Recognizing And Overcoming Difficult Site Conditions For Afforestation Of Bottomland Hardwoods, William Conner, J A. Stanturf, E S. Gardiner, C J. Schweitzer, A W. Ezell Sep 2004

Recognizing And Overcoming Difficult Site Conditions For Afforestation Of Bottomland Hardwoods, William Conner, J A. Stanturf, E S. Gardiner, C J. Schweitzer, A W. Ezell

Publications

In the last decade, about 370,000 acres (150,000 ha) of economically marginal
farmland in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) have been restored to
bottomland hardwood forests (Stanturf and others 1998, King and Keeland 1999,
Schoenholtz and others 2001). Planting of this considerable acreage is due to several federal programs, such as the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), that assist landowners by financing afforestation (Figure 1). Unfortunately, these operational plantings have not performed as well as smaller plantings or research plots (Stanturf and others 2001a). For example, a recent survey of WRP plantings in westcentral Mississippi revealed that more than 90 …

Landscape Design For Energy Efficiency, Mary Taylor Haque, Lolly Tai, Don Ham Jan 2004

Landscape Design For Energy Efficiency, Mary Taylor Haque, Lolly Tai, Don Ham

Environmental Studies

Using the measures outlined in this booklet as a "system" is easy. Planting trees on the east and west sides of your home, installing pavements that are reflective and porous, and redirecting winter winds are all ideas that can be implemented for new homes as well as for retro-fitting existing homes. By incorporating these cost effective and innovative approaches to energy efficiency around your home, you can simultaneously reduce energy costs and create a more pleasant environment.

Regional Forest Types - Tropical Dry Forests, Skip Van Bloem, Ariel E. Lugo, Peter G. Murphy Jan 2004

Regional Forest Types - Tropical Dry Forests, Skip Van Bloem, Ariel E. Lugo, Peter G. Murphy

Publications

Tropical dry forests occur in nearly every tropical country. This forest type provides critical habitat for large mammals and migratory birds, and patches of dry forest can support a high proportion of endemic plant and animal species, as well as being highly valued for agricultural and production forestry uses. Consequently, conservation and understanding of these forests need emphasis, yet conservationists and scientists still frequently overlook this ecosystem.

Hindlimb Function In The Alligator: Integrating Movements, Motor Patterns, Ground Reaction Forces And Bone Strain Of Terrestrial Locomotion, Stephen M. Reilly, Jeffrey S. Wiley, Audrone R. Biknevicius, Richard W. Blob Jan 2004

Hindlimb Function In The Alligator: Integrating Movements, Motor Patterns, Ground Reaction Forces And Bone Strain Of Terrestrial Locomotion, Stephen M. Reilly, Jeffrey S. Wiley, Audrone R. Biknevicius, Richard W. Blob

Publications

Alligator hindlimbs show high torsional loads during terrestrial locomotion, in sharp contrast to the bending or axial compressive loads that predominate in animals that use parasagittal limb movements. The present study integrates new data on hindlimb muscle function with previously obtained data on hindlimb kinematics, motor patterns, ground reaction forces and bone strain in order to (1) assess mechanisms underlying limb bone torsion during non-parasagittal locomotion in alligators and (2) improve understanding of hindlimb dynamics during terrestrial locomotion. Three dynamic stance phase periods were recognized: limb-loading, support-and-propulsion, and limb-unloading phases. Shear stresses due to torsion were maximized during the limb-loading …

Saying These Things, Ronald Moran Jan 2004

Saying These Things, Ronald Moran

Fiction & Poetry

"Ron Moran's poetry immediately leaps from the page to the feet and ankles of the reader's experience. You're on the sidewalk with his characters, you're a flash dancer in his every scenario. He stole one of your monologues right out of your own phone conversation—how does he do that? Across the board, and no matter the particular style of the Moran day, his poems are the view across the street, the dinner beside you at the restaurant, and they are, if you were a poet, too, the outrageously creative language experience you wish you'd have in you."--Jennifer Bosveld, Pudding House …
