Sibling Abuse: A Study Of School Counselors' Shared Attitudes And Beliefs, Diane Stutey
Sibling Abuse: A Study Of School Counselors' Shared Attitudes And Beliefs, Diane Stutey
Publications
The impact of sibling abuse on children and adolescents is rarely contemplated. Counselors are in a position to advocate for all children and protect them from harm; yet one source of harm that counseling practitioners and educators might be unaware of stems from violence between siblings, which can become abusive. In this article, findings are presented from a phenomenological study examining eight practicing school counselors’ attitudes and beliefs about sibling abuse and the contexts or situations that have influenced them. Seven themes emerged supporting school counselors’ perceptions of their role in responding to sibling abuse and their beliefs about factors …

Ph Sensing And Imaging With Nanoparticles And Implantable Films, Fenglin Wang
All Dissertations
pH is a very important parameter in biological systems. Monitoring pH in situ may provide useful information for studying pH regulated cellular events, diagnosing diseases and assessing treatment efficacy. Various strategies have been introduced for developing pH sensors. However, it is still challenging to monitor pH in biological systems with high specificity, especially through thick tissue. In this dissertation, we describe three types of pH sensors which are used to noninvasively monitor pH in living cells, monitor and map bacterial growth caused pH variation through thick tissue with minimal autofluorescence background. In Chapter 2, a pH nanosensor with high specificity …

Thermal Post-Fabrication Processing Of Y2o3:Tm Ceramic Scintillators, Matthew Graham Chapman
All Theses
The effects of thermal post-fabrication processing in O2 flux on the luminescence and scintillation of Y2O3:Tm transparent ceramics were investigated. The material's microstructure, optical properties, and scintillation properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermoluminescence measurements, differential pulse height distribution measurements, Archimedes density measurements, photoluminescence measurements, and ultra violet-visible transmission measurements. The processing is effective if performed in the time frame of 60-120mins at 1050°C under oxygen flow. After the first hour of processing, about 40% enhancement in the luminescence output together with about 20% enhancement in the scintillation light yield were observed. The …

Don't Turn On The Light!: Exploring Summer Camp Professionals' Perceptions And Camp Policies On Ghost Stories, Areil C. Blanton
All Theses
Varying opinions exist among camp professionals regarding whether ghost stories should be shared or prohibited in a summer camp setting. Summer camps offer a controlled and safe environment for campers to challenge limits and conquer fears (Ventrura & Garst, 2013). Ghost stories can be used as a method to hook campers into the program and build community within the camp (Higgens, 2008). However, not all campers may be emotionally equipped to handle ghost stories resulting in perceptions of the camp being an unsafe and scary environment (Ellis, 1981). The purpose of this study is to explore attitudes, philosophies and policies …

Carrie’S Choice: Contemporary Feminism And Sociopolitical Constructions Of Womanhood In Film Adaptations Of Stephen King’S Carrie, Molly Brianna Collins
Carrie’S Choice: Contemporary Feminism And Sociopolitical Constructions Of Womanhood In Film Adaptations Of Stephen King’S Carrie, Molly Brianna Collins
All Theses
When Stephen King published his debut novel Carrie in a post Roe v. Wade America in 1974, a narrative about a young girl with telekinesis captured the fear of what was to come from women with power. In response to the burgeoning women’s movement of the 1970s, King’s novel culminates as a heightened expression of the cultural damage a sexually liberated woman with choice could cause. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation of the novel follows suit, extending a fear of women with choice by employing the cinematic male gaze to reclaim the right to objectify women. By emphasizing cosmetic …

Analyzing User Acceptance Of Mobile Technology In Clinical Settings Through Point-Of-Care Mobile Applications, Leanne Elizabeth Loper
Analyzing User Acceptance Of Mobile Technology In Clinical Settings Through Point-Of-Care Mobile Applications, Leanne Elizabeth Loper
All Theses
The advent of mobile phones has led to global connectivity surpassing any global conversation previously known. However, despite having access to this global network through mobile devices and ever expanding internet access, many developing countries still lack basic medical technology. In many resource-poor medical settings, existing monitors used to process and display medical data received from various sensors (temperature, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) are either missing or unreliable. Furthermore, these devices are rarely designed with an interface appropriate for the needs of the end user. Additionally, the use of mobile apps for medical purposes is increasing …
Fabrication Of Luag:Pr Ceramics, Matthew R. Marchewka
Fabrication Of Luag:Pr Ceramics, Matthew R. Marchewka
All Theses
(Lu1-xPrx)3Al5O12 (LuAG:Pr) is seen as a promising scintillator for positron emission tomography (PET) scanners due to its high density and fast scintillation decay time. However, the high temperatures needed to grow single crystals and limitations in the incorporation of Pr into LuAG crystals make transparent ceramics of this material an attractive alternative. In this work, (Lu1-xPrx)3Al5O12 powders and ceramic bodies with different Pr concentrations, from x = 0.0001 to x = 0.05 were fabricated and characterized. The luminescence concentration quenching of LuAG:Pr powders and ceramic bodies was estimated by means of photoluminescence measurements. The powders show maximum photoluminescence intensity at …
Magnetic Nanoparticles In The Prevention Of Neointimal Hyperplasia, Elliott Mappus
Magnetic Nanoparticles In The Prevention Of Neointimal Hyperplasia, Elliott Mappus
All Theses
The use of vascular stents to treat occluded blood vessels is common practice; however, this procedure is often complicated by neointimal hyperplasia reocclusion and thrombogenesis. One treatment option is systematically administering heparin to activate antithrombin III leading to deactivation of thrombin and other proteases involved in blood clotting. This treatment is associated with high rates of bleeding and other vascular complications. In addition to the widely known anti-coagulation effects, heparin has long been known to exhibit an anti-proliferative effect on the growth of cells. The ideal solution would be localized delivery to the site of the interest. Recently, the advancements …

A Survey Of The Influences On Water Conservation Behavior In Pickens And Oconee Counties, William Blakely Jarrett, Jr.
All Theses
Most of the research on water demand management has occurred in the Western U.S, where there has been a serious and extended water crisis. This study examined the relevance of past influences on water conservation behavior in Pickens and Oconee counties, which are politically conservative and have not yet experienced a set of prolonged and sufficiently severe droughts. The survey results demonstrated that variables such as environmental beliefs, local water concern, and local place attachment could result in water conservation behavior in the Southeastern context. Based on this information, the researcher recommends that planners in the region engage their communities …

It is through our body which we experience life, rooted in physicality and sensation. Essentially residing in an object-oriented world, we are at the mercy of things constituting one another, shaping our identity. Therefore, self is a byproduct of our experiences, never fixed, but in fact, always in flux, dependent upon the body as the intermediary between self and object, grounding us in this physical world. My work allows me a venue in which I hone in on the body as a tool. Incorporating ritualized processes into my studio practice is paramount in aiding my inquiries of bodily existence, as …
A Comparative Analysis Of Electroluminescent And Retrorefelective Materials As Nighttime Pedestrian Conspicuity Aids, Drea Kevin Fekety
A Comparative Analysis Of Electroluminescent And Retrorefelective Materials As Nighttime Pedestrian Conspicuity Aids, Drea Kevin Fekety
All Theses
Recent literature suggests that retroreflective materials, when configured in a biological motion pattern, make vulnerable road users (such as pedestrians) more conspicuous to drivers at night. However, retroreflective elements in clothing can be effective only when a light source (e.g., automobile headlamps) illuminates the material in such a way as to allow the material to reflect sufficient light back to the eyes of the driver. Thus, retroreflective materials are not useful for pedestrians who are positioned outside the beam pattern of an approaching vehicle's headlamps. Electroluminescent materials, flexible light sources that can be attached to clothing, have the potential to …
Influence Of Repeated Field Applications Of Azoxystrobin On Population Diversity Of Monilinia Fructicola, Madeline Elizabeth Dowling
Influence Of Repeated Field Applications Of Azoxystrobin On Population Diversity Of Monilinia Fructicola, Madeline Elizabeth Dowling
All Theses
Reduced-risk fungicides are a major component of modern IPM programs, but their site-specific mode of action makes them vulnerable to resistance development. Assessing the resistance risk of a fungicide is critical to establishment of sustainable use protocols for the practitioner. Several controlled laboratory studies indicate that fungicide-induced mutagenesis may be an underappreciated trait in resistance risk assessment. In the brown rot fungus Monilinia fructicola, microsatellite instability and transposon movement resulted after prolonged exposure to the fungicide azoxystrobin in vitro. In this study, azoxystrobin or propiconazole fungicides were applied weekly to nectarine trees for two years between bloom and harvest, and …
