Cultural Hybridity And Dynamics In Hanuman Chansamon, Siriporn Phakdeephasook

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The 3-dimensional (3D) animated cartoon entitled Hanuman Chansamon is a presentation of the Ramakian in popular culture style. Cultural hybridity and dynamics make this cartoon appealing for closer investigation. The analysis reveals that hybrid features in Hanuman Chansamon can be categorized into two groups--"omnipresent hybrid feature" and "fractional hybrid feature." Omnipresent hybrid features are those that can be perceived throughout the show while fractional hybrid features exist in some specific components. The sole yet prominent omnipresent hybrid feature is the blend of traditional story and modern presentation technology. Fractional hybrid features are the co-existence of old-new cultural elements as well …

The Meanings Of The Horse-Faced Mask In The Story Of Kaeo Na Ma, Cholada Ruengruglikit

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper aims to study the meanings of the heroine's horse-faced mask in the story of Kaeo Na Ma, The two versions investigated here are the version composed by Prince Phuwanetnarinrit and that of the Ratcharoen written by Nai But and influenced by the former version. Since Prince Phuwanetnarinrit's version firstly indicates that the heroine's horse face can be moved, it is considered as a mask in this paper. Like other masks in Khon or masked drama, the horse face controls the behavior and personality of the wearer. This horse face not only signifies the heroine's tomboyish manners as stated …

The Legacy Of Traditional Thai Literature And Its Impact On Contemporary Children's Literature, Ruenruthai Sujjapun Jan 2005

The Legacy Of Traditional Thai Literature And Its Impact On Contemporary Children's Literature, Ruenruthai Sujjapun

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Literature is a significant part of any nation's cultural heritage, its continuing existence depending on the values which are handed down from era to era, from generation to generation. Most traditional Thai literature follows the same conventions. The influence exerted by western literature helped to foster the development of contemporary Thai literature, but at the same time relegated traditional literature to the back burner, seemingly remote from contemporary Thai life. This can clearly be seen in contemporary children's literature; for example, it is obvious that at the present time the books in The Adventures of Harry Potter series by J.K. …

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study attempts to investigate changes, both in content and form, evidenced in a remarkable number of Thai short stories express an estrangement from urbanism as well as hostility towards westernization, the establishment, and dictatorship. The themes of alienation, bleakness, and despair, which are reactions to urbanization, are common. In terms of change in form, rejection of the representational conventions of realism and the disruption of the unity and causality of plot structure are apparent. The works of this period explore the inner self through various techniques. There is also an increase in the use of experimental modes of expression …

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The ineluctable force of globalization is having an immense on local traditions worldwide. Thai cultures, and lifestyles have also received the full brunt of these 'nouvelle' invasions. Old traditions, including food prepared according to century-old recipes, have started to disappear. The number of venues selling such traditional Thai desserts and snacks has shrunk to only an astonishing few. To halt the death of this legacy, the management of those shops must conduct a study to ascertain what influences customers to come buy these traditional products and to incorporate the findings into their management strategy. Trauma, Repressed Memory, And The Question Of 'Authenticity': Reading See Under: Love And Beloved Through Bhabha, Phrae Chittiphalangsri Jan 2005

Trauma, Repressed Memory, And The Question Of 'Authenticity': Reading See Under: Love And Beloved Through Bhabha, Phrae Chittiphalangsri

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Trauma and the repressed memory of Jewish Holocaust survivors and African-American slaves are issues that require the notion of 'authenticity' in fictional representation. The Zionist discourse demands that Holocaust fictions be written by true witnesses of the genocide and with respectful seriousness, for the Holocaust is a sacred, incomparable phenomenon in Jewish history. In the same manner, the Black American narrative needs authenticity to articulate the Black's own voice, which has been predominately constructed by White Americans since the early history of America. David Grossman's See Under: Love (1999) nevertheless deals with the problem of 'authenticity' in describing the Holocaust, …

The Significance Of Puccha-Vissajjana In The Buddhist Literature, Pisit Kobbun Jan 2005

The Significance Of Puccha-Vissajjana In The Buddhist Literature, Pisit Kobbun

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The use of pucchā-vissajjanā, question and answer, in the Pāli suttas reflects its significance as a literary technique for communicating the teachings of the Buddha. Pucchā-vissajjanā is a technique for teaching the dhamma employed by the Buddha and his disciples. It is a mnemonic technique for conveying and maintaining the teachings in the oral tradition and was kept as a written record until it becomes a tradition technique in composing post-Tipitaka Buddhist literature. When regarding the suttas as a textbook, the use of pucchā-vissajjanā in the suttas is important for the study of dhamma-vinaya. Constructing the suttas according to the …

Beyond The Cockfight: Masculinity And The Thai Dove-Cooing Contest, Wanni Wibulswasdi Anderson

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The Dove-cooing contest in Thailand began as a leisure activity, the hobby of a particular group of men who found peace, pleasure, and enjoyment in listening to the songs of the singing doves. Some hoped for good luck in raising doves with propitious characteristics. The hobby developed into a sport through the initiative of the Association of Dove Breeders in Thailand. The Association's encouragement of dove breeding found enthusiastic support from dove lovers in all regions, especially in Southern Thailand where many prize-winning dives came from. The study presents the training and care of doves, selected scenes of the contest, …

Who Is't Can Read A Woman?': Representation Of Queen Elizabeth I In Cymbeline, Thanomnual Hiranyatheb Jan 2005

Who Is't Can Read A Woman?': Representation Of Queen Elizabeth I In Cymbeline, Thanomnual Hiranyatheb

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article is an attempt to read Cymbeline (1608-1610), one of Shakespeare's so-called 'final plays' or 'romances' as a site of cultural responses to the remaining 'presence' of the late Queen Elizabeth I and her cultural associations in the context of the reign of her gender-different successor, King James I. It argues that these responses can be seen in the play's portrayal of two characters in the play, namely the Wicked Queen and to a lesser extent, Imogen, in which the figure of the late queen is played out and marginalized, and proposes that these representations are ways in which …

Miracle Scene': The Sanskrit Figure Of Speech 'Samasokti' In Thai Literary Convention, Kusuma Raksamani Jan 2005

Miracle Scene': The Sanskrit Figure Of Speech 'Samasokti' In Thai Literary Convention, Kusuma Raksamani

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In Thai classical literature there is a kind of description used in portraying love scenes. Disguised in expressions of double meaning, these passages are, at the same time, rather risque. The portrayal is called 'miracle scene' after the word 'āscarya' (miracle) at the beginning if each passage. The literary device in the description is somewhat similar to the Sanskrit alajkāra, 'samāsokti' in which a second meaning is understood because of the epithets common to both meanings. The paper is an attempt to trace this device in Thai literary convention, gleaning insight from the passage in the masterpieces of different periods. …
