Income Inequality, Rapidly Rising Housing Prices And Overdevelopment Of Houses In China, Tao Guan May 2017

Income Inequality, Rapidly Rising Housing Prices And Overdevelopment Of Houses In China, Tao Guan

All Dissertations

Four phenomena can be observed in China's housing in the past 16 years: First, the vacancy rate of new condominium properties has increased significantly. Second, housing prices have been increasing very rapidly. In fact, the prices have rarely decreased even when strict housing policies are mandated. Third, housing transactions are active, as indicated by the new condominiums that are sold very quickly. Four, new construction activities are also very active. Phenomena 2, 3, and 4 are inherently consistent, but the coexistence of phenomena 2, 3, and 4 with phenomenon 1 is very perplexing. Thus, the following research questions can be …

Precarious Work, Invisible People, Unjust Livelihoods: A Social Ecological Model Of Migrant Farmworker Health In The Midwest, Athena K. Ramos May 2017

Precarious Work, Invisible People, Unjust Livelihoods: A Social Ecological Model Of Migrant Farmworker Health In The Midwest, Athena K. Ramos

All Dissertations

With precarious work, invisible social status, and a livelihood that is unjust, migrant farmworkers in the United States continue to be the hands that pick the nation's fruits and vegetables, the feet that walk the fields, and the bodies that make modern U.S. production agriculture work. The 2016 Nebraska Migrant Farmworker Health Study described demographic, occupational, health, and social characteristics; assessed safety climate and personal protective equipment provision; tested the Social Ecological Model of Migrant Farmworker Health; and tested the Demand-Control paradigm. The study used a cross-sectional design, consisting of a convenience sample of 241 migrant farmworkers in Nebraska. Correlations …

Evaluating Effects Of Construction-Related Land Use Change On Streamflow And Water Quality, Vijay Phanidhar Santikari May 2017

Evaluating Effects Of Construction-Related Land Use Change On Streamflow And Water Quality, Vijay Phanidhar Santikari

All Dissertations

Sediment runoff from construction sites is a major cause of impairment of surface water bodies, and the restoration efforts cost billions of dollars annually in the USA. This may be because Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to control water quantity and quality are improperly implemented, or the safety limits imposed by regulations are inadequate. To assess the collective effectiveness of BMPs, three small watersheds that underwent various degrees of urban development, and a fourth undeveloped reference watershed were monitored in South Carolina, USA. The primary objective of the study was to characterize changes in flow and sediment output with development, …

A Study Of How Different Incentive Systems Can Impact Criminal Defense, Benjamin Schwall May 2017

A Study Of How Different Incentive Systems Can Impact Criminal Defense, Benjamin Schwall

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines how different payment methods affect the behavior of criminal defense attorneys. In particular, I study the impact of switching from an hourly rate to a flat fee affects attorney behaviors across several measures. In my first paper, I begin by looking at how the switch affects the number of hours being reported. I identify the casual effect of switching from an hourly wage to a flat fee by exploiting a policy change that the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense instituted for private attorneys who handle indigent defense cases. I find that defense attorneys report 48\% less …

Ambient Hues And Audible Cues: An Approach To Automotive User Interface Design Using Multi-Modal Feedback, Joshua Ime Asukwo Ekandem May 2017

Ambient Hues And Audible Cues: An Approach To Automotive User Interface Design Using Multi-Modal Feedback, Joshua Ime Asukwo Ekandem

All Dissertations

The use of touchscreen interfaces for in-vehicle information, entertainment, and for the control of comfort settings is proliferating. Moreover, using these interfaces requires the same visual and manual resources needed for safe driving. Guided by much of the prevalent research in the areas of the human visual system, attention, and multimodal redundancy the Hues and Cues design paradigm was developed to make touchscreen automotive user interfaces more suitable to use while driving. This paradigm was applied to a prototype of an automotive user interface and evaluated with respects to driver performance using the dual-task, Lane Change Test (LCT). Each level …

Using Reflective Practice To Facilitate Conversations And Transform Instructional Practice For Middle School Science Teachers, Robbie L. Higdon May 2017

Using Reflective Practice To Facilitate Conversations And Transform Instructional Practice For Middle School Science Teachers, Robbie L. Higdon

All Dissertations

The process of teaching, especially inquiry, is complex and requires extended time for developing one's instructional practice (Loucks-Horsley, Stiles, Mundry, Love, & Hewson, 2010). The implementation of a continued cycle of self-reflection can engage teachers in analyzing their prior experiences and understandings about their instructional practice to promote the accommodation of new concepts and transform their practice. However, many teachers have difficulty engaging in the cognitive dissonance needed to identify those problems and promote their own growth without support. As one's professional practice becomes more repetitive and routine, it is difficult for the practitioner to recognize opportunities in which to …

Adhd Medication On Child Welfare, Leah Kitashima May 2017

Adhd Medication On Child Welfare, Leah Kitashima

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines the causal effects of ADHD medication on child welfare, and investigates the effects of a supplemental income program on the diagnoses of learning disabilities. In 2011, 6.4 million children were diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with nearly 70% of them taking ADHD medication. However, little causal evidence exists on the effectiveness of ADHD medication. The first two chapters of this dissertation utilize an instrumental variable strategy to identify the effects of ADHD pharmaceutical treatment on South Carolina Medicaid children's academic, behavioral, and health outcomes. The first chapter estimates the causal effects of ADHD medication on South Carolina …

Landscape Manipulatives: A Study Of Math Gardens And Learning Outcomes In Middle School Mathematics Education Research, Yang Song May 2017

Landscape Manipulatives: A Study Of Math Gardens And Learning Outcomes In Middle School Mathematics Education Research, Yang Song

All Dissertations

Human beings, especially children, need natural environments and outdoor play for their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being (Louv, 2008). Even though parents and teachers recognize the value of outdoor play, schoolchildren spend a diminishing amount of time engaging in outdoor activities (Clements, 2004). Furthermore, addressing strict state learning standards is the first priority for schools. Outdoor activities are often seen as extracurricular to those subjects typically emphasized and tested. As a result, outdoor landscapes such as science gardens, playgrounds, and experiential classrooms are often underutilized, discouraged since they can take away from more important, standard forms of pedagogy. Thus, traditional …

Exploring School-Level Factors Associated With Student Participation In The National School Lunch Program, Jermaine Jacob Shaw May 2017

Exploring School-Level Factors Associated With Student Participation In The National School Lunch Program, Jermaine Jacob Shaw

All Dissertations

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has provided nutritious lunches to children since its establishment in 1946. The program has undergone several regulatory changes, but none have been more significant than the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA). The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between select school foodservice operational factors and student participation in the NSLP since the implementation of the HHFKA. The objective of the study was to explore relationships between school foodservice operational factors and student participation in the NSLP by collecting, and then analyzing, operational data from 1,278 public school foodservice operations …

Abducted By Reading Machines: Pragmatism And The Discourse Of Distant Reading, Matthew Scott Duncan May 2017

Abducted By Reading Machines: Pragmatism And The Discourse Of Distant Reading, Matthew Scott Duncan

All Theses

This project begins with an investigation of a case study in literary analysis that attempts to bring together close and distant reading techniques to enhance the output of both methods. The investigation reveals not only a breakdown in the attempted corroboration of truth claims and evidence across methods, but a tension felt more broadly in the discourse surrounding distant reading as a methodological and disciplinary position. In response to this problematic, I access C.S. Peirce and John Dewey to construct an argument for a pragmatic model for mediating between the more traditional methods employed in literary studies and the computational …

Exploring Tourism Opportunities Through Homestay/Homeshare, Angela Galbreath May 2017

Exploring Tourism Opportunities Through Homestay/Homeshare, Angela Galbreath

All Theses

The purpose of this research employing an emergent design is to explore the experiences of micro-hospitality entrepreneurs as hosts of Airbnb properties. Specifically, this study focuses on hosts in two communities- Port-au-Prince and Jacmel "“ and whether the phenomenon of homesharing through Airbnb is contributing to community development as other homestay programs traditionally attempt to do. As such this study asks the questions: RQ1: What is the experience of an Airbnb host in Haiti? RQ2: How do the experiences of Airbnb hosts differ between the locations of Jacmel and Port-au-Prince? RQ3: How does homesharing through Airbnb in Haiti contribute (if …

Choices Of Contention: Decision Making Factors Leading To The Substitute Method Over In-Kind Repairs And Their Effectiveness At Lyndhurst Estate, Kirsten Anne Freeman May 2017

Choices Of Contention: Decision Making Factors Leading To The Substitute Method Over In-Kind Repairs And Their Effectiveness At Lyndhurst Estate, Kirsten Anne Freeman

All Theses

Lyndhurst Mansion, located in Tarrytown, New York is a masterpiece of American Gothic Revival architecture designed by Alexander Jackson Davis beginning in 1838. Since its acquisition by the National Trust in 1961, the property has carried out a number of repairs to the mansion and other buildings on the estate in which a substitute material was chosen over an in-kind material. Financial constraints appear to be the driving force behind these decisions. Other factors, durability of materials and preservation philosophy, also played a role. An aim of this thesis is to determine the role these factors played in choosing methods …

A Shared Resilience In Contemporary Southern Literature: Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out Of Carolina And Robin Boylorn's Sweetwater: Black Women And Tales Of Resilience, Laurie Pfister Epps May 2017

A Shared Resilience In Contemporary Southern Literature: Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out Of Carolina And Robin Boylorn's Sweetwater: Black Women And Tales Of Resilience, Laurie Pfister Epps

All Theses

As literary scholars, Southern Literature as we know it today needs to be all-inclusive of its people - all genders and all races. The South offers a most unique blend of colorful people that share a deep scar of a past full of injustices; however, it is through the richness in women writers' descriptions of the South and phenomenal characters with very realistic lives and circumstances that we can recognize many similarities of resilience and struggles with that identity and its daily attributes. In exploring the idea of a intercultural or intersection of Southern women and their lives, I want …

Catching A Breeze: A Study Of Piazzas In Charleston, Sc, Alena Coral Franco May 2017

Catching A Breeze: A Study Of Piazzas In Charleston, Sc, Alena Coral Franco

All Theses

Recent academic discussions have prompted a reexamination of Charleston, South Carolina's historic architecture. While Charleston is lauded for its impressive inventory of intact historic buildings, little is known about the development and variation within its urban house types, including iconic single house form. Piazzas, traditionally places of sheltered repose, are building elements historically associated with Charleston's single house. Integral to the urban fabric, piazzas have long served as iconic symbols of the city. This thesis presents the results of the first comprehensive survey analysis of Charleston's piazzas, identifying more than 2,000 of them in the neighborhoods south of the Septima …

This study examines the effects of participation in study abroad on undergraduate students' engagement with racial and religious diversity to identify outcomes and patterns that support the prominent goals in higher education of promoting global learning and enhancing inclusion and diversity on university campuses. Based on the framework of intergroup contact theory, I use hierarchical regression models to analyze data from the National Survey of Student Engagement collected at Clemson University in 2013 and 2015. Among undergraduate seniors, participation in study abroad is significantly associated with greater engagement with topics related to racial and religious diversity, and engagement with diverse …

Effective Celebrity Endorsers: What Are The Rhetorical Factors?, Christa Kettlewell May 2017

Effective Celebrity Endorsers: What Are The Rhetorical Factors?, Christa Kettlewell

All Theses

Celebrity endorsements are a common technique used in advertising. While many have studied this marketing tool and its effectiveness, a gap remains in the research regarding overall effectiveness in celebrity choice and advertisement composition in terms of rhetoric. Oftentimes, there is an assumption that celebrity endorsers hold the most power in creating purchase intentions, yet concepts related to rhetoric suggest that other elements play an active role in this as well. Consequently, this study adds to the conversation of celebrity endorsements by examining five beauty advertisements that utilize celebrity endorsements to better understand their overall visual rhetoric and, thus, how …

A Case Study On Part Engineering Change Management From A Development And Production Perspective At A Major Automotive Oem, Stephan Andreas Knackstedt

All Theses

Due to interest in aspects such as process, strategies, tools of engineering changes expressed in a literature review, two case studies were done on a major automotive OEM to assess the perceived quality of its engineering change management system and process through its employees' eyes. A combination of interviews and written surveys was used to capture the views of participants from all major functions found at the research and development (R&D) headquarters of the OEM: Purchasing, Production, Development, and one group consisting of all other functions ("Other"). This research filled a gap that was found in the literature review: No …

Tropical Dry Forest Leaf Composition And Hyperspectral Reflectance, Axel J. Acevedo Morales May 2017

Tropical Dry Forest Leaf Composition And Hyperspectral Reflectance, Axel J. Acevedo Morales

All Theses

The use of hyperspectral imagers provides the capability to obtain quantitative and qualitative information on vegetation by remotely collecting reflectance over broad ranges of the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum. Reflectances are determined by the chemical composition and three-dimensional structure of leaves. However, the success of this approach depends on our ability to understand how factors affecting trees influences our ability to interpret reflectance data. The primary objectives of this study were to: 1) Understand the relationship between specific leaf constituents and spectral reflectance patterns of trees in a tropical dry forest, and 2) understand the effects that seasonality has on …

Marked: Masculine Performativity In Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club And Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, Robert Brian Brissey Jr. May 2017

Marked: Masculine Performativity In Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club And Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, Robert Brian Brissey Jr.

All Theses

This paper analyzes the qualities and behaviors of white, heteronormative masculine performance in America, using Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club and Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho as exemplar literary portrayals and departures from such identity constructions. American masculinity, in its heteronormative white formulation, is treated within the majority of cultural productions in America as a "universal" identity, and as such, it is largely invisible in terms of cultural criticism. Both Fight Club and American Psycho are present as artifacts typifying the frustration of masculine identity reconciliation, with the intention of demonstrating a willingness of embracing non-prescriptive identity construction. Building off of …

Investigating Tactile Displays To Support Anesthesia Providers In The Operating Room, Scott Michael Betza May 2017

Investigating Tactile Displays To Support Anesthesia Providers In The Operating Room, Scott Michael Betza

All Theses

There has been a growing interest in using the tactile modality to offload the often overburdened visual and auditory channels. Although the promise and merit of using the tactile channel has been demonstrated in various work domains, more work is needed to understand perceptual limitations like change blindness. Change blindness refers to the failure in detecting expected visual changes (both small and large) within a scene or on a display when these changes coincide with a visual "transient" (i.e., a brief disruption in visual continuity). While the majority of work on change blindness has been conducted with vision, there is …

The Role Of Selected Social Media Platforms In Travel To Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Ugand, Ingrid Nyonza Nyakabwa May 2017

The Role Of Selected Social Media Platforms In Travel To Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Ugand, Ingrid Nyonza Nyakabwa

All Theses

In recent years, numerous sources of social media have increasingly played an important role in tourism marketing, and have had a profound effect on Destination Management Organisations' ability to effectively promote their destinations. With the emergence of more social media platforms, there are more tourism stakeholders recognising the increased importance to access information for tourists related to their destinations of interest. For example, tourist destination managers use Social media to provide information about their travel and tour packages, specific tourist attractions, accommodation costs, guiding services, and all other travel related information. Tourists use social media in their planning process to …

"Somewhere Toward Freedom:" Sherman's March And Georgia's Refugee Slaves, Ben Parten May 2017

"Somewhere Toward Freedom:" Sherman's March And Georgia's Refugee Slaves, Ben Parten

All Theses

When General William T. Sherman's army marched through Georgia during the American Civil War, it did not travel alone. As many as 17,000 refugee slaves followed his army to the coast; as many, if not more, fled to the army but decided to stay on their plantations rather than march on. This study seeks to understand Sherman's march from their point of view. It argues that through their refugee experiences, Georgia's refugee slaves transformed the march into one for their own freedom and citizenship. Such a transformation would not be easy. Not only did the refugees have to brave the …

"This Was Locker Room Talk": A Content Analysis On The Preservation And Policing Of Rape Culture On Twitter, Allison M. Sheets

All Theses

On October 9, 2016 during the second presidential debate, Donald Trump was asked by debate moderators to respond to a recently released audio recording in which Trump can be heard boasting about grabbing women without their consent. The term "locker room talk" was used by Trump to justify the discourse overheard in the tape. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the way in which registered Twitter users interpret and react to the use of the term "locker room talk" in relation to nonconsensual sexual activities. Using a sample size of 3,280 tweets, this content analysis draws upon …

Assets To The Country: Countesses In Fourteenth Century England, Janine Honey Sutter May 2017

Assets To The Country: Countesses In Fourteenth Century England, Janine Honey Sutter

All Theses

This thesis is a study of the lives of English Countesses in the fourteenth century. Past historians have often overlooked the role of females in society. When they were mentioned, it was in connection with their male counterpart ('his wife') or in a role that was non-traditional. Their day-to-day lives and their importance in their world have not been studied and compiled in one place. Surviving sources can tell us much about medieval noblewomen, even if many earlier historians ignored them. We learn that these women were strong and intelligent, and can answer questions about their childhoods, their abilities to …
