Unfortunately, current valve replacements - including mechanical, bioprosthetic and autografts - have serious drawbacks, which often require replacement surgeries or lifelong anticoagulant therapy. The field of tissue engineering aims to overcome these drawbacks by combining scaffolds, stem cells, and chemical and physical stimuli to produce living tissues. The aortic heart valve has a unique structure composed of three discrete layers – fibrosa, spongiosa, and ventricularis - that work together in concert with the resident valvular interstitial cells to maintain a functioning valve. …

Setting The Mood: An Examination Of The Roles Of Romance-Related Mood, Situational Similarity, And Character Attribute Similarity In Selective Exposure To Romantic Comedies, Jessica R. Frampton May 2015

Setting The Mood: An Examination Of The Roles Of Romance-Related Mood, Situational Similarity, And Character Attribute Similarity In Selective Exposure To Romantic Comedies, Jessica R. Frampton

All Theses

Two studies were conducted in order to explore how romance-related mood, situational similarity, and character attribute similarity affect selective exposure to romantic comedies. Eight hypotheses were proposed based on traditional mood management theory (MMT). MMT predicts that people make media selection choices based on a desire to alter a negative mood state and achieve a positive mood state (Zillmann, 1988; Zillmann & Bryant, 1985). For this study in particular, MMT predicts that people in a negative romance-related mood would choose to avoid media content that reminds them of their negative romance-related mood. Content could remind participants of their negative romance-related …

Sensations Recalibrated, Ayako Abe-Miller

All Theses

In my art, I work within a Taoist and Shinto-based context to provide opportunities for the individual to discover aspects of her/his pre-socialized self. The notion of the pre-socialized self, referred to as the innocent self in both Taoism and Shinto, is expressed through a vital force generated from one's total being. The vital force that emits from one’s entire body and soul is called Tamashii in Japanese.

I am interested in evoking my audience’s pure Tamashii that is hidden or dormant in their current lifestyle by providing an opportunity for the audience to become more aware of their mind, …
