Remnants Of Existence: Discovering Value In Loss, Andrea Hardin Garland May 2019

Remnants Of Existence: Discovering Value In Loss, Andrea Hardin Garland

All Theses

Those who precede us in the continuum of humanity may affect our lives even if we are unaware of their influence. To illustrate the residue of previous generations, I emboss textiles inherited from my Southern American family. Formerly useful and distinctly decorative, these embroidered handkerchiefs, crocheted doilies, lace nightgowns and dress gloves are now antiquated curiosities. Using the force of a printing press, I form shadowy impressions of the articles on paper to communicate presence in absence, then manipulate the images with various media. I literally rinse, wring and dry many of these works in an effort to elevate the …

The Impact Of Color On Visual Retention And Preference In Logo Design, Aaron Taylor Alexander May 2019

The Impact Of Color On Visual Retention And Preference In Logo Design, Aaron Taylor Alexander

All Theses

Color is often the first thing a person will be drawn to in an object. It fills the world and activates people’s imagination. The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact that color has on a person’s ability to recall visual information. Company logos are used as a focus for this due to the importance a logo has in the way companies market themselves. Therefore, a logo should be memorable at a second’s glance.

This thesis attempts to solve the problem of understanding what makes a logo more memorable to a customer in order to assure maximum visual …

Rereading The Journal: Maintaining The Potential For Refinement, Julie Anne Edewaard May 2019

Rereading The Journal: Maintaining The Potential For Refinement, Julie Anne Edewaard

All Theses

While much of the Journal exemplifies Henry David Thoreau’s intent to improve the self, this thesis suggests that the Journal was used as a device for maintaining the potential to improve, or refine, rather than acting as a conduit for achieving the fully improved self. In his progress toward becoming his ideal self, Thoreau performs an act of defamiliarization in his writing by omitting himself from his entries and by writing about himself indirectly by writing about an entity that is separate from him, nature. This paper also explores the importance of the concept of change for Thoreau as it …

Micro And Macro Aspects Of Disability: An Analysis Of Differential 'Disabling' Experiences Associated With Information And Communication Technology And Political Economic Dimensions Of Persons With Disabilities In Myanmar, Dilshan Lakshitha Fernando May 2019

Micro And Macro Aspects Of Disability: An Analysis Of Differential 'Disabling' Experiences Associated With Information And Communication Technology And Political Economic Dimensions Of Persons With Disabilities In Myanmar, Dilshan Lakshitha Fernando

All Theses

According to the World Report on Disability compiled by the World Health Organization in 2011, 15 percent of world’s population lives with at least one form of disability and 80 percent of these persons with Disabilities (PWD) live in developing countries. Following the Social Model, Disability and Underdevelopment appear to form a regressive alliance that continues to bar a large population of human beings from a decent and independent life. However, as individual-level innovations, emerging ICT-based technological solutions promise to bridge the gap that prevents the application of developed world Disability policies to an underdeveloped context.

This study contextualized the …

A Change In Southern Character Through Southern Characters, Emma Mccracken May 2019

A Change In Southern Character Through Southern Characters, Emma Mccracken

All Theses

This dissertation traces the patterns in southern literature from the 1950s to 2019 that reveals a difference between an Old and New South that occurs circa 2000, when technology and urbanization was booming in the American south. However, it is important to note that it is not only the medium used to share works that is globalizing southern literature, but it is the way its writers have begun to break away from old tropes and traditions in the content of their writing. This pattern is best traced through the analysis of works by contemporary southern writers like Jill McCorkle, Randall …

Un-Conditional: Reflections On Teaching Conditionally-Enrolled Students, Emily Elayne Virtue May 2019

Un-Conditional: Reflections On Teaching Conditionally-Enrolled Students, Emily Elayne Virtue

All Dissertations

In this study I explore my pedagogical choices in teaching conditionally-enrolled students in a summer bridge program. I address who conditionally-enrolled students are, what support they may need in the classroom, and larger problems in higher education related to conditionally-enrolled students. This study was guided by two research questions: what pedagogical choices do I make in the classroom that foster an engaging environment for conditionally-enrolled and academically underprepared students? What are the emotional and tangible effects of teaching a literature course for conditionally-enrolled students and how does daily reflection of these effects impact pedagogical choices?

I use Scholarly Personal Narrative …

Signaling Your Beliefs: The Role Of Signal Strength On Identity Perceptions In A Social Media Environment, Marie Esposito May 2019

Signaling Your Beliefs: The Role Of Signal Strength On Identity Perceptions In A Social Media Environment, Marie Esposito

All Dissertations

Social media is increasingly being turned to by employment recruiters as a method of screening out job applicants. To date there has been little research examining what ques are most salient to recruiters when making employability decisions based on their screening of social media. This research seeks to begin to fill that gap by examining signal strength of political and religious identity presentation in a social media signaling environment.

In this research we differentiate between a conventional hireability screening environment and the new paradigm of social media employability screenings by making extensive use of both Signaling Theory and the Similarity …

The Rhetoric Of Neo-Orientalism: The Perpetuation Of Ideological Entanglements For Pakistan, Firasat Jabeen May 2019

The Rhetoric Of Neo-Orientalism: The Perpetuation Of Ideological Entanglements For Pakistan, Firasat Jabeen

All Dissertations

This research is a re-imagination of Edward Said’s landmark scholarship Orientalism from a Pakistani perspective. The study focuses on the construction and creation of ideologies positioned in mass media (both US and Pakistani) messages. In doing so, I consider Edward Said’s Orientalism as a set of two distinctive theories: (i) the theory of representation, and (ii) the theory of power. For the former, I study the production and promotion of ideologies in the representation of events and case studies. These case studies include: (i) the Malala Yousafzai case (2012), (ii) the US Drone Strikes case (2010), (iii) the Daniel Pearl …

Principals’ Influences On Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy: A Multiple Case Study, Debbie Lynn Bishop May 2019

Principals’ Influences On Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy: A Multiple Case Study, Debbie Lynn Bishop

All Dissertations

The overall purpose of this study was to identify how school leaders, in particular principals, influenced culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy. The goal was to examine the development of culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy in teachers who perceived themselves as having a high self-efficacy in a pilot study (Bishop, 2018). In this explanatory multiple case study (Yin, 2018), I specifically aimed to understand how a leader influenced culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy in the context of cultural differences between teacher and student. I conducted an iterative, explanation building process, beginning with a deductive coding of theoretical propositions, developed from relevant literature. I then …

Machinic Eyes: New And Post-Digital Aesthetics, Surveillance, And Resistance, Brian Gaines May 2019

Machinic Eyes: New And Post-Digital Aesthetics, Surveillance, And Resistance, Brian Gaines

All Dissertations

This work concerns the rise of the New Aesthetic, an art project developed by James Bridle in 2012. The New Aesthetic, as envisioned by Bridle, was chiefly concerned with the overlapping of physical and digital realities through both the artifacts produced by this overlapping and the systems involved therein. I introduce the advent of the New Aesthetic and present the major criticisms: the lack of a robust theoretical and scholarly framework, the lack of a historical framework, the privileging of artifacts over systems as new Aesthetic, and the fragmented scholarly outlook on the New Aesthetic.

Upon further examination, I discovered …

Investigating The Cultural Context For Big Cat Conservation Around The World, Kathleen Elizabeth Krafte May 2019

Investigating The Cultural Context For Big Cat Conservation Around The World, Kathleen Elizabeth Krafte

All Dissertations

Populations of predators are in decline worldwide as human growth and development destroys and alters their habitats. At the same time, large predators are a tourist attraction in many regions of the world, bringing essential income to governments and local communities. The complex interactions between predator populations and local communities often result in conflicts that can negatively impact both humans and wildlife populations. To gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of human-predator conflict and potential solutions, this study focuses on assessing the social suitability for predator conservation that measures the cultural context for conservation in a region. First, a …

Essays On Taxes, Guns, And Education, Benjamin Harbolt May 2019

Essays On Taxes, Guns, And Education, Benjamin Harbolt

All Dissertations

This dissertation studies three topics: sales tax avoidance, gun control, and management practices effect on student performance.

The first chapter studies the impact of a crackdown on e-commerce avoidance on cross-border shopping. As e-commerce has grown over the last few decades so has states' concern for its use for sales tax avoidance. Using a panel of Washington State tax jurisdictions from 2005 through 2015, I estimate the effect of a sales tax regime change on the elasticities of taxable sales. I find the regime change, targeted at reducing sales tax avoidance through remote purchases, had a differential impact that varied …

Visitor Impact At Historic Sites: An Assessment Of The Influence Of Usage, Interpretation, And Management On Material Degradation, Laurel Lynne Bartlett May 2019

Visitor Impact At Historic Sites: An Assessment Of The Influence Of Usage, Interpretation, And Management On Material Degradation, Laurel Lynne Bartlett

All Dissertations

Protection of cultural resources and sustainable visitation have been significant issues in the management of historic sites since the early nineteenth-century when site managers at Mount Vernon discovered damages to architectural materials from relic hunters. As tourism and the number of historic sites grew in the twentieth century, professional architectural conservators also took note of physical damage due to increased tourism. However, the impacts themselves are often a confluence of external factors, such as individual visitor behavior and the interpretation and management strategies that provide access.

Thus, with the goal of sustainable visitation, the present problem is to understand the …

Culturally Specific Shape Grammar: Formalism Of Geringsing Textiles Patterns Through Ethnography And Simulation, Nyoman Dewi Pebryani May 2019

Culturally Specific Shape Grammar: Formalism Of Geringsing Textiles Patterns Through Ethnography And Simulation, Nyoman Dewi Pebryani

All Dissertations

The patterns design in Geringsing textiles are unique because they are produced using the double-ikat weaving technique. The double-ikat weaving technique is found in only three places in the world: India, Indonesia, and Japan. Geringsing textile is produced in Tenganan Pegringsingan in Bali, Indonesia, and its culture passes from generation to generation as an oral tradition. To preserve, document, and digitize this knowledge, a sequential research methodology of ethnography and simulation with visual computation analysis—shape grammar—was employed in this study. This study was divided into several stages: (1) learning the double-ikat technique from the artisans on the site, (2) translating …

Process Over Product: Exploring Strategies To Record A Building Archaeology Investigation, Rucha Ravindra Kamath May 2019

Process Over Product: Exploring Strategies To Record A Building Archaeology Investigation, Rucha Ravindra Kamath

All Theses

Understanding the phases of a building’s evolution constitutes a critical step towards its preservation. The practice of building archaeology has emerged as a tool for investigating and interpreting the layers of a historic structure. Currently, a documentation guideline to assist in interpretive recording and representation of these phases and layers of a building’s history does not exist. Does the existing documentation guideline outlined by Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) adequately serve the demands of an interpretive recording? Through a critical analysis of precedent architectural and archaeological recording guidelines, this thesis creates a hybrid documentation process that combines features of architectural …

The Host Community Perceptions Of Volunteer Tourists In The Northern Tourist Circuit, Tanzania. Implications For Sustainable Tourism, Peter M. Ezra Apr 2019

The Host Community Perceptions Of Volunteer Tourists In The Northern Tourist Circuit, Tanzania. Implications For Sustainable Tourism, Peter M. Ezra

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

The role of volunteer tourism as an agent to foster global citizenship has been widely addressed by the literature. However, the conceptualizations of ‘volunteer tourism’ and ‘volunteer tourists’ in the context of global citizenship are still lacking important nuances and require more attention from both the research and teaching communities. The rationale for conducting this study arises from the current literature defining volunteer tourists based on the perspective where the majority of volunteer sending organizations and volunteer tourists come from – the primarily Western, developed country perspective. This study argues that this imbalance must be addressed and in response examines …

Predictive Factors Of Players' Acceptance Of Using Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (Mmorpgs) To Acquire English As A Second Language, Juan Li Apr 2019

Predictive Factors Of Players' Acceptance Of Using Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (Mmorpgs) To Acquire English As A Second Language, Juan Li

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

This study was designed to replicate and extend Bourgonjon et al. (2010)’s study on the factors predicting students' acceptance for using video games in the classrooms. In this study, an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and reliability test were conducted to validate the adapted instrument using the data collected from 371 participants. Then, a path model was formulated to examine the factors predicting players' preference for using MMORPGs to learn L2 English vocabulary. The results show that the factor of perceived learning opportunities is the most important factor in predicting players' preference, meaning that players would prefer to use MMORPGs to …

(Mis)Alignments In Mentorship: Exploring Challenges To Preservice Science Teacher Preparation, Mandy Biggers, Alison Riley Miller, Laura Zangori, Brooke A. Whitworth

Publications

The mentoring relationships between preservice teachers and their cooperating teachers have been established as critical to the retention or attrition of novice teachers (Clarke, Triggs, & Nielsen, 2014), yet little research has been conducted to examine what factors around mentor teacher selection and support are most salient to creating strong mentoring structures. In this study, we investigated how four U.S. states (one in the Southwest, one in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, and one in the South) recruit mentor teachers for secondary science preservice teachers, what requirements the mentor teachers must possess, how mentor teachers are incentivized to serve …

Bibliographic Studies

This catalog of bibliographic citations accounts for every publi-cation identified as part of the W. B. Yeats Library, which, since the death of Anne Yeats in 2001, has become a distinct part of the National Library of Ireland (NLI). In effect, the alphabetical list not counting publications that were sold or otherwise dispersed by the poet or his wife, George Yeats, in their lifetimes, or by members of their family up to 1971, when the late Glenn O’Malley of Arizona State University made an inventory that became the foundation for SUNY Professor Edward O’Shea’s A Descriptive Catalog of the W. …
