Identity Negotiation Of Pre-Service Teachers Of English As A Foreign Language, Hazel Vega, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens Jun 2020

Identity Negotiation Of Pre-Service Teachers Of English As A Foreign Language, Hazel Vega, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens

Publications

The study of teacher identity has gained prominence in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching. However, the construction of EFL teacher identity is underresearched, particularly how teachers navigate dominant discourses around native non-native speakers. This paper presents a qualitative study examining four pre-service teachers in an EFL education program. Grounded in the community of practice identity negotiation framework, results suggest that EFL pre-service teachers’ processes of identity negotiation mainly resided somewhere between adoption and rejection of legitimate practices in the EFL teacher community, in what we call a zone of tension. The findings of this research indicate that pre-service …

Sovereign Immunity Issues For Tech Transfer Programs At State Universities, Agnes Gambill May 2020

Sovereign Immunity Issues For Tech Transfer Programs At State Universities, Agnes Gambill

Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association

Technology transfer is the process of transforming research and ideas into viable commercial opportunities. Notable examples of tech transfer include Google, artificial intelligence, life-saving vaccines, and renewable energy technology. Universities and colleges play an important role in the technology transfer process, ranging from brokering commercial partnerships, negotiating license agreements, and protecting intellectual property. Valuable patents are often at stake, and as a result, universities should anticipate litigation risks. State universities, in particular, face new and unusual challenges as a result of their status as state entities. Under the 11th Amendment, state universities, as an arm of the state, can claim …

Patent And Trademark Resource Center Websites: A Content Analysis, Jared Hoppenfeld May 2020

Patent And Trademark Resource Center Websites: A Content Analysis, Jared Hoppenfeld

Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association

Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRCs) serve as an off-site connection to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Approximately 85 PTRCs exist to assist inventors, entrepreneurs, and researchers by providing facilities, resources, and expertise. Most of these libraries also have a website which, in addition to USPTO webpages, serves as a gateway to the world of patent and trademark research. These websites provide access to various resources while also functioning as an outreach tool to the public.

This study included a content analysis of 79 websites belonging to PTRC libraries. After a literature review of other website studies, …

Technical Standards And A Theory Of Writing As Infrastructure, Jordan Frith May 2020

Technical Standards And A Theory Of Writing As Infrastructure, Jordan Frith

Publications

Infrastructures support and shape our social world, but they do so in often invisible ways. In few cases is that truer than with various documents that serve infrastructural functions. This article takes one type of those documents—technical standards—and uses analysis of one specific standard to develop theory related to the infrastructural function of writing. The author specifically analyzes one of the major infrastructures of the Internet of Things—the 126-page Tag Data Standard (TDS)—to show how rethinking writing as infrastructure can be valuable for multiple conversations occurring with writing studies, including research on material rhetoric, research that expands the scope of …

Exploring The Relation Between Religiosity And Sexual Health Outcomes, Kayla Weston May 2020

Exploring The Relation Between Religiosity And Sexual Health Outcomes, Kayla Weston

All Dissertations

Despite a decline in adolescent fertility rates in the United States, unplanned pregnancy rates remain among the highest in the developed world and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise. With U.S. sexuality education remaining inconsistent, exploring other platforms, such as religious institutions, to make an impression about sexuality on young people may provide an additional strategy to further reduce unplanned pregnancies and prevent the spread of STIs. While prior research has demonstrated links between religiosity and sexual health, a gap exists with respect to influences that may mediate the relation between religiosity and experiencing STIs and unplanned pregnancy. …

Living And Working On The Peninsula: A Study Of Spatial Home And Work Location Relationships As Related To Occupations And Charleston's Historic Landscape At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Kayleigh Anne Defenbaugh May 2020

Living And Working On The Peninsula: A Study Of Spatial Home And Work Location Relationships As Related To Occupations And Charleston's Historic Landscape At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Kayleigh Anne Defenbaugh

All Theses

The spatial living and working patterns of Charleston’s grocers, dry goods store owners, attorneys, physicians, conductors, and teachers between 1890 and 1910 reflect the city’s historic land use and cultural norms. Tense race relations left their mark on every part of the city’s history – including work and educational opportunities. This, in turn, further added to the physical barriers enacted as a result of the divisive Jim Crow Laws of the era.

This thesis uses GIS-mapped work and home addresses of grocers, dry goods store owners, attorneys, physicians, conductors, and teachers in 1890, 1900, and 1910 to both visually illustrate …

Marie's Knowing Winks: Ironic Play, Courtly Love, And The Disruption Of Generic Conventions In Chaitivel, Lanva, And Yonec, Anna Lia Johnson May 2020

Marie's Knowing Winks: Ironic Play, Courtly Love, And The Disruption Of Generic Conventions In Chaitivel, Lanva, And Yonec, Anna Lia Johnson

All Theses

While readers such as M. L. Stapleton and K. Sarah-Jane Murray have devoted time to the courtly and Ovidian play in Marie de France’s Guigemar and Laüstic, less attention has been paid to that within Chaitivel, Lanva and Yonec. In this essay, I argue that Marie slyly mocks the subgenre within which she operates: she both participates in and pushes against the constraints of fin’amors, or courtly love. In her twelfth-century version of Ovidian one-upmanship, Marie pulls tales from Celtic and classical sources, redresses them with the accoutrements of courtly love, and inserts her own wry …

Religious Openness To Secularism (Rose): Effect Of Cognitive Style On Defensiveness And Religiosity, Randle Aaron Molina Villanueva May 2020

Religious Openness To Secularism (Rose): Effect Of Cognitive Style On Defensiveness And Religiosity, Randle Aaron Molina Villanueva

All Theses

Within the United States, there is an observable phenomenon that for many individuals Christianity and secularism are two incompatible and opposed rationalities. However, there is currently no conclusive evidence to explain the resultant conflict between religion and science. The current project aimed to establish causal relationships between analytical thinking and religiosity and build an explanatory model with defensiveness against secularism as the mediator for this association. Religious individuals reject secularism because they see it as a threat to their religious belief, value systems, and society at large. They perceive secularism as an abject rejection of those religious values they hold …

A Slow And Spectacular Violence: Anti-Black, Environmental, And Labor Violence In Muriel Rukeyser’S The Book Of The Dead, Kaitlyn Michelle Samons May 2020

A Slow And Spectacular Violence: Anti-Black, Environmental, And Labor Violence In Muriel Rukeyser’S The Book Of The Dead, Kaitlyn Michelle Samons

All Theses

In 1931, between 700 and 800 West Virginian miners died from “acute silicosis,” a lung disorder caused by prolonged exposure to silica dust. This event was dubbed “The Hawk’s Nest Tragedy.” The Hawk’s Nest Tragedy violence was best captured by Muriel Rukeyser in her collection of poems, The Book of the Dead. The poems within The Book of the Dead are separate from the perspectives of the victims who have died, but also currently serve as some of the few possible lenses for these victims to be remembered. Using Rukeyser’s work, this thesis will explore a single, central, question: …

Learning Styles Of Undergraduate Construction Management Students And Their Impact On Best Practices For Online Education, Robert Dawson Coffey May 2020

Learning Styles Of Undergraduate Construction Management Students And Their Impact On Best Practices For Online Education, Robert Dawson Coffey

All Theses

Construction Science and Management (CSM) students at Clemson University took a self-assessment survey to determine their preferred learning style to determine if their preferred learning style is correlated to their GPA. Also, both CSM students and instructors took a survey on course methodology to determine if their perceptions of course methodology were congruent. The results of these surveys and subsequent analyses were insignificant, and because of their insignificance, they did not factor into best practice recommendations for online course design and delivery for construction management. The greatest contributing factors for best practices in online course delivery in construction management came …

Something I Don't Know: Stories About Being Human, Robert Welborn May 2020

Something I Don't Know: Stories About Being Human, Robert Welborn

All Theses

This thesis consists of two components: one critical and one creative. The critical component traces the differing approaches in which contemporary fiction successfully reflects the human experience, particularly concerning the breakdown of relationships. By focusing on the realism of Amy Hempel and speculative fiction of Kristen Roupenian and Karen Russell, I examine the multiple ways in which short fiction can achieve that goal. The creative—and primary—component consists of a collection of short stories, entitled Something I Don’t Know. These stories are my effort to explore the same truths as the aforementioned authors, while employing the various methods discussed.

“It's Not Cramps...That's Not Normal”: A Qualitative Study On Endometriosis Diagnosis, Kayla Ashley Craig May 2020

“It's Not Cramps...That's Not Normal”: A Qualitative Study On Endometriosis Diagnosis, Kayla Ashley Craig

All Theses

This is a qualitative study, regarding women with the chronic pain condition endometriosis, utilizing in-depth interviews. Endometriosis is a chronic pain condition in which the tissue of the uterus is found outside the uterine cavern. This tissue leads to many symptoms that can affect a woman’s social, personal, and professional life. Guiding literature on the history of women’s health, validation through diagnosis, patient-provider relationships, social support, and dialogism in health communication were used to inform this research. A narrative analysis approach was used to analyze the findings which consisted of four narratives: manifestations of pain, social support, patient-provider communication and …

The Bricks Of St. Michael's Church And Pompion Hill Chapel: A Historic And Scientific Study, Tanesha Joi High May 2020

The Bricks Of St. Michael's Church And Pompion Hill Chapel: A Historic And Scientific Study, Tanesha Joi High

All Theses

Millions of tourists flock to Charleston, SC each year to visit the self-titled “most historic city in America,” without encountering the city’s full history. Racism, lack of historic documentation, and indifference omit the stories of Black people, both free and enslaved, from the popular history told about the creation of Charleston. Their historic absence has left researchers and scholars to read between the lines of primary sources and find new tools and methods to gather the information needed to create a more accurate and nuanced picture of the lives of Charleston’s enslaved. This thesis explores whether Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry …

Computational Configurations: Behind The Bricolage Of The Truelist, Emma Jayne Stanley May 2020

Computational Configurations: Behind The Bricolage Of The Truelist, Emma Jayne Stanley

All Theses

Nick Montfort’s book of computational poetry, The Truelist, allows the reader to understand the code written by Montfort to produce the book as both “bricoleur” and “bricolage.” At the core of my examination, I will ask: how does computational poetry, specifically that of The Truelist, provide us with a new definition of what it means to embody a coded space, specifically a space that, according to Montfort, is constantly redefining itself for new readers? To focus specifically on examining the literariness of the text, I will primarily use Jacques Derrida’s concept of the “bricolage” from “Structure, Sign, and …

How The Tiger Keeps Its Stripes: A Case Study Of Black Student Involvement And Retention At Clemson University, Sherman Jones May 2020

How The Tiger Keeps Its Stripes: A Case Study Of Black Student Involvement And Retention At Clemson University, Sherman Jones

All Theses

This manuscript documents and elaborates upon a creative project thesis that used documentary filmmaking to explore organizational involvement and black student retention at Clemson University. The produced docuseries contains five episodes of student and faculty interviews about their experiences at Clemson. This manuscript expands upon the documentary by discussing Clemson University’s general and racial history, as well as academic literature on student involvement, critical race theory, and documentary research. Due to my own involvement and experiences as a black student at Clemson, my positionality is incorporated throughout the project. This manuscript concludes with an overview of project content and an …

Delineating The Relationship Between Cardiovascular Physiology And Subject Characteristics Using Computational Modeling And Systemic Review, Aseem Pradhan May 2020

Delineating The Relationship Between Cardiovascular Physiology And Subject Characteristics Using Computational Modeling And Systemic Review, Aseem Pradhan

All Theses

Lumped Parameter Networks (LPN) are computational models that can capture the systemic responses of the cardiovascular system. An LPN describes the systemic behavior by providing outputs such as the blood pressure, flowrate, and heart chamber volume at the points defined in the network. To use the LPN for medical applications, it needs to provide output values that represent the physiology of realistic subjects. The cardiovascular system exhibits short-term and long-term adaptations to factors such as aging, weight gain, exercise, etc. Therefore, subject characteristics such as age, height, weight, etc. affect the output values of the LPN. Current literature reports the …

Routes To Deliverance: The Development Of Social Mobility Among East African Slave Porters By Way Of Missionary Caravans, 1877-1906., Katherine Jean Allen May 2020

Routes To Deliverance: The Development Of Social Mobility Among East African Slave Porters By Way Of Missionary Caravans, 1877-1906., Katherine Jean Allen

All Theses

This thesis examines British missionary caravans in nineteenth-century East Africa. Through the utilization of enslaved porters from the island of Zanzibar, enslaved people were able to garner autonomy. The primary focus of this thesis is to examine the ways British missionaries inadvertently provided routes to social mobility and manumission to enslaved peoples. Its aim is to place this ironic phenomenon in conversation with historiographical claims that porters were not slave labor as well as postulating that enslaved people were agents of their own social mobility and manumission.

Guard Your Heart, “By Force, If Necessary”: Faith, Virginity, And Shame In The Evangelical Purity Movement, Kelley M. Gillis May 2020

Guard Your Heart, “By Force, If Necessary”: Faith, Virginity, And Shame In The Evangelical Purity Movement, Kelley M. Gillis

All Theses

In the 1990s and 2000s, American evangelical church culture experienced a shift in its sex education methodology. Known as the purity movement, or purity culture, teachings about sex and dating became inextricably linked to fear and shame. Emerging from this movement in 1997 was a 21-year-old named Joshua Harris. According to Harris, it was not enough to declare a life of abstinence if true holiness were to be achieved. As he declared in his purity manifesto I Kissed Dating Goodbye, one needed to completely renounce dating altogether. The book outlines what a pure life looks like for Christian youth with …

The Impact Of Self-Regulated Strategy Development On The Expository Writing Performance Of High School Students At-Risk For Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Simone Elyse Adams May 2020

The Impact Of Self-Regulated Strategy Development On The Expository Writing Performance Of High School Students At-Risk For Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Simone Elyse Adams

All Dissertations

High school students at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) experience academic difficulties and gaps in achievement in writing. Research has indicated that evidence-based practices (EBP) are needed to address their writing deficits. Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is considered an evidence-based writing practice for students with disabilities. Although SRSD is an evidence-based practice, there is a lack of research investigating SRSD for high school students at-risk for EBD. This multiprobe multiple baseline study investigated the impact SRSD has on the expository writing performance and writing self-efficacy of high school students at-risk for EBD. Results revealed that students’ writing performance …

The Trump Effect And The Damage Done: A Mixed Methods Study Exploring Sociopolitical Hostility And Teacher Responses In Language Classrooms, Stephanie M. Madison

All Dissertations

Immediately following the 2016 election, teachers reported a previously-unseen level of animosity from their students mimicking the rhetoric of President Trump, often verbatim. The combination of racial, ethnic, religious, and bias-motivated bullying and language has been referred to as the “Trump Effect” in the media and among educators (Nygreen, Lazdowski, & Bialostok, 2017). While teachers in all subject areas may have the potential to address this dehumanizing rhetoric, this study focused on foreign/world language (FL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), which are areas that have not been thoroughly explored as a particularly important and relevant site for …

Soundscapes For Social Change: Community And Consciousness Through Sound Design Rhetorics, Amy Patterson May 2020

Soundscapes For Social Change: Community And Consciousness Through Sound Design Rhetorics, Amy Patterson

All Dissertations

By applying a “sound-mapping” methodology that incorporates qualitative interviews and field research, I argue that theater sound design provides new means to connect sonic rhetorics with social change. I examine theater sound design as an ecological composing practice that lends itself to empathy, community, action, and pedagogy; and further argue that there is rhetorical potential in what I call “soundscapes for social change,” a concept that encourages sonic agency and sound as contemporary resistance. The theater setting introduces sound and vibration experiences carefully calculated and developed to impact a variety of audiences and stir their imaginations through sensory experiences, accessed …

Finding The Ephemeral: Aura, Apperception, And Digitally-Mediated Music, Rodger Eugene Bishop May 2020

Finding The Ephemeral: Aura, Apperception, And Digitally-Mediated Music, Rodger Eugene Bishop

All Theses

This paper attends the live music performance in the 21st century to reconsider German philosopher Walter Benjamin’s theses on the authenticity of art in his 1935 essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.” Benjamin focuses on the emergent technology of photography in the 20th century as a method of technical reproduction of the art object, and, as he indicates, as having “captured a place of its own among the artistic processes” (219-20). Benjamin proposes several theories on the mechanical reproducibility and distribution of art within the culture industry, and his attention to the aura of the …

"A Dream Deferred": The Desegregation And Integration Of Clemson Athletics, Luke A. Ekstrom May 2020

"A Dream Deferred": The Desegregation And Integration Of Clemson Athletics, Luke A. Ekstrom

All Theses

Although Clemson University’s first African-American student, Harvey Gantt,

was admitted in 1963, the first African-American athlete did not sign with Clemson until

1969. This thesis assesses the years leading up to athletic desegregation at Clemson

University, and explores the alleged barriers to the successful recruitment of African-

American athletes at Clemson. While there were legitimate obstacles to signing African-

American athletes, such as the academic standards of the Atlantic Coast Conference and

the personal preference of African-Americans choosing to go elsewhere, I argue that

these barriers alone were insufficient to preclude the signing of an African-American

athlete. Despite the open …
