Adaptation Of Chinese Graduate Students To The Academic Integrity Requirements Of A U.S. University: A Mixed Methods Research, Hu Jian

All Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed method study was to investigate how graduates originating from mainland China adapt to the U.S. academic integrity requirements. In the first, quantitative phase of the study, the research questions focused on understanding the state of academic integrity in China. This guiding question was divided into two sub-questions, academic misbehavior commonly practiced by students in China and factors leading to these types of misbehavior. The data were collected via a web-based survey (N=300) through convenience sampling. The results from the quantitative analysis displayed the commonly practiced academic misbehavior converge on four categories: a) cheating for benefits, …

The Influence Of Flagship Species On In Situ And Ex Situ Wildlife Tourists' Connection To Wildlife And Pro-Conservation Behaviors, Jeffrey Skibins Aug 2012

The Influence Of Flagship Species On In Situ And Ex Situ Wildlife Tourists' Connection To Wildlife And Pro-Conservation Behaviors, Jeffrey Skibins

All Dissertations

Annually, millions of tourists visit natural areas and zoos primarily to view flagship species such as lions and elephants. Venues rely on the inherent charisma of these species to increase visitation and anchor conservation efforts. Expected visitor outcomes from the use of flagships include raised levels of awareness and pro-conservation behaviors. However, the role of flagships in wildlife tourism has been criticized for not delivering conservation benefits for species of interest or biodiversity, and producing negative site impacts. Furthermore, little is known about how the connection to a species influences conservation behaviors. This dissertation addresses this gap in knowledge by …

Development And Characterization Of Shellac-Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose Composite Films With Acid Catalyst, Sana Asrar Aug 2012

Development And Characterization Of Shellac-Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose Composite Films With Acid Catalyst, Sana Asrar

All Theses

The objective of this research was to develop a shellac-hydroproyl methyl cellulose (Sh-HPMC) composite film with enhanced water vapor barrier. Citric acid (CA) was used as an acid catalyst, to promote miscibility between HPMC and shellac. In a preliminary test, three different concentrations of CA (1000:1, 200:1, 100:1) were tested to identify the best Sh:CA ratio. Based on the Water vapor permeability properties and mechanical properties, Sh-CA (1000:1 ratio) had the most enhanced water vapor barrier and the lowest reduction in tensile strength compared to the pure HPMC film (control). In the later part of the research, the effect of …

New Directions Of Play: Native American Origins Of Modern Lacrosse, Jeffrey Carey

All Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a history of lacrosse from the seventeenth century, when the game was played exclusively by Native Americans, to the early decades of the twentieth century, when the game began to flourish in non-Native settings in Canada and the United States. While the game was first developed by Native Americans well before contact with Europeans, lacrosse became standardized by a group of Canadians led by George Beers in 1867, and has continued to develop into the twenty-first century. The thesis aims to illuminate the historical linkages between the ball game that existed among …

Opportunities To Develop Programs And Engage Amish Youth In Safety Education, S Dee Jepsen, Joseph Donnermeyer Aug 2012

Opportunities To Develop Programs And Engage Amish Youth In Safety Education, S Dee Jepsen, Joseph Donnermeyer

Journal of Youth Development

Understanding and designing appropriate educational youth safety programs for the Amish requires an appreciation of their history, their distinctiveness in an American society built on economic, social and cultural change, and how the Amish themselves have changed over the years. The qualitative research study highlighted in this paper sought to determine culturally and age-appropriate curricula useful to community educators interested in youth safety programs for Amish and other conservative Anabaptist groups. Researchers identified rural safety topics of interest to Amish families to include lawn mowers, string trimmers, chemicals, water, livestock, confined spaces, tractors and skid loaders. Parents regularly involved children …

An Examination Of Predictive Factors Related To School Adjustment For Children With Disabilities Transitioning Into Formal School Settings, Cynthia Baughan Aug 2012

An Examination Of Predictive Factors Related To School Adjustment For Children With Disabilities Transitioning Into Formal School Settings, Cynthia Baughan

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
Data related to the adjustment to school of 86 children with disabilities who transitioned into formal school settings in the fall of 2011 were obtained through 31 parent surveys (Transition to School Parent Survey) and 64 teacher surveys (Transition to School Teacher Survey). Data from the subscales of these surveys were used to examine the predictive association between family preparation for the transition (as measured by parent satisfaction and parent involvement) and parent-rated child adjustment to school, and between receiving teacher support (as measured by teacher practices) and teacher-rated child adjustment to school. Findings from this study suggest that …

A Formative Experiment To Promote Disciplinary Literacy In Middle-School And Pre-Service Teacher Education Through Blogging, Jamie Colwell

All Dissertations

This dissertation describes a formative experiment that investigated how strategy instruction paired with collaborative blogging could promote disciplinary literacy among eighth-grade students in a social studies classroom and among pre-service teachers in a social studies methods course. Qualitative methods were utilized to collect and analyze data in this study. To determine modifications to the intervention, an embedded, single-case study was designed to analyze data iteratively using constant comparative methods. Post-study, qualitative methods were also used to conduct retrospective analysis to connect overall findings to theory. Three modifications were made, in the middle-school setting, to the intervention, which enhanced participants' progress …

Does Practice Make Perfect? Effects Of Practice And Coaching On Interview Performance, Katherine Williams Aug 2012

Does Practice Make Perfect? Effects Of Practice And Coaching On Interview Performance, Katherine Williams

All Dissertations

This study examined the incremental effectiveness of interview practice and feedback on candidates' interview performance. In addition, interviewee anxiety, impression management behaviors, and core self-evaluation were considered as intervening variables between the training manipulations and interview performance. In this experimental design, participants were assigned to one of three groups: the control group, the interview practice group, and the coaching group that received practice plus feedback from a counselor. Employer representatives evaluated subsequent interview performance within a final mock interview.
Hypotheses predicting differential effects of interview training on interview performance ratings were partially supported and relationships were discovered among additional variables. …

Inventing Laughter: Comedic Writing Practices And The Limits Of Pedagogical Power, Daniel Liddle Aug 2012

Inventing Laughter: Comedic Writing Practices And The Limits Of Pedagogical Power, Daniel Liddle

All Theses

This thesis conducts an examination of the writing methods used by stand-up comedians using the lens of the rhetorical canon of invention. The study applies the theories of Thomas Rickert, Diane Davis, Ann Berthoff, and Janice Lauer in order to define the relationship between humor and epistemology, and to consider how this comedic-epistemic perspective can inform pedagogical practices in the composition classroom. This study relies mainly on the rhetorical analysis of 'How To' books on writing comedy, the methodologies of schools of comedy, as well as biographies by/about comedians in order to discuss the relationship between comedians and their 'material.' …

What Makes A Font Persuasive?: An Eye-Tracking Study Of Perception In American And Chinese Assessment Of Fonts, Kimberly Sulak Aug 2012

What Makes A Font Persuasive?: An Eye-Tracking Study Of Perception In American And Chinese Assessment Of Fonts, Kimberly Sulak

All Theses

Professional, technical, and visual communication practitioners and academics have historically overlooked visual rhetoric and how it is employed in business communications as well as how various cultures comprehend and respond to the design elements and visual composition of business documents. More specifically typography, the building blocks of a document, has been little explored in professional and technical communication research. As such, this study utilizes eye-tracking technology in conjunction with other data collection methods to understand if and how fonts contribute to the persuasiveness of business communications and if different cultures vary in typeface assessment and perception.

Will The Real Miss Scarlett Please Stand Up: How The Life Of Mary Boykin Chesnut Can Be Considered A Model For Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett O'Hara, Anna Braunscheidel Aug 2012

Will The Real Miss Scarlett Please Stand Up: How The Life Of Mary Boykin Chesnut Can Be Considered A Model For Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett O'Hara, Anna Braunscheidel

All Theses

Scarlett O'Hara may well be one of the most well known Southern women of all time. Outside of the world of fiction, Mary Boykin Chesnut is probably the most famous woman of the Confederate era. There are striking similarities between both women, not only in terms of their experiences but also their reactions to these experiences, as well as their striking personalities. Because of these similarities, it is quite easy to draw parallels between the two women, and surprisingly, this subject, although it has been suggested, has not been explored in greater detail.

Supervision And The Interpreting Profession: Support And Accountabilitythrough Reflective Practice, Ali Hetherington May 2012

Supervision And The Interpreting Profession: Support And Accountabilitythrough Reflective Practice, Ali Hetherington

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In this article, the author argues for the development of consultative supervision within the interpreting profession to reduce work-related stress, provide interpreters with opportunities for regular examination of their practice, and to protect those to whom interpreters provide a service. Supervision is a recognized means of accountability and support for many professions, yet it is largely absent from the training and continuing professional development of interpreters. Furthermore, the absence of literature into occupational stress for interpreters implies that such stress is unrecognized or considered unproblematic by the profession. The author draws on findings from a recent qualitative research study into …

Broadcast Yourself: Youtube As A Tool For Interpreter Education, Tom R. Cox May 2012

Broadcast Yourself: Youtube As A Tool For Interpreter Education, Tom R. Cox

International Journal of Interpreter Education

YouTube is a website designed for the purpose of easily sharing videos and is extremely popular with today’s generation of “digital native” students. The technology is easily accessible, free, and relatively simple to use. However, its merits as an educational tool for interpreting seem to be widely underutilized even though it is ideally suited for working with a visual language. In the fall of 2009, I began experimenting with YouTube in my American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting classes. I have slowly incorporated many of YouTube’s useful features in my curriculum, enhancing my ability to provide pre-assignment information, interpreting models, and …

Thinking Through Ethics: The Processes Of Ethical Decisionmaking By Novice And Expert American Sign Language Interpreters, Elizabeth Mendoza May 2012

Thinking Through Ethics: The Processes Of Ethical Decisionmaking By Novice And Expert American Sign Language Interpreters, Elizabeth Mendoza

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In the course of their work, interpreters face ethical dilemmas that require prioritizing competing moral beliefs and views on professional practice. Although several decision-making models exist, little research has been done on how interpreters learn to identify and make ethical decisions. Through surveys and interviews on ethical decision making, the author investigated how expert and novice American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters discuss their ethical decision-making processes and prioritize prima facie duties, or meta-ethical principles (Ross, 1930/2002). The survey participants included 225 novice interpreters with 3 or fewer years of experience as nationally certified interpreters and 168 expert interpreters with 10 …
