Accounting For Uncertainty In Process Optimization Initiatives With Statistical Convolutions And Stochastic Programming Techniques, Russell William Krenek May 2018

Accounting For Uncertainty In Process Optimization Initiatives With Statistical Convolutions And Stochastic Programming Techniques, Russell William Krenek

All Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the uncertainty of process means and variances in order to improve processes with stochastic characteristics due to the complex nature of the underlying probability distributions. First, the gap between the existing conceptual notion of defects per million opportunities (DPMO) as part of process improvement initiatives and its applications to real-world engineering processes is explored. This is important because the current way of obtaining the DPMOs documented in the literature is problematic since it strictly assumes that there will be a shift in the process mean over time, while process variability remains unchanged. …

Three Essays On An Emerging Financial Market, Yuekai Cheng May 2018

Three Essays On An Emerging Financial Market, Yuekai Cheng

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines the impact of retail trading, price limit rule and market opening on the Chinese stock market. The Chinese stock market is the second largest in the world based on market capital. In addition, it has a daily average turnover eight times of the US stock market. It also has a price limit rule which limits its daily fluctuation. Furthermore, retail investors play an important role in the Chinese stock market, meaning its investor structure is different from that of developed stock markets. In the first chapter, I explore the impact of the breadth of ownership on stock …

Dendarian: A Young Man's Quest & The Functions Of Fairy Tales, Daniel Atkinson May 2018

Dendarian: A Young Man's Quest & The Functions Of Fairy Tales, Daniel Atkinson

All Theses

The primary content of this creative thesis is a portion of a manuscript: the prologue and first two chapters of a novel to be called Dendarian: A Young Man’s Quest, which could be considered a work of literary fantasy. Secondarily, this thesis contains a critical essay entitled “The Functions of Fairy Tales,” which explores the ways in which the fairy tale form has been used in recent years by various authors to address social and philosophical issues. This essay sheds light on my own creative work in that Dendarian attempts on several levels to explore cultural values within Western society.

Reconstructing The Past For The Future: Denmark Vesey's Charleston As A Case Study In Building A Sustainable Digital Model, Matthew Amis May 2018

Reconstructing The Past For The Future: Denmark Vesey's Charleston As A Case Study In Building A Sustainable Digital Model, Matthew Amis

All Theses

Our capability to digitally recreate the past in the form of three dimensional modeling has exponentially grown in the past thirty years. This growth is both welcome and problematic to the heritage sector. How to utilize this technology in a sustainable manner has become a central discussion in topical literature, and identifying methods to produce historic resources that remain useful and accessible as technology evolves is becoming increasingly more important. This thesis explores existing digital heritage models to establish keys to crafting sustainable resources within the field. An in‐depth review of modeling software is presented with particular focus placed on …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Effect Of Functional Ordering On Morphological Chart Exploration, Anant Chawla May 2018

An Experimental Investigation Of The Effect Of Functional Ordering On Morphological Chart Exploration, Anant Chawla

All Theses

Morphological Charts are tools used to systematically explore the design solution space. It consists of a table with first column listing the functions that define the design problem and subsequent columns enumerating means (solutions) to achieving each function. Combining one means for each function produces an integrated design concept solution. The potential number of integrated design concept solutions which can be generated from a morphological chart increase when adding rows or columns. However, limited guidelines are available to aid in curbing this combinatorial explosion while identifying high quality concepts. In addition, instructions to systematically arrange functions and means in the …

Orson Fowler's Influence In The Shenandoah Valley: Gravel Wall Buildings In Augusta County, Virginia., Samuel Biggers May 2018

Orson Fowler's Influence In The Shenandoah Valley: Gravel Wall Buildings In Augusta County, Virginia., Samuel Biggers

All Theses

Orson Squire Fowler remains a well-known name within the field of architectural history, thanks to his octagonal house designs which enjoyed a degree of popularity during the second half of the nineteenth century. An avid phrenologist, Fowler’s concern for healthy living environments influenced his house designs. In the first edition of his book A Home For All (1848), Fowler advocated for board wall construction for houses, a method he abandoned in the third edition (1853) in favor of concrete. The material he described as concrete would be laid in a “gravel wall plan” and consisted of a lime-based mortar with …

Structural Failure Patterns Of Mid-Nineteenth Century Masonry Buildings Of Charleston, Andrea Joyce Cooper May 2018

Structural Failure Patterns Of Mid-Nineteenth Century Masonry Buildings Of Charleston, Andrea Joyce Cooper

All Theses

Structural issues, and even structural failures, have recently emerged in a number of masonry structures built in the mid-19th century (1838-1860) in the Charleston area. There has not been a clear answer as to why these structural problems are occurring disproportionately to failures in buildings built in other time periods. Damage during the 1886 Earthquake led to several hypotheses of why buildings from this era were preforming poorly. This thesis investigates two hypotheses. It is crucial to determine if there is a reason or pattern for these problems and failures. The main intention of this thesis, starting with the assumption …

"It's All A Blind": Scopic Economies In Henry James' Washington Square, Carrie L. Hill May 2018

"It's All A Blind": Scopic Economies In Henry James' Washington Square, Carrie L. Hill

All Theses

This paper addresses the role that Henry James’ Washington Square plays in creating spaces of power through the medium of gazing. The first section of this paper examines the male-centric arguments of the book, namely that of the social and economic spheres, and how the two main male characters inhabit and manipulate these areas. The majority of this paper is concerned with the play of the female gaze and how certain female characters in the novel, specifically Catherine, are able to train their own gazes and then come, in turn, to manipulate the gazes of the men who seek to …

The Influence Of Yoga On Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury Related To Sleep And Mood, Charity Hubbard

All Theses

Sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has a significant effect on an individual’s physical and mental abilities, resulting in decreased independence. Residual effects of TBI often include sleep and mood disorders. Sleep disorders include any disturbance in an individual’s quality of sleep and daytime functioning as a result; while mood disorders include depression, anxiety, and adjustment to injury. Rehabilitation after TBI involves a wide range of therapeutic services of which recreational therapy can serve as a holistic therapy, addressing both the mind and the body. Yoga as a recreational therapy intervention may be used to improve functioning for individuals with …

The Culture Of The Body: The Beautiful, Sublime, And Ugly In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Courtney Huff-Oelberg May 2018

The Culture Of The Body: The Beautiful, Sublime, And Ugly In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Courtney Huff-Oelberg

All Theses

This thesis uses Edmund Burke’s concepts of the sublime and beautiful to consider social categories within Frankenstein. Reading the creature as excluded from the aesthetic categories of the sublime and the beautiful, the thesis locates Frankenstein’s creation within a category all its own: the ugly. Since the creature is clearly left out of the category of the beautiful, one might imagine he could be comprehended under the classification of sublimity; however, he actually produces horror and disgust. The final section reads the creature’s label as ugly as a reflection on the classifications of the beautiful and the sublime. Looking at …

Better Than Adequate: An Investigation In Contemporary Short Fiction, Stephen Michael Hundley May 2018

Better Than Adequate: An Investigation In Contemporary Short Fiction, Stephen Michael Hundley

All Theses

This thesis is comprised of two components—one critical and one creative—sharing one, convergent goal of achieving a better understanding of, and ability to produce, quality fiction. The critical component addresses craft elements in contemporary fiction. Specifically, these elements include: premise, place, and decoder statements. By analyzing these techniques in the work of active, or otherwise remarkable, authors, the thesis explores the ways in which the pieces are successful and attempts to isolate and come to an understanding of the specific elements employed. The creative component, made up of six works of short fiction, hopes to employ the techniques discussed in …

Making Interpretations: Digitally Adapting Yeats's 'Ego Dominus Tuus' As A Digital Comic, Jared Jameson May 2018

Making Interpretations: Digitally Adapting Yeats's 'Ego Dominus Tuus' As A Digital Comic, Jared Jameson

All Theses

Through adapting Yeats’s “Ego Dominus Tuus” as a digital comic the close ties between the act of interpretation and the creative process are showcased. The process explores how collaborating with those from other disciplines, in this case graphic arts, can benefit humanities scholars by not only allowing them to bring their interpretations to life through creative means but also by helping them to build and develop those interpretations in ways that may not have been otherwise apparent. In assessing this experience, a strong case can be made for viewing interpretive skills as creative devices, implementing inter-disciplinary collaboration within humanities-based instruction, …

The Desubjectified Subject In The Poetry Of Rosmarie Waldrop, Amanda Rebecca Johnson May 2018

The Desubjectified Subject In The Poetry Of Rosmarie Waldrop, Amanda Rebecca Johnson

All Theses

Criticism of Rosmarie Waldrop’s Driven to Abstraction has centered around her fascination with the notion of zero as both a negation and the locus of infinity, but has so far neglected to discuss the implications that this lacuna has on the role of the subject. True to its title, Driven takes the reader on a journey toward nothingness where desubjectification is made into the subject of the work. Through the use of the prose poem which eschews traditional poetic form and conventional syntax, Waldrop employs a collage that not only provides material representation of abstract concepts, but also demonstrates the …

Edward Ii: Negotiations Of Credit In The Early Modern Public Sphere, Jane E. Kuebler May 2018

Edward Ii: Negotiations Of Credit In The Early Modern Public Sphere, Jane E. Kuebler

All Theses

This paper addresses the role that Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II plays in the establishing and expanding of an early modern public sphere. By examining the ways that power is earned, and wielded in the play, Marlowe demonstrates an economy of cultural credit that operates in both the financial and the socio/political spheres of public life in early modern England. Marlowe applies the logic of that economy beyond the realm of the common people and subjects the historical monarch to the same parameters of judgement that flourished in society, drawing parallels with the currently reigning Elizabeth I, and opening up a …

Investigating Seismic Successes And Failures In 1886 Charleston, James Stevenson Lyles May 2018

Investigating Seismic Successes And Failures In 1886 Charleston, James Stevenson Lyles

All Theses

The Charleston Earthquake of 1886 damaged every recorded masonry building on the Charleston Peninsula. Newer unreinforced masonry buildings experienced more extensive damage than older ones. A USGS survey of this phenomenon, produced in 1889 by Captain C. E. Dutton, concluded that this variation in damage was caused by the difference in seismicity between “made” ground and solid ground. A more recent study by Robinson and Talwani (1983) concluded that quality of materials and craftmanship in construction caused the variation in damage. This thesis assesses Charleston’s masonry buildings’ susceptibility to seismic damage by their orientation, date of construction, brick bond, use, …

The Work Of Water In Edwidge Danticat's Environmental Imagination, Gabrielle Nugent May 2018

The Work Of Water In Edwidge Danticat's Environmental Imagination, Gabrielle Nugent

All Theses

This paper argues that focusing on seascapes in Danticat’s fiction unsettles former land-sea relations and, in turn, generates fluid conceptual alternatives to rigid colonial histories, hierarchies, and temporal scales. Investigating how the water in Danticat’s fiction upends cultural narratives of colonial progress and modernization’s processes also yields considerations of how Danticat’s novels entail a widening of the customary aperture of ecocritcism. Thinking about Danticat’s fiction environmentally raises the stakes for how we may think about the links between “the local” and contexts of planetary reach on an “ecoglobal” scale. Foregrounding these concerns when reading Danticat’s work bears directly on contemporary …

The Architecture Of Keeping Animals: Preservation Responses To Changing Animal Welfare Ideals In Mid-Sized American Zoos, Victoria Mccollum May 2018

The Architecture Of Keeping Animals: Preservation Responses To Changing Animal Welfare Ideals In Mid-Sized American Zoos, Victoria Mccollum

All Theses

Beginning in the mid-20th century, most of America’s Zoos began to re-evaluate the spaces which housed their living creatures. As advances in science and technology brought forward new information on animal welfare and care, zoos were soon faced with choices on the treatment of their current building stock. A range of preservation treatments emerged, from abandonment to demolition/new construction. This thesis examines the range of preservation treatments that took place in zoo buildings built prior to 1950 at the Lincoln Park Zoo (Chicago, IL), the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens (Cincinnati, OH), the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium (Toledo, OH) and …

Hardscramble: A Case Study Of Eliciting Conservation Values Through Vernacular Conservation Methods, Taylor Andrew Parker May 2018

Hardscramble: A Case Study Of Eliciting Conservation Values Through Vernacular Conservation Methods, Taylor Andrew Parker

All Theses

Mrs. Margaret Lloyd was a philanthropist in South Carolina society who developed strong pro-environmental behaviors after a mid-life environmental epiphany. She passed away in 2014 and toward the end of her life she donated an 853-acre property - named Hardscramble - in Camden, South Carolina to Clemson University. The land and an associated endowment are valued at approximately $10 million dollars. There are stipulations that the donation be managed in accordance to her wishes, but they are vaguely identified legally as conservation values. Since her death there have been conflicting opinions among stakeholders as to her vision and values that …

It's Not All Water Under The Bridge: Reevaluating Early Methods Of Survey With A Case Study In St. John's Parish, Kristina Poston May 2018

It's Not All Water Under The Bridge: Reevaluating Early Methods Of Survey With A Case Study In St. John's Parish, Kristina Poston

All Theses

Historic Preservation’s concept of significance has evolved throughout the discipline’s short lifespan. While this field is ever growing and adapting, there are pieces of history that get lost while waiting to be deemed significant. This leads to buildings, places, sites, and objects becoming lost while in hindsight they have significant qualities. However, this does not mean that information is lost permanently. This thesis reevaluates the plantation landscapes of St. John’s Parish, South Carolina lost when inundated by Lake Moultrie in 1942. Prior to this inundation, all structures were dismantled. This area covered roughly eighty-six square miles and contained twenty plantations. …

Transgressive Theatricalities: Questioning The Existence Of A Sincere Self In Sensation Fiction, Carley Amanda Robertson May 2018

Transgressive Theatricalities: Questioning The Existence Of A Sincere Self In Sensation Fiction, Carley Amanda Robertson

All Theses

This paper seeks to explore connections between the sensation fiction genre of the 1860s and theatricality. The theatricality present in sensation fiction plays on the fears of acting and insincerity that Nina Auerbach outlines in her book Private Theatricals: The Lives of the Victorians. Theatricality differs from performance or performativity, areas abundant with scholarship, in that it describes a person’s ability to perform, not elements of an individual performance. In this thesis, I analyze characters within sensation fiction who utilize their theatricality in order to mask their sincere identities or interior self, or portions of their identities in some cases. …

Living To Work: The Effects Of Occupational Calling On Mental Health At Work, Chloe A. Wilson May 2018

Living To Work: The Effects Of Occupational Calling On Mental Health At Work, Chloe A. Wilson

All Theses

While many employees work to live, others live to work. Those who experience work this way are described as having a calling. Occupational calling refers to employees who feel emotional ties to their work, viewing their work as both important and rewarding resulting from a transcendent summons, having purposeful work, or a prosocial orientation. Many positive outcomes have been linked to calling, but less is known about the potential negative outcomes that may also occur. Although a few studies have begun to investigate the negative effects of having a calling, less research has focused on distinguishing when positive versus negative …
