Pueblo Pequeño, Infierno Grande: Shifting The Burden Of Latinx Spanish Teacher Retention In The Rural South, Cornelia V. Okraski, Stephanie M. Madison

Publications

This study explored the experiences of five Latinx Spanish teachers who worked in schools in rural North Carolina and South Carolina. Using data from 25 semistructured interviews and publicly available school/community demographic information, this qualitative multiple‐case study sought to answer the following questions: (a) How do Latinx Spanish teachers in the rural South perceive experiences that help or hinder retention? (b) In what ways are Latinx Spanish teachers navigating their role as advocates for linguistic and cultural diversity in their rural schools and communities? Findings showed that participants were constantly balancing the benefits and challenges of their work in a …

Illuminating The Naturalistic Decision-Making Processes Of Anesthesia Providers To Inform Medication Error-Reducing Interventions, Joshua Michael Biro Aug 2020

Illuminating The Naturalistic Decision-Making Processes Of Anesthesia Providers To Inform Medication Error-Reducing Interventions, Joshua Michael Biro

All Theses

Medication errors in anesthesia are prevalent and efforts to address medication errors bring with them new potential avenues of failure, especially when the work system and ‘work as done’ are not considered in the design of the intervention. I employed two methodologies in interviews of anesthesia providers to help further understand the context of anesthesia ‘work as done’ to inform the design of future medication error-reducing interventions. Results of the first interview methodology, the critical decision method, revealed a diverse array of challenging scenarios in which ‘work as done’ often deviates from ‘work as imagined.’ Results of the second interview …

Evaluation Of Tablet Chlorinator For A Rural Haitian Water Treatment System—Computational Modeling And Laboratory Testing, Ashley Caroline Martin Aug 2020

Evaluation Of Tablet Chlorinator For A Rural Haitian Water Treatment System—Computational Modeling And Laboratory Testing, Ashley Caroline Martin

All Theses

In today’s world, 844 million people lack a basic water service and 2.1 billion lack accessible, readily available, and clean water on the premises of their home (UN-Water, 2018). Data show that rural areas of developing countries like Haiti are far behind the rest of the world when it comes to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure (Joint Monitoring Progamme (JMP), 2017a). Treating water in this context comes with many challenges; however, chlorination using calcium hypochlorite tablets proves to be a suitable solution as tablets are effective, inexpensive, and simple to use. Calcium hypochlorite systems have been in service for …

Effects Of Self-Monitoring On The Self-Determination Of Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In A Post-Secondary Educational Setting, Kristina Nicole Randall Aug 2020

Effects Of Self-Monitoring On The Self-Determination Of Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In A Post-Secondary Educational Setting, Kristina Nicole Randall

All Dissertations

Increased self-determination skills are critical in improving life outcomes for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). The recent growth of post-secondary education settings for those with IDD have provided an additional setting in which self-determination skills should be taught. Using a multiple-baseline single case research design, the researcher examined a self-determination choice-making curriculum along with the use of a self-monitoring checklist to increase self-determination skills for individuals with IDD who attend a post-secondary educational setting. Data were analyzed using visual analysis and repeated measures ANOVAS. Results indicated that the overall points exceeding the median (PEM) of the intervention was …

Using Incremental Rehearsal For Subtraction Fact Fluency Among Elementary Students With Mathematics Difficulties, Friggita Johnson Aug 2020

Using Incremental Rehearsal For Subtraction Fact Fluency Among Elementary Students With Mathematics Difficulties, Friggita Johnson

All Dissertations

Students with or at-risk of learning disabilities in mathematics often experience working memory deficits that interfere with long-term retention of facts. Fact fluency reduces the cognitive demand on working memory to allow allocation of cognitive resources for processing more complex tasks. The current study used a single-case, multiple-baseline design to investigate the effectiveness of incremental rehearsal, an evidence-based drill-and-practice strategy, in improving subtraction fact fluency among elementary students with mathematics difficulties. Participants (N = 4) were three third-grade students and one fourth-grade student either with a formal diagnosis of learning disabilities in mathematics or low performing in mathematics without an …

A Model Of Understanding Choice Of University By International Students: A Two-Case Study, Shuiping Jiang Aug 2020

A Model Of Understanding Choice Of University By International Students: A Two-Case Study, Shuiping Jiang

All Dissertations

Students from all over the world who study in the United States contribute to the economy, participate in scientific and technical research, foster a diverse campus environment, enrich the learning environment with cultural perspectives, and help prepare domestic students for global careers, which often lead to long-term business relationships. However, in the United States, higher education institutions are facing ever-increasing challenges in enrolling international students. In the past three years, many universities faced difficulties in increasing or maintaining international student enrollment, forcing colleges and universities to search for the most effective ways to attract international students with limited resources. This …

Pattern Formation And Elastocapillary Instabilities In Soft Gels, Xingchen Shao Aug 2020

Pattern Formation And Elastocapillary Instabilities In Soft Gels, Xingchen Shao

All Dissertations

Hydrogels are complex materials that are typically utilized as bioinks in the emerging 3D bioprinting technology. Gels are distinguished by an elasticity that introduces complexity into the pinch-off process. The distinguishing feature of soft gels is that capillarity (surface tension) and elasticity are comparable which can induce an abundance of new phenomena in the elastocapillary regime. Unfortunately, elastocapillary instabilities are not fully understood because classical theories of fluid mechanics and solid mechanics can not capture the crossover between capillary-dominated and elasticity-dominated dynamics. Herein, elastocapillary surface phenomena on hydrogels are experimentally characterized and new theoretical models are proposed to interpret the …

Effects Of A Small-Group Vocabulary Intervention With And Without Extended Instruction On Word Learning Skills Of At-Risk Kindergarten Students, Jill C. Shelnut Aug 2020

Effects Of A Small-Group Vocabulary Intervention With And Without Extended Instruction On Word Learning Skills Of At-Risk Kindergarten Students, Jill C. Shelnut

All Dissertations

Vocabulary instruction is often overlooked in preschool and kindergarten. However, the positive impacts of having a strong foundation in vocabulary spill over into children’s later schooling, improving their reading comprehension. Promising effects of audio prompted delivery of vocabulary instruction via storybooks for young children have been reported. For children at-risk for disabilities, from low socio-economic status, or English Language Learners, novel words are not learned incidentally. The present study examined the impact of extended teacher instruction delivered in conjunction with a small-group, automated, vocabulary intervention in classrooms with at-risk kindergarten children. Thirty-seven children were identified by nine classroom teachers as …

Investigating Obfuscation As A Tool To Enhance Photo Privacy On Social Networks Sites, Yifang Li Aug 2020

Investigating Obfuscation As A Tool To Enhance Photo Privacy On Social Networks Sites, Yifang Li

All Dissertations

Photos which contain rich visual information can be a source of privacy issues. Some privacy issues associated with photos include identification of people, inference attacks, location disclosure, and sensitive information leakage. However, photo privacy is often hard to achieve because the content in the photos is both what makes them valuable to viewers, and what causes privacy concerns.

Photo sharing often occurs via Social Network Sites (SNSs). Photo privacy is difficult to achieve via SNSs due to two main reasons: first, SNSs seldom notify users of the sensitive content in their photos that might cause privacy leakage; second, the recipient …

A Survey Of Changepoint Techniques For Time Series Data, Xueheng Shi Aug 2020

A Survey Of Changepoint Techniques For Time Series Data, Xueheng Shi

All Dissertations

Changepoint analysis has played an important role in modern time series study. Detection of changepoints helps modelling and prediction of time series and is found in applications of many fields. This dissertation focuses on the detection of mean structure changes in correlated time series. It consists of the results of three research projects on changepoint problems: (1) the comparison of changepoint techniques; (2) autocovariance estimation of an AR(p) time series with changepoints; and (3) L1-regularization in changepoint analysis.

In chapter 2 the single changepoint techniques, or At-Most-One-Changepoint (AMOC) tests are reviewed. A new AMOC test, Sum of Squared CUSUMz is …

Going Through The Motions: Participation In Interpreter-Mediated Meeting Interaction Under A Deaf And A Hearing Chairperson, Rosie Henley, Rachel Mckee Jul 2020

Going Through The Motions: Participation In Interpreter-Mediated Meeting Interaction Under A Deaf And A Hearing Chairperson, Rosie Henley, Rachel Mckee

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In multiparty meetings involving deaf and hearing participants, sign language interpreters are tasked to render talk ‘accessible’ to all by mediating differences across languages, modalities, interactional norms, and cultural statuses (Roy, 1989, 1993; Mindess, 1999; Van Herreweghe, 2002). Although this context of work is relatively common for interpreters, their practices and the interactional outcomes for participants are under-researched. This case study compares chairing and meeting practices under a deaf chairperson and a hearing chairperson, respectively. The impact of chairing on interpretability and deaf participation are discussed. An interactional sociolinguistics framework informs analysis of meeting data and retrospective participant interviews. Analysis …

Toward Standard Interpreter Education Program Admission Criteria, Marc Holmes Jul 2020

Toward Standard Interpreter Education Program Admission Criteria, Marc Holmes

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In the United States, signed language interpreter education programs (IEPs) must strike a balance between attracting a sufficient number of students and admitting only high-quality applicants who possess foundational language skills, can graduate in a timely manner and acquire professional credentials expediently. The Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (2014) asserts that all students entering U.S. IEPs should have strong language skills in both American Sign Language(ASL)and English before beginning to acquire interpreting skills. One way to measure a student’s readiness to enter a program of instruction is through the use of admission criteria. I examined online documents and surveyed52 baccalaureate-granting IEPs in …

An Achilles’ Heel? Helping Interpreting Students Gain Greater Awareness Of Literal And Idiomatic English, Ineke Crezee, Lynn E. Grant Jul 2020

An Achilles’ Heel? Helping Interpreting Students Gain Greater Awareness Of Literal And Idiomatic English, Ineke Crezee, Lynn E. Grant

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This research paper reports on a study involving the use of literal and non-literal or idiomatic language in a multilingual interpreter classroom. Previous research has shown that interpreters are not always able to identify and correctly interpret idiomatic language. This study first examined student interpreters’ perceptions of the importance of idiomatic language, then followed by assessing their ability to identify phrases that were literal, idiomatic or both. Lastly it looked at student interpreters’ ability to correctly identify and explain idioms in short phrases and dialogues. Findings showed that, after this exercise, students' awareness of the difference between literal and non-literal …

Spoken Language Interpreters Andsigned Language Interpreters: Towards Cross-Fertilization, Daniel Gile, Jemina M. Napier Jul 2020

Spoken Language Interpreters Andsigned Language Interpreters: Towards Cross-Fertilization, Daniel Gile, Jemina M. Napier

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This commentary aims to give an overview of developments in the related fields of spoken and signed language interpreting, with consideration given to professionalization, standards, education and training, and research. We base our discussion on our observations of the changing nature of the sister professions over the years, as the two related fields become more closely aligned. We propose that spoken and signed language interpreters can work more closely together to promote more cross-fertilization in interpreting studies.
