Look Who's Talking: A Multi-Case Study Of In-Service English Language Arts Teachers' Conceptions And Uses Of Discussion In The Secondary Classroom, John D. Mcelroy Aug 2017

Look Who's Talking: A Multi-Case Study Of In-Service English Language Arts Teachers' Conceptions And Uses Of Discussion In The Secondary Classroom, John D. Mcelroy

All Dissertations

Educational scholars and practitioners recognize that classroom discussion offers great promise for helping students develop content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a variety of meta-cognitive and process skills associated with learning content knowledge and disciplinary processes. Despite this research-based and anecdotal consensus regarding the value of discussion, an equally extensive body of research shows that discussion is not used in U.S. classrooms as consistently or effectively as it might be. This study sought to examine this issue by exploring the relationship between in-service English language arts teachers' beliefs about discussion, their goals for the use of discussion, and their actual …

Turkish Pre-Service Secondary Mathematics Teachers: An Examination Of Tpack, Affect, And Their Relationship, Ercan Dede Aug 2017

Turkish Pre-Service Secondary Mathematics Teachers: An Examination Of Tpack, Affect, And Their Relationship, Ercan Dede

All Dissertations

Pre-service teachers' knowledge, beliefs or attitudes gained during their undergraduate education is one of the most influential factors shaping their future teaching in their field. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge framework (TPACK; Mishra & Koehler, 2006) identifies the knowledge domains needed by teachers to effectively integrate technology into teaching their field. Due to the fact that pre-service teachers' TPACK domains cannot be directly measured, most of research studies in the literature addressed developing a TPACK survey instrument in order to indirectly measure teachers' TPACK in terms of their perceptions. However, there were rare research studies focusing on development a TPACK survey …

Identification Of Genetic Variants Underlying Simple And Complex Canine Myopathies, Jacquelyn Marie Evans Aug 2017

Identification Of Genetic Variants Underlying Simple And Complex Canine Myopathies, Jacquelyn Marie Evans

All Dissertations

The unique population structure of dog breeds, arising from their domestication from gray wolves and subsequent breed formation, and the similarity of their inherited diseases to human disorders make them an ideal comparative genetics model. Herein the genetic basis of three canine muscle diseases, each a model for human disease, is investigated using genome-wide approaches. Nemaline rod myopathy (NM) is one of the most common congenital myopathies in people and is characterized by rod bodies in the muscle fibers, muscle weakness, and reduced muscle tone. We characterized the first large animal model of autosomal recessive NM in a family of …

Exploring The Key Determinants Of Bicycle Share Program Use In A Leisure Context, Li-Hsin Chen Aug 2017

Exploring The Key Determinants Of Bicycle Share Program Use In A Leisure Context, Li-Hsin Chen

All Dissertations

Over the past two decades, bicycle share programs (BSPs) have developed rapidly around the world, with studies finding that people use such service not only for commuting but also for leisure. However, compared to utilitarian BSP users, limited research has focused on the factors influencing BSP use for leisure experiences. To begin this limitation in the current cycling literature, this dissertation explores the key determinants of leisure BSP use. The extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology proposed by Venkatesh, Thong, and Xu (2012) and the dual-attitudes model conceptualized by Wilson, Lindsey, and Schooler (2000) provided the theoretical …

The Role Of Implementation In Leisure, Experiential Education, And Recreation, Ryan J. Gagnon Aug 2017

The Role Of Implementation In Leisure, Experiential Education, And Recreation, Ryan J. Gagnon

All Dissertations

Within Leisure, Experiential Education, and Recreation (LER) research, there is a shift to evidence-based practices (EBP) in program design and assessment, reflecting the transition to EBPs within the prevention, health, and social sciences. However, one area that still lacks conceptual development and application within LER relates to how programs are implemented. This study contributes both to LER and the broader social sciences by examining the multiple dimensions of implementation within residential summer camp. First, this study reviews the macro level factors that contribute to or inhibit implementation quality. Second, this study examines the factors that promote implementation quality at the …

Economic Growth In The Caribbean And Other Topics, Huili Li Aug 2017

Economic Growth In The Caribbean And Other Topics, Huili Li

All Dissertations

Income differences across country, banking crises and oil price shocks are the dominant macroeconomic features of our age and main economic difficulties faced by economies. This paper attempts to discuss these three topics one by one.

In the first Chapter, using a PPP-adjusted series of GDP per capita for the entire Caribbean over 1960-2013 period, we examine why some countries in this area are so rich and some others are not. We employ a Bayesian Model Averaging Framework and surprisingly find that the identity of last colonizer and the length of history after achieving independence matter most in determining the …

Using Botnet Technologies To Counteract Network Traffic Analysis, Yu Fu Aug 2017

Using Botnet Technologies To Counteract Network Traffic Analysis, Yu Fu

All Dissertations

Botnets have been problematic for over a decade. They are used to launch malicious activities including DDoS (Distributed-Denial-of-Service), spamming, identity theft, unauthorized bitcoin mining and malware distribution. A recent nation-wide DDoS attacks caused by the Mirai botnet on 10/21/2016 involving 10s of millions of IP addresses took down Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, The New York Times, Pinterest, PayPal and other major websites. In response to take-down campaigns by security personnel, botmasters have developed technologies to evade detection. The most widely used evasion technique is DNS fast-flux, where the botmaster frequently changes the mapping between domain names and IP addresses of the …

Pilot Study: Evaluating The Risk Of Allergen Cross-Contact In Ice Cream Scoop Shop Dipper Wells, Lindsey Lake Aug 2017

Pilot Study: Evaluating The Risk Of Allergen Cross-Contact In Ice Cream Scoop Shop Dipper Wells, Lindsey Lake

All Theses

Food allergies are a serious and growing problem in developed countries. Allergen cross-contact at foodservice establishments is a common cause of food allergic reactions. Therefore, this study sought to determine if dipper wells used in ice cream scoop shops pose a relevant risk to food allergy sufferers. First, a matrix study was conducted to evaluate if peanut detection by real-time PCR was inhibited by the ice cream matrix, as fat and proteins are known PCR inhibitors. Frozen ice cream, liquid ice cream mix, and water matrices were tested. Second, a controlled time trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of …

Madness In The Media: Demystifying The Emergence Of An Ocd Trope In Television, Sam Martin Aug 2017

Madness In The Media: Demystifying The Emergence Of An Ocd Trope In Television, Sam Martin

All Theses

To live with Obsessive-Compulsive disorder is to live a life constantly misrepresented and misunderstood. By investigating the types of representations of the disorder found in popular visual media, one can surmise the drastic disparity that exists between the lived experience of OCD and the visually locked in version commonly shows to audiences. Comparing these representations with clinical, experiential, and anecdotal evidence leads to the conclusion that popular media, as well as society writ large, are primarily focused on appropriating and trivializing the compulsive behaviors of those with OCD while altogether neglecting the harsh reality of the intrusive thoughts that drive …
