Construction Degree Graduates: An Evaluation Of Depth Of Skill Understanding And Skill Priority By Construction Industry Professionals, Ben F. Bigelow, Edelmiro Escamilla, Lauren Kuecker Sep 2015

Construction Degree Graduates: An Evaluation Of Depth Of Skill Understanding And Skill Priority By Construction Industry Professionals, Ben F. Bigelow, Edelmiro Escamilla, Lauren Kuecker

The Professional Constructor

Previous studies have been conducted to determine the skills the construction industry expects graduates and entry level professionals to possess. The majority of those studies report soft skills and technical expertise as the main qualities graduates should have upon entering the industry. Many differing skills have been reported, but neither the expected depth of understanding in those skills nor the industry’s priority of those skills have been explored. To do so, a survey was administered to members of the Construction Industry Advisory Council at Texas A&M University asking these questions. Depth of understanding was evaluated on a four level basis …

Lessons Learned: Collaborative Symbiosis And Responsive Disciplinary Literacy Teaching, Phillip Wilder, Danielle Herro Aug 2015

Lessons Learned: Collaborative Symbiosis And Responsive Disciplinary Literacy Teaching, Phillip Wilder, Danielle Herro

Publications

This paper describes a case study of how a middle school literacy coach and a science teacher attempted to improve disciplinary literacy teaching in a sixth-grade science class. The collaborative inquiry exposed the disciplinary knowledge gap of the literacy coach (a former language arts teacher) and the science teacher's limited knowledge of literacy instruction. These shared disciplinary knowledge gaps necessitated the co-construction of collaborative practices to ameliorate the tension and improve disciplinary literacy instruction. Through a recognition of individual knowledge and the use of responsive disciplinary teaching, the participants created collaborative symbiosis. To improve disciplinary literacy teaching, schools should recognize …

Prisoners In War: Zoos And Zoo Animals During Human Conflict 1870-1947, Clelly Johnson Aug 2015

Prisoners In War: Zoos And Zoo Animals During Human Conflict 1870-1947, Clelly Johnson

All Theses

Animals are sentient beings capable of many of the same feelings experienced by humans. They mourn a loss, they feel love and loyalty, and they experience fear. During wars and conflicts, fear is a prevailing emotion among humans, who worry for their well-being. Animals, too, feel fear during human conflicts, and that fear is magnified when those animals are caged. History has shown the victimization of zoo animals during military conflicts. Zoo animals already lack agency over their own lives, and in times of war, they are seen as a liability. From the Siege of Paris to recent Israel-Hamas conflicts …

Comparison Gmm And Svm Classifier For Automatic Speaker Verification, Shamama Afnan Aug 2015

Comparison Gmm And Svm Classifier For Automatic Speaker Verification, Shamama Afnan

All Theses

The objective of this thesis is to develop automatic text-independent speaker verification systems using unconstrained telephone conversational speech. We began by performing a Gaussian Mixture Model Likelihood ratio verification task in speaker independent system as described by MIT Lincoln Lab. We next introduced a speaker dependent verification system based on speaker dependent thresholds. We then implemented the same system applying Support Vector Machine. In SVM, we used polynomial kernels and radial basis function kernels and compared the performance. For training and testing the system, we used low-level spectral features. Finally, we provided a performance assessment of these systems using the …

The Cold Driver: Driving Performance Under Thermal Stress, Drew Morris Aug 2015

The Cold Driver: Driving Performance Under Thermal Stress, Drew Morris

All Theses

Exposure to cold environments can impact complex task performance and increase cognitive and physiological error in response to thermal stress. Critically, the task of driving a vehicle requires the use of calibrated mental and physical actions to be conducted safely without error. Few studies have examined the effects of cold stress on driving performance and none have explored the potential for advanced driver safety systems to detect error. Active vehicle safety systems which monitor dangerous driving behavior due to drowsiness have been researched and developed, though technology associated with thermal stressed driving error is unexplored. The current study examined the …

A Systems Approach For Selection Between Manual And Automated Work Zones Within Assembly Lines, Jayavardhan Dhulia Aug 2015

A Systems Approach For Selection Between Manual And Automated Work Zones Within Assembly Lines, Jayavardhan Dhulia

All Theses

Manufacturing firms are continuously looking forward to improve and optimize their processes to meet the requirements of mass production and product customization. In order to meet these demands, the operations on the assembly line need to be allocated with the right level of automation, such that neither the human nor the machine is underutilized With such an emphasis being put on assembly operations within manufacturing enterprises, there is a need for a systematic procedure that helps in identifying appropriate levels of automation (LoA) within different resolutions, such as at the workstation, and the band scales. Based on a literature review, …
