Re-Imagining The Rhetorics Of Human-Computer Interaction: Addressing Hcl Issues And Problems In Non-Western Cultures, Octaviyanti Dwi Wahyurini
Re-Imagining The Rhetorics Of Human-Computer Interaction: Addressing Hcl Issues And Problems In Non-Western Cultures, Octaviyanti Dwi Wahyurini
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
The current Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) knowledge is designed and developed from Western thinking, neglecting the non-Western rhetorical and cultural situation that determines or at least informs users in Non-Western settings to react to the computer technology. In those Non-Western countries with communal and collective ways of living and communication, HCI needs to be responsive to these people's need. This research is to propose new approach to create better engagement in HCI through rhetoric as a practice for people from the Non-Western community.

Extra-Curricular Engagements: A Case For Provocative Displays, Kathy Edwards
Extra-Curricular Engagements: A Case For Provocative Displays, Kathy Edwards
Presentations
As the solo librarian at Clemson University’s Gunnin Architecture Library (gate count last year: 71,000), I have the luxury of programming the most high-profile lighted display wall in an active, multi-disciplinary academic building. Over the past year, I have transformed this opportunity into a ‘bully pulpit,’ serving up the big, wide world beyond South Carolina to a mostly homegrown student body. Instead of curriculum-based exhibits, I engage faculty, colleagues, friends, and students in collaborating to stage extra-curricular ‘provocations’: interdisciplinary displays that use library materials to showcase social and political currents, issues, and global cultures.
Example exhibit titles:
Art for political …

A Road Taken: A Cataloging Team Becomes A Metadata Team, Scott M. Dutkiewicz, Jessica L. Serrao
A Road Taken: A Cataloging Team Becomes A Metadata Team, Scott M. Dutkiewicz, Jessica L. Serrao
Publications
This chapter describes the issues confronted along the “road taken” by a technical services team as it transitioned from traditional monographic cataloging to metadata for digital collections. To serve changing user needs, the team shifted focus to providing quality metadata. Along this road, the team confronted and welcomed a number of changes. These included a unit merger, off-site relocation, shedding the cataloging role, learning how to produce metadata, identifying areas for growth with a library-wide Metadata Summit, working with new stakeholders, and managing new staff and faculty. The chapter concludes with the lessons the team learned and its prospects.

Fixing The Sic: Preventing And Managing Self-Inficted Crises, Andrew S. Pyle

Social media platforms provide channels for both individuals and organizations to engage with global audiences. A successful social media message can reach millions and shape the way the public views a particular person, group, or cause. As organizations become more engaged with the public through social media platforms, a new area of organizational risk has also developed. It is possible for an organization to create a self-inflicted crisis through the unintentional transmission of a poorly worded or ill-conceived social media message. This type of self-induced crisis event creates organizational conflict that must be managed quickly. This chapter explores three cases …

(Mis)Alignments In Mentorship: Exploring Challenges To Preservice Science Teacher Preparation, Mandy Biggers, Alison Riley Miller, Laura Zangori, Brooke A. Whitworth
(Mis)Alignments In Mentorship: Exploring Challenges To Preservice Science Teacher Preparation, Mandy Biggers, Alison Riley Miller, Laura Zangori, Brooke A. Whitworth
Publications
The mentoring relationships between preservice teachers and their cooperating teachers have been established as critical to the retention or attrition of novice teachers (Clarke, Triggs, & Nielsen, 2014), yet little research has been conducted to examine what factors around mentor teacher selection and support are most salient to creating strong mentoring structures. In this study, we investigated how four U.S. states (one in the Southwest, one in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, and one in the South) recruit mentor teachers for secondary science preservice teachers, what requirements the mentor teachers must possess, how mentor teachers are incentivized to serve …
Use Of Physical Activity Monitoring Devices By Families In Rural Communities: Qualitative Approach, Iryna Sharaievska, Rebecca A. Battista, Jennifer Zwetsloot
Use Of Physical Activity Monitoring Devices By Families In Rural Communities: Qualitative Approach, Iryna Sharaievska, Rebecca A. Battista, Jennifer Zwetsloot
Publications
Background: Several studies support the impact of information communication technology–based interventions to promote physical activity among youth. However, little is known on how technology can be used by the entire family to encourage healthy behavior. Previous studies showed that children and youth rely and are dependent upon the decisions and values of their caregivers when it comes to having a healthy lifestyle. Thus, the exploration of behavior and attitudes of the entire family is needed.
Objective: The study aimed to explore (1) perceptions of how the use of physical activity tracking devices (Fitbit Zip) by families in rural communities influence …

South Carolina Groundwater Availability Assessment: 2017 Stakeholder Outreach And Engagement Results, Thomas Walker Iii, Lori Dickes, Jeffery Allen
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
An update of the State Water Plan is underway in South Carolina. The purpose of the State Water Plan is to develop a water resources policy for South Carolina. A significant portion of the State Water Plan update is to include stakeholders into the planning process. Clemson University continues to facilitate the stakeholder engagement components of the steps to an updated water plan. This research is pertinent to the Groundwater Availability Assessment phase of the State Water Planning process. Overall, stakeholders were interested in all identified groundwater areas of interest in South Carolina. Additionally, they intended to be involved in …
An Online Tool For Estimating Evapotranspiration And Irrigation Requirements Of Crops In South Carolina, Jose O. Payero
An Online Tool For Estimating Evapotranspiration And Irrigation Requirements Of Crops In South Carolina, Jose O. Payero
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
In recent years, there has been an increased interest in South Carolina regarding the amount of water used by different consumers, especially agricultural producers. This interest has sparked conversations among different stakeholders, including the media, policy makers, producers, scientists, and the general public, regarding the current state and future of water resources in the state. Central to these discussions, from the agricultural sector perspective, is the question of how much water producers really need to grow crops. The objective of this study was, therefore, to develop an online tool to use local South Carolina historic weather data to estimate daily …

Shattering The Crystal Goblet: Seeking A Pedagogy Of Visuality In Post - Typographic Expository Texts, David Reinking
Shattering The Crystal Goblet: Seeking A Pedagogy Of Visuality In Post - Typographic Expository Texts, David Reinking
Publications
This article synthesizes diverse theoretical perspectives toward developing a pedagogy that addresses the visuality of digital texts. To frame those perspectives and their implications, I use a well - known analogy that Beatrice Warde introduced to typographers in the 1930s: drinking wine from a golden cup or a crystal goblet. I briefly review the theory and research related to visual aspects of texts, generating pedagogical perspectives from several prominent theories and perspectives. I then discuss, illustrated with a few examples, how these pedagogical perspectives might be instantiated in curriculum and instruction and the issues and challenges of doing so. I …
Heuristics For Communicating Science, Risk, And Crisis, Katherine E. Rowan, Andrew S. Pyle
Heuristics For Communicating Science, Risk, And Crisis, Katherine E. Rowan, Andrew S. Pyle

Scientific information about physical hazards is important and very easy to miscommunicate. Because science uses complex wording and sophisticated reasoning, many assume that sharing science with lay stakeholders is solely a matter of substituting simple words and sentences for unfamiliar terms and complex syntax. An additional frequent assumption is that ‘giving information’ or ‘educating’ are the only important goals when communicating with stakeholders about health and the environment. Indeed, one study shows that, among scientists who share science online with lay stakeholders, their principal goals when communicating with lay audiences are to ‘educate’ or ‘defend science’. Although these goals are …

Realmente Tenemos La Capacidad: Engaging Youth To Explore Health In The Dominican Republic Through Photovoice, Catalina Tang Yan, Arelis Moore De Peralta, Edmond P. Bowers, Linda Sprague Martinez
Publications
Youth are often at risk for physical and psychosocial illnesses, and yet their input is rarely included in health assessments and interventions. Two U.S.-based universities partnered with community stakeholders and youth in Las Malvinas II, Dominican Republic to explore factors that promote and/or hinder the health of youth in Las Malvinas II. Youth (n=8) conducted a photovoice, and identified six key health priorities: (1) good nutrition, (2) depression and poverty, (3) violence, (4) sports and neighborhood association, (5) education, and (6) sanitation and community infrastructure. Findings revealed youth’s exploration of complex multi-level determinants of health. This study suggests youth have …

The Role Of Social Media In Enhancing Risk Communication And Promoting Community Resilience In The Midst Of A Disaster, Kathryn E. Anthony, Steven J. Venette, Andrew S. Pyle, Brandon C. Boatwright, Carrie E. Reif-Stice

The importance of engendering community resilience after a disaster event cannot be overstated. In this chapter, we argue that the strategic design of risk communication messages is critical for communities affected by crises. In the past, many communication practitioners employed the single shot, top-down approach for constructing messages, especially during crises. Given growing recognition of the ineffectiveness of this model, scholars have become more attentive to the role of message design in conveying risk to stakeholders. Specifically, through the lens of the message convergence framework, we argue the need for a multiple messages approach that targets diverse groups of people …

Clemson Libraries - Carnegie Research 1 Task Force Report, Clemson University Libraries
Publications
The Becoming a R1 Library Task Force was charged with exploring what it would mean for Clemson Libraries to become a “Research 1 Library.” Specifically, our purpose was to conduct research and collect data with the following aims in mind:
1. To evaluate Clemson’s current operations
2. To discern the differences between operations of spaces, services, collections, and resources at Clemson Libraries and 12 specific aspirational peer R1 Libraries
3. To offer recommendations to help Clemson Libraries bridge the gap
This report contains two sections: Section I outlines benchmarking against aspirational peer libraries and Section II contains recommendations based on …
