Those Who Spectate Are Bound To Murder, Kaitlyn Michelle Samons May 2020

Those Who Spectate Are Bound To Murder, Kaitlyn Michelle Samons

All Theses

This thesis is a criticism of chroniclers. As is said at the end of the introduction, this research not only criticizes poor investigative work (whether it be intentionally malicious, or simply lazy) from the past, but also reinforces a standard of expectation for those who wish to go into any field of research and/or writing. As writers are the last defense against the erasure of history, it stands to measure that there should be a higher expectation of those of them granted the authority to chronicle history. However, it is obvious based on the case studies of Native American lynchings …

A Crash Course In Liberal Education: An Analysis Of Civically Engaged Edutainment Videos, Caitlin Marie Lancaster Anderson May 2020

A Crash Course In Liberal Education: An Analysis Of Civically Engaged Edutainment Videos, Caitlin Marie Lancaster Anderson

All Theses

Crash Course is an entertainment education YouTube channel that was founded on principles that align closely with that of liberal education. Liberal education is a model of education dedicated to broad knowledge, specific intellectual and practical skills, and personal and social responsibility, most notably civic engagement. Despite the value derived from liberal education, it is facing a crisis where it is replaced at the university level by neoliberalism, an ideology dominated by workforce performativity and individualism. Using Michel Foucault’s power/knowledge concept, this thesis examines the neoliberal shift in education as a crisis of power and explores how liberal education is …

Defending The Dead: A Critical And Creative Exploration Of The Eulogy, Dan Leach May 2020

Defending The Dead: A Critical And Creative Exploration Of The Eulogy, Dan Leach

All Theses

Abstract

Two components make up this thesis—a critical essay that analyzes the mode of the eulogy in William Apess’s “Eulogy on King Philip;” and a creative excerpt from a novel-in-progress titled The Eulogist. Though distinct and self-standing as respective projects, both components reflect my continued interest in intersections of language and memory, in addition to connections between function and form.

In “Here Am I: The Disruptive Presence in William Apess’s ‘Eulogy on King Philip’,” I analyze the ways in which Apess’s visual and sonic presence might be understood as instruments of resistance in his larger anti-colonial project. In particular, I …

Limb Bone Strains During Climbing In Green Iguanas: Testing Biomechanical Release As A Mechanism Promoting Morphological Transitions In Arboreal Vertebrates, Victor David Munteanu May 2020

Limb Bone Strains During Climbing In Green Iguanas: Testing Biomechanical Release As A Mechanism Promoting Morphological Transitions In Arboreal Vertebrates, Victor David Munteanu

All Theses

Across vertebrate diversity, limb bone morphology is typically expected to reflect differences in the habitats and functional tasks with which species contend. Arboreal vertebrates are often recognized to have longer limbs than terrestrial relatives, a feature thought to help extend the reach of limbs across gaps between branches. Among terrestrial vertebrates, longer limbs can experience greater bending moments that might expose bones to a greater risk of failure. However, changes in habitat or behavior can impose changes in the forces that bones experience. If locomotion imposed lower loads in trees than on the ground, such a release from loading demands …

Microbiological Safety Of Halal Beef In The United States, Omar Ahmed Al-Mahmood May 2020

Microbiological Safety Of Halal Beef In The United States, Omar Ahmed Al-Mahmood

All Dissertations

Halal foods, foods permissible per Islamic law, are a fast-growing segment of the global food industry. Most microbiological evidence about halal foods is from studies conducted in Muslim-majority countries not western (Muslim-minority) countries. We aimed to determine the microbiological quality of halal beef at both slaughter and retail in the southeastern United States as well as explore the role of Halal Certifying Bodies (HCBs) in overseeing implementation of food safety practices. The study was informed by two main hypotheses: (1) microbial load will be lower in the post-evisceration slaughter stage of beef carcass samples; (2) indicator organisms will be higher …

Exploiting Latent Features Of Text And Graphs, Justin George Sybrandt May 2020

Exploiting Latent Features Of Text And Graphs, Justin George Sybrandt

All Dissertations

As the size and scope of online data continues to grow, new machine learning techniques become necessary to best capitalize on the wealth of available information. However, the models that help convert data into knowledge require nontrivial processes to make sense of large collections of text and massive online graphs. In both scenarios, modern machine learning pipelines produce embeddings --- semantically rich vectors of latent features --- to convert human constructs for machine understanding. In this dissertation we focus on information available within biomedical science, including human-written abstracts of scientific papers, as well as machine-generated graphs of biomedical entity relationships. …

Using A Bayesian Framework To Develop 3d Gestural Input Systems Based On Expertise And Exposure In Anesthesia, Katherina Ann Jurewicz May 2020

Using A Bayesian Framework To Develop 3d Gestural Input Systems Based On Expertise And Exposure In Anesthesia, Katherina Ann Jurewicz

All Dissertations

Interactions with a keyboard and mouse fall short of human capabilities and what is lacking in the technological revolution is a surge of new and natural ways of interacting with computers. In-air gestures are a promising input modality as they are expressive, easy to use, quick to use, and natural for users. It is known that gestural systems should be developed within a particular context as gesture choice is dependent on the context; however, there is little research investigating other individual factors which may influence gesture choice such as expertise and exposure. Anesthesia providers’ hands have been linked to bacterial …

Rhetorical Invention In A 21st Century Technoculture: A New Ludic Framework For Learning, Christopher Michael Stuart

All Dissertations

This dissertation proposes the ludic framework for learning as an innovative pedagogical model that privileges play, possibility, failure, and social affinity as states of being and positions for learning. The ludic framework works through rhetorics of play as a frame of reference; rhetorics of possibility and invention as a means of production; the acceptance of transformative failure; and engages with digital communities to further knowledge through social affinity while being grounded in constructionist learning theories. The principles that facilitate this are: curiosity, play, flexibility, metacognition, collaboration, invention, persistence, and creativity. To demonstrate this, the dissertation has two case studies: a …

An Investigation Of The Applicability Of The Uses And Gratifications Theory For Providing Insight Into E-Tourists’ Use Of Smartphones, Jang-Won Moon

All Dissertations

Despite the previous smartphone research in the context of travel and tourism, there is limited research based on a strong theoretical background that seeks to understand how tourists are motivated and satisfied via smartphone use. This study extended previous studies by systematically investigating and quantitatively measuring how and to what extent tourists are gratified (satisfied) by the use of smartphones during their trips based on the Uses and Gratifications Theory.

According to this theory, individuals choose a media platform with the anticipation that it will aid them in realizing a specific intention, the satisfaction of this need being referred to …

A Computational Framework For Axisymmetric Linear Elasticity And Parallel Iterative Solvers For Two-Phase Navier–Stokes, Alistair R. Bentley May 2020

A Computational Framework For Axisymmetric Linear Elasticity And Parallel Iterative Solvers For Two-Phase Navier–Stokes, Alistair R. Bentley

All Dissertations

This dissertation explores ways to improve the computational efficiency of linear elasticity and the variable density/viscosity Navier--Stokes equations. While the approaches explored for these two problems are much different in nature, the end goal is the same - to reduce the computational effort required to form reliable numerical approximations.\\

The first topic considered is the axisymmetric linear elasticity problem. While the linear elasticity problem has been studied extensively in the finite-element literature, to the author's knowledge, this is the first study of the elasticity problem in an axisymmetric setting. Indeed, the axisymmetric nature of the problem means that a change …

Predictive Models For Pulmonary Artery Size In Fontan Patients, Akash Gupta, Chris Gillett, Patrick Gerard, Michael M.H. Cheung, Jonathan P. Mynard, Ethan Kung Apr 2020

Predictive Models For Pulmonary Artery Size In Fontan Patients, Akash Gupta, Chris Gillett, Patrick Gerard, Michael M.H. Cheung, Jonathan P. Mynard, Ethan Kung

Publications

We developed models of pulmonary artery (PA) size in Fontan patients as a function of age and body surface area (BSA) using linear regression and breakpoint analyses based on data from 43 Fontan patients divided into two groups: the extracardiac conduit (ECC) group (n = 24) and the non-ECC group (n = 19). Model predictions were compared against those of a non-Fontan control group (n = 18) and published literature. We observed strong positive correlations of the mean PA diameter with BSA (r = 0.9, p < 0.05) and age (r = 0.88, p < 0.05) in the ECC group. The absolute percentage differences between our BSA and age model predictions against published literature were less than 16% and 20%, respectively. Predicted PA size for Fontan patients was consistently smaller than the control group. These models may serve as useful references for clinicians and be utilized to construct 3D anatomic models that correspond to patient body size or age.

Perceptions And Determinants Of Partnership Trust In The Context Of Community-Based Participatory Research, Arelis Moore De Peralta, Julie Smithwick, Myriam E. Torres

Publications

Trust is difficult to conceptualize and define because of its diverse applications in different disciplines. Historic mistrust between vulnerable communities and researchers based on past adverse experiences can negatively affect the ability to collaborate and conduct effective research with such populations. Community Based-Participatory Research (CBPR) is a collaborative approach to research that can reduce historic mistrust and health disparities among minority populations. Although how trust development occurs in CBPR partnerships has been explored, there is a need to determine how to move from one stage to the next in fostering and maintaining that trust. The present study contributes to this …

Participants participated in pre and post belief exercises and pre and post online surveys. We examined differences between PSTs’ beliefs over the course of three time points. Overall, findings revealed that after self-reflection, strategy instruction, and engagement in writing, PSTs were more likely to believe in children’s writing capabilities, reported higher confidence …

Increasing Diversity And Inclusion Through Mentoring Underrepresented Groups, Corban Williams Mar 2020

Increasing Diversity And Inclusion Through Mentoring Underrepresented Groups, Corban Williams

The Professional Constructor

The Construction Industry historically has struggled to gain traction with underrepresented groups, such as women, African-Americans, and the Hispanic/ Latinx community. To combat this, industry-wide action is necessary to increase diversity and inclusion. Underrepresented communities have misconceptions about the construction industry including a lack of knowledge about the wide range of possible careers. By the AGC establishing a mentoring program with career goals and psychological attributes for grades 6-12 and college students, a positive dialog about the industry would be established. Visibility and promotion of the program would encourage students of underrepresented communities to consider a career in the construction …
