Horizontal Subcontracting In Procurement Auctions, Nancy Huff May 2012

Horizontal Subcontracting In Procurement Auctions, Nancy Huff

All Dissertations

A firm submitting a bid in a procurement auction is sometimes also listed as a subcontractor in one or more competing bids. This paper theoretically and empirically examines how such horizontal subcontracting affects welfare and price competition. I first specify a model of horizontal subcontracting which endogenizes the roles of the subcontracting firms as well as a negotiated payment for subcontracted work. The model shows that horizontal subcontracting always weakly increases welfare by enabling more efficient allocation of production but has two opposite effects on price competition: an efficiency effect and a strategic effect. The efficiency effect arises when firms …

Exit, Voice, And Human Security: Serbs In Kosovo After Declaration Of Independence, Ekaterina Yazykova May 2012

Exit, Voice, And Human Security: Serbs In Kosovo After Declaration Of Independence, Ekaterina Yazykova

All Dissertations

This study examines emigration and political action as related phenomena in the context of the ethnic Serbian community in post-independence Kosovo. Albert O. Hirschman's (1970, 1993) work on exit and voice as two primary responses to decline in firms, organizations, and states provided the theoretical framework for the study. An attempt was made to integrate the individual context, assessed through the lens of human security, into the exit-voice framework. The study's hypotheses regarded relations between emigration as exit and political action as voice at different levels of human security. Rational-choice determinants of exit and voice, as well as loyalty to …

Glottal Excitation Extraction Of Voiced Speech - Jointly Parametric And Nonparametric Approaches, Yiqiao Chen May 2012

Glottal Excitation Extraction Of Voiced Speech - Jointly Parametric And Nonparametric Approaches, Yiqiao Chen

All Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to develop methods to recover glottal flow pulses, which contain biometrical information about the speaker. The excitation information estimated from an observed speech utterance is modeled as the source of an inverse problem.
Windowed linear prediction analysis and inverse filtering are first used to deconvolve the speech signal to obtain a rough estimate of glottal flow pulses. Linear prediction and its inverse filtering can largely eliminate the vocal-tract response which is usually modeled as infinite impulse response filter. Some remaining vocal-tract components that reside in the estimate after inverse filtering are next removed by …

Working 5 To 9, What A Way To Make A Livin'! An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Shift And Turnover, Christie Kelley May 2012

Working 5 To 9, What A Way To Make A Livin'! An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Shift And Turnover, Christie Kelley

All Dissertations

The current study investigated burnout and engagement as mediators of the relationship between shift work and both turnover and turnover intentions. Further, perceived organizational support (POS) and work schedule justice (WSJ) were hypothesized to moderate the relationship between shift and two outcomes: engagement and burnout. The Job Demands-Resource model was used as a theoretical framework for the current study (Schaufeli & Bakker, 2004). The current study utilized a longitudinal sample of nurses to test the hypotheses with structural equation modeling. Further, differences were assessed between all employees and only full-time employees. Contrary to hypotheses, shift was not related to burnout …

Serious Tourism And Consumer Preference For Sustainable Tourism Certifications, Richard Lacher May 2012

Serious Tourism And Consumer Preference For Sustainable Tourism Certifications, Richard Lacher

All Dissertations

Demand for sustainability oriented vacation options is on the rise as consumers become more aware of the negative effects that their travel may have on various destinations. Certifying tourism businesses as sustainable (much in the way organic food or fair trade coffee is certified) has been proposed as a means to ensure that ecotourism operations actually follow the principles of sustainable development. This study uses a serious tourism framework and a stated preference choice modeling approach to evaluate consumers' preferences for different types of sustainable tourism certifications. Additionally, willingness to pay (WTP) for different types for certifications is important so …

In the attempts to understand the best strategies to teach these skills, research during the past few decades has shown a steadily increasing interest in improving the scientific literacy of students in science and engineering disciplines. Researchers agree …

Ambiguous Science And The Visual Representation Of The Real, Curtis Newbold May 2012

Ambiguous Science And The Visual Representation Of The Real, Curtis Newbold

All Dissertations

The emergence of visual media as prominent and even expected forms of communication in nearly all disciplines, including those scientific, has raised new questions about how the art and science of communication epistemologically affect the interpretation of scientific phenomena. In this dissertation I explore how the influence of aesthetics in visual representations of science inevitably creates ambiguous meanings. As a means to improve visual literacy in the sciences, I call awareness to the ubiquity of visual ambiguity and its importance and relevance in scientific discourse. To do this, I conduct a literature review that spans interdisciplinary research in communication, science, …

The Development Of Freshman College Calculus Students' Mathematics Identity And How It Predicts Students' Career Choice, Jennifer Cribbs May 2012

The Development Of Freshman College Calculus Students' Mathematics Identity And How It Predicts Students' Career Choice, Jennifer Cribbs

All Dissertations

There is a need for research to explore the connections between students' self-perceptions and their goals and future engagement with mathematics. This is particularly the case when considering that student interest declines as they transition through K-12 and gender differences continue to persist in mathematics related careers. Knowing how students identify with mathematics might provide insight into students' self-perceptions of mathematics and how these perceptions relate to students' career choices.
This quantitative study uses a mathematics identity framework based upon students' self-perceptions related to mathematics. Specifically, students' self-perceptions relating to mathematics interest, recognition by others in mathematics, and mathematical competence …

The Strength Of Hispanic Adolescents' Level Of Ethnic Identification And Their Parents' Level Of Self-Differentiation And Ethnic Identification To Predict Second Generation Hispanic Adolescents' Level Of Self-Differentiation, Nizel Fernandez

All Dissertations

During adolescents individuals develop many lasting features of their identity (Erikson, 1950, Bowen, 1978, Phinney, 1992, 1996, 2005) including the development of self-differentiation and multi-group ethnic identification. Bowen's (1978) theory of differentiation of self and Phinney's (Phinney, 1992) theory of multi-group ethnic identification provided the theoretical and measurement bases for the study. The purpose of this study was to examine the strength of Hispanic adolescents' level of multi-group ethnic identification and their parents' level of self-differentiation and multi-group ethnic identification in predicting second generation Hispanic adolescents' level of self-differentiation. One hundred two (102) Hispanic adolescents, ages 13 to 18, and …

Bilingual Dual-Role Staff Interpreters In The Health Care Setting: Factors Associated With Passing A Language Competency Test, Lisa C. Diamond, Regina Otero-Sabogal May 2012

Bilingual Dual-Role Staff Interpreters In The Health Care Setting: Factors Associated With Passing A Language Competency Test, Lisa C. Diamond, Regina Otero-Sabogal

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Although using trained interpreters can improve care for patients with limited English proficiency, using untrained interpreters may impair it. Without a valid language skills test for interpreters, it is difficult for health care organizations to identify bilingual staff who can serve in a dual role as interpreters. We hypothesized that individuals born outside the U.S. with a higher education level and prior interpreting training and reporting high confidence in interpreting abilities would be more likely to pass a test to function as a dual-role interpreter. We surveyed and tested 387 dual-role interpreters in a large, integrated health care organization. There …

Intake Tests For A Short Interpreter-Training Course: Design, Implementation, Feedback, Jim Hlavac, Marc Orlando, Shani Tobias

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This article discusses features of an intake test for potential trainees for short, locally focused training in rural areas of Victoria, Australia. First, the design and choice of test components are discussed, with reference to the testing tools commonly employed in community interpreting training and in light of the fact that testers could not directly test proficiency skills in the language/s other than English (LOTE). The intake test itself elicited information such as level of motivation, knowledge of skills required of interpreters, and educational and occupational experience. Information elicited through the test provided a basis for diagnosis of testees’ linguistic …

Do You See What I See? Using Elan For Self-Analysis And Reflection, Della Goswell May 2012

Do You See What I See? Using Elan For Self-Analysis And Reflection, Della Goswell

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This commentary discusses the application of video annotation software (ELAN) in the Auslan–English interpreter-training program at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. It gives an overview of the program’s context and highlights experienced-based learning as one of the key pedagogical approaches being used to foster student self-analysis and reflection. In order for students to analyze their own interpreting performances, they must first be recorded, so the article touches on the rationale and some techniques for the video capture that provides the data for subsequent ELAN analysis. Examples of activities based on the use of ELAN software are then discussed.

Exploring Remote Interpreting, Erica Alley May 2012

Exploring Remote Interpreting, Erica Alley

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This article examines the field of remote interpretation in both signed and spoken languages. Remote interpreting is used throughout a range of specializations including medical, mental health, education, conference, and legal environments. Video interpreting is here to stay, despite obstacles that continue to pose a challenge; many who fight this technology do so against the natural paradigm shift that the field will take. I propose that rather than resist the expansion of technology, interpreter educators instead teach interpreters how to use it effectively. In this article I identify important topics for educators to address, to help interpreters make ethically wise …

Qualified Affordance-Based Design, Jun Hu May 2012

Qualified Affordance-Based Design, Jun Hu

All Theses

Function-based approaches are taught by the engineering design community and implemented in practice. The most significant advantage of these approaches is that they can guide the designers to abstract the essential problems from the design requirements, build the function-based models, and consequently provide the direction of the solution. However, due to the lack of a consistent scientific definition on the meaning of the function, these approaches may be contradictory when representing human-centered aspects, features, and non-physical purposes. To address this issue, design researchers have pursued two general directions: (1) broadening the meaning of function and (2) introducing an alternative scientific …

To Live, To Love, To Labor: Challenging The Rigidity Of The Public And Private Spheres, Mallory Neil May 2012

To Live, To Love, To Labor: Challenging The Rigidity Of The Public And Private Spheres, Mallory Neil

All Theses

JŸrgen Habermas's bourgeois public sphere theory led many historians to adopt new categories of social divisions. More specifically, gender historians utilized the theory in order to explain the exclusion of women from the political realm. Imparting male and female classifications onto the public and private spheres, in turn, led to the claim of complete social immobility for women. In the 1990s and 2000s, however, gender historians began to question the rigidity of the gendered spheres. This study adopts this line of argument by looking at the lives of Madame de Sta‘l, George Sand, and Lucie Aubrac. These women present three …

A Scandal In Britain: The Mary Anne Clarke Affair And Representations Of Gendered Patriotism, Parissa Djangi May 2012

A Scandal In Britain: The Mary Anne Clarke Affair And Representations Of Gendered Patriotism, Parissa Djangi

All Theses

In 1809, Mary Anne Clarke served as a key player in an investigation against her former lover, the Duke of York. She testified before the House of Commons that the Duke, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, did not provide her with enough financial support and allowed her to accept bribes for commissions in the army. Her confession rocked early nineteenth-century Britain, and the scandal caused the Duke to resign his military position. With Britain in the thick of the Napoleonic Wars, 1809 was a bad year for a scandal, as it encouraged Britons to doubt the authority of their military …

'The Garden Spot Of The Earth': A History & Historic Resources Survey Of Reevesville, South Carolina, Stefanie Marasco

All Theses

Reevesville, South Carolina, is a rural agrarian town within Dorchester County. It was established as a settlement in 1793, but it did not become an official town until it was first incorporated into Colleton County in 1875. The population of Reevesville has, since 1875, remained fairly consistent, averaging 150 to 250 inhabitants. Reevesville's most prosperous era extended from 1875 to 1930, years that coincide with the most active period of the South Carolina Railroads, which served the town in the late 19th century. Many of the extant historic buildings in the area date to this period.
This thesis compiles a …

The Yamuna River has religious significance in India. Its landscape evolved based on the cultural philosophies of Hindus and Islam. The current rapid urbanization in India affects the river, resulting in utilitarian drain. This study recognizes that extensive contamination is harmful for the physical and the cultural values along the river. Therefore, a new plan for the design and management of the river is needed. To create new sustainable model, qualitative and quantitative methods were used in the conservation of both the intangible and the tangible values in the region. The 105 surveys responses and interviews from the residents of …

'A Sane Sense Of Loyalty To Nation In Peace And War,' Military Education And Patriotism At Wofford College, 1917-45, Andrew Baker May 2012

'A Sane Sense Of Loyalty To Nation In Peace And War,' Military Education And Patriotism At Wofford College, 1917-45, Andrew Baker

All Theses

The Upper Piedmont of South Carolina is home to a disproportionate number of Army ROTC units and citations for heroism in battle. Within the region, the story of Spartanburg, South Carolina's Wofford College provides a unique perspective on the idea of a southern military tradition. In 1917, Wofford's president Henry Nelson Snyder proved an avid supporter of the American war effort. His support culminated in the formation of an ROTC detachment on Wofford's campus in 1919. After several tenuous early years, Wofford College's voluntary detachment's ranks were filled by the majority of the all-male student body. In competition, the detachment …

Unlocking Drayton Hall: A Survey And Analysis Of Hardware At A Southern Plantation, Lauren Elizabeth Golden May 2012

Unlocking Drayton Hall: A Survey And Analysis Of Hardware At A Southern Plantation, Lauren Elizabeth Golden

All Theses

No other single architectural element at Drayton Hall near Charleston, South Carolina better reflects the social and financial evolution of the house better than its hardware. When Drayton Hall was built, architectural hardware was in a period of transition, shifting from displaying hardware as a symbol of one's ability to purchase relatively expensive items to conceptualizing of rooms as holistic spaces where the hardware elements were as hidden as possible. Generations of family owners significantly changed the original, cohesive hierarchy of types ranging from the highly stylized to the simply functional, but much of the original remains. This thesis is …

Security And Performance Verification Of Distributed Authentication And Authorization Tools, Seok Bae Yun May 2012

Security And Performance Verification Of Distributed Authentication And Authorization Tools, Seok Bae Yun

All Theses

Parallel distributed systems are widely used for dealing with massive data sets and high performance computing. Securing parallel distributed systems is problematic. Centralized security tools are likely to cause bottlenecks and introduce a single point of failure. In this paper, we introduce existing distributed authentication and authorization tools. We evaluate the quality of the security tools by verifying their security and performance.
For security tool verification, we use process calculus and mathematical modeling languages. Casper, Communicating Sequential Process (CSP) and Failure Divergence Refinement (FDR) to test for security vulnerabilities, Petri nets and Karp Miller trees are used to find performance …

Student Perceptions And Use Of Multimodal And Traditional Forms Of Composition, Shawn Stowe May 2012

Student Perceptions And Use Of Multimodal And Traditional Forms Of Composition, Shawn Stowe

All Theses

Given the dynamic nature of technology and writing, it is important to understand how students view traditional and multimodal methods of composition. Traditional composition (plain text) is frequently used to complete essays, and multimodal composition (often digital, but otherwise containing multiple media elements) is often used to construct blogs and webpages. As technologies advance, there is more and more opportunity for the overlapping of composition and technology in writing practices. The objective of this study was to examine how students perceive traditional and multimodal composition in terms of their use, perceptions, and preferences. This study used surveys (quantitative) and interviews …

Slave Housing: In Search Of Endangered Architecture, Syra V. Valiente May 2012

Slave Housing: In Search Of Endangered Architecture, Syra V. Valiente

All Theses

Although enslaved Africans constituted a significant majority of the population of Charleston County, South Carolina, from the early eighteenth century until the Civil War, only miniscule number of former slave houses survive. Intense analysis of the surviving slave houses at McLeod Plantation on James Island raises questions about what inherent aspects of their plan and construction constitutes what this study labels 'slave architecture.' The emergence, development and decline of slave houses reflects the broader history of slavery in the South Carolina Lowcountry and suggests that improved documentation of these rare buildings can play an important role in conveying the history …
