A Hidden Glimpse At Old Thailand? The "Siam Episode" In Fontane's Novel Unwiederbringlich, Reinhold Grimm Jan 2002

A Hidden Glimpse At Old Thailand? The "Siam Episode" In Fontane's Novel Unwiederbringlich, Reinhold Grimm

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Hardly ever do images of Thai or Thailand occur in German literature. Granted, there exists an early if seemingly isolated forerunner from the 17th century: namely, Heinrich Anshelm von Zigler und Kliphausen's voluminous Baroque novel entitled Die asiatische Banise ("The Asian Banise" [which is the name of the heroine]). I adduced it, and briefly discussed its opening scene, in my talk "What is a Good Dramatic Text? A German's Answer to a Thai's Question: that I gave in Bangkok almost a decade ago, and which was subsequently published, in a Thai translation by Chetana Nagavajara, in Silpakorn University's Journal of …

The Influence Of Second Language Experience In The Pattern Of Language Processing Of The Bilingual Lexicon, P. Sudasna, S. Luksaneeyanawin, D. Burnham

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The present experimental research studies whether Thai-English bilinguals' language experience in their non-native language influences the pattern of language processing of the bilingual lexicon. Two groups of 100 native Thai bilingual speakers with high or low English language experience were asked to perform Stroop Interference Tasks, with the processing of word forms being either Thai or English and the processing in colour naming also being either Thai or English. The results showed that when the processing of word forms was in Thai, there was more intra- than interlingual interference, and that the degree of interference was equivalent between the two …

Another 'Siam Episode' In A Fontane Novel, Reinhold Grimm

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Recently, in Manusya's 5.1 issue of 2002, I published an essay entitled "A Hidden Glimpse at Old Thailand? The 'Siam Episode' in Fontane's Novel Unwiederbringlich." Meanwhile, in the course of my continued studies of that author's narrative oeuvre, I hit upon yet another such episode which may, who knows, prove to be even more revealing - but likewise perhaps, even more enigmatic - than the former. It occurs in Fontane's last novel, Der Stechlin, which as a book appeared only posthumously, in 1899 ("Stechlin," by the way, is the name of a lake in the Brandenburg March in erstwhile Prussia …

The Culture Of The Huayao Dai And Its Prospects: Comparative Research On The Cultural Characteristics Of The Dai Peoples Living In The Upper Reaches Of The Red River, Zheng Xiaoyun

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Tai people, formally known as of Dai nationality in China, number 1.1 million. One of the greatest concentrated region of Dai peopleinChina is the reaches of the Red River, called the Yuan Jing River. Here their ethnic culture is particularly to be found. The Dai people of the Red River number about 150,000 which is 13% of the totalDai population of China. Furthermore about half of those 150,000 live in Xin Ping and Yuan Jian countries, on the upper reaches of the river. Traditionally, the Dai people of the upper Red River were called Huayao Dai, or "Flower Waist" Dai, …

Searching For The Red Hue: Problems And Prospects For Global Norms, E.R. Klein Jan 2002

Searching For The Red Hue: Problems And Prospects For Global Norms, E.R. Klein

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper argues for the establishment of global norms and rejects relativism. This is accomplished, not through the usual avenues of explicit epistemic justification, but through an exploration of the more subtle and fundamental values of aesthetics. Klein illustrates this process through the example of red clay architecture of Fatehpur Sikri, and urges theorists to take seriously the search for transcultural objective truths. "You can't believe how they loved it," Geeta says. "Somany people loving to bow down and say, Sir, Sir, we just love America." "India and the U.S. as the two great democracies," Vivan adds. "India and America …

A Mophological Analysis Of Neighborhood Structure - Toles And The Ritual Artifacts Of The Kathmandu Valley Towns - The Cases In Thimi, Mohan Pant, Funo Shuji

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The traditional towns of the Kathmandu Valley are ingrained with varying cultural forms of different historical periods. But the paucity of documented literature and the evident difficulties conducting archaeological work on the existing settlements leave significant gaps in the knowledge of ancient and medieval towns of the Valley. This paper, through the morphological analysis of neighborhood units, known as toles, and their ritual artifacts, of one of the Valley towns—Thimi—attempts to discover the different historical layers of the settlement. In particular, the study finds that the territorial structure of the tole and its ritual artifacts such as the shrine of …

The Emergence Of The Beauty Of The 'Childscape': Rediscovering The Path To The Hidden Dimension Of Architecture For Children, Tipsuda Patumanon Jan 2002

The Emergence Of The Beauty Of The 'Childscape': Rediscovering The Path To The Hidden Dimension Of Architecture For Children, Tipsuda Patumanon

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

A phenomenological writing on the rediscovering the path to the hidden dimension of architecture for children is an attempt to describe the emergence of the beauty of the "childscape". We, as adults, often see our child busily talks to the world. Many stories are created along many paths of his life. What we see depends on how often we give ourselves a chance to look and see… to listen and hear. The voices which come from the distant horizon of our child's world are the same voices with which we once spoke. When there is a fusion of the horizons …

Towards Sustainable Eco-Cultural Tourism For Water ? Based Settlements On The Banks Of Chao Phraya River: Ko Kret, Case Study Nonthaburi Province, Thailand, Suwattana Thadaniti

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

"Ko Kret" is a small island of 4.12 square kilometers in the Cho Phraya River. The community of Ko Kret is a traditional settlement with historical value and identity. The residents are mainly from the Mon ethnic group, and have preserved their culture as expressed beautifully through their lifestyle, architecture and cultural activities, including temples, ancient houses, the style of settlement and the pottery artwork. At present, community development as well as cultural and art conservation facilitate tourism on this island. If the Ko Kret community can both display its way of life and manage the impact of tourism then …

Asian Aesthetic Alive - The Visualising Power Of Contemporary National Style, Mirja Thaulow Jan 2002

Asian Aesthetic Alive - The Visualising Power Of Contemporary National Style, Mirja Thaulow

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In these times of globalization, it sometimes appears as if all cultural particularities are about to vanish. But, at the same time, a strong current of public affection for national values can be detected all over the world, especially in the visual culture. Here, an international aesthetic of the national is being developed and it can be termed as "the style of the national" or "national style". By employing this term in the analysis of national pictures from two very different Asian countries, Thailand and Uzbekistan, this article will show that Asian aesthetics are very much alive in the present. …

Tripitaka In Practice In The Fourth And Fifth Reigns: Relics And Images According To Somdet Phra Sańgharāja Pussadeva's Pat̥Hamasambodhi Sermon, Prapod Assavavirul-Hakarn, Peter Skilling Jan 2002

Tripitaka In Practice In The Fourth And Fifth Reigns: Relics And Images According To Somdet Phra Sańgharāja Pussadeva's Pat̥Hamasambodhi Sermon, Prapod Assavavirul-Hakarn, Peter Skilling

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The Tripitaka is not simply an inert collection of manuscripts or books. It is a living thing, a store of ideas that has marked many aspects of social life, from ritual to ethics to mediation practices, to literature, art, and education. The ideas and ideologies of the Tripitaka pervade society. One of the main ways through which the Tripitaka leaves the library and penetrates society is the sermon, which adapts the ideas and ideals of the Tripitaka to suit circumstances and audience. As an example of one sermon genre, the "royally authorized sermon", we translate an excerpt from the Pathamasambodhi …

The Curricular Canon In Northern Thailand And Laos, Justin Mcdanial Jan 2002

The Curricular Canon In Northern Thailand And Laos, Justin Mcdanial

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Nissaya texts are idiosyncratic vernacular notes composed and used by Buddhist monks in Northern Thailand and Laos between the 16th and early 20th centuries. They evince a particular relationship of the authors with the classical (i.e. originally composed in Pali) scripture of Theravada Buddhism, as well as with their intended audience. They reflect certain understandings of the notions of authorship, textual authenticity, the possibility of translation, and homiletics. A comprehensive study reveals the early development of Buddhist curricula in the region and a detailed study pedagogical methods used in these texts affords us a way to describe the nature of …

Traditional Thai Wisdom As Based On The Pali Tripitaka: A Challenge To Science And Technology, Somparn Promta Jan 2002

Traditional Thai Wisdom As Based On The Pali Tripitaka: A Challenge To Science And Technology, Somparn Promta

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The Pali Tipitaka as used in Theravada Buddhist countries is considered to play various important roles. In Thailand, the Pali Tipitaka is not only a religious text but also a main source of Thai wisdom. The recent call for a greater role for Thai wisdom mainly comes from the awareness that the Western way of thought that dominates the modern Thai way of life is something that should be seriously examined. This paper will examine one important Western mode of thought which is generally called science and the attempt by Thai traditional thinkers to create Thai wisdom as a tool …

Karma As Moral Justice In Thai Buddhism, Suwanna Satha-Anand Jan 2002

Karma As Moral Justice In Thai Buddhism, Suwanna Satha-Anand

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article explores philosophical implications of the Buddhist theory of karma as a framework for moral justice. It investigates in what ways and under what conditions karma delivers justice for the individual. From the analysis of both canonical texts and writings of Thai Buddhist scholars, it becomes clear that the Buddhist theory of Karma implies an understanding of justice as entailing elements of both retributive and consequentialist positions. Lastly, it explores the strengths and the limitations of karma as providing moral justice. This last point indicates a discussion of the necessity of including the collective dimension in any discussion of …

What A True Buddhist Should Know About, P.A. Payutto Jan 2002

What A True Buddhist Should Know About, P.A. Payutto

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The Pali Canon refers to the set of scriptures in which the Buddha's teachings, the Dhamma "Doctrine" and Vinaya "Discipline", are enshrined. The Pali term Tipitaka "three baskets [of teachings]" denotes the three major divisions of the Canon. As the Buddha clearly stated that the Dhamma and Vinaya were to succeed him as Teacher after his passing away, it follows that the Pali Canon is in effect where Buddhists can still have an audience with their Teacher and learn his Teaching even though he passed away over 2,500 years ago. The First Rehearsal, whose purpose was to collect and organize …
