Using Propositional Analysis To Assess Interpreting Quality, Yan Lydia Ding
Using Propositional Analysis To Assess Interpreting Quality, Yan Lydia Ding
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This article compares two methods of assessing interpreting quality: the holistic method and the proposed propositional analysis method. The author first summarizes previous research on interpreting quality, from which quality criteria were selected for holistic assessment. Following that, Turner and Greene’s (1978) proposition guideline is briefly introduced as a basis for propositional analysis. Third-year interpreting students were assigned an in-class interpreting task, and their interpreting outputs were recorded, transcribed, and assessed using both methods. Results showed that the two assessment methods agreed with each other in general; however, the propositional analysis method had a few advantages over the holistic assessment …

‘Look-At-Me’ Versus ‘Look-At-This’: Signed Language Interpreters’Perceptions Of Promotion On Facebook, Brett A. Best
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This article reports on a study exploring signed language interpreters’ perceptions of promotion on Facebook. Due to the global prevalence of Facebook, this study incorporated an international perspective by holding focus groups comprising 12 signed language interpreters from three nations: the United States, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. Facebook was perceived as a beneficial tool for promoting awareness and information about professional news and for implicit professional self-promotion. Specific strategies were reported for managing professional presentations of self on the social networking site. Interpreters promoting accessibility at events where their presence was requested was deemed acceptable, but further research is …
“That Is Not The Question I Put To You, Officer”: An Analysis Of Student Legal Interpreting Errors, Jo Anna Burn, Ineke Crezee
“That Is Not The Question I Put To You, Officer”: An Analysis Of Student Legal Interpreting Errors, Jo Anna Burn, Ineke Crezee
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Court interpreting is a challenging and highly skilled profession. Legal questions are designed to achieve a large variety of functions. Often the true function is not the most obvious, the meaning is not literal, or there is no direct lexical or grammatical equivalent in the target language. Preparing interpreting students for interpreting legal questioning is very difficult and best achieved by exposing learners to a wide range of question forms in a safe practice environment. In order to ascertain which question types are most difficult to interpret, the authors undertook an analysis of question forms extracted from courtroom discourse, had …

Using Social Media To Foster Identification In Indonesia's 2014 Presidential Election: An Examination Of Facebook Politics From Kenneth Burke's Dramatistic Perspective, Dina Septiani S. Basuki
Using Social Media To Foster Identification In Indonesia's 2014 Presidential Election: An Examination Of Facebook Politics From Kenneth Burke's Dramatistic Perspective, Dina Septiani S. Basuki
All Dissertations
This dissertation examines the intersection of rhetorical studies with social media studies, investigates the particular use of social media in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, and address relevant theories such as Kenneth Burke's dramatistic perspective, Henry Jenkin's participatory culture, and Douglas Eyman's digital rhetoric. I focus on the rhetorical principle to analyse Indonesia's 2014 presidential election by applying the following selected examples of identification categories: 1) The Common Ground Technique, 2) Identification through antithesis, 3) The assumed or transcendent 'we.' The two candidates running for the 2014 Indonesian presidential election were Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, and Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi†Widodo. …

Quotidian Rhetorics: Estrangement, The Everyday, And Transitioning Filipinoness Into An/Other Beginning, Daphne Tatiana P. Tolentino-Canlas
All Dissertations
This project studies the fragments of the everyday lives of Filipino Americans, captured and interpreted via vernacular video. Read through three modes of estrangement (translation, nostalgia, and transition), Filipinoness is rendered as unheimlich or “homeless†to open multiple interpretations of this cultural identification. Filipino racial and cultural formation in the United States is often concealed by categories that tend to homogenize Asian American experience and disregard the specificity of the colonial relationship between America and the Philippines, flouting Filipino and Filipino Americans' struggles against a simultaneous ambiguity, invisibility, and strangeness as hybrid persons of color. Through an interpretive reading of …

The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to explore the perceptions of 13 first-year teachers as it relates to their readiness to meet the academic needs of their minority students. The findings provided information on their readiness, teacher preparation programs, and support needed from school leaders during their Induction year of teaching. The study was designed to explore the academic needs of the diverse population of students in a rural county school district in the Upstate of South Carolina. A triangulated study was conducted to include face-to-face interviews and an analysis of the transcripts to explore and examine the …
Post-Diagnosis: A Networked Framework For Narrative Reassemblage, Kristen Gay
Post-Diagnosis: A Networked Framework For Narrative Reassemblage, Kristen Gay
All Dissertations
This dissertation examines the relationship between diagnostic communication practices and deliberative rhetoric through the lens of Actor-Network theory and feminist theory. Specifically, I argue that Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory (ANT) provides a generative framework for tracing diagnostic networks as it accounts for uncertainty, dispersed agency, community stakeholders, and nonhumans. The chapters explore how a networked approach to diagnosis opens up opportunities to reform doctor-patient relationships, expands our conceptions of diagnostic actants, suggests ways to respond to patients living at risk for disease, and broadens our understanding of ethos in healthcare contexts. Furthermore, I also consider how a networked framework can …
