‘There’S Stuff Beyond Sport’: A Study Of The Realities And Perceptions Of Student-Athlete Body Image Concerns, Drive For Muscularity, And Eating Behaviors, Lauren Elizabeth Stephens
‘There’S Stuff Beyond Sport’: A Study Of The Realities And Perceptions Of Student-Athlete Body Image Concerns, Drive For Muscularity, And Eating Behaviors, Lauren Elizabeth Stephens
All Dissertations
Eating-related pathologies such as body image concerns, drive for muscularity, and disordered eating behaviors are among the issues plaguing student-athletes today, as the pressure to look a certain way may rival the pressure to perform. Although concerns regarding body image and eating behaviors are not exclusive to student-athletes, their unique roles on college campuses and in communities often place them at greater risk for the development of eating-related concerns. As negative eating-related psychopathologies may have an impact not only on sport performance but also on overall health and well-being, it is important to understand predictive factors that may influence body …

Nanoparticle Doped Optical Fibers For High Energy Lasers, Amber L. Vargas
Nanoparticle Doped Optical Fibers For High Energy Lasers, Amber L. Vargas
All Theses
Fabrication of rare earth (RE) doped optical fibers for use in fiber-based lasers and amplifiers is conventionally performed using a solution doping technique where RE salts (i.e., ErCl3) are dissolved in a solvent, introduced into the porous silica soot, dried and consolidated to form the active fiber core. This process does not allow for tailoring of the chemical environment about the RE. Alternatively, nanoparticle (NP) doping is more recent approach to incorporating rare earths into an optical fiber and have been shown to permit modification of the chemical environment around the RE in ways the enhance spectroscopic performance. This is …

Experts estimate that approximately one third of the worldwide population currently owns a smartphone, and subscriptions continue to grow. Compared to mobile devices of the past decade, smartphones provide desktop computer-level processing power in a palm-sized package. However, the high computing power and 24 hours - 7 days a week connectivity results in a shorter battery life, often forcing the user to rely on portable battery packs. Worldwide energy consumption statistics show that the electric power grid depends primarily on fossil fuels. Thus, a renewable power source based on human motion energy harvesting offers a potential solution to power portable …
Phosphorylation Of Eukaryotic Initiation Factor-2 Alpha In Response To Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Nitrosative Stress In The Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Heather Andrews Walters
Phosphorylation Of Eukaryotic Initiation Factor-2 Alpha In Response To Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Nitrosative Stress In The Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Heather Andrews Walters
All Theses
Entamoeba histolytica is an intestinal parasite infecting over 50 million people worldwide and is the causative agent of amebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess. In the human host and nonhuman primates, E. histolytica experiences stress brought on by nutrient deprivation and the host immune response. To be a successful parasite, E. histolytica must counter the stress; therefore, understanding the stress response may uncover new drug targets. In many systems, the stress response includes down-regulation of general protein translation, which is regulated by phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF-2α). Previous work in E. histolytica has demonstrated that EheIF-2α phosphorylation increases …
Barriers To Public Knowledge Transfer Within The Field Of Communication, Vincent White
Barriers To Public Knowledge Transfer Within The Field Of Communication, Vincent White
All Theses
Scholars have debated whether communication research is producing an impact on communication practices and outcomes. With the communication discipline being uniquely positioned to be both relevant and applicable to public audiences, the relevance and applicability of the discipline are futile if the final resting place of communication scholarship is academic journals. A fundamental element of producing significant research that addresses society's biggest problems is communicating with public audiences. The purpose of this research was to understand any challenges involved in the public knowledge transfer (KT) of research by communication faculty to public audiences. Identifying participants through Criterion Sampling, this research …

Comparing And Analyzing Organization Responses To Crises Through Stakeholder Engagement Between The Cruise And Hotel Industries, Cody Caster Norris
All Theses
Crises in the tourism industries are repeatedly occurring and the way organizations respond have yet to reach an acceptable level expected by crisis communication scholars based on current literature and research. Through a comparative case study, cruise line crises will be examined through the lens of Discourse of Renewal and compared to hotel crises to determine how the both tourism organizations are responding and engaging with stakeholders during these crises. Furthermore, insight and implications of current crisis response efforts and guidelines on how cruise lines should transition to best practices are offered.
Implicit Stereotypes: An Explanation For The Lack Of Female Leadership In The Stem Fields?, Katherine N. Brown
Implicit Stereotypes: An Explanation For The Lack Of Female Leadership In The Stem Fields?, Katherine N. Brown
All Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate why there is a lack of female leadership in the STEM fields. Literature shows that there are a variety of gender stereotypes that may be an impediment to women seeking leadership roles in the STEM fields. The present study combined information about gender stereotypes regarding leadership ability and gender stereotypes regarding math and reasoning ability in attempt to explain the lack of female participation and leadership in the STEM fields. An implicit association test (IAT) was administered to measure implicit gender stereotypes about leadership, and IAT scores had the expected positive relationships …
Remnants Of Existence: Discovering Value In Loss, Andrea Hardin Garland
Remnants Of Existence: Discovering Value In Loss, Andrea Hardin Garland
All Theses
Those who precede us in the continuum of humanity may affect our lives even if we are unaware of their influence. To illustrate the residue of previous generations, I emboss textiles inherited from my Southern American family. Formerly useful and distinctly decorative, these embroidered handkerchiefs, crocheted doilies, lace nightgowns and dress gloves are now antiquated curiosities. Using the force of a printing press, I form shadowy impressions of the articles on paper to communicate presence in absence, then manipulate the images with various media. I literally rinse, wring and dry many of these works in an effort to elevate the …
On The Edge Of The World: Examining Pro-Environmental Outcomes Of Last Chance Tourism In Kaktovik, Alaska, Lauren Miller
On The Edge Of The World: Examining Pro-Environmental Outcomes Of Last Chance Tourism In Kaktovik, Alaska, Lauren Miller
All Theses
Travel to impact-sensitive destinations has been on the rise in recent years. Coined last chance tourism (LCT), visitors are flocking to these imperiled destinations to see them before they are gone. To off-set their presence, which ultimately contributes to site degradation, a possible positive outcome of these LCT experiences is the creation of environmental ambassadors. Utilizing data collected from 189 visitor surveys, the purpose of this study is to provide a basis for understanding the visitor experience and outcomes of boat-based polar bear viewing in the Kaktovik area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This study contributes to current literature …

All Theses
This thesis showcases the background research and production of assets for an animated short film, Off the Top. This film tells the story of two Viking men who have a physical confrontation, which is resolved by the end of the narrative in a comedic fashion. This project draws elements from Viking history and culture to drive the design of the environment and characters in the story. Additionally, this thesis presents several methods for creating visually interesting props, environments, and characters that leverage procedurally-driven techniques for both modeling and surfacing.
The Impact Of Color On Visual Retention And Preference In Logo Design, Aaron Taylor Alexander
The Impact Of Color On Visual Retention And Preference In Logo Design, Aaron Taylor Alexander
All Theses
Color is often the first thing a person will be drawn to in an object. It fills the world and activates people’s imagination. The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact that color has on a person’s ability to recall visual information. Company logos are used as a focus for this due to the importance a logo has in the way companies market themselves. Therefore, a logo should be memorable at a second’s glance.
This thesis attempts to solve the problem of understanding what makes a logo more memorable to a customer in order to assure maximum visual …
An Understanding Of The Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background, Samalka Anandagoda
An Understanding Of The Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background, Samalka Anandagoda
All Theses
Neutrinos, some of the most elusive particles in the universe are emitted in copious numbers by core-collapse supernovae. Over the course of time, these particles create a faint cosmic background known as the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background(DSNB). The DSNB, if detected, can prove to be a powerful tool to constrain the cosmic star formation history and place significant constraints on the core-collapse supernova physics. In this work, we model this background field and estimate the DSNB flux in the energy range from 19 MeV to 100 MeV. We investigate the change of the spectral shape of the DSNB as the …
Integrating Self: A Story About A Tomato, Thomas Scott Rapp
Integrating Self: A Story About A Tomato, Thomas Scott Rapp
All Theses
Tomato is a two-dimensional, animated, short film about the interaction between a farmer and a tomato plant. Through conceptually-driven technique, the film intends to relate the emphasis of tactility and self-reflection in animation to the care of a plant that could provide a valuable fruit. Using digital tools, like Adobe Animate, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere, as well as material identification techniques, I created the film as an exhibition of a method designed to integrate hand-crafted elements into digital workflow.

All Theses
This thesis creates a short-form art piece primarily using modular 3D printed forms, photographed in a stop-motion animation style, and composited digitally into a finished product. It creates the lab space needed to print and photograph the piece; including lighting, set, and photography equipment. This project shows that it is possible for a single artist to come up with sufficient time-saving techniques in order to complete an entire work from start to finish. This work also shows it is possible to create a work that will inspire the emotions of fear, horror, and frustration that comes with the birth of …
Reprocessing Protocol Validation For Medical Devices Used In Low-Resource Settings, Sarah Zemitis
Reprocessing Protocol Validation For Medical Devices Used In Low-Resource Settings, Sarah Zemitis
All Theses
The World Health Organization acknowledges that single-use medical devices (SUDs) are commonly reprocessed and reused beyond their intended life to deliver patient care in low-resource settings. SUDs originally intended for use on one patient for one procedure are “reprocessed” in such cases, which involves cleaning, disinfection or sterilization, and functional testing before they are reused in hospitals. Studies have shown that reuse of SUDs in countries where reprocessing is unregulated can be safe if stringent standard operating procedures are followed.
The broad objective of this thesis was to validate a reprocessing protocol for the bag-valve-mask (BVM), a single-use device commonly …
Narrative And Environmentally Based Character Expression System For Gameplay-Centric Video Games, John C. Welter
Narrative And Environmentally Based Character Expression System For Gameplay-Centric Video Games, John C. Welter
All Theses
As technology progresses, so too does our ability to create visually stunning and incredibly immersive gaming experiences. With the power some consoles possess today, cinematic games have pushed the envelope of technology to deliver heavily animated, character driven stories not possible years ago. However, more “game-centric” games, in an effort to focus on gameplay and player projection, tend to neglect the possibilities of providing the same character driven experiences. In this paper, we present an animation system that would allow characters in traditionally gameplay-driven games to show the same amount of depth and growth as characters in other mediums. Our …

Armor Influences On Designing A Character Costume With 3d Modeling And Printing Methods, Genevieve Marie Watkins
Armor Influences On Designing A Character Costume With 3d Modeling And Printing Methods, Genevieve Marie Watkins
All Theses
This thesis documents the process of researching, creating, and constructing body armor for a live-action film character, from artists' concepts to 3D modeling methods to physical construction. Additionally, I will review the early and futuristic histories of armor designs, and their influences on the creation, composition, and construction of costume forms. Such review should reinforce the notion that it is important to understand the past for its influence on the future, and that a historical understanding of armor is vital to warrior costume design across multiple platforms.
The idea of a warrior is essential to the development and design of …
Reading Charlotte And Branwell Brontë’S Early Writings As Colonialist Fantasy, Kristian Nicole Wilson
Reading Charlotte And Branwell Brontë’S Early Writings As Colonialist Fantasy, Kristian Nicole Wilson
All Theses
Charlotte and Branwell Brontë’s collaborative writing project, the Glass Town saga, is rarely the subject of academic examination that does not analyze it as either a derivative of the works of Sir Walter Scott or a precursor to Jane Eyre and The Professor. This paper instead considers Glass Town as a work of early fantasy, a reading which allows for an examination of colonialism’s relationship to the genre in its infant stages. Connecting Glass Town to nineteenth-century European theories of African history and development, and to articles of African exploration and conquest, I contextualize the colonialist messages contained in …
A Change In Southern Character Through Southern Characters, Emma Mccracken
A Change In Southern Character Through Southern Characters, Emma Mccracken
All Theses
This dissertation traces the patterns in southern literature from the 1950s to 2019 that reveals a difference between an Old and New South that occurs circa 2000, when technology and urbanization was booming in the American south. However, it is important to note that it is not only the medium used to share works that is globalizing southern literature, but it is the way its writers have begun to break away from old tropes and traditions in the content of their writing. This pattern is best traced through the analysis of works by contemporary southern writers like Jill McCorkle, Randall …
Time-Lapse Monitoring Of Two-Dimensional Non-Uniform Unsaturated Flow Processes Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Blake Lytle
Time-Lapse Monitoring Of Two-Dimensional Non-Uniform Unsaturated Flow Processes Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Blake Lytle
All Theses
Unsaturated flow in the vadose zone often manifests as preferential flow resulting in transport of water and solutes through the soil much faster than would occur for uniform matrix flow. Time-lapse ground penetrating radar (TLGPR) shows promise as a non-invasive means to monitor unsaturated flow and here is used to monitor lab-scale forced infiltration events for capturing evidence of non-uniform and preferential flow phenomena directly from arrivals in the GPR images while simultaneously characterizing parameters of the flow system, such as bulk water content and rates of wetting front movement. This was accomplished by 1) directly interpreting transient arrivals in …

The World Health Organization predicts that two-thirds of all disease around the globe will be the result of lifestyle choices by the year 2020. Increasing obesity rates contribute to these climbing numbers. The direct relation between obesity and comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), Type II Diabetes, and hypertension cannot be denied. Obesity is directly associated with higher risks of developing CVD, Type II Diabetes, hypertension, and many other health conditions. All of the aforementioned health conditions are associated with physical activity, nutrition and other lifestyle behaviors. In order to combat these extremely prevalent health conditions, it is ideal to …
Planning For Cougars In An Urban Environment, Edward Drew Brittain
Planning For Cougars In An Urban Environment, Edward Drew Brittain
All Theses
Urban sprawl is a ubiquitous term and issue for planners across the United States. As sprawl occurs, planners are attempting to impede the effects (loss of biodiversity, increased effects of climate change, increased interaction between wildlife and urban environments) of converting natural spaces to land uses for humans through the integration of green infrastructure. This green movement (conservation/preservation of land, urban tree canopies, open space acquisition) has helped planners alleviate the resource externalities of urban expansion; however, new issues have risen in response.
One issue for planners has been the increased occurrences of wildlife in urban areas. While some of …
There’S More To The Story: Shedding Light On Conflict Species Identification And The Unknown Impacts Of Conflict With Predators, Diane Helene Dotson
There’S More To The Story: Shedding Light On Conflict Species Identification And The Unknown Impacts Of Conflict With Predators, Diane Helene Dotson
All Theses
Local people living near protected areas are often dependent on these areas for livestock grazing and forest product collection, and therefore may face conflict with predators. The direct impacts of predator conflict (i.e., injury/death of livestock/humans) have been widely researched, however, it is the indirect impacts (e.g., fear, stress, sleep deprivation, increased disease vulnerability, family dynamics, and time/effort of pursuing compensation), that have received little attention on general. Further, within human-wildlife conflict (HWC) literature there seems to be an underlying assumption that research participants are able to correctly identify the wildlife species that they are reporting caused both direct and …

Purpose
Self-driving cars are an extremely high level of autonomous technology and represent a promising technology that may help older adults safely maintain independence. However, human behavior with automation is complex and not straightforward (Parasuraman and Riley, 1997; Parasuraman, 2000; Rovira et al., 2007; Parasuraman and Wickens, 2008; Parasuraman and Manzey, 2010; Parasuraman et al., 2012). In addition, because no fully self-driving vehicles are yet available to the public, most research has been limited to subjective survey-based assessments that depend on the respondents’ limited knowledge based on second-hand reports and do not reflect …
