A common canine erythrocyte antigen is DEA 1.1 but it is the most immunogenic. In this study, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy was used to examine the alterations of membrane biomolecules in trypsin-treated DEA 1.1+ canine erythrocytes. Production of canine DEA 1.1- erythrocytes was achieved by treating DEA 1.1+ red cells (5% cell suspension) with 1 mg/ml trypsin for 120 mins, without affecting the intracellular 2,3-diphosphoglycerate level. FTIR microspectroscopy was employed to study the effects of trypsin-treatment on canine trypsinized red cell membrane components. Production of canine DEA 1.1- erythrocytes was achieved without affecting the intracellular 2,3-diphosphoglycerate level. The FTIR …

Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus (SEZ) is responsible for a wide variety of infections in many animal species. Studies aimed at developing safe and effective vaccines against SEZ infections are thus of great interest. SeseC_00396 was a novel protein identified in the previous study. In this study, recombinant SeseC_00396 of SEZ was expressed and showed a strong immunoreactivity with mini-pig convalescent sera. Studies in mice have revealed that the recombinant protein induced a marked antibody response which was associated with protection against SEZ infection. The hyperimmune sera against SeseC_00396 could efficiently kill the bacteria. In addition, it was also found that …

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in the healing of experimentally created unicortical defect (UCD) of rat femurs. Twenty-four adult Wister rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: UCD and UCD+LLLT. The animals were subdivided into 3 groups (each group had 4 animals) and then they sacrificed at day 8, 15 and 22 for radiological, pathological and biochemical analysis. Bone healing was significantly different between the groups at day 15 and 22 (P < 0.05), while bone formation was significantly increased in the UCD+LLLT group at day 22 compared to the UCD group (P < 0.05). On histopathological examination, significant difference was found between the UCD and UCD+LLLT groups on the 22nd day (P < 0.05) while there was no difference on the 8th and 15th day. In the UCD group, the plasma Alkaline phosphatase activity decreased on the 15th and 22nd days, Calcium on the 15th day and Phosphorus on the 8th and 22nd days compared to the UCD+LLLT group. In addition, Glutathione levels, Plasma Catalase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Superoxide Dismutase activity significantly reduced in the UCD group compared with UCD+LLLT on the 8th, 15th and 22nd day (P < 0.05). In conclusion, LLLT applied at a dose of 904µm accelerates fracture healing in UCD of a rat’s femur. However, this effect shows an increase after the 22nd day of LLLT application.

Air Quality Indexing, Mapping And Principal Components Analysis Of Ambient Air Pollutants Around Farm Settlements Across Ogun State, Nigeria, Funmilola Oyebanji, Godson Ana, Opeyemi Tope-Ajayi, Adebayo Sadiq, Yahaya Mijinyawa
Applied Environmental Research
The focus of this study was to portray the spatial pattern of air quality across seasons in the eight sampled farm settlements using air quality indexes and assess the clusters of monitored air pollutants. The concentrations of air pollutants were determined using in-situ portable gas detectors and particulate counter. The AQI for each criteria pollutants (CO, O3, TSP, PM10, SO2, and PM2.5) was calculated using AQI formulae of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and mapped using the Inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation method in the Geographic information systems (GIS) environment. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to group the …
Treatment Of Iron From Groundwater By Ozonation: Influence Of Hardness As A Scavenger, Apiradee Sukmilin, Ratsamee Sangsirimongkolying
Treatment Of Iron From Groundwater By Ozonation: Influence Of Hardness As A Scavenger, Apiradee Sukmilin, Ratsamee Sangsirimongkolying
Applied Environmental Research
This study assesses the efficiency of using ozone technology to treat iron from groundwater while hardness acts as a radical scavenger. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the effects of initial pH 6, 7 and 8, and hardness of 300, 400 and 500 mg L-1 and kinetic analysis. The optimum conditions were found to be initial pH of 8 and hardness of 300 mg L-1. The removal efficiency of iron by ozonation was 99.97%, which was higher than that of air without ozone applied (83.67%). However, the presence of hardness and tert-butanol (TBA) had a negative effect on the …

Source And Distribution Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Surface Sediment From Chalong Bay, Phuket, Thailand, Danai Tipmanee, Yada Patchim, Penjai Sompongchaiyakul
Applied Environmental Research
This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and apportionment of potential sources of the 16 US-EPA priority PAHs in surface sediments of Chalong Bay, Phuket, Thailand. A total 28 of sediment samples were collected from areas with high maritime activity in Chalong Bay, subjected to conventional high recovery Soxhlet extraction, purified with SiO2 column chromatography, and quantified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Total concentration of PAHs (Σ16PAHs) ranged from 31.15 to 1696 ng g−1 dry weight, with an average of 198.2 ± 318.5 ng g−1 dry weight. Binary diagnostic ratios plots were used to distinguish between petrogenic and pyrogenic …
