Online Project Based Learning: The Efficacy For Signed Language Interpreters, Campbell Mcdermid, James Pope Jun 2019

Online Project Based Learning: The Efficacy For Signed Language Interpreters, Campbell Mcdermid, James Pope

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Four online lessons were created to study the efficacy of teaching translation within a constructivist approach(Wilcox & Shaffer, 2005). The lessons were self-directed and project-based. Twenty participants supplied a baseline sight translation of an English story into American Sign Language (ASL). A model of “meaning” was used to assess the texts consisting of three levels: literal, enrichment and implicature (McDermid, 2012). A mixed-method evaluation was conducted and results showed that participants enriched their baseline target texts, ranging from 2 to 17 instances. Eight completed a number of online lessons and submitted a second translation of the text, which evidenced more …

The Effect Of Self-Repair On Judged Quality Of Consecutive Interpreting: Attending To Content, Form And Delivery, Weiwei Zhang, Zhongwei Song Jun 2019

The Effect Of Self-Repair On Judged Quality Of Consecutive Interpreting: Attending To Content, Form And Delivery, Weiwei Zhang, Zhongwei Song

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This paper investigates the correlations between self-repair and subjective assessments of student interpreters’ performance in consecutive interpreting(CI). Twelve interpretations from an interpreting contest in China are transcribed, with the self-repairs identified and annotated based on Levelt’s classification (1983), including both overt and covert repairs. In addition to the final scores awarded at the contest, different methods and raters are used to assess the comprising aspects of an overall quality, namely content, form and delivery. Statistical analysis shows that: (1)overt repairs have a strong positive correlation with content, and moderate negative correlations with form and delivery; (2) form and delivery are …

American Sign Language Competency: Comparing Student Readiness For Entry Into A Four-Year Interpreter Degree Program, Barbara Garrett, Emily G. Girardin

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Foundational language competence is directly related to a student interpreters’ success in interpreter education and ultimately, certification readiness upon graduation. This study focused on the American Sign Language (ASL) expressive competence of applicants to a four-year ASL English interpretation major through a pre-program screening of 250 applicants over eight years. Applicants’ ASL expressive competence compared scores of those who held two-year interpreting degrees to those who had completed four semesters of ASL. Data showed that applicants from two-year interpreting programs and applicants who have taken four semesters of ASL possessed similar expressive ASL competence. This study further examined if applicants …

Guiding Students Through Choppy Creative Waters: Collaborative Pedagogy To Empower Ethical Creators, Kelsey Sheaffer, Jessica Kohout-Tailor May 2019

Guiding Students Through Choppy Creative Waters: Collaborative Pedagogy To Empower Ethical Creators, Kelsey Sheaffer, Jessica Kohout-Tailor

Publications

With the rise of ‘multimodality’, students are increasingly creating digital projects that require an understanding of copyright that includes Creative Commons, to both search for and appropriately remix the original work of others. In this session, learn how two librarians collaboratively developed their student-centered pedagogy to apply active-learning strategies in the classroom for these special creative copyright sessions. In their approach, the librarians engaged the student-as-producer to make creative copyright more accessible and applicable to their projects. These instructional interventions build on the traditional lecture-style session on Copyright Law to support non-traditional projects.

West Point Women: An Oral History Of The West Point Experience And Leader Identity Development, Leslie Ann Lewis May 2019

West Point Women: An Oral History Of The West Point Experience And Leader Identity Development, Leslie Ann Lewis

All Dissertations

Although women have been at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point for over 40 years, they are an understudied group. This omission also encompasses studies about leader development and leader identity development. Over the years, West Point has focused its leadership research on identifying predictors of leadership performance and, with the integration of women cadets, merely added them into their studies to see if they had the same predictors as men. Other than this shift, the literature neglects how women’s experiences at West Point affected their leader identity development. To address this knowledge blind spot, this study …

The U.S. Foreclosure Crisis And Racial Change In The American South, Jermaine Marquise Durham May 2019

The U.S. Foreclosure Crisis And Racial Change In The American South, Jermaine Marquise Durham

All Dissertations

Despite the global impacts of the U.S. foreclosure crisis, research on how this event has shaped processes of neighborhood change at the local level is relatively limited. Although the immediate neighborhood impacts of the U.S. foreclosure crisis have been well documented, the long-term influences this historic event had on processes of racial succession is yet to be fully understood. Even less research has focused on how the foreclosure crisis influenced racial transitions in small to mid-sized cities in the American South. Using both quantitative and geographical analytic techniques, this multi-case study seeks to analyze the spatial distribution of foreclosures in …

Foster Care And Child Welfare, Kelsey V. Roberts May 2019

Foster Care And Child Welfare, Kelsey V. Roberts

All Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of three essays on the well-being of children who experience foster care. Foster care provides temporary, out-of-home placements for children, away from the perpetrators of abuse or neglect. Despite extensive discussion of the poor life outcomes foster children experience, our knowledge of the causal effects of a foster care placement is limited. I use unique data from South Carolina to estimate the causal impact of placement into foster care on children's educational outcomes, delinquency, and Medicaid enrollment. To address the endogeneity of the decision to remove a child from their home, I use the idiosyncratic propensity …

Off The Top: Look Development For A Viking Story Grounded In Historical Authenticity, Philip John Hatfield May 2019

Off The Top: Look Development For A Viking Story Grounded In Historical Authenticity, Philip John Hatfield

All Theses

This thesis showcases the background research and production of assets for an animated short film, Off the Top. This film tells the story of two Viking men who have a physical confrontation, which is resolved by the end of the narrative in a comedic fashion. This project draws elements from Viking history and culture to drive the design of the environment and characters in the story. Additionally, this thesis presents several methods for creating visually interesting props, environments, and characters that leverage procedurally-driven techniques for both modeling and surfacing.

Investigating Inequality: Peer Effects And Occupational Licensing, Bobby (Wing Yin) Chung May 2019

Investigating Inequality: Peer Effects And Occupational Licensing, Bobby (Wing Yin) Chung

All Dissertations

This dissertation discusses the role of social network and labor market regulation in understanding racial and gender inequality. The first chapter contributes to the discussion on childhood exposure by investigating the extent to which the educational background of peers' parents is related to a child's future college attainment. I analyze the friendship networks of a nationally representative sample of high-school students in the US and find that the spillover from peers' parents of the same gender operates independently of peers' academic performance. The effects are robust in addressing friendship selection. The same gender pattern suggests either the transmission of gender …

An Audience With The King, Charissa Eileen Fryberger May 2019

An Audience With The King, Charissa Eileen Fryberger

All Theses

This Creative Thesis attempts to contemplate one aspect of theological inquiry and puzzlement: the enigma of living between an all-powerful, omniscient Divine—the Cosmic King Who is capable of forming a sun or designing a rose—and the intimate Father-God Who holds our tears in His hand. It is an exploration of the indefinable relationship between fallible human beings and an omniscient and all-powerful, yet intimate God. Its variety of texts, though differing in form, all consider what it means to live in the tension of that paradox. The purpose of this work is not to offer answers to any of the …

A Critical Evaluation Of South Carolina's Contributions To The National Register Of Historic Places, Dana Emily Marks May 2019

A Critical Evaluation Of South Carolina's Contributions To The National Register Of Historic Places, Dana Emily Marks

All Theses

The National Register of Historic Places, as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, records places and spaces worthy of preservation throughout the United States. The legislation indicates, “the Secretary of the Interior is authorized to expand and maintain a National Register of Historic Places composed of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture.” The National Register should arguably reflect the nation’s history, which many resources claim it to achieve: “the National Register is the nation’s inventory of historic places and the national repository of documentation on the variety of …

Is There A Self In This Text? Satire, Passing, And Life In Caucasia, Myers Enlow May 2019

Is There A Self In This Text? Satire, Passing, And Life In Caucasia, Myers Enlow

All Theses

In this paper, I explore the ways in which Danzy Senna’s Caucasia exposes the racism of the American Dream through use of a satirical passing narrative. I draw on the existing scholarship surrounding satire and traditional passing narratives and apply it to Senna’s work to analyze the ways this novel differs from traditional passing narratives to comment on the absurdity of white desirability and the racial binary. Specifically, I look at Caucasia as a location that the main characters—biracial Birdie and Cole Lee; their white mother, Sandy; and their black father, Deck—must inhabit. This depiction of an all-white space the …

On The Edge Of The World: Examining Pro-Environmental Outcomes Of Last Chance Tourism In Kaktovik, Alaska, Lauren Miller May 2019

On The Edge Of The World: Examining Pro-Environmental Outcomes Of Last Chance Tourism In Kaktovik, Alaska, Lauren Miller

All Theses

Travel to impact-sensitive destinations has been on the rise in recent years. Coined last chance tourism (LCT), visitors are flocking to these imperiled destinations to see them before they are gone. To off-set their presence, which ultimately contributes to site degradation, a possible positive outcome of these LCT experiences is the creation of environmental ambassadors. Utilizing data collected from 189 visitor surveys, the purpose of this study is to provide a basis for understanding the visitor experience and outcomes of boat-based polar bear viewing in the Kaktovik area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This study contributes to current literature …

"I Was Quiet, But I Was Not Blind": The Surprising Consistency Of Fanny Price, Blake Elizabeth Bowens May 2019

"I Was Quiet, But I Was Not Blind": The Surprising Consistency Of Fanny Price, Blake Elizabeth Bowens

All Theses

Mansfield Park’s Fanny is not the heroine most readers expect to encounter in a Jane Austen novel. Unlike the heroines of Pride and Prejudice, or Emma, for example, she does not have to undergo any period of being wrong, and she does not have to change in order for her position to be accepted. In the midst of conversations about Fanny as a model of perfect conduct book activity, exemplary Christian morals, or Regency era femininity, readers and scholars often focus on whether or not Fanny exists as a perfect and consistent heroine, providing very strong and polarizing opinions on …

An Exploration Into Tornado Resistant Residential Clt Structures, Augustus L. Raymond May 2019

An Exploration Into Tornado Resistant Residential Clt Structures, Augustus L. Raymond

All Theses

This thesis covers initial concepts for a Cross-Laminated Timber house made to resist EF 3 tornado wind pressures. At the time of writing, it is believed this is the first study to consider using CLT to make a tornado resistant house. Going through analytical approaches in conjunction with ASCE 7-16, NDS 15, and PRG-320, this research hopes to lay groundwork for future research into the feasibility of such a house design at larger sizes and faster tornadoes. Because it is rather difficult to test experimentally how these structures will behave in tornadoes directly, a Mathcad sheet was created that gives …

Reading Charlotte And Branwell Brontë’S Early Writings As Colonialist Fantasy, Kristian Nicole Wilson May 2019

Reading Charlotte And Branwell Brontë’S Early Writings As Colonialist Fantasy, Kristian Nicole Wilson

All Theses

Charlotte and Branwell Brontë’s collaborative writing project, the Glass Town saga, is rarely the subject of academic examination that does not analyze it as either a derivative of the works of Sir Walter Scott or a precursor to Jane Eyre and The Professor. This paper instead considers Glass Town as a work of early fantasy, a reading which allows for an examination of colonialism’s relationship to the genre in its infant stages. Connecting Glass Town to nineteenth-century European theories of African history and development, and to articles of African exploration and conquest, I contextualize the colonialist messages contained in …

The Role Of Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Games In Facilitating Vocabulary Acquisition For English Language Learners: A Mixed-Methods Study, Juan Li May 2019

The Role Of Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Games In Facilitating Vocabulary Acquisition For English Language Learners: A Mixed-Methods Study, Juan Li

All Dissertations

Slow vocabulary development and poor comprehension among English Language learners (ELLs) (August, Carlo, & Snow, 2005) have resulted in an academic achievement gap between ELLs and native English-speaking learners in the United States (Klingner, Artiles, & Barletta, 2006; Wilde, 2010). This mixed-methods sequential explanatory research aims to help narrow the academic gap by providing increased engagement and interaction opportunities to ELLs. In this study, I replicated and extended Bourgonjon et al. (2010)’s study identifying the predictive factors of students’ acceptance for using video games in the classrooms. A sequential qualitative study with 11 selected participants was conducted to explain how …

Our Educative Reticence: A Grounded Theory Of Instructors’ Not Adopting Open Textbooks, Jonathan Lashley May 2019

Our Educative Reticence: A Grounded Theory Of Instructors’ Not Adopting Open Textbooks, Jonathan Lashley

All Dissertations

The Open Textbook Network (OTN)—an organization based out of the University of Minnesota and comprising over 1,000 postsecondary institutions—supports the open education movement by facilitating in-person workshops about, sharing training resources for, and curating a library of peer-reviewed open textbooks. Its efforts are meant to build awareness of open education among attendees by teaching them about the positive potential of open textbooks in addressing the rising costs of attending college, waning public investment in higher education, increasing pedagogical dependence on the course materials of commercial publishers, and curbing other barriers to affordability, access, and equity in higher education. While many …

There’S More To The Story: Shedding Light On Conflict Species Identification And The Unknown Impacts Of Conflict With Predators, Diane Helene Dotson May 2019

There’S More To The Story: Shedding Light On Conflict Species Identification And The Unknown Impacts Of Conflict With Predators, Diane Helene Dotson

All Theses

Local people living near protected areas are often dependent on these areas for livestock grazing and forest product collection, and therefore may face conflict with predators. The direct impacts of predator conflict (i.e., injury/death of livestock/humans) have been widely researched, however, it is the indirect impacts (e.g., fear, stress, sleep deprivation, increased disease vulnerability, family dynamics, and time/effort of pursuing compensation), that have received little attention on general. Further, within human-wildlife conflict (HWC) literature there seems to be an underlying assumption that research participants are able to correctly identify the wildlife species that they are reporting caused both direct and …

Evacuation In Ireland: The Experience Of Evacuees In ÉIre And Northern Ireland During The Second World War, Darby Kay Ward May 2019

Evacuation In Ireland: The Experience Of Evacuees In ÉIre And Northern Ireland During The Second World War, Darby Kay Ward

All Theses

This thesis examines civilian evacuations in Ireland during the Second World War. Factors, such as Éire’s policy of neutrality, Anglo-Irish political tensions, and the relationship between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, created a complex wartime environment in Ireland, which made the evacuations that took place there distinct from those in Britain. The primary focus of this thesis is government-sponsored evacuation from Great Britain to Ireland, and from the cities of Belfast and Londonderry to the countryside of Ireland. Its aim is to place these evacuations, which have been neglected by the historiographical record, in the context of government evacuation …
