Multifuntional Nanotherapeutics For The Combinatorial Drug And Gene Therapy In The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Breanne Hourigan Aug 2017

Multifuntional Nanotherapeutics For The Combinatorial Drug And Gene Therapy In The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Breanne Hourigan

All Theses

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a grade IV glioma, is the most common primary brain tumor, affecting about 3 out of 100,000 persons per year in the United States. GBM accounts for about 80% of primary malignant brain tumors, and is also the most aggressive of malignant brain tumors. With exhaustive treatment, survival only averages between 12 and 15 months, with a 2-year survival rate less than 25%. New therapeutic strategies are necessary to improve the outcomes of this disease. Chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent, is used as a first-line of treatment for GBM. However, GBM tumors develop resistance …

Kingdom Rush Tribute: Porting A 2d Tower Defense Game To A 3d World Using Unreal Engine 4, Christian Stith

All Theses

Video game remakes are a popular modern phenomenon in which an existing game is remade to target a different platform, a higher resolution, or simply a different audience. Seldom, however, are video games remade into a different genre altogether. In this paper, we describe the process of remaking Kingdom Rush, a popular top-down 2D tower defense game, into a 3D third-person shooter in Unreal Engine 4. In addition to recreating all visual components of the game in 3D, this process revealed several challenges that arose related to transferring the gameplay from a 2D screen to a 3D world. We describe …

Controlling Recombinant Escherichia Coli Cultures To The Boundary Of Oxidative And Overflow Metabolism (Boom) For Robust Efficient Growth, Shahin Gharakozlou Lashkari Aug 2017

Controlling Recombinant Escherichia Coli Cultures To The Boundary Of Oxidative And Overflow Metabolism (Boom) For Robust Efficient Growth, Shahin Gharakozlou Lashkari

All Theses

In the last three decades, biopharmaceuticals such as human growth hormone have been used to treat many diseases from HIV/AIDS to different types of cancer. Controlling the growth of recombinant cells, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), is essential for productivity and efficiency of biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The cell growth can be controlled by regulating feed rate as the limiting factor. Hence, a robust and efficient feed controller – that only uses common industrial sensors – is desired. In this thesis, a controller is presented which can set the appropriate feed rate based on the metabolic state of E. coli. A …

A Cross-Layer Design For Reducing Packet Loss Caused By Fading In A Mobile Ad Hoc Network, William Derek Johnson Aug 2017

A Cross-Layer Design For Reducing Packet Loss Caused By Fading In A Mobile Ad Hoc Network, William Derek Johnson

All Theses

We investigate methods for reducing packet loss in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) caused by the presence of fading. The modeled system employs an adaptive transmission protocol. This protocol works well when link performance is consistent and predictable, but system performance deteriorates when link quality begins to vary. A log-normal block fad-ing model is implemented to test system performance with time-varying link performance. We propose two different methods for addressing the effects of fading. First we propose the transmission success probability (TSP) link-rate control protocol, which uses link per-formance measures to modify the existing adaptive transmission protocol and reduce the …

Automated Arduino Based Temperature Control And Resistance Change Reading System For Gas Sensors, Hohite Fetene Aug 2017

Automated Arduino Based Temperature Control And Resistance Change Reading System For Gas Sensors, Hohite Fetene

All Theses

Semiconductor gas sensors detect gases by a chemical reaction that takes place when the gas is in contact with the sensor and sensitivity is affected by operating temperature and humidity. The accurate control of gas sensor’s operating temperature is a fundamental aspect that determines the sensitivity and selectivity of gas sensors. A variety of gas sensors are developed so far, and each has different working temperature requirement ranging from 200°C - 400°C for functioning at the finest. This research mainly focuses on the package design criteria of semiconductor gas sensor substrate being developed by Arizona State University. To maximize the …

Nuanced Views Of Pedagogical Evaluation, Kevin M. Storer Aug 2017

Nuanced Views Of Pedagogical Evaluation, Kevin M. Storer

All Theses

Novel technologies and teaching methods are being integrated into post-secondary classrooms at unprecedented rates. Educators must be certain implemented changes provide equitable alternatives to traditional pedagogical practices, before migrating to modern paradigms. However, changes in classroom practices each introduce unique psychological influences into the classroom, which may influence traditional metrics of pedagogical success. Evaluation methods for assessing classroom changes should evolve with pedagogy, to accurately measure its effects. In this paper, we share our experience exploring the equity of replacing traditional paper-and-pencil testing with digital examinations, to demonstrate the complexity of modern educational assessment. We observed a variety of variables, …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Electrospun Anti-Proliferative Sutures For Vascular Applications, Erica Beal Aug 2017

Fabrication And Characterization Of Electrospun Anti-Proliferative Sutures For Vascular Applications, Erica Beal

All Theses

There are multiple surgical procedures that require vascular or microvascular anastomosis; some of which include free tissue transfer for soft tissue reconstruction, vascular grafts and bypass surgeries. The two most common complications with a procedure involving vascular anastomosis are thrombosis and stenosis. The current method to prevent anastomotic thrombosis is the use of an anti-coagulant such as heparin. Heparin has also shown to reduce vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation which is an initiating factor for intimal hyperplasia and ultimately, stenosis. Another well-known treatment for stenosis prevention in vascular injuries is the anti-proliferative drug, paclitaxel. Previously in our 4D lab, we …

Real-Time Traffic State Estimation With Connected Vehicles, Sakib Mahmud Khan, Kaken Dey, Mashrur Chowdhury Jul 2017

Real-Time Traffic State Estimation With Connected Vehicles, Sakib Mahmud Khan, Kaken Dey, Mashrur Chowdhury

Publications

A novel framework is developed in this paper, to increase the real-time roadway traffic condition assessment accuracy, which integrates connected vehicle technology (CVT) with artificial intelligence (AI) paradigm forming a CVT-AI method. Traffic density is a major indicator of traffic conditions. In this paper, the traffic operational condition is assessed based on traffic density. A simulated network of Interstate 26 in South Carolina is developed to investigate the effectiveness of the method. The assumption is that the vehicle onboard units will forward the CV generated data to the edge devices (e.g., roadside units) for further processing. CV generated distance headway …

Is It Engineering Or Not?, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lindsay B. Wheeler

Publications

With the widespread adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States 2013), science teachers now aspire to integrate engineering into science instruction, as the standards suggest, yet many don’t know how. The first steps are to define engineering and identify tasks that incorporate engineering, which can be difficult and confusing. This article presents a simple explanation of engineering and offers a framework to help teachers determine whether a task is based on engineering. We also offer examples of how to integrate engineering in Earth science, chemistry, biology, and physics.

(Meta-)Framing Strategic Entrepreneurship, Zeki Simsek, Ciaran Heavey, Brian Curtis Fox Jun 2017

(Meta-)Framing Strategic Entrepreneurship, Zeki Simsek, Ciaran Heavey, Brian Curtis Fox

Publications

In this essay, we seek to focus scholarly discourse on the conceptual identity, boundaries, and precision of strategic entrepreneurship as an organizational construct. To give a “face” to a construct, lines must be drawn, marking off what it encompasses and what it does not. We, thus, first frame and assess prior conceptualizations from a construct clarity perspective. Our intent here is not to exhaustively catalogue all the varied conceptualizations available, but rather to map in lieu of burrow the content domain of strategic entrepreneurship as a theoretical construct, illuminate points of convergence and divergence, and reveal potential blind spots and …

Data‐Enabled Cognitive Modeling: Validating Student Engineers’ Fuzzy Design‐Based Decision‐Making In A Virtual Design Problem, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens, Naomi C. Chesler, Jeffrey Linderoth, David Williamson Shaffer Jun 2017

Data‐Enabled Cognitive Modeling: Validating Student Engineers’ Fuzzy Design‐Based Decision‐Making In A Virtual Design Problem, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens, Naomi C. Chesler, Jeffrey Linderoth, David Williamson Shaffer

Publications

The ability of future engineering professionals to solve complex real‐world problems depends on their design education and training. Because engineers engage with open‐ended problems in which there are unknown parameters and multiple competing objectives, they engage in fuzzy decision‐making, a method of making decisions that takes into account inherent imprecisions and uncertainties in the real world. In the design‐based decision‐making field, few studies have applied fuzzy decision‐making models to actual decision‐making process data. Thus, in this study, we use datasets on student decision‐making processes to validate approximate fuzzy models of student decision‐making, which we call data‐enabled cognitive modeling. The results …

Enhancing Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste Through Biochemical Methane Potential 1 Assays At Different Substrate: Inoculum Ratios, Shakira R. Hobbs, Amy E. Landis, Bruce E. Rittmann, Michelle N. Young, Prathap Parameswaran Jun 2017

Enhancing Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste Through Biochemical Methane Potential 1 Assays At Different Substrate: Inoculum Ratios, Shakira R. Hobbs, Amy E. Landis, Bruce E. Rittmann, Michelle N. Young, Prathap Parameswaran

Publications

Food waste has a high energy potential that can be converted into useful energy in the form of methane via anaerobic digestion. Biochemical Methane Potential assays (BMPs) were conducted to quantify the impacts on methane production of different ratios of food waste. Anaerobic digester sludge (ADS) was used as the inoculum, and BMPs were performed at food waste:inoculum ratios of 0.42, 1.42, and 3.0 g chemical oxygen demand/g volatile solids (VS). The 1.42 ratio had the highest CH4-COD recovery: 90% of the initial total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) was from food waste, followed by ratios 0.42 and 3.0 at 69% …

Numerical solution of the one-dimensional Richards' equation is the recommended method for coupling groundwater to the atmosphere through the vadose zone in hyperresolution Earth system models, but requires fine spatial discretization, is computationally expensive, and may not converge due to mathematical degeneracy or when sharp wetting fronts occur. We transformed the one-dimensional Richards' equation into a new equation that describes the velocity of moisture content values in an unsaturated soil under the actions of capillarity and gravity. We call this new equation the Soil Moisture Velocity Equation (SMVE). The SMVE consists of two terms: an advection-like term that accounts for …

Introducing tumor-derived cells into normal mammary stem cell niches at a sufficiently high ratio of normal to tumorous cells causes those tumor cells to undergo a change to normal mammary phenotype and yield normal mammary progeny. This phenomenon has been termed cancer cell redirection. We have developed an in vitro model that mimics in vivo redirection of cancer cells by the normal mammary microenvironment. Using the RNA profiling data from this cellular model, we examined high-level characteristics of the normal, redirected, and tumor transcriptomes and found the global expression profiles clearly distinguish the three expression states. To identify potential redirection …

“That Is Not The Question I Put To You, Officer”: An Analysis Of Student Legal Interpreting Errors, Jo Anna Burn, Ineke Crezee

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Court interpreting is a challenging and highly skilled profession. Legal questions are designed to achieve a large variety of functions. Often the true function is not the most obvious, the meaning is not literal, or there is no direct lexical or grammatical equivalent in the target language. Preparing interpreting students for interpreting legal questioning is very difficult and best achieved by exposing learners to a wide range of question forms in a safe practice environment. In order to ascertain which question types are most difficult to interpret, the authors undertook an analysis of question forms extracted from courtroom discourse, had …

Random Access In Nondelimited Variable-Length Record Collections For Parallel Reading With Hadoop, Jason Anderson, Christopher Gropp, Linh Ngo, Amy W. Apon

Publications

The industry standard Packet CAPture (PCAP) format for storing network packet traces is normally only readable in serial due to its lack of delimiters, indexing, or blocking. This presents a challenge for parallel analysis of large networks, where packet traces can be many gigabytes in size. In this work we present RAPCAP, a novel method for random access into variable-length record collections like PCAP by identifying a record boundary within a small number of bytes of the access point. Unlike related heuristic methods that can limit scalability with a nonzero probability of error, the new method offers a correctness guarantee …

Evaluating The Impact Of The Physical Fidelity Of The Learning Environment On Skill Acquisition, Retention, And Application, Myrtede Alfred

All Dissertations

Simulations are believed to support learning outcomes by increasing student engagement and providing a more immersive and interactive learning environment. Research into the effectiveness of simulations as learning tools has found tangible benefits, including increased learner engagement and conceptual gains Simulations also offer the benefits of a safer and more accessible learning environment, where students can practice until the point of proficiency. While simulations have been used extensively in workforce education, there is a limited research that compares learning outcomes – affective, skill-based, and cognitive – when learning in the physical environment is substituted with learning in a simulated environment, …

Carbon And Boron Nitride Nanocomposites For Electrically And/Or Thermally Conductive Materials, Ankoma Dihon Anderson Sr.

All Dissertations

Herein, we report research centered on the use of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for their electrical conductivity (EC) , or more specifically the harvesting of metallic-SWNTs for their extremely high EC, and on the exploitation of carbon and boron nitride nano-fillers for polymeric composites of high thermal conductivity (TC). SWNTs as produced are a mixture of both metallic and semiconducting components , which are distinctively different in electrical conductivity and many other aspects. Thus post-production separation of -SWNTs from their mixtures in the as-produced samples is necessary. As a result, my dissertation is formatted as such: the first chapter …

Suicidal Behaviors Among College Students: Are Transfer Students At Greater Risk?, Laura S. Bogardus May 2017

Suicidal Behaviors Among College Students: Are Transfer Students At Greater Risk?, Laura S. Bogardus

All Dissertations

Suicide is a major health concern on U.S. college campuses. Research on risk and protective factors related to suicidal behaviors among college students has revealed that certain student populations such as veterans, international students, and LGBTQ students may be at greater risk for suicide. However, no known research on undergraduate transfer student status in relation to suicide ideation and attempts exists. Using the Triadic Theory of Influence (TTI) (Flay & Petraitis, 1994) as a framework, this study seeks to shed light on the relationship between transfer student status and suicide ideation and attempts, as well as the hypothesized mediating effects …
