Supernova Reverse Shocks: Sic Growth And Isotopic Composition, Ethan A-N. Deneault, Donald D. Clayton, Alexander Heger
Supernova Reverse Shocks: Sic Growth And Isotopic Composition, Ethan A-N. Deneault, Donald D. Clayton, Alexander Heger
Publications
We present new mechanisms by which the isotopic compositions of X-type grains of presolar SiC are altered by reverse shocks in Type II supernovae. We address three epochs of reverse shocks: pressure wave from the H envelope near t ¼ 106 s, reverse shock from the presupernova wind near 108–109 s, and reverse shock from the interstellar medium near 1010 s. Using one-dimensional hydrodynamics we show that the first creates a dense shell of Si and C atoms near 106 s in which the SiC surely condenses. The second reverse shock causes precondensed grains to move rapidly forward through decelerated …

Life-History Variation In The Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus Graciosus): Phenotypic Plasticity Or Local Adaptation?, Michael W. Sears
Life-History Variation In The Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus Graciosus): Phenotypic Plasticity Or Local Adaptation?, Michael W. Sears
Publications
We performed a laboratory common-environment study to determine the genetic and environmental sources of variation in growth rates of the sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus graciosus). Hatchling lizards were reared from gravid females collected from three study populations along an elevational gradient in southern Utah, USA. Hatchlings were fed ad libidum and were maintained on a 14:10 light:dark cycle, with temperatures at 33°C and 21°C during photophase and scotophase, respectively. Each hatchling was randomly assigned to either a water-supplementation treatment or a control group receiving no supplemental water. Once every five days, the water-supplemented lizards were administered orally a quantity …

Laminitis In Horses, Dee L. Cross
Laminitis In Horses, Dee L. Cross
Clemson Patents
The present invention generally relates to various methods for treating the laminitis syndrome in animals. These benefits are obtained by administering to the animals a composition containing an .alpha.-adrenergic antagonist that does not substantially cross the blood brain barrier. In one embodiment, the .alpha.-adrenergic antagonist is domperidone. The domperidone can be administered to the animal either orally, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly and can be used to treat animals suffering from symptoms of laminitis.

The Conservative Tradition In America, Charles W. Dunn, J. David Woodard
The Conservative Tradition In America, Charles W. Dunn, J. David Woodard
Clemson University Faculty Monographs
Conservatism, once at the periphery of American politics. now occupies
a central and strategic position in the seat of political power. The 1994
election confined a realignment of American politics along conservative
lines In the general electorate, but in the halls of academe conservatism
remains a neglected subject, on the fringes of the curriculum and
outside the door of the faculty lounge Many academics are politically
liberal, and few scholars in the social science disciplines take conservative
intellectual positions seriously

Motor Control Of Locomotor Hindlimb Posture In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Stephen M. Reilly, Richard W. Blob
Motor Control Of Locomotor Hindlimb Posture In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Stephen M. Reilly, Richard W. Blob
Publications
Crocodilians are unusual among quadrupedal tetrapods in their frequent use of a wide variety of hindlimb postures, ranging from sprawling to a more erect high walk. In this study, we use synchronized kinematic videos and electromyographic recordings to test how the activity patterns of hindlimb muscles in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis Daudin) differ between sprawling and more upright postures. Previous force platform analyses suggested that upright posture in alligators would require greater activation by hindlimb extensors to counter increases in the flexor moments exerted about joints by the ground reaction force during upright stance. Consistent with these predictions, ankle extensors …
Subtropical Dry Forest Trees With No Apparent Damage Sprout Following A Hurricane, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo
Subtropical Dry Forest Trees With No Apparent Damage Sprout Following A Hurricane, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo
Publications
Hurricane Georges passed over mature dry forest near Guánica, Puerto Rico in September, 1998. The trees of the dense, short-statured Guánica Forest have a multi-stemmed structure unique to the West Indies in the neo-tropics, a characteristic that has been difficult to explain. Following the hurricane, we measured sprout development below breast height on 1407 stems to assess how response to hurricane disturbance may influence dry forest structure. Basal sprouting increased 8-14 fold after Hurricane Georges. Basal sprouting was found on al- most 68% of damaged stems and, notably, on about 32% of undamaged stems. Basal sprouting was found in all …

System And Process For Treating Waste Water, Annel K. Greene
System And Process For Treating Waste Water, Annel K. Greene
Clemson Patents
The present invention is generally directed to a process and system for treating animal waste. More particularly, the present invention is directed to a process and system for treating animal waste effluent with ozone to decompose the organic material within and improve the odor of the animal waste. The process of the present invention also reduces biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total bacterial content and coliform bacterial count of the animal waste. The process of this present invention comprises collecting an animal waste solution, containing a mixture of water and animal fecal material; contacting the waste solution with ozone …
