Warrantless Drone Surveillance: Constitutionally Permissible Or Prohibited?, Brett Raffish

Paideia

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as remotely piloted aerial vehicles (RPAVs) or drones, have been a tool for military reconnaissance and surveillance since the early 1900s. They are one of many emerging technologies that have broken onto the consumer market. In addition to their appeal on the private market, drone technology serves a practical purpose for law enforcement agencies looking to adopt new and innovative methods of conducting aerial surveillance. However, the use of drones for surveillance has raised questions pertaining to compliance and consistency with federal search and seizure law as outlined by precedent and the Fourth Amendment. …

Don’T Believe The Hype: The Radical Elements Of Hip-Hop, Jenell Navarro, Catherine Trujillo, Jeremiah Hernandez, Logan Kregness, John Duch, Anna Teiche

Creative Works

“Don’t Believe the Hype: the Radical Elements of Hip-Hop” is an installation that showcases the five elements of hip-hop culture. These elements—graffiti writing, breakdancing, deejaying, emceeing, and knowledge production— have been utilized to speak truth and justice about social ills in the United States and beyond. This exhibit illustrates the conscious roots of hip-hop culture from the South Bronx in the 1970s and follows that course to our current moment, where hip-hop still remains a powerful voice for those who are marginalized by dominant structures of power.

The Unborn Victims Of Violence Act: Expanding A Neoliberal, Carceral State, Dominic Scialabba Apr 2018

The Unborn Victims Of Violence Act: Expanding A Neoliberal, Carceral State, Dominic Scialabba

Paideia

Fetal-protection laws, such as the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, are a contemporary means of upholding and spreading the neoliberal administrative state and mass incarceration within the United States. This act creates a political culture in which laws similar to the Unborn Victims of Violence Act can be applied to restrict mothers’ access to proper health services, and to even imprison expecting mothers. I argue these laws do not work to prevent domestic violence, but rather participate in the larger prison industrial complex. A second key finding is that fetal-protection laws stand as obstacles to achieving reproductive justice in policing …

Fighting Words: Applications In Modern Racial Contexts, Maure Gildea Apr 2018

Fighting Words: Applications In Modern Racial Contexts, Maure Gildea

Paideia

The notion of “fighting words” was established in the benchmark case Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, which chronicled how Chaplinsky, a proselytizing Jehovah’s witness, called the city marshal a “God damned racketeer” and a “damned fascist,” and was convicted for violating a state statute forbidding individuals from addressing others in an offensive way. The New Hampshire statute and the Chaplinsky ruling established a new framework for classifying speech as fighting words, which are not constitutionally protected speech. For speech to be considered fighting words, it must satisfy three criteria: The speech must be individually addressed and incite immediate violence in an …

Reproduction As A Crime: State Intervention During Pregnancy, Emily Spacek

Paideia

This paper briefly examines the actions by states that criminalize substance use during pregnancy through a critical lens that grants attention to the reasons for and implications of punishing pregnant women for specific actions taken during pregnancy. It first embarks on a case study into a particular Alabama law that has warranted the arrests of hundreds of women since its implementation in 2006. Then, using qualitative research, this paper investigates broader state intervention into the lives of pregnant, substance using women via criminal prosecution and the termination of parental rights. Results indicate that current punitive policies have often developed without …

China's Regional Expansion: Evaluating The Trump Administration's Response, Ethan Gunnlaugsson

Paideia

This paper examines relative power relations in Asia between the United States and China while assessing how the United States might approach a potential change in the balance of power of the region. The United States, under President Trump, has enacted numerous policies that target the rise of Chinese power, but most appear to be protectionist measures. These include the application of tariffs on Chinese imported goods, investigations that bypass multilateral institutions on China’s coercive economic behavior and the removal of the United States from Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. This paper uses empirical findings and employs the lens of realism to …

Real-Time Audio-Midi Controller, Brian Shino Balberchak Apr 2018

Real-Time Audio-Midi Controller, Brian Shino Balberchak

Computer Engineering

Most MIDI controllers used in music production use a regular keyboard to generate the MIDI notes that are sent to the synthesizer. This project aims to provide the user with a different way of generating MIDI data: by playing an instrument of their choice with a passive electronic pickup to generate MIDI notes that correspond with the fundamental frequency of the musical pitch being played. The pitch-detecting algorithm used in this application utilizes a modified form of auto-correlation.

As an embedded systems project that uses signal-processing techniques, the knowledge of topics from the following courses was essential:

Feasibility Analysis For Reclaim Device During Shotcrete Application, Cameron Neil Berkins Apr 2018

Feasibility Analysis For Reclaim Device During Shotcrete Application, Cameron Neil Berkins

Construction Management

Shotcrete application has proven advantages over cast-in-place concrete under many different situations. Ease of access, minimal formwork, and higher productivity are prime examples. Its uses have exponentially increased through technical innovations to improve the ready-mix, nozzlemen technique, application surfaces, and to ensure higher dependability of the equipment. Unfortunately, concrete waste is still one of the highest percentages of overall waste in the construction industry. Shotcrete rebound, the material that falls from the wall due to lack of cohesion during installation, has slowly been reduced due to ready-mix alterations over the years, but effective recycling processes have yet to be implemented. …

Creating An Organized/Safer Way For Contractors To Carry Oversized Spare Tires, Thomas Arismendi Apr 2018

Creating An Organized/Safer Way For Contractors To Carry Oversized Spare Tires, Thomas Arismendi

Construction Management

Construction is an industry that needs trucks/vehicles to travel across large dirt construction sites without getting stuck. This typically means upgrading to a larger wheel width/diameter to create the largest possible surface area for the tire to cover while off-road. Managing to get a flat tire whether it is rolling a bead in the dirt from being aired down or running over objects such as nails/screws, it is always important to carry a spare tire that fits the application. This causes an increased need to safely lock down an oversized spare when the time comes for one. Most of the …
