Structural Study Of Multifunctional Block Co-Polymers In Solutions And Thin Films, Anuradhi Nimesha Kumari Wickramasinghe May 2017

Structural Study Of Multifunctional Block Co-Polymers In Solutions And Thin Films, Anuradhi Nimesha Kumari Wickramasinghe

All Theses

This work focuses on the association of a structured multifunctional co-polymer in solutions and thin films as studied using neutron techniques and atomic force microscopy. Tethering multiple blocks into structured architectures is a promising way to tailor block copolymers with well-defined properties. Polymer films are often cast from solutions. Therefore, understanding the association of complex polymers in solutions and the impact of the aggregates into thin films is crucial to design materials with well-defined properties. Ionically-decorated blocks facilitate transport of ions and response to electrical fields. However they also affect the polymer structure. This work is divided into two sections. …

First Day Hikes, which occur on New Year's Day, are part of a nationwide initiative led by America's State Parks designed to get more people outdoors enjoying the physical, social, and environmental health benefits associated with nature-based recreation. In 2016, over 56,000 people across the US attended one of the nearly 1,200 First Day Hikes offered. Despite the popularity of the First Day Hike initiative, relatively little is known about the First Day Hikers themselves, their reasons for participating, or the broader impacts of this experience, as the program had never been formally evaluated. To address these gaps, our study …

Effects Of Phosphorus Concentration On Algal Composition And Bioprocessing Potential, Cassidy Laird May 2017

Effects Of Phosphorus Concentration On Algal Composition And Bioprocessing Potential, Cassidy Laird

All Theses

As an increasing amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases pollute the lower atmosphere, and as various chemicals and elements pollute the water and soil, many search for potential solutions. One possibility is bio-mitigation using algae. Algae use CO2 and common polluting nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to grow. The growth, in turn, produces biomass and other byproducts that are converted to commodities such as biofuels, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food supplements. Cosmetics and gelatin products are commonly sold, while other chemical products have bottlenecks in the process that require further research to make it marketable. The potential bioproducts …

Integrating Tiny Houses Into The American Urban Fabric: A Comparative Case Study Of Land Use Policy Change In The Carolinas, Krista Evans May 2017

Integrating Tiny Houses Into The American Urban Fabric: A Comparative Case Study Of Land Use Policy Change In The Carolinas, Krista Evans

All Dissertations

The concept of the American dream, manifested in the ownership of a detached single family home, remains a driving force in the housing market. Historically, small homes have held a prominent niche in this dream in both urban and rural areas. However, the expansion of restrictive urban land use policies to protect property values, paired with the rapid diminishment of the American middle class, has made homeownership increasingly difficult to achieve. The tiny house movement has emerged as a means to promote small, affordable, and sustainable home ownership. However, the construction of tiny homes, or even the traditional cottage, is …

Publications

Aggregation of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), a peptide hormone co-synthesized and co-stored with insulin in pancreatic cells and also co-secreted to the circulation, is associated with beta-cell death in type-2 diabetes (T2D). In T2D patients IAPP is found aggregating in the extracellular space of the islets of Langerhans. Although the physiological environments of these intra- and extra-cellular compartments and vascular systems significantly differ, the presence of proteins is ubiquitous but the effects of protein binding on IAPP aggregation are largely unknown. Here we examined the binding of freshly-dissolved IAPP as well as pre-formed fibrils with two homologous proteins, namely cationic …

Post-Diagnosis: A Networked Framework For Narrative Reassemblage, Kristen Gay May 2017

Post-Diagnosis: A Networked Framework For Narrative Reassemblage, Kristen Gay

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between diagnostic communication practices and deliberative rhetoric through the lens of Actor-Network theory and feminist theory. Specifically, I argue that Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory (ANT) provides a generative framework for tracing diagnostic networks as it accounts for uncertainty, dispersed agency, community stakeholders, and nonhumans. The chapters explore how a networked approach to diagnosis opens up opportunities to reform doctor-patient relationships, expands our conceptions of diagnostic actants, suggests ways to respond to patients living at risk for disease, and broadens our understanding of ethos in healthcare contexts. Furthermore, I also consider how a networked framework can …

Purification, Fractionation, And Characterization Of Lignin From Kraft Black Liquor For Use As A Renewable Biomaterial, Adam Scott Klett

All Dissertations

Lignin is unique among biopolymers as it is the only abundant renewable source of aromaticity, giving it potential both as a replacement for traditionally petroleum-derived products, and as a biopolymer in its own right. Unfortunately, most commercial-grade lignins available today have a relatively high metals content and broad molecular weight distribution making them unsuitable for many applications. Thus, cost-eective separation processes must be developed if lignin is to achieve its potential as a renewable biopolymer. In this work, a technique called Aqueous Lignin Purication with Hot Acids (ALPHA) was developed to purify lignin to metal impurity levels of less than …

The New Lighthouse Keepers: A Comparative Analysis Of Ownership Structures Under The National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act Program, Jennifer Leeds

All Theses

With the automation of lights and rapid advances in navigational technology in the twentieth century, lighthouses became obsolete and fell into deterioration. With a large push by a lighthouse preservation movement in the 1990s, Congress passed the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 (NHLPA), an amendment to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). This legislation allowed the U.S. Coast Guard, which holds jurisdiction over lighthouse administration, to declare their lighthouses excess and transfer or sell them through a process administered by the National Park Service and General Services Administration. Through an application process, federal agencies, local and state governments, …
