An Engineering Psychology Based Analysis Of Ladder Setup Procedures, Alan Campbell
An Engineering Psychology Based Analysis Of Ladder Setup Procedures, Alan Campbell
All Theses
ABSTRACT
Accidents involving portable ladders are a common cause of serious occupational and non-occupational injuries throughout the industrialized world. Many of these injuries could be prevented with proper education, training and usage of portable ladders. This research focused on the human factors and engineering aspects of portable extension ladder usage. Results and analysis revealed evidence of unsafe acts that could lead to catastrophic ladder slide-out accidents in real-life situations. Six ladder setup methods were evaluated based on placement angles: the Basic, 75 Degree, Stand-Reach, L Sticker, 4:1, and Level methods. The level method produced the most accurate results with the …
Measuring Legal Fictions: Law And Sovereignty In Measure For Measure, James Funk
Measuring Legal Fictions: Law And Sovereignty In Measure For Measure, James Funk
All Theses
In this paper I argue that Shakespeare's Measure for Measure interrogates the performativity inherent in the exercise of law and sovereignty, ultimately revealing that internal contradictions within the early modern political system create the possibility for change. At the level of plot, the substitution of Angelo for the supposedly absent Duke highlights the impossibility of the law's attempt to personify justice. The same issue reveals itself in how one reads the text; there are two ways, for example, to interpret the Duke's declaration near the end of the play that there is 'more behind that is more gratulate': the temporally …
Stolen Souls, Emily Kudeviz
Stolen Souls, Emily Kudeviz
All Theses
This creative thesis is concerned with the exploration of the stages of grief. 'Stolen Souls' utilizes the popular speculative fantasy genre, mixing fantasy monsters with reality to allow the main character a safe way to deal with the grief she faces in her life. 'Stole Souls' borrows Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's theories of denial and acceptance while at the same time drawing from the various models of the fantasy genre.

The Cinematic Essay: Argumenative Writing And Documentary Film, Zachary Snow
The Cinematic Essay: Argumenative Writing And Documentary Film, Zachary Snow
All Theses
The cinematic essay, also known as the essay film, is an extension of the documentary genre which replaces the impossible task of objectivity with a more subjective, argumentative approach. The existence of this form arguably dates back to the birth of the documentary, but certainly encompasses more recent endeavors like Errol Morris' investigative work, the experimental features of Chris Marker, and the political exposes of Michael Moore. Until the recent growth in digital technology, which has decreased the financial burden associated with the cost of film stock and other aspects of production, essayistic cinema was mostly created by professional filmmakers, …
The Degree Of Peer Influences On Children's Food Choices At Summer Camp, Erin O'Neill
The Degree Of Peer Influences On Children's Food Choices At Summer Camp, Erin O'Neill
All Theses
Research has shown that peers influence each other in social situations. With childhood obesity becoming more prevalent in society, studying the influence peers have on their friends eating behaviors is important. National campaigns and laws have been promoted for the changing of food standards in schools but not recreation programs. Through direct observations of the foods children choose while amongst friends, the degree to which peers influence other children during a mealtime setting at camp is analyzed. When conducting research to test whether peers influenced children's food choices, noting the societal reasons and atmospheres in which children choose meals with …
Players' Performance Index For Major League Soccer, Joel Correll
Players' Performance Index For Major League Soccer, Joel Correll
All Theses
This paper analyzes player compensation and team finances within Major League Soccer's 2007 season by calculating salaries with respect to the player's marginal revenue product and performance parameters. The player's performance index is a calculated overall value which takes into account variations of weighted in-game actions. This performance index is tied together with a player's marginal revenue product to determine their actual economic value with respect to their 2007 rating. The paper concludes that on average, Major League Soccer as a whole compensates players based on the team's marginal revenue product, and not the individuals. The study also finds clear …
A System-Generated Password And Mnemonic Approach To Optimize The Security And Usability Of Text-Based Passwords, Sanjaykumar Ranganayakulu
A System-Generated Password And Mnemonic Approach To Optimize The Security And Usability Of Text-Based Passwords, Sanjaykumar Ranganayakulu
All Theses
In this study a novel password generation policy called the system-generated password and mnemonic was designed and implemented. The intent of this policy was to optimize both the security and usability of text-based passwords. After implementing the policy we evaluated its usability and compared it with three other existing policies: user-generated password, system-generated password and user-generated mnemonic for a system-generated password. In order to have a fair comparison among the policies we maintained a constant level of security of 30±2 entropy as dictated by NIST level 2 standards.
The study involved 64 participants, equally divided into four groups, 16 in …
Paradise Found: Religiosity And Reform In Oberlin, Ohio, 1833-1859, Matthew Hintz
Paradise Found: Religiosity And Reform In Oberlin, Ohio, 1833-1859, Matthew Hintz
All Theses
Founded as a quasi-utopian society by New England evangelists, Oberlin became the central hub of extreme social reform in Ohio's Western Reserve. Scholars have looked at Oberlin from political and cultural perspectives, but have placed little emphasis on religion. That is to say, although religion is a major highlight of secondary scholarship, few have placed the community appropriately in the dynamic of the East and West social reform movement. Historians have often ignored, or glossed over this important element and how it represented the divergence between traditional orthodoxy in New England and Middle-Atlantic states, and the new religious hybrids found …
Ties That Bind: The Emergence Of Iron Tie Rod Reinforcement In Load Bearing Masonry Buildings Of Charleston, S.C., Jamie Lynn Wiedman
Ties That Bind: The Emergence Of Iron Tie Rod Reinforcement In Load Bearing Masonry Buildings Of Charleston, S.C., Jamie Lynn Wiedman
All Theses
Comprehensive studies of structural tie rods in Charleston's load bearing masonry buildings are scarce. While the presence of these anchors on building facades fascinates passersby and is appreciated throughout the city, a general knowledge of their history and emergence as a technology is lacking. Often associated with the earthquake of 1886, iron tie rods were in fact present in Charleston buildings as early as the 18th century. And while the effect of the 1886 earthquake on Charleston's built environment is typically looked at from a sociological or political perspective, and the physical effect has been studied extensively, rarely has the …
Residents' Interaction With Their College Living-Learning Peer Mentor: A Grounded Theory, Jonathan Wylie
Residents' Interaction With Their College Living-Learning Peer Mentor: A Grounded Theory, Jonathan Wylie
All Dissertations
This study used Strauss and Corbin's (1998) grounded theory model to describe and explain the stories of residents' interactions with their peer mentor, in a health, education, and human development living-learning community (LLC). The question answered in this study was: What is the impact of the interaction between a peer mentor and residents within a living-learning community? Two sub-questions were asked: (1) How does the peer mentor affect the living-learning community members academically? and (2) How does the peer mentor affect the living-learning community members socially?
The LLC had 43 residents, a resident director, an academic coordinator, and one peer …
Hybrid Query Expansion On Ontology Graph In Biomedical Information Retrieval, Liang Dong
Hybrid Query Expansion On Ontology Graph In Biomedical Information Retrieval, Liang Dong
All Dissertations
Nowadays, biomedical researchers publish thousands of papers and journals every day. Searching through biomedical literature to keep up with the state of the art is a task of increasing difficulty for many individual researchers. The continuously increasing amount of biomedical text data has resulted in high demands for an efficient and effective biomedical information retrieval (BIR) system. Though many existing information retrieval techniques can be directly applied in BIR, BIR distinguishes itself in the extensive use of biomedical terms and abbreviations which present high ambiguity.
First of all, we studied a fundamental yet simpler problem of word semantic similarity. We …

Cultural Sustainability Of A Post-Industrial Brownfield In Wanzhou China: Maintaining Cultural Value Through Brownfield Redevelopment, Yi Zhang
All Theses
The post-industrial brownfield, generally regarded as one type of brownfield, is defined as an industrial property that remains abandoned or underutilized in part because of environmental contamination. In China, more and more post-industrial sites are abandoned because of changes to city land use, often becoming an obstacle for healthy city growth. This phenomenon places more concerns on brownfield redevelopment in China. Chinese professionals in landscape architecture can borrow some methods and techniques for addressing brownfields from more developed countries. While the brownfields in China share some similar characteristics with those in developed countries, they also have some specific features. For …
When Time Stops, Andrew Mathas
When Time Stops, Andrew Mathas
All Theses
This creative thesis is a collection of three short stories centered on exploring modern war and military life in Afghanistan. This collection engages in questions of truth, death, and what it means to live on the fringe of a modern warzone. War is a test of the human condition on both soldiers and civilians, the results of which are often impossible to comprehend. In examining that kind of an environment, I am giving voice to stories often forgotten or overlooked during war — stories that need to be heard if we are to have any hope of understanding our actions …

Wilde Monsters: The Creation Of Aesthete Criminals, Robyn Miller
Wilde Monsters: The Creation Of Aesthete Criminals, Robyn Miller
All Theses
In the preface to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde remarks that 'it is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors' (2). Wilde complicates this mirroring in his novel, for Dorian's portrait reflects its subject through its decay. Furthermore, Dorian also reflects the painting through his immortality. In such state, Dorian, his crimes, and his art become unified. The idea that art reflects its spectators, however, hardly ends with Dorian. Both Wilde's novel and his short story 'Lord Arthur Savile's Crime' prove reflective of the Victorian society and their fascination with both art and crime. More …
Detroit's Field Of Dreams: The Grassroots Preservation Of Tiger Stadium, Rebecca M. Long
Detroit's Field Of Dreams: The Grassroots Preservation Of Tiger Stadium, Rebecca M. Long
All Theses
From 1987 until the time of this writing, several grassroots organizations have fought for the preservation of Detroit's Tiger Stadium and its historic field. The goal of this thesis is to chronicle those efforts, examine how these organizations fit into the history of preservation movements, and delve into what continues to draw people to this historic site: its `power of place.' In order to accomplish these objectives, this thesis will detail the history of the site from its storied time as the home of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers from 1896-1999, up to the preservation efforts which have been the …
Dendrochronology: A Status Report For The Eastern United States, Elyse Harvey
Dendrochronology: A Status Report For The Eastern United States, Elyse Harvey
All Theses
Architectural historians and historic preservation practitioners have turned with increasing frequency to dendrochronology to determine dates of construction for houses and other timber structures for which the application of traditional dating techniques, chief among them historical documentation and stylistic analysis, failed. Since the advent of modern, statistically-driven tree-ring dating, analysis of the application of dendrochronology on the eastern region of the United States reveals that the use of this scientific technique has been unevenly applied and is most often used in New England and the Chesapeake. While the techniques used by American dendrochronologists are generally similar, practitioners have failed to …
How Leadership Can Influence Well-Being: The Roles Of Leader-Member Exchange And Social Support, Crystal Burnette
How Leadership Can Influence Well-Being: The Roles Of Leader-Member Exchange And Social Support, Crystal Burnette
All Theses
The present study examined how leadership can influence the impact of job demands on well-being by facilitating the development of known moderators of this relationship, such as social support. Direct and moderated relationships were proposed between job demands, leader-member exchange (LMX), supervisor social support, psychological well-being and emotional exhaustion. Data were collected from high-skilled employees and managers in a manufacturing plant in the People's Republic of China. Surveys were administered in two waves, allowing longitudinal relationships to be tested. As hypothesized, high-quality LMX relationships facilitated supervisor social support. Also as expected, supervisor social support had a direct positive relationship with …
