Here, I Used To Be: Mobile Media And Practices Of Place-Based Digital Memory, Jordan Frith, Jason Kalin Aug 2015

Here, I Used To Be: Mobile Media And Practices Of Place-Based Digital Memory, Jordan Frith, Jason Kalin

Publications

This article examines how location-based mobile media technologies are affecting the ways individuals experience the relationship between memory and place. We argue that location-based mobile applications that allow people to check in to places or record their routes represent new practices of place-based digital memory. Many individuals are using mobile media to mobilize place and memory together to create new forms of digital network memory from which they may begin to remember their pasts and to write their histories—a kind of rhetorical and poetic memory making. To help illuminate these practices, we analyze applications such as Foursquare and My Tracks …

Relationships Between Growth Rate And Gene Expression In Ruegeria Pomeroyi Dss-3, A Model Marine Alphaproteobacterium, Nattasha Vinas

All Theses

Microbes are important contributors to ecosystem processes such as biogeochemical cycling. Their activities vary, depending on environmental parameters such as carbon type and concentration, temperature, and salinity. Current estimates of in situ microbial growth is limited to gross estimates or rely on incubation based methods that disturb the natural state of the community. The goal of this master’s thesis is to develop molecular methods to directly assess microbial growth rates in the environment at the level of a taxonomic group. Here we grew Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3 under different temperatures (15 °C or 30 °C) and different carbon sources (yeast extract/tryptone, …

Interkingdom Communication: Study Of Caenorhabditis Elegans And Vibrio Cholerae Interactions, Joseph Angeloni Aug 2015

Interkingdom Communication: Study Of Caenorhabditis Elegans And Vibrio Cholerae Interactions, Joseph Angeloni

All Theses

Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that is mainly found in water environments, and is the causative agent of the disease cholera in humans. It is critical for this bacterium to communicate via quorum sensing to persist and survive in the environment, as well as cause infection. Recently, it has been shown that eukaryotes are able to sense and respond to certain quorum sensing molecules, known as autoinducers, which are produced by different bacteria. Caenorhabditis elegans is a particularly useful model for studying this interaction. During preliminary experiments, it was noticed that C. elegans were strongly attracted to V. …

Acoustic Scattering Response Of Hierarchic Honeycomb Structures For Cylindrical And Spherical Structures, Arun Mor Aug 2015

Acoustic Scattering Response Of Hierarchic Honeycomb Structures For Cylindrical And Spherical Structures, Arun Mor

All Theses

Sandwich panels with honeycomb core are often employed in structures for improved mechanical properties with lightweight. Honeycombs are defined by non-overlapping and periodic unit cells. Most research conducted on these sandwich panels focuses on stiffness and strength properties. The acoustic aspect of these panels has been focused on sound transmission loss. For acoustics, previous studies used effective honeycomb orthotropic elastic moduli based on Cartesian unit cell geometry to model the core as a homogeneous structure. While efficient, this modeling approach loses accuracy at higher frequencies. Furthermore, when used for curved panels, the effective moduli are only approximate. In this work, …

Washing Away Our Heritage: The Impacts Of Rising Sea Levels On National Historic Landmarks In Boston, Massachusetts And Charleston, South Carolina, Melanie Weston

All Theses

Rising sea levels not only threaten coastal infrastructure and private property, but also the world’s historic resources. This thesis examines the impacts of rising sea levels on the historic resources of Charleston, South Carolina and Boston, Massachusetts. These two cities are prominent in American history, home to a significant number of National Historic Landmarks, and are recognized as the cultural capitals of their regions. These cities will be studied closely in this work not only for their effects from rising sea levels but also for possible adaptations and mitigation policies against the predicted effects of sea level rise.

Influence Of Low Shear And Cyclic Strain On Hyperglycemic Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells: An In Vitro Dynamic Disease Model, Varun Chawla Aug 2015

Influence Of Low Shear And Cyclic Strain On Hyperglycemic Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells: An In Vitro Dynamic Disease Model, Varun Chawla

All Theses

Vascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality amongst diabetic patients which represent a major proportion of patients undergoing coronary artery revascularization. Major advances in drug eluting stent technologies have reduced the overall rates of restenosis in general however diabetic patients still remain at a high risk thus requiring target lesion revascularization more commonly as compared to non-diabetic cohort. Phenotypic modulation demonstrated by smooth muscle cells is essential for normal wound healing response however is also contributive to initiation and development of various vascular complications including neointimal hyperplasia which ultimately leads to the lumen re-narrowing or restenosis. Hyperglycemia …

Analysis And An Application Of Rf Interferometer, Yongzhi Shao Aug 2015

Analysis And An Application Of Rf Interferometer, Yongzhi Shao

All Theses

The thesis investigates additive RF interferometer sensing technique, which is highly sensitive compared to other RF sensing methods. First, mathematical descriptions are given to illustrate how the RF interferometer works. Then an analysis of single particle passing over a coplanar waveguide in carrier liquid is presented, which poses as a difficulty to simulation software. The analysis is combined with interferometer mathematical equations and validated by a particle measurement in an interferometer. The interferometer sensitivity is enhanced by incorporating filters as sensing devices and functionally expanded by using the reflection coefficients. In the end, an application of gas measurement with the …

Understanding Molecular Interactions Between Proteins And Carbon Nanomaterials, Siva Dasetty Aug 2015

Understanding Molecular Interactions Between Proteins And Carbon Nanomaterials, Siva Dasetty

All Theses

Over the past few years there has been a rise in the number of nanomaterials engineered for a wide array of applications because of their unique properties. This rise in the development of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and its growing usage has also raised questions about its potential impact on the biological environment. Recent experimental studies suggest that these ENMs could be toxic due to the formation of a protein corona. Therefore, understanding the formation of a protein corona would provide some insights into the toxic behavior of ENMs. This requires understanding the interactions between proteins and ENMs. We employ molecular …

Microcosm Evaluation Of Enhanced Bioremediation For Halogenated Methanes At A Former Industrial Site, Hao Wang Aug 2015

Microcosm Evaluation Of Enhanced Bioremediation For Halogenated Methanes At A Former Industrial Site, Hao Wang

All Theses

Halogenated methanes are among the most frequently encountered contaminants at hazardous waste sites. One such site in California is contaminated with chloroform (CF), carbon tetrachloride (CT), and trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11). CF, CT and CFC-11 are the main focus of this research; they are present at the California site at concentrations in the mg per liter range and a plume of contaminated groundwater emanating from a source zone is approaching a property boundary, necessitating remediation. Anaerobic bioremediation is one of the technologies under consideration for addressing the source zone and the less concentrated downgradient plume. A microcosm study was performed to evaluate …

Prisoners In War: Zoos And Zoo Animals During Human Conflict 1870-1947, Clelly Johnson Aug 2015

Prisoners In War: Zoos And Zoo Animals During Human Conflict 1870-1947, Clelly Johnson

All Theses

Animals are sentient beings capable of many of the same feelings experienced by humans. They mourn a loss, they feel love and loyalty, and they experience fear. During wars and conflicts, fear is a prevailing emotion among humans, who worry for their well-being. Animals, too, feel fear during human conflicts, and that fear is magnified when those animals are caged. History has shown the victimization of zoo animals during military conflicts. Zoo animals already lack agency over their own lives, and in times of war, they are seen as a liability. From the Siege of Paris to recent Israel-Hamas conflicts …

Bioprinting As A Tool To Evaluate Interactions Of Cancerous And Noncancerous Cells, Holly Jordan Aug 2015

Bioprinting As A Tool To Evaluate Interactions Of Cancerous And Noncancerous Cells, Holly Jordan

All Theses

Cancer is becoming one the leading causes of death worldwide, and in particular, breast cancer, which is the second highest cause of cancer death for women. Approximately 12 percent of US women will develop invasive breast cancer, and about 40,000 of US women will die from breast cancer in 2015. With better detection and treatment options, breast cancer death has been decreasing over the past two decades. Despite declining rates in breast cancer death, cancer progression is not well understood. There are many studies focused on cancer, but in situ cancer studies are often hard to reproduce and can even …

Eclipsing Competition: Presidential Policy And Nasa 1955-1979, Ryan Conway Aug 2015

Eclipsing Competition: Presidential Policy And Nasa 1955-1979, Ryan Conway

All Theses

The aim of this thesis is to analyze presidential decisions in formulating NASA programs in the first twenty years of the space administration. NASA programs varied greatly: from a “hands-off” approach taken by Eisenhower to a reactive role taken by the Kennedy and Johnson presidencies, as different presidents viewed Cold War competition in different lights. It also analyzes how competition and cooperation shaped NASA policy making. The thesis shows that NASA programs were extensions of the sitting president’s foreign policy goals. Despite presidential rhetoric of cooperation with the Soviet Union, the programs of NASA from 1958-1969 relied upon competition to …

Integrated Batching And Lot Streaming With Variable Sublots And Sequence-Dependent Setups In A Two-Stage Hybrid Flow Shop, Shasha Wang

All Theses

Consider a paint manufacturing firm whose customers typically place orders for two or more products simultaneously: liquid primer, top coat paint, and/or undercoat paint. Each product belongs to an associated product family that can be batched together during the manufacturing process. Meanwhile, each product can be split into several sublots so that overlapping production is possible in a two-stage hybrid flow shop. Various numbers of identical capacitated machines operate in parallel at each stage. We present a mixed-integer programming (MIP) to analyze this novel integrated batching and lot streaming problem with variable sublots, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependent setup times. …

Disaster Management Cycle-Based Integrated Humanitarian Supply Network Management, Kasin Ransikarbum

All Dissertations

While logistics research recently has placed increased focus on disruptionmanagement, few studies have examined the response and recovery phases in post-disaster operations. We present a multiple-objective, integrated network optimizationmodel for making strategic decisions in the supply distribution and network restorationphases of humanitarian logistics operations. Our model provides an equity- or fairness-based solution for constrained capacity, budget, and resource problems in post-disasterlogistics management. We then generate efficient Pareto frontiers to understand the trade-off between the objectives of interest.Next, we present a goal programming-based multiple-objective integratedresponse and recovery model. The model prescribes fairness-based compromise solutionsfor user-desired goals, given limited capacity, budget, and …

Investigating Into The Dynamics Of Mammalian Cell Growth: Using In Vitro To Help Improve Therapies, Arthur Nathan Brodsky Aug 2015

Investigating Into The Dynamics Of Mammalian Cell Growth: Using In Vitro To Help Improve Therapies, Arthur Nathan Brodsky

All Dissertations

In the past several decades, advances in our understanding of cells that comprise our bodies have been remarkable. This is due in large part to the development of mammalian cell culture practices that allow researchers to mimic conditions in the body. Cell culture techniques have allowed researchers to study the behavior of cells under various circumstances that would be impossible to study in humans. While there are some drawbacks to the reductionism inherent in studying cells in a dish, many medical treatments have resulted from cell culture experiments. Additionally, many new therapeutics are only possible due to these improved cell …
