Doing The Business Of Faith: The Capitalistic Dhammakaya Movement And The Spiritually-Thirsty Thai Middle Class, Rungrawee Chalermsripinyorat Jan 2002

Doing The Business Of Faith: The Capitalistic Dhammakaya Movement And The Spiritually-Thirsty Thai Middle Class, Rungrawee Chalermsripinyorat

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Dhammakaya, an active, affluent and expanding Buddhist religious movement, became a focus of public attention and media scrutiny in the quarter of 1998 due to its controversial practice of dogged solicitation for donations to build a grand Maha Dhammakaya Jedi structure worth nearly one billion US$, in the face of severe economic recession. Some Buddhist monks and scholars, both orthodox and radical, attacked the movement as a distortion and commercialization of Buddhism. If the Dhammakaya movement offers a novel religious package as alleged by some critics, it is worth examining why this consumer product has gained an upsurge of popularity …

Technological Drive, The Self And The Ethical, Michael Kelly Jan 2002

Technological Drive, The Self And The Ethical, Michael Kelly

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

I want in this essay to change the way we approach the promise of technology. In bringing out the philosophical substance packed into the highly critical diagnostic portion of Virilio's work, I focus on Virilio's observations concerning the human psychological relation to technology. I argue that a form of resentment similar to that found in Nietzsche's genealogy of morals provides the motivating factor in the push for continual and increasingly rapid technological innovation: technological drive follows from fallen man's desire to reconcile his mortality. Understanding this drive brings home the direness of the human condition that makes technological resistance so …

Malai Mongkhon: A Case Of Postmodern Thai Theatre, Kittisak Kerdarunsuksri Jan 2002

Malai Mongkhon: A Case Of Postmodern Thai Theatre, Kittisak Kerdarunsuksri

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Modern stage drama was introduced into Thai theatre during the mid-1960s within the university circle and later spread to the commercial level. To make their productions more attractive and accessible to popular audiences, some theatre practitioners sought to experiment with adopting indigenous sources, either traditional stories or theatrical elements, which have been found in modern Thai theatre from time to time since the early 1970s. During the 1990s, several productions made use of traditional stories and elements to a greater degree due to many factors, such as the promotion of Thainess, the trend in Southeast Asian theatre. Most of these …

Rhythmic Units And Tonal Variation In Thai, Phanintara Teeranon Jan 2002

Rhythmic Units And Tonal Variation In Thai, Phanintara Teeranon

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study investigates whether rhythmic units influence tonal realizations in Thai connected speech. The informants are three female radio announcers, 26 and 30 years of age. Their speech was recorded prior to informing them about the study. They were then asked to read two sets of ton checklists: unchecked and checked syllables. For each tone, five tokens were selected for each following context: (1) a salient syllable in one-syllable, two-syllable, and three-syllable rhythmic units, and (2) a weak syllable in a two-syllable rhythmic unit, the first weak syllable and the second weak syllable in a three-syllable rhythmic unit. The fundamental …

The Buddhist Theravāda Coun-Cils, And The Preservation Of The Buddhist's Teachings, Visuth Busyakul Jan 2002

The Buddhist Theravāda Coun-Cils, And The Preservation Of The Buddhist's Teachings, Visuth Busyakul

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The traditional way of preserving the teaching of the Buddha in the old days was by commitment of every word into memory. It had to be refreshed by subsequent Sangāyanā (or Sangīti) Councils from time to time. This worked effectively for the Theravāda School, which employed Pali as the textual language, regardless of the geographical site of each individual Council. Records of the Councils are found scattered in the Tipitaka and other late Pali writing. In general, it may be that three Theravāda Councils were held in India, two in Ceylon, two in Burma, and two or there in Thailand. …

Progression Markers In Vietnamese Narrative, Somsonge Burusphat Jan 2002

Progression Markers In Vietnamese Narrative, Somsonge Burusphat

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article aims to study the progression markers in six Vietnamese folktales. Progression markers refer to the grammatical devices that characterize any happenings that push the story forward. These markers highlight the temporal sequence of succeeding events, which form the backbone, or storyline of the Vietnamese folktales. They are rôi 'already', xoan ' finish', đoąn 'end, terminate'. thì 'then', bèn 'then, consequence', and đã. 'have experienced'. The paper begins with the structural description of these progression markers and proceeds to their discourse functions both on the narrative timeline and out of the line. As the default timeframe of the narrative …

Tonal Variations And Changes In A Language Mixture Area: A Case Study Of Northeastern Thailand (Isan), Phinnarat Akharawat-Thanakun Jan 2002

Tonal Variations And Changes In A Language Mixture Area: A Case Study Of Northeastern Thailand (Isan), Phinnarat Akharawat-Thanakun

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In northeastern Thailand or "Isan", Lao, otherwise known as the northeastern Thai dialect, is used as a lingua franca by people living in the area, in which minority ethic groups speak Tai dialects/languages, such as the Nyo, Phuthai, saek, Kaloeng, Yoi as well as others. When tonal languages belonging to the same language family are spoken in an area with the respective speakers in constant contact, it is worthwhile to investigate to what extent their tonal systems and tonal characteristics have influenced each other. To achieve this, the earliest available literature has been examined to obtain what appear to be …

Participant Continuity In Thai Fictional Narrative, Suda Rangupan Jan 2002

Participant Continuity In Thai Fictional Narrative, Suda Rangupan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines participant continuity in Thai fictional narratives using the quantitative method of referential distance (RD) proposed by Givon (1983, 1995). According to Givon, referential expressions are different in terms of their RD value: average RD of full noun phrases is that of zero anaphors the lowest. However, the result from this study shows that pronouns and zero pronouns in Thai have equal average RD value while full noun phrases have much higher average RD. Moreover, zero anaphors appear to have longer distance than expected. Considering the distribution of the long distance zero anaphors in different modes of text, …

Direction: Influence On Establishing Bearing And Settlement, Nid Hinshiranan, Narumon Arunothai Jan 2002

Direction: Influence On Establishing Bearing And Settlement, Nid Hinshiranan, Narumon Arunothai

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

People in different cultures have their own unique ways of constructing bearing points and directions to orient themselves with their environment and to give meaning to the world around them. Along with this cognition process, there are social values connected to directions and spatial organization. This article explores the notions of directions and reference points and how they influence the orientation of architectural structures and settlement in different cultures.

Lak Ban And Lak Muang: The Ideology Of Settlement Landscape In Traditional Southeast Asia, Navanath Osiri Jan 2002

Lak Ban And Lak Muang: The Ideology Of Settlement Landscape In Traditional Southeast Asia, Navanath Osiri

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper describes the identifying role ritual architecture plays in the construction of settlement landscapes in northern mainland Southeast Asia. Integrating ethnographic and art historical data, it develops a framework for understanding lak ban and lak muang in terms of their socio-historical development, spatical organization, ritual observances, designs, and meaning. Landscape cannot be fully understood without reference to a worldview which integrates place and space in the production of meaning. (Snead & Preucel 1999,170)

Rethinking Tradition-Another Look At The Essential Characteristics, Piyalada Devakula Thaveeprungsriporn Jan 2002

Rethinking Tradition-Another Look At The Essential Characteristics, Piyalada Devakula Thaveeprungsriporn

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The essay explores the essential experiential characteristics of the traditional house, particularly those which may be appropriately interwoven into the fabric of Thai urban dwellings today. With hermeneutic phenomenology as its philosophical framework, the in-depth exploration takes the form of four comparative case studies, each representing a point in the line of tradition. Through a layering descriptive and interpretive process, five essential patterns emerge, each of which finds its meanings richly traceable to the various facets of the Thai culture. Together, the patterns and their meanings give rise to a framework, which reveals the many facets of a dwelling place, …

Arādhanā Tham: ''Invitation To Teach The Dhamma'', Peter Skilling Jan 2002

Arādhanā Tham: ''Invitation To Teach The Dhamma'', Peter Skilling

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In Thailand, one of the main vehicles for the dissemination of knowledge about Buddhism is the sermon. This was especially so in the pre-modern period of limited literacy, and it is still so today. In formal contexts, whether in a temple or elsewhere, before a monk preaches a sermon a lay follower will recite a Pali verse inviting him to do so. The verse recapitulates a key event in the career of the Buddha. After his awakening, the Buddha. After his awakening, the Buddha was reluctant to teach the Dhamma that he discovered: profound and subtle, who could understand it? …
