Love Metaphors In Modern Thai Songs, Pattra Ngamjitwongsakul Jan 2005

Love Metaphors In Modern Thai Songs, Pattra Ngamjitwongsakul

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines the love metaphors used by contemporary Thai songwriters in their modern Thai songs. The theoretical framework for the study is the theory of conceptual metaphor (Lakoff, 1987, 1993; Lakoff and Johnson, 1980; Lakoff and Turner, 1989). The data, approximately 3,615 songs from Grammy Entertainment Company, were collected from books, tapes, and the internet and were compiled from 1983 to 2000. Only 502 metaphorical expressions describing love were found. This research revealed that the songwriters intend to convey far more than the surface meaning of their words. The theory of conceptual metaphor helps to explain the correspondences between …

From Dupin To Oedipa: Thomas Pynchon's Parodic Take On Detective Fiction, Suradech Chotiudompant

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This essay aims to investigate how Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of lot 49, when juxtaposed with Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin short stories, can be read as a parodic reworking on the genre of detective fiction. By placing the works of the two authors in relation to theoretical lines of detective fiction, the essay intends to highlight how the world-views of the two authors are distinctively formed, especially in terms of a hermeneutical search for ultimate meaning.

Its only use is for consumption, not for offering. The decoy chicken has higher status than the domestic chicken. It is considered to be in between the …

Asean's Fta Strategy In East Asia, Suthiphand Chirathivat Jan 2005

Asean's Fta Strategy In East Asia, Suthiphand Chirathivat

Asian Review

Since the 1997 financial crisis, ASEAN countries have become involved individually and regionally in the accelerating trend towards bilateral free trade agreements. Singapore began the trend, followed by Thailand, and then other countries including Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. ASEAN also accepted China's proposal for an agreement with the grouping as a whole, leading to similar negotiations with Japan, India and South Korea. A complex web of bilateral agreements is emerging. At present it is not clear how this will affect ASEAN's progress towards deeper regional integration.

Development In The Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle, Toh Mun Heng

Asian Review

In this article, I explore whether regional economic cooperation in the form of growth triangles, made popular during the late 1980s, can continue to be relevant in the face of more formal arrangements such as free trade agreements and other bilateral initiatives in recent years. The discussion is focussed on the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore growth triangle which is a pioneering arrangement in Southeast Asia. This project continues to be a successful mode of cooperation among the three countries and will remain a key and subtle framework for regional economic collaboration amidst the plethora of other initiatives. Growth triangles are one of several …

Energy Competition And Cooperation In The Bimstec Region: Potential And Prospects For Myanmar, Myat Thein, Myoe Myint Jan 2005

Energy Competition And Cooperation In The Bimstec Region: Potential And Prospects For Myanmar, Myat Thein, Myoe Myint

Asian Review

This paper explores the prospects for Myanmar to contribute towards energy cooperation in the region while at the same time promoting sustainable development at home. Myanmar has large unused reserves of renewables, especially hydropower and biomass. Natural gas contributes to export earnings, but oil imports are growing. India and China have large appetites for energy. Myanmar, along with Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, have unused potential which could contribute to export earnings and growth through export to these large neighbors. However the development of these reserves requires regional cooperation, especially for investment in distribution grids. Currently Myanmar's energy policy is unfocused. …

Modern Thai Buddhist Poetry By Women Poets: A Transformation Of Wisdom, Suchitra Chongstitvatana

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The study is an attempt to explore and explain the transformation of Thai didactic poetry, especially Buddhist poetry by women poet. The texts selected are Dawn in the Night by Chomchand. Under the Rain and Thunder by Khunying Chamnongsri Rutnin. In Thai Theravadin tradition women poets rarely hold a high position nor have authority in teaching Dharma. In the realm of didactic poetry, monk-poets or male poets are the norm. These two women poets convey the teaching of Dharma through expressing artistically their personal experience of practicing Dharma. This aspect transforms the tradition of Thai didactic poetry by emphasizing the …

Working Between Two Worlds: New Roles For Traditional Thai Dance And Dancers, Pornrat Damrhung Jan 2005

Working Between Two Worlds: New Roles For Traditional Thai Dance And Dancers, Pornrat Damrhung

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Thailand's financial collapse and new constitution in 1997 brought issues of commercialization, education reform, and decentralization to the forefront of arts and culture. The paper focuses on three aspects of the current situation of the traditional arts and artists in Thailand. First, the commercialized globalization of the arts has prompted some artists to create drama companies and theatre events woven through with Western themes and contemporary forms, but grounded in traditional Thai performance. Second, the new emphasis on arts education by Thailand's recent educational reforms has prompted the creation of new arts education programs that train local artists to adapt …
