Yeats’S White Vellum Notebook, 1930–1933, Wayne K. Chapman May 2018

Yeats’S White Vellum Notebook, 1930–1933, Wayne K. Chapman

International Yeats Studies

This essay examines the present state of affairs concerning “one of the great literary manuscripts of our time, the great vellum notebook” that Sotheby’s advertised and sold for the first time in 1985. That sale and a subsequent one in 1990 are related to the contents of the notebook as ascertained from finding aids used by the editors of the Cornell Yeats series, including Chapman, as well as from the examination of extant microfilms of the notebook, the location of the original having been lost. Particularly useful for new and on-going textual-genetic studies in Yeats collections at the National Library …

India In Yeats’S Early Imagination: Mohini Chatterjee And Kālidāsa, Ashim Dutta May 2018

India In Yeats’S Early Imagination: Mohini Chatterjee And Kālidāsa, Ashim Dutta

International Yeats Studies

W. B. Yeats’s interest in India persisted throughout his variegated life and career, starting in the late nineteenth century and lasting through the final decade of his life. This article concentrates on his early years when he first came to terms with Indian philosophy, religion, and literature via the Vedāntist-Theosophist Mohini Chatterjee and the work of the fifth-century Sanskrit playwright Kālidāsa. With a view to examining critically Yeats’s creative engagement with, and appropriation of, these disparate materials, this article closely reads a discarded 1880s poem on Chatterjee’s teaching and its later 1929 version, “Mohini Chatterjee,” as well as his early …

Yeats's Re-Enchanted Nature, Seán Hewitt May 2018

Yeats's Re-Enchanted Nature, Seán Hewitt

International Yeats Studies

W. B. Yeats identified anti-Enlightenment principles as being central to his generation’s artistic project. Characterizing the worldview he was writing against, he argued that “the mischief began at the end of the seventeenth century when man became passive before a mechanized nature” (OBMV, xxvii). By charting the processes by which he reimagined nature and the poet’s (and poem’s) position in relation to it, we can begin to understand Yeats’s developing ecological relationships as a matrix for his shifting understanding of mysticism (and vice versa). Focusing in particular on the prefatory texts to The Shadowy Waters, this article …

Intercultural Crisis Communication: Examining The Experiences Of Crisis Sojourners, Andrew S. Pyle May 2018

Intercultural Crisis Communication: Examining The Experiences Of Crisis Sojourners, Andrew S. Pyle

Publications

The concept of the sojourner has been studied in a variety of contexts, such as business, education, and international aid. However, there is as yet no communication research on the topic of the crisis sojourner. Consequently, the goal of this study was to explore experiences of crisis sojourners to determine what they perceive as effective and ineffective communication in intercultural settings. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 emergency responders who deploy internationally following events such as the earthquake in Haiti or the Fukushima meltdown. Results showed crisis sojourners from this population were aware of cultural differences and highly alert to …

Peripheral Biomarkers Of Inflammation Following Blast Exposure In A Clinical Population, Katie Edwards May 2018

Peripheral Biomarkers Of Inflammation Following Blast Exposure In A Clinical Population, Katie Edwards

All Dissertations

Concussions resulting from blast exposures represent a significant source of injury among military service members and the civilian population. Overall, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a significant cause of hospitalization, disability, long-term care, and mortality across all age groups in the United States. Blast induced traumatic brain injury (biTBI) is an increasingly recognized subtype of brain injury, especially among military personnel. Blast exposure may influence a number of neurological processes, such as the inflammatory response, representing a unique biological profile. Outcomes from a TBI vary, even in similar injuries, and biomarkers including proteins and gene expression are increasingly studied to …

Prisons, Genres, And Big Data: Understanding The Language Of Corrections In America's Prisons, Eric Stephens May 2018

Prisons, Genres, And Big Data: Understanding The Language Of Corrections In America's Prisons, Eric Stephens

All Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to answer one fundamental question: How can I as a researcher conduct social justice research that is ethical, durable, and portable? As social justice research becomes more prominent in the field of technical and professional communication, ethical research practices must be maintained to avoid an unintentional wounding of the subjects for whom researchers hope to advocate. The dissertation is divided into five sections, each written as a stand-alone article that builds on the principles of the section before it. Each section addresses a key question:

1) How do I ethically engage in social justice research?

2) How …

Return With Honor: An Investigation Of The Reentry Experiences And Discourses Of Returning Missionaries In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Garrett Stone May 2018

Return With Honor: An Investigation Of The Reentry Experiences And Discourses Of Returning Missionaries In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Garrett Stone

All Dissertations

Reentry is one of the most difficult and important periods of a traveler’s journey – a time to reflect on and integrate new experiences, identities, and perspectives into life at home. This period is often bittersweet and marked by a host of challenges and symptomology. Religious language and practice may function to alleviate or exacerbate these routine reentry challenges, or introduce a host of new concerns. Situated in the nexus of religion and tourism, the purpose of this critical-constructive qualitative inquiry is to (a) investigate the experiences and discourses of returning missionaries in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day …

Who Am I? Refugee Adolescents' Transformation And Negotiation Of Identities At The Cultural Borders, Aamena Saleh May 2018

Who Am I? Refugee Adolescents' Transformation And Negotiation Of Identities At The Cultural Borders, Aamena Saleh

All Dissertations

Many gaps exist in the research on refugee students in general, with the overall portrayal in the literature presenting a school experience in which refugees struggle academically, socially, and emotionally (Roxas, 2008; McBrien, 2005; Lerner, 2012; Lustig, 2004; Smith & Halbert, 2013). Current research discusses social and linguistic struggles frequently, and highlights the need for schools to acknowledge refugees’ backgrounds and draw on their linguistic repertoires to aid their acquisition of the English language (Cummins, 2005; Cummins, et al., 2006; Gutierrez, Baquedano-Lopez, & Tejeda, 1999; Gutierrez, Baquedano-Lopez, Alvarez, & Chiu, 1999). Little has been done to uncover who refugees are …

Dis/Orienting 'Middle East': A Cart-Rhetorical Rhizomatic Mapping, Eda Ozyesilpinar May 2018

Dis/Orienting 'Middle East': A Cart-Rhetorical Rhizomatic Mapping, Eda Ozyesilpinar

All Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the association between the geopolitical region Middle East and the unjust profiling of Islamic terrorism. I examine this connection from the lens of border-politics and deconstruct Western cartographic discourses that constructed the current misrepresentative and extensively totalizing identity of Middle East as the land of Muslim terrorists. My conjecture is framed around Karen Culcasi’s argument on how Middle East was re-invented in the discourse of Orientalism during the early twentieth century. To challenge the region’s current misrepresentative and unjust socio-spatial identity, I map how the region’s inherently othered identity under the European gaze of Orientalism has …

Getting Things Done For Life: Long-Term Impact Of Americorps Service For Diverse Groups Of Members, Matthew D. Hudson-Flege

All Dissertations

Each year, more than 75,000 Americans participate in a year of service with AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps members meet a variety of pressing needs in diverse communities throughout the United States in the short term, and in the long-term AmeriCorps programs seek to foster skilled, educated leaders who will remain civically engaged in their communities long after their year of service has ended. The 1999-2007 AmeriCorps Longitudinal Study tracked approximately 2,000 AmeriCorps members, as well as a comparison group of approximately 2,000 individuals who expressed an interest in AmeriCorps but ultimately did not serve, in order to understand the long-term impact of …

Evaluation Of Animal Manure-Based Compost As An Environmental Source Of Clostridium Difficile, Muthu Dharmasena May 2018

Evaluation Of Animal Manure-Based Compost As An Environmental Source Of Clostridium Difficile, Muthu Dharmasena

All Dissertations

The number of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) cases associated with healthcare and community is increasing. Increased isolation of this pathogen from environmental samples of soil, water, livestock animals and their feces, and produce suggests its dissemination in the environment. Identification, molecular characterization, and revealing the relationship of those isolates with human pathogenicity would be very helpful in understanding the epidemiology of CDI. Livestock manure is a rich source of nutrients for the growth of many crops, and composted manure is widely used as a fertilizer in organic farming. Microbial activities increase the temperature of composting materials, providing sufficient heat to …

Affective Gaming: At The Intersection Of Rhetoric, Affect, And Video Games, Joshua A. Wood May 2018

Affective Gaming: At The Intersection Of Rhetoric, Affect, And Video Games, Joshua A. Wood

All Dissertations

Affective Gaming is an intervention in the field of game studies, designed to address the lack of racial diversity in games. I examine the role that emotion plays in games by melding game studies and rhetorical theory with affect theory and critical identity studies. I build a theory of gaming that is attuned to the way games provoke emotion in players in order to bring a new understanding of identity to game studies. I then turn towards a theory of game design that uses affect toward a rhetorical end, and finally turn this toward games in the classroom. I also …

Ontology-Based Domain-Specific Semantic Similarity Analysis And Applications, Xuebo Song May 2018

Ontology-Based Domain-Specific Semantic Similarity Analysis And Applications, Xuebo Song

All Dissertations

Millions of text data are penetrating into our daily life. These unstructured text data serve as a huge source of information. Efficient organization and analysis of the overwhelming text can filter out irrelevant and redundant information, uncover invaluable knowledge, thus significantly reduce human effort, facilitate knowledge discovery and enhance cognitive abilities. Semantic similarity analysis among text objects is one of the fundamental problems in text mining including document classifi-cation/clustering, recommendation, query expansion, information retrieval, relevance feedback, word sense disambiguation, etc. While a combination of common sense and domain knowledge could let a person quickly determine if two objects are similar, …

Computational Investigation Of The Morphological Design Dimensions Of Historic Hexagonal-Based Islamic Geometric Patterns, Mostafa Waleed Hashem Alani May 2018

Computational Investigation Of The Morphological Design Dimensions Of Historic Hexagonal-Based Islamic Geometric Patterns, Mostafa Waleed Hashem Alani

All Dissertations

This dissertation examines the morphology of Islamic Geometric Patterns (IGP). Using mixed methods, including the simulation of historical designs and content analysis, this dissertation explores the question of how it is possible to mathematically describe the IGP. The study argues that the compositional analysis of geometry is not solely sufficient to investigate the design characteristics of the IGP, and the underlying mathematics and computational nature of the IGP should be considered when investigating historical IGP.

The study presents a parametric description method that captures the reality of the IGP in numeric form and utilizes the form to derive representational codes …
