Commemoration And Controversy: The Memorialization Of Denmark Vesey In Charleston, South Carolina, Sarah Katherine Dykens

All Theses

The commemoration of contested historical figures is a topic that is increasingly addressed by preservationists, historians, and those in local government. One such figure is Denmark Vesey, whose failed slave insurrection plot in 1822 forever altered the social and physical fabric of the United States. The ways in which this polarizing figure has been memorialized in Charleston, South Carolina, speak to the multivalent nature of Vesey himself as well as the shifting and complex racial politics in Charleston. In studying the four major commemorative efforts for Vesey that exist in Charleston, this thesis sheds light on the ways in which …

Value And Truth In Literature: The Critic Versus The Reader From Henry James' Perspective As Applied To Reader Response Theory, Marilyn M. Vickery May 2015

Value And Truth In Literature: The Critic Versus The Reader From Henry James' Perspective As Applied To Reader Response Theory, Marilyn M. Vickery

All Theses

Based on Reader Response Theory, without an audience and interpretation a piece of literature does not have value and does not elicit a truth. It has to communicate. Further, Henry James in his work is not only saying that interpretation by a reader is of vital importance in creating value and truth, he implies that there are different types of readers and he specifically, in the works cited, seems to differentiate between the role of a literary critic and a casual reader. He creates narrators at varied levels of education and knowledge on purpose to elicit from the reader different …

Characterizing The Novel Gig Operon In Legionella Pneumophila , Kathleen Jwanowski May 2015

Characterizing The Novel Gig Operon In Legionella Pneumophila , Kathleen Jwanowski

All Theses

Legionella pneumophila is the number one cause of waterborne outbreaks in the US. It contaminates man-made water systems increasing exposure risk for Legionnaire’s Disease. Copper/silver ionization is one common method for managing L. pneumophila in water systems, but bacterial response mechanisms to these metals are not well described in Legionella. We identified an operon, lpg2105-2108, that is homologous to known gold/copper response genes in Cupriavidus metallidurans. Using a GFP reporter gene system, we measured transcriptional activity of the lpg2105-2108 operon in L. pneumophila strain Lp02 in response to 20µM or 50µM of HAuCl4 or CuSO4 in planktonic and biofilm cultures. …

Endothelialization Using Protein Substrates And Hydrogels For Aortic Valve Applications, Elizabeth A. Fontaine May 2015

Endothelialization Using Protein Substrates And Hydrogels For Aortic Valve Applications, Elizabeth A. Fontaine

All Theses

Aortic valve disease is currently the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity in the United States.1 In 2003, approximately 290,000 patients required heart valve replacement and that number is estimated to continue to rise as the average age of the population continues to increase.2 However, the current valve replacement options have multiple limitations. Tissue engineering hopes to address these shortcomings by providing a viable valve that more closely mimics the native valve, structurally and functionally.3 An ideal valve replacement should contain endothelial and interstitial cells, with the ability to remodel the extra-cellular matrix. While tissue-engineered heart valves are not uncommon in …

Comparison Of Analytical, Numerical And Semi-Analytical Methods For Modeling Matrix Diffusion Effects In Aquitards, Wenwen Wang May 2015

Comparison Of Analytical, Numerical And Semi-Analytical Methods For Modeling Matrix Diffusion Effects In Aquitards, Wenwen Wang

All Theses

The invasion of dissolved chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) into low permeability zones can cause contaminant persistence above maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) in adjacent aquifers due to the phenomenon of matrix diffusion. Numerical studies have been conducted to simulate matrix diffusion effects between aquifers and aquitards. However, existing numerical approaches for simulating matrix diffusion of CVOCs require fine discretization of the aquifer and aquitard into tens of layers of grid blocks, resulting in large computational effort. Considering the inefficiency of numerical approaches, a semi-analytical method was developed to only discretize the aquifer and mathematically approximate the diffusive response in the …

Effects Of Anti-Anxiety Drugs And Other Anthropogenic Contaminants On Fathead Minnow Behavior And Brain Chemistry, Anna Lee Mcleod

All Theses

A majority of American adults in today’s society are treated for anxiety with anti-anxiety medications. Some of these prescribed drugs are neither efficiently metabolized by the human body nor removed by wastewater treatment plants before they reach streams and rivers and so are often detected in the aquatic environment in trace concentrations. Once present in surface waters, they have the potential to cause adverse effects for aquatic organisms, including changes in both behavior and brain chemistry. Previous work has shown that upon exposure to 150µg/L fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant, hybrid striped bass (M. saxatilis x M. chrysops) …

Perceiving Soft Tissue Break Points In The Presence Of Friction, Bliss Altenhoff May 2015

Perceiving Soft Tissue Break Points In The Presence Of Friction, Bliss Altenhoff

All Dissertations

In minimally invasive surgery (MIS), surgeons face several perceptual challenges due to the remote interaction with the environment, such as distorted haptic feedback through the instruments due to friction produced from the rubber trocar sealing mechanisms at the incision site. As a result, surgeons sometimes unintentionally damage healthy tissues during MIS due to excessive force. Research has demonstrated that useful information is available in the haptic array regarding soft tissues, which allows novices to successfully perceive the penetration distance remaining until a material will fail based on displacement and reactionary forces of simulated tissues using a haptic invariant, Distance-to-Break (DTB). …

Seriously Playful And Playfully Serious: The Helpfulness Of Humorous Parody, Michael Richard Lucas May 2015

Seriously Playful And Playfully Serious: The Helpfulness Of Humorous Parody, Michael Richard Lucas

All Dissertations

In the following work I create and define the parameters for a specific form of humorous parody. I highlight specific problematic narrative figures that circulate the public sphere and reinforce our serious narrative expectations. However, I demonstrate how critical public pedagogies are able to disrupt these problematic narrative expectations. Humorous parodic narratives are especially equipped to help us in such situations when they work as a critical public/classroom pedagogy, a form of critical rhetoric, and a form of mass narrative therapy. These findings are supported by a rhetorical analysis of these parodic narratives, as I expand upon their ability to …

A Survey Of Protozoan Parasite Hexokinases: Characterization Studies And Potential For Therapeutic Interventions, Michael Timothy Harris May 2015

A Survey Of Protozoan Parasite Hexokinases: Characterization Studies And Potential For Therapeutic Interventions, Michael Timothy Harris

All Dissertations

Protozoan parasites find a glucose rich environment when inhabiting the human host. As a consequence of this glucose rich environment, many parasites have evolved streamlined metabolisms that repress more complex pathways (such as the TCA cycle) in favor of high glycolytic activity, making glycolytic enzymes potential drug targets. The parasites also need to produce glycoprotein coats to shield themselves from the immune system, nucleotides for rapid proliferation, and reducing equivalents for redox homeostasis. The first enzyme of the glycolytic pathway, hexokinase (HK), is critical to the biosynthesis of all of these molecules, representing a here-to-fore underappreciated drug target. Herein I …

Understanding The Leisure Experiences Of College-Attending Emerging Adults Using Neo-Eriksonian Identity Theory, Cindy L. Hartman

All Dissertations

Two fundamental characteristics of emerging adulthood, the developmental period coinciding with 18-25 years of age, are identity development and freedom. An individual’s identity development, or identity status, is understood as the juxtaposition of identity exploration and identity commitment and can act as the basis by which to compare motivations and behaviors (e.g., well-being, healthy use of time) across emerging adults. The present research sought to understand a basic tenet of freedom, perception of leisure-free time, among American college-attending emerging adults (n=565) with distinctive identity statuses. The perception of free time may be understood as a function of identity development among …

Application Of An Andragogical Approach And Experiential Learning For Teaching Culinary Nutrition To Culinary Arts Students, Nisreen Mohamad Abdulsalam

All Dissertations

Excessive consumption of calories, protein, fat, and salt has been linked to obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and many other diseases. The nutrients provided to consumers by restaurant food, including calories, protein, fat, and salt, pose challenges for the health status of Americans and may fuel the obesity epidemic, contributing to otherwise preventable diseases. Chefs are in the unique position of creating healthier menu choices. Since many chefs may have limited knowledge of culinary nutrition, educating culinary arts students on applied nutrition is a viable strategy for improving the healthiness of restaurant menus, thereby improving the health of the population.

Essays On The Financial Crisis, Financial Regulation, And Banks, Danielle Zanzalari May 2015

Essays On The Financial Crisis, Financial Regulation, And Banks, Danielle Zanzalari

All Dissertations

The conventional wisdom was that the Capital Purchase Program (CPP), under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), would benefit large banks over small sized banks, magnifying the claim that banks were 'Too Big to Fail'. In my first chapter, I examine whether investors react differently to important news regarding the CPP, depending on the asset size of banks. Using returns to common stock shareholders, I analyze the CPP announcement, bank capital infusions, and repayments and find that large banks, regardless of whether or not they entered into the CPP program and received capital, had large and significant returns at the …
