Beyond Bilingual Programming: Interpreter Education In The U.S. Amidst Increasing Linguistic Diversity, David Quinto-Pozos
Beyond Bilingual Programming: Interpreter Education In The U.S. Amidst Increasing Linguistic Diversity, David Quinto-Pozos
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The purpose of this study was to determine the current state of educational opportunities for college and university-level students who wish to incorporate Spanish into their study of ASL–English interpretation. The number of Spanish–English–ASL interpreters is growing at a rapid pace in the United States, and demand for such interpreters is notable—especially in video relay service settings (Quinto-Pozos, Alley, Casanova de Canales, & Treviño, 2015; Quinto-Pozos, Casanova de Canales, & Treviño, 2010). Unfortunately, there appear to be few educational programs that prepare students for such multilingual interpreting. The number of these programs is currently not known (in that information has …

Yeats’S White Vellum Notebook, 1930–1933, Wayne K. Chapman
Yeats’S White Vellum Notebook, 1930–1933, Wayne K. Chapman
International Yeats Studies
This essay examines the present state of affairs concerning “one of the great literary manuscripts of our time, the great vellum notebook” that Sotheby’s advertised and sold for the first time in 1985. That sale and a subsequent one in 1990 are related to the contents of the notebook as ascertained from finding aids used by the editors of the Cornell Yeats series, including Chapman, as well as from the examination of extant microfilms of the notebook, the location of the original having been lost. Particularly useful for new and on-going textual-genetic studies in Yeats collections at the National Library …

Coming Together Around Hashtags: Exploring The Formation Of Digital Emergent Citizen Groups, Andrew S. Pyle, Brandon Boatwright
Coming Together Around Hashtags: Exploring The Formation Of Digital Emergent Citizen Groups, Andrew S. Pyle, Brandon Boatwright
Publications
It has been well established that during and after crisis or emergency events, groups of citizens come together to help one another, solve problems, and manage recovery or cleanup. These groups are called emergent citizen groups. They form organically and often disband when the emergency is managed. This study proposes that similar types of groups now form in digital spaces during and after crises. The authors studied conversation on Twitter that used the hashtag “#PrayforUSC” after the murder-suicide that took place at the University of South Carolina in 2015. Initial results indicate that hashtags can function as focal points or …

The aims of this study were to 1) describe endocrine therapy (ET) non-initiation, non-adherence, and duration by age, race, and temporal trend; 2) identify demographic, clinical, and pharmaceutical factors that are associated with an individual’s ET usage; and 3) understand from the survivor perspective which modifiable factors could have the greatest impact on the likelihood of ET continuation.
This study utilized a convergent parallel mixed methods design. The sample included female South Carolina (SC) residents ages 18-64 at diagnosis with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. SC Central Cancer Registry incidence data linked with South Carolina Medicaid data (N=3,830) were along with …
A Practical Guide To Eye Tracking Using Qualitative And Quantitative Means, Julie Christine Rice
A Practical Guide To Eye Tracking Using Qualitative And Quantitative Means, Julie Christine Rice
All Dissertations
This research sought to define how typical eye tracking studies are executed and improve the process with qualitative and quantitative methods. Eye tracking is a tool to collect and analyze the behavioral biometrics of consumers. Eye tracking can facilitate a wide range of research, and is commonly used in conjunction with other forms of data collection. The availability of eye tracking has increased in the last decade, leading to more companies using this technology as an avenue for market research. Despite the popularity of eye tracking technology, there is little emphasis in literature concerning the development of benchmarks of aggregate …
Behavioral, Functional, And Shape Assessment For Temporomandibular Joint, Feng Wei
Behavioral, Functional, And Shape Assessment For Temporomandibular Joint, Feng Wei
All Dissertations
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders affect over 10 million people in the US with an annual economic cost of more than $4 billion. Due to intriguing etiological factors of TMJ disorders, objective and accurate diagnosis is difficult and so is with the treatment. Consequently, there is the high recurrence rate. To make the situation even worse, many other types of diseases, including cancer, share symptoms and signs with TMJ disorders. Early non-invasive, objective, subject-specific and accurate diagnosis is vital because incorrect or delayed diagnosis can cause patients to miss optimal treatment times, increase unnecessary therapy expenses and even endanger patients’ lives. …

Ph-Responsive Mercaptoundecanoic Acid Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles And Applications In Catalysis, Siyam M. Ansar, Saptarshi Chakraborty, Christopher L. Kitchens
Publications
Mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNP-MUA) were synthesized and demonstrated to possess pH-triggered aggregation and re-dispersion, as well as the capability of phase transfer between aqueous and organic phases in response to changes in pH. The pH of aggregation for AuNP-MUA is consistent with the pKa of MUA (pH ~4) in solution, while AuNP-MUA phase transition between aqueous and organic phases occurs at pH ~9. The ion pair formation between the amine group in octadecylamine (ODA), the carboxylate group in MUA, and the hydrophobic alkyl chain of ODA facilitates the phase transfer of AuNP-MUA into an organic medium. …

Return With Honor: An Investigation Of The Reentry Experiences And Discourses Of Returning Missionaries In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Garrett Stone
All Dissertations
Reentry is one of the most difficult and important periods of a traveler’s journey – a time to reflect on and integrate new experiences, identities, and perspectives into life at home. This period is often bittersweet and marked by a host of challenges and symptomology. Religious language and practice may function to alleviate or exacerbate these routine reentry challenges, or introduce a host of new concerns. Situated in the nexus of religion and tourism, the purpose of this critical-constructive qualitative inquiry is to (a) investigate the experiences and discourses of returning missionaries in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day …

Who Am I? Refugee Adolescents' Transformation And Negotiation Of Identities At The Cultural Borders, Aamena Saleh
Who Am I? Refugee Adolescents' Transformation And Negotiation Of Identities At The Cultural Borders, Aamena Saleh
All Dissertations
Many gaps exist in the research on refugee students in general, with the overall portrayal in the literature presenting a school experience in which refugees struggle academically, socially, and emotionally (Roxas, 2008; McBrien, 2005; Lerner, 2012; Lustig, 2004; Smith & Halbert, 2013). Current research discusses social and linguistic struggles frequently, and highlights the need for schools to acknowledge refugees’ backgrounds and draw on their linguistic repertoires to aid their acquisition of the English language (Cummins, 2005; Cummins, et al., 2006; Gutierrez, Baquedano-Lopez, & Tejeda, 1999; Gutierrez, Baquedano-Lopez, Alvarez, & Chiu, 1999). Little has been done to uncover who refugees are …
Dis/Orienting 'Middle East': A Cart-Rhetorical Rhizomatic Mapping, Eda Ozyesilpinar
Dis/Orienting 'Middle East': A Cart-Rhetorical Rhizomatic Mapping, Eda Ozyesilpinar
All Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the association between the geopolitical region Middle East and the unjust profiling of Islamic terrorism. I examine this connection from the lens of border-politics and deconstruct Western cartographic discourses that constructed the current misrepresentative and extensively totalizing identity of Middle East as the land of Muslim terrorists. My conjecture is framed around Karen Culcasi’s argument on how Middle East was re-invented in the discourse of Orientalism during the early twentieth century. To challenge the region’s current misrepresentative and unjust socio-spatial identity, I map how the region’s inherently othered identity under the European gaze of Orientalism has …
