Evaluation Of Animal Manure-Based Compost As An Environmental Source Of Clostridium Difficile, Muthu Dharmasena

All Dissertations

The number of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) cases associated with healthcare and community is increasing. Increased isolation of this pathogen from environmental samples of soil, water, livestock animals and their feces, and produce suggests its dissemination in the environment. Identification, molecular characterization, and revealing the relationship of those isolates with human pathogenicity would be very helpful in understanding the epidemiology of CDI. Livestock manure is a rich source of nutrients for the growth of many crops, and composted manure is widely used as a fertilizer in organic farming. Microbial activities increase the temperature of composting materials, providing sufficient heat to …

The Chronic Toxicity Of Ion Mixtures To Freshwater Organisms: Ceriodaphnia Dubia And Pimephales Promelas (Fathead Minnow), Katherine Anne Johnson-Couch

All Dissertations

Dissolved ions are natural components of aquatic systems, the concentration and composition of which are greatly controlled by the surrounding geological material present. Although naturally occurring, many anthropogenic activities, including mountaintop removal mining, road deicing practices, agricultural irrigation and coal-fired power plant effluents, can greatly increase dissolved ion concentrations, as well as alter the ionic composition of freshwater systems. An increase in dissolved ions is positively correlated with an increase in salinity and conductivity. Dissolved ions have many important physiological functions within aquatic organisms, one of which is to create electrochemical gradients within cells. These gradients are necessary for controlling …

Mechanisms Of Fluconazole-Based Aneuploidy In Cryptococcus Neoformans, Damiana Altamirano

All Dissertations

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that primarily infects the immunocompromised. It is responsible for approximately 180,000 deaths per year in individuals with HIV. Fluconazole (FLC) is a fungistatic drug widely used to treat cryptococcosis and prevent recurrence. C. neoformans exhibits an intrinsic heteroresistance to FLC, which is an emerging barrier to effective treatment especially in resource-limited regions where FLC is often the only therapy available. Previous studies have demonstrated that C. neoformans cells confer resistance to FLC through aneuploid formation. The mechanisms underlying aneuploid formation during FLC treatment are unknown. This dissertation characterizes the effects of the initial …

The Desubjectified Subject In The Poetry Of Rosmarie Waldrop, Amanda Rebecca Johnson

All Theses

Criticism of Rosmarie Waldrop’s Driven to Abstraction has centered around her fascination with the notion of zero as both a negation and the locus of infinity, but has so far neglected to discuss the implications that this lacuna has on the role of the subject. True to its title, Driven takes the reader on a journey toward nothingness where desubjectification is made into the subject of the work. Through the use of the prose poem which eschews traditional poetic form and conventional syntax, Waldrop employs a collage that not only provides material representation of abstract concepts, but also demonstrates the …

Edward Ii: Negotiations Of Credit In The Early Modern Public Sphere, Jane E. Kuebler May 2018

Edward Ii: Negotiations Of Credit In The Early Modern Public Sphere, Jane E. Kuebler

All Theses

This paper addresses the role that Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II plays in the establishing and expanding of an early modern public sphere. By examining the ways that power is earned, and wielded in the play, Marlowe demonstrates an economy of cultural credit that operates in both the financial and the socio/political spheres of public life in early modern England. Marlowe applies the logic of that economy beyond the realm of the common people and subjects the historical monarch to the same parameters of judgement that flourished in society, drawing parallels with the currently reigning Elizabeth I, and opening up a …
