Investigating Seismic Successes And Failures In 1886 Charleston, James Stevenson Lyles
Investigating Seismic Successes And Failures In 1886 Charleston, James Stevenson Lyles
All Theses
The Charleston Earthquake of 1886 damaged every recorded masonry building on the Charleston Peninsula. Newer unreinforced masonry buildings experienced more extensive damage than older ones. A USGS survey of this phenomenon, produced in 1889 by Captain C. E. Dutton, concluded that this variation in damage was caused by the difference in seismicity between “made” ground and solid ground. A more recent study by Robinson and Talwani (1983) concluded that quality of materials and craftmanship in construction caused the variation in damage. This thesis assesses Charleston’s masonry buildings’ susceptibility to seismic damage by their orientation, date of construction, brick bond, use, …
Waves Of Change: An Analysis Of Protective Measures At Historically African American Beaches And Their Application To American Beach, Florida, Katie Elizabeth Martin
Waves Of Change: An Analysis Of Protective Measures At Historically African American Beaches And Their Application To American Beach, Florida, Katie Elizabeth Martin
All Theses
The objective of this thesis was to analyze the protective strategies and tools that are available to preserve the historic character of African American beaches across the country. This thesis looks at protective measures available to address the three greatest threats to historic African American beaches: loss from neglect, loss of character from incompatible development, and loss from natural disasters. The potential protective measures were then analyzed to see which measures would be applicable to the protection of American Beach; a historically African American Beach in Florida. The most feasible options for American Beach were taken into consideration and presented …
An Investigation, Development, And Application Of Lighting Design For Virtual Reality Using Unreal Engine, Sarah Lydia Ann Martin
An Investigation, Development, And Application Of Lighting Design For Virtual Reality Using Unreal Engine, Sarah Lydia Ann Martin
All Theses
Humanity has used lighting for millennia to chase away encroaching darkness, to increase the power of narrative, and to enhance the appeal and mood in crafted en-vironments. Theater, cinema, and architecture, among other fields, have developed, applied, and refined concepts of using light as a directed tool, but the relatively young field of virtual reality has not yet developed rigorous conventions. This thesis doc-ument describes work in investigating, developing, and applying designs for lighting conventions in virtual reality. Traditional artwork, photography, cinema, video-game, and environment lighting are considered and used to extrapolate concepts for lighting within virtual-reality applications. The developed …
Man And Technology: The Glitch In Nature's System, Carey W. Morton
Man And Technology: The Glitch In Nature's System, Carey W. Morton
All Theses
This work acknowledges the tangible and intangible attributes found in the complex relationship between man and nature. The human capability of manipulating the environment continues to grow at an exponential rate. The technology by which this is achieved has progressed to unprecedented heights. While this evolution has made leaps and bounds in the continuous struggle to achieve mastery over the natural world, advancements in technology challenge the very foundations of human experience. Processing this phenomenon through my own background in the rural American South, there is a nostalgic and anthropologic component to the display and content of the installations as …
An Investigation Of Modeing Behaviors In Function Structure Modeling With Respect To Chaining Methods, Apurva Rajesh Patel
An Investigation Of Modeing Behaviors In Function Structure Modeling With Respect To Chaining Methods, Apurva Rajesh Patel
All Theses
The systematic engineering design process equips designers with tools and methods necessary to understand and solve a given design problem. Function decomposition is one such tool that allows designers to decompose the given problem into sub-problems which may be easier to address. Research on Function modeling, specifically Function Structure models, has focused on improving model construction techniques and using the Function Structure models to support concept generation. Additionally, Function Structure models have also been traditionally used as individual design tools; however, most other conceptual design tools are used in a collaborative setting (e.g. gallery sketching, method 3-6-5, etc.). This research …
Quantifying Aqueous Plutonium Using Hybrid Extractive Scintillation Resins, Amruta Balappa Pujari
Quantifying Aqueous Plutonium Using Hybrid Extractive Scintillation Resins, Amruta Balappa Pujari
All Theses
Hybrid extractive scintillating resins (HESR) were developed for uptake and detection of aqueous plutonium (Pu). These resins consist of titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is responsible for Pu uptake, embedded in the scintillating resin. The scintillating resin emits light when excited by alpha radiation from plutonium which can be detected with a photomultiplier tube (PMT). Two main approaches were used for preparing these resins; first, incorporating inorganic compounds after polymerization: post-polymerization methods (HESR-I) and second, incorporating inorganic compounds before polymerization: pre-polymerization method (HESR-II). The physical characterization of HESR was done using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray …

Animation, live-action, and virtual reality all use effects to further express the artistic vision of story creators. The effects help immerse the viewer in a fantasy world that is unlike anything that exists on Earth. In this paper I explain the planning, creation, and final implementation of various effects assets for Making Friends (an animated short), Right to Bear Arms and Hot Air (live-action shorts), and Journey to Proxima Centauri: Terror of the Mnar (a virtual reality experience). I also cover some of the differences and limitations when creating effects for animation, live-action, and virtual reality. Lastly, I explore if …
The Role Of Social Distance In Narrative Persuasion For Risk Prevention, Yiwei Xu
The Role Of Social Distance In Narrative Persuasion For Risk Prevention, Yiwei Xu
All Theses
This research was designed to examine how narrative messages about safe driving in media can influence favorable persuasive outcomes related to driving without cell phone use. Based on the entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM) and construal level theory (CLT), three hypotheses were proposed that considered the role of narrative engagement and persuasive resistance in increasing favorable outcomes associated with safe driving. For this study in particular, CLT and EORM predicted that a narrative featuring low social distance would be more effective in increasing favorable persuasive outcomes by increasing narrative engagement and decreasing persuasive resistance. It was also predicted that narrative …
Polymer Materials Via Melt Based 3d Printing: Fabrication And Characterization, Pu Zhu
Polymer Materials Via Melt Based 3d Printing: Fabrication And Characterization, Pu Zhu
All Theses
Additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, first emerged in the 1980s. Currently, the application of 3D printing has been expanded to various areas, such as automotive, aerospace and bio-engineering to mention a few. However, a number of serious challenges with the 3D printing fabrication have been found such as lower mechanical characteristics, relatively high surface roughness and anisotropy in mechanical and physical properties. To expand 3D printing technology into practical final products manufacturing, the improvement of the mechanical properties for the 3D printed parts should be addressed. To this end, the work reported in this thesis is focusing on …

Differential Enforcement Of Title Vii Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 With Respect To Sex Discrimination, Tracy Leigh Garnar
All Theses
This study uses sociological frameworks to examine the effects that judges’ personal characteristics, such as race, sex, political affiliation, and political ideology, as well as personal characteristics of the plaintiff, such as race and sex, have on cases filed in federal appellate courts dealing with sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Previous research examining these factors have produced conflicting results. This study, using data extracted from Title VII cases dealing with sex from federal appellate courts from 1995 to 2002, attempts to tease out these different effects. Results indicate that the political ideology of …

Vascular Tissue Engineering In Metabolic Syndrome Conditions – In Vitro Studies, Anna Lu Carter
All Theses
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is on the rise in the US and is the leading cause of death worldwide [1]. Associated disorders including stenosis of the vasculature and formation of atherosclerotic plaques can necessitate the need for repair or replacement. Tissue engineering, based on stem cells and scaffolds, is an emerging strategy for the treatment of vascular diseases. Patients who typically require vascular replacement often have comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension. There remains the challenge of understanding the fate of tissue engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) in a harsh diabetic environment.
In these experiments we aimed to develop an in-vitro vascular …

Subventricular zone (SVZ) neural stem cells (NSCs) are the cornerstone of the perinatal neurogenic niche. Microglia are immune cells of the nervous system that are enriched in the neonatal SVZ. Although microglia regulate NSCs, the extent to which this interaction is bi-directional is unclear. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived particles that encase miRNA and proteins. Here, we demonstrate that SVZ NSCs generate and release EVs. Neonatal electroporated fluorescent EV fusion proteins were released by NSCs and subsequently cleared from the SVZ. EVs were preferentially targeted to microglia. Small RNA sequencing identified miRNAs within the EVs that regulate microglia physiology and …
