Evaluating The Impact Of The Physical Fidelity Of The Learning Environment On Skill Acquisition, Retention, And Application, Myrtede Alfred
Evaluating The Impact Of The Physical Fidelity Of The Learning Environment On Skill Acquisition, Retention, And Application, Myrtede Alfred
All Dissertations
Simulations are believed to support learning outcomes by increasing student engagement and providing a more immersive and interactive learning environment. Research into the effectiveness of simulations as learning tools has found tangible benefits, including increased learner engagement and conceptual gains Simulations also offer the benefits of a safer and more accessible learning environment, where students can practice until the point of proficiency. While simulations have been used extensively in workforce education, there is a limited research that compares learning outcomes – affective, skill-based, and cognitive – when learning in the physical environment is substituted with learning in a simulated environment, …
Carbon And Boron Nitride Nanocomposites For Electrically And/Or Thermally Conductive Materials, Ankoma Dihon Anderson Sr.
Carbon And Boron Nitride Nanocomposites For Electrically And/Or Thermally Conductive Materials, Ankoma Dihon Anderson Sr.
All Dissertations
Herein, we report research centered on the use of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for their electrical conductivity (EC) , or more specifically the harvesting of metallic-SWNTs for their extremely high EC, and on the exploitation of carbon and boron nitride nano-fillers for polymeric composites of high thermal conductivity (TC). SWNTs as produced are a mixture of both metallic and semiconducting components , which are distinctively different in electrical conductivity and many other aspects. Thus post-production separation of -SWNTs from their mixtures in the as-produced samples is necessary. As a result, my dissertation is formatted as such: the first chapter …
Suicidal Behaviors Among College Students: Are Transfer Students At Greater Risk?, Laura S. Bogardus
Suicidal Behaviors Among College Students: Are Transfer Students At Greater Risk?, Laura S. Bogardus
All Dissertations
Suicide is a major health concern on U.S. college campuses. Research on risk and protective factors related to suicidal behaviors among college students has revealed that certain student populations such as veterans, international students, and LGBTQ students may be at greater risk for suicide. However, no known research on undergraduate transfer student status in relation to suicide ideation and attempts exists. Using the Triadic Theory of Influence (TTI) (Flay & Petraitis, 1994) as a framework, this study seeks to shed light on the relationship between transfer student status and suicide ideation and attempts, as well as the hypothesized mediating effects …

Hip-Hop Studies, while pushing boundaries in some respects, particularly the intersections of many different disciplines, reproduces certain forms of – and assumptions about – knowledge production. Additionally, some conventions in the discipline and certain types of scholarly performances of Hip-Hop scholarship render blackness pathological – even in the service of combating what is understood to be antiblackness, by virtue of attempts to combat the notion that Hip-Hop culture is, in fact, deviant or bad or unworthy of study – and are complicit in the denial of what P. Khalil Saucier and Tyron Woods describe as “black sentient humanity and the …
Thermal Inactivation Of Desiccation-Adapted Salmonella Enterica In Physically Heat-Treated Poultry Litter Used As Biological Soil Amendments, Zhao Chen
All Dissertations
Poultry litter is usually recycled into the soil to improve the structure and fertility of agricultural land. As an important source of nutrients for crop production, poultry litter may possibly contain a variety of human pathogens that can threaten humans who consume the contaminated produce. The composting process can inactivate pathogens while creating a biological soil amendment beneficial for application to arable agricultural land. Some pathogens may have the potential to survive for long periods of time in raw poultry litter or its inadequately composted products after land application, and a small population of pathogenic cells may even regrow to …

This project studies the fragments of the everyday lives of Filipino Americans, captured and interpreted via vernacular video. Read through three modes of estrangement (translation, nostalgia, and transition), Filipinoness is rendered as unheimlich or “homeless†to open multiple interpretations of this cultural identification. Filipino racial and cultural formation in the United States is often concealed by categories that tend to homogenize Asian American experience and disregard the specificity of the colonial relationship between America and the Philippines, flouting Filipino and Filipino Americans' struggles against a simultaneous ambiguity, invisibility, and strangeness as hybrid persons of color. Through an interpretive reading of …
Uranium-Selective Adsorbent Materials For Environmental Radiation Sensing, Christine Elizabeth Duval
Uranium-Selective Adsorbent Materials For Environmental Radiation Sensing, Christine Elizabeth Duval
All Dissertations
Nuclear nonproliferation efforts and treaty verification require portable, robust radiation detectors capable of detecting trace-levels of radionuclides in environmental matrices. Despite widespread interest, currently, there are no fieldable, radiation detection techniques capable of directly analyzing gross activity or isotopic distributions of uranium in environmental waters. Extractive scintillating resins in flow-cell detectors and alpha spectroscopy are two promising fieldable detection methods; however, the implementation of these detection methods in the field requires novel separation materials capable of isolating uranium from environmental waters. Organophosphorus-derivitized materials are a promising class of materials to fit this need and are reviewed in Chapter 1. Chapter …
Integrating Tiny Houses Into The American Urban Fabric: A Comparative Case Study Of Land Use Policy Change In The Carolinas, Krista Evans
Integrating Tiny Houses Into The American Urban Fabric: A Comparative Case Study Of Land Use Policy Change In The Carolinas, Krista Evans
All Dissertations
The concept of the American dream, manifested in the ownership of a detached single family home, remains a driving force in the housing market. Historically, small homes have held a prominent niche in this dream in both urban and rural areas. However, the expansion of restrictive urban land use policies to protect property values, paired with the rapid diminishment of the American middle class, has made homeownership increasingly difficult to achieve. The tiny house movement has emerged as a means to promote small, affordable, and sustainable home ownership. However, the construction of tiny homes, or even the traditional cottage, is …
Target-Specific Capture Of Relevant Gaseous Compounds Using Natural And Synthetic Nano And Micro Materials, Fernanda Delbuque Guerra
Target-Specific Capture Of Relevant Gaseous Compounds Using Natural And Synthetic Nano And Micro Materials, Fernanda Delbuque Guerra
All Dissertations
By definition, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic compounds that easily become vapor or gases. Many VOCs are hazardous air pollutants and often known for their low, often unpleasant, threshold odor, which can be below parts per billion in some cases. Nanotechnology-based materials for the remediation of gaseous pollutants has been the focus of many researchers due to their unique chemical and physical properties and enhanced reactivity when compared to bulkier materials. Among the many challenges preventing the global use of nanomaterials are the high costs of fabrication, on-site recovery, limited scale-up, potential toxicity since many of them rely on …
Acetate Transport Is Essential For Survival And Virulence Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Grace Naanyu Kisirkoi
Acetate Transport Is Essential For Survival And Virulence Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Grace Naanyu Kisirkoi
All Dissertations
Cryptococcus neoformans is a basidiomycetous fungal pathogen that claims 625,000 lives annually worldwide. Particularly among the immunocompromised, it is the leading cause of fungal meningitis following pulmonary colonization and dissemination to the central nervous system via the blood-brain barrier. The success of C. neoformans as a pathogen is largely attributable to metabolic scavenging during starvation conditions within the host's environment. Lung alveolar macrophages, which are among the first immune effectors to combat an initial pulmonary infection, present a glucose- and amino acid-poor environment that likely necessitates metabolism of nonpreferred carbon sources such as lactate and acetate for establishment of a …
Development Of A Tissue Engineered Mitral Valve, Christopher Patrick Deborde
Development Of A Tissue Engineered Mitral Valve, Christopher Patrick Deborde
All Dissertations
Heart valve diseases affect nearly 8 million people every year in the United States. Of these patients, 72% are affected by mitral valve diseases. Stenosis, regurgitation, and prolapse of the mitral valve are the primary pathologies affecting valve function resulting in atrial fibrillation, arterial thromboembolism, pulmonary edema, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Surgical options to repair or replace the mitral valve are only palliative, especially for children with congenital defects, and do not exclude the need for reoperation. A tissue-engineered option is feasible and holds great potential through the combination of decellularized scaffolds, patient stem cells, and heart …

Comparing Ssurgo Data Versus Geospatial Field Measurements To Estimate Soil Texture And Infiltration Rate Classes In Glaciated Soils, Stephen Austin Cole
All Theses
The infiltration rate (IR) of water is a key soil property related to hydrological processes, soil health and ecosystem services. However, detailed measurements of IR in the field and/or laboratory are labor-intensive and expensive to perform. Soil judging in the field provides a rapid and inexpensive method to estimate IR classes based on soil texture, soil organic carbon/matter and soil structure. The objectives of this study were to classify and compare soil texture and IR for the A horizon across the 147-ha Cornell University Willsboro Research Farm using the Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) database and field-based measurements. Soil texture was …
Abducted By Reading Machines: Pragmatism And The Discourse Of Distant Reading, Matthew Scott Duncan
Abducted By Reading Machines: Pragmatism And The Discourse Of Distant Reading, Matthew Scott Duncan
All Theses
This project begins with an investigation of a case study in literary analysis that attempts to bring together close and distant reading techniques to enhance the output of both methods. The investigation reveals not only a breakdown in the attempted corroboration of truth claims and evidence across methods, but a tension felt more broadly in the discourse surrounding distant reading as a methodological and disciplinary position. In response to this problematic, I access C.S. Peirce and John Dewey to construct an argument for a pragmatic model for mediating between the more traditional methods employed in literary studies and the computational …

"They've Come To Draw Blood" - How Women Fans Of World Wrestling Entertainment Perceive Women Wrestlers, Melissa Jacobs
All Theses
For a long time, professional wrestling has existed on the outskirts of society, with the idea that it was just for college-aged men. With the rise of the popularity of the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion, professional wrestling entered the mainstream. Celebrities often appear at wrestling shows, and the WWE often hires mainstream musical artists to perform at their biggest shows, WrestleMania and Summer Slam. Despite this still-growing popularity, there still exists a gap between men's wrestling and women's wrestling. Often the women aren't allowed long match times, and for the longest time sometimes weren't even on the main shows. Many …

Effective Celebrity Endorsers: What Are The Rhetorical Factors?, Christa Kettlewell
Effective Celebrity Endorsers: What Are The Rhetorical Factors?, Christa Kettlewell
All Theses
Celebrity endorsements are a common technique used in advertising. While many have studied this marketing tool and its effectiveness, a gap remains in the research regarding overall effectiveness in celebrity choice and advertisement composition in terms of rhetoric. Oftentimes, there is an assumption that celebrity endorsers hold the most power in creating purchase intentions, yet concepts related to rhetoric suggest that other elements play an active role in this as well. Consequently, this study adds to the conversation of celebrity endorsements by examining five beauty advertisements that utilize celebrity endorsements to better understand their overall visual rhetoric and, thus, how …
On-Line Estimation Of Oxygen Transfer Rate With Oxygen Enriched Air Using Off-Gas Sensor For Escherichia Coli, Mohammad Mayyan
On-Line Estimation Of Oxygen Transfer Rate With Oxygen Enriched Air Using Off-Gas Sensor For Escherichia Coli, Mohammad Mayyan
All Theses
An online estimator for the Oxygen Transfer Rate OTR for Escherichia coli cultured in bioreactors was developed, which allowed for improved culture outcomes. E. coli are used to manufacture recombinant proteins used as therapeutics, such as insulin and human growth hormone. E. coli cultures require high levels of oxygen in order to produce the therapeutics efficiently. Previous methods to estimate OTR used values for the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, which had been determined from separate experiments and thus set to a constant value or by stopping oxygen flow periodically to the bioreactor to update the kLa value. In this …

Computational Modeling Of Organic Fluor Molecules, Nathaniel Jacob Nichols
Computational Modeling Of Organic Fluor Molecules, Nathaniel Jacob Nichols
All Theses
The goal of this research is to benchmark the computational parameters necessary to accurately model the fluorescence process of seven organic scintillating molecules, including 2-(1-naphthyl)-5-phenyloxazole (αNPO), 2-(1-naphthyl)-4-vinyl-5- phenyloxazole (vNPO), 5-(4-Bromophenyl)-3-(4-ethylphenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (PZ1), 3-(4-Ethylphenyl)- 5-(4-vinylphenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (vPZ1), 3-(4-Ethylphenyl)-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H- pyrazole (PZ2), 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-5-(4-biphenylyl)-1,3,4 oxadiazole (PBD), and 2-[4-(4'- vinylbiphenylyl)]-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole monomer (vPBD). Organic fluorophores are utilized for scintillation detection, as the fluorophores emit detectable photons in response to energy deposition from ionizing radiation into the scintillator. Optimal detection efficiency occurs with emitted photons at the maximum response wavelength of the photodetector, which, for a conventional photomultiplier tube, is 420 nm. Identifying an optimal organic fluorophore structure through …

"I Am That Family Member That No One Talks About!" Latino And Lgbtq Students' Perspectives On Institutional Discourse Of Inclusion, Manuel Antonio Rodriguez Jr.
All Theses
There has been a vast amount of research that has focused on inclusion, diversity, and multiculturalism within institutional settings (Cuyjet, Howard-Hamilton, & Cooper, 2012). Researchers such as Schedler, Glastra, and Kats (1998) have focused on the positive benefits of having a diverse population of people in a particular setting. How to best integrate these groups in a multicultural setting has been the focus of many researchers (Milem, Clayton-Pederson, Hurtado, & Allen, 1998). Despite the prior research dedicated toward inclusion, there are certain areas that remain neglected due to the complexities of multicultural identities, as well as institutional reluctance to address …

The Bee's Knees Or Spines Of A Spider: What Makes An 'Insect' Interesting?, Nathan James Shipley
The Bee's Knees Or Spines Of A Spider: What Makes An 'Insect' Interesting?, Nathan James Shipley
All Theses
Insects and their kin (bugs) are among the most detested and despised creatures on earth. Irrational fears of these mostly harmless organisms often restrict and prevent opportunities for outdoor recreation and leisure. Alternatively, Shipley and Bixler (2016) theorize that direct and positive experiences with bugs during middle childhood may result in fascination with insects leading to comfort in wildland settings. The objective of this research was to examine and identify the novel and unfamiliar bug types that people are more likely to find interesting and visually attend to when spontaneously presented with their images. This research examined these questions through …

Phytophthora Species Associated With American, Chinese, And Backcross Hybrid Chestnut Seedlings In Field Sites In The Southeastern United States, Suzette Ruth Sharpe
All Theses
Phytophthora root rot was first described on American chestnut (Castanea dentata) in a preliminary report in 1932 and the causal agent was tentatively and erroneously identified as P. cambivora. Soon after, the causal agent was correctly identified as P. cinnamomi and, since that time, P. cinnamomi has been the only species reported to cause Phytophthora root rot on the American chestnut. In the early 1980s, The American Chestnut Foundation initiated a backcross breeding program to develop chestnut trees that had resistance to Cryphonectria parasitica which causes chestnut blight. In the early 2000s, backcross hybrid chestnut seedlings ([American …
Exploring The Masculine Domain Of Professional Football: Perceptions Of Credibility Of Female Coaches In The Nfl, Morgan Elizabeth Tadlock
Exploring The Masculine Domain Of Professional Football: Perceptions Of Credibility Of Female Coaches In The Nfl, Morgan Elizabeth Tadlock
All Theses
Previous research shows that females are underrepresented in the masculine domain of sport. More specifically, the hyper-masculine domain of professional football has presented women with much resistance when trying to enter the industry. Hegemonic masculinity has some responsibility for maintaining this resistance. The current study uses the lens of hegemonic masculinity to explore the space of professional football and its progression toward equality for females. Despite the first full-time female coach being hired by the Buffalo Bills in 2016, very little research exists on the topic. This study aims to add to the existing conversation on hegemonic masculinity and females …
