Lead (Pb) contamination of agroecosystems is a serious issue as Pb is a persistent pollutant that is retained in soil for long, causing toxicities to organisms. This study examines biotransfer of Pb from soils treated with different concentrations of Pb through a broad bean (Vicia faba L.)–aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.)–ladybird (Coccinella transversalis Fabricius) food chain and its consequent inference for natural biological control, the ladybird. The soil was amended with Pb at the rates of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg kg−1(w/w). The amount of Pb in plant, aphid and ladybird increased in a dose-dependent manner …

Impact Of Probiotics On Gastrointestinal Pathogenic Growth And Host Tight Junction Integrity, Rachel Cohen
Impact Of Probiotics On Gastrointestinal Pathogenic Growth And Host Tight Junction Integrity, Rachel Cohen
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Over the past decade, interest in the use of probiotics, or “good bacteria”, for human health advancement and remediation has grown. Previous studies have shown that some health benefits conferred by probiotics are strain specific, therefore individual probiotic effects must be evaluated. This study evaluated some probiotic candidates on their ability to produce metabolites which inhibit the growth of foodborne pathogens. Probiotics are known to inhibit growth of other bacteria through competitive exclusion and production of bactericidins. In addition, previous studies have established that some probiotics promote the integrity of tight junctions, proteins that play a role in intestinal epithelial …
A Paper-Based Elisa Device For The Rapid Detection Of Ischemic Stroke, Andrea Larsen
A Paper-Based Elisa Device For The Rapid Detection Of Ischemic Stroke, Andrea Larsen
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Diagnosing an ischemic stroke accurately and quickly is essential for appropriate treatment and results in more effective management of the stroke, leading to better patient outcomes. Specifically, the determination of ischemic versus hemorrhagic stroke leads to critically different treatment paths, which would be potentially fatal if administered incorrectly. Currently, ischemic strokes are diagnosed through a series of tests, including a physical examination, CT scans, and a panel of blood tests to exclude hemorrhagic stroke or other similarly presenting conditions, in order to administer tPA (the main treatment) within the three hour window. The discovery of biomarkers, molecules which are upregulated …

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Today’s off-the-shelf cosmetics are filled with various chemicals and additives to produce a product that performs effectively for the consumer; however, the industry has been steering towards more natural products that are marketed to be safer and healthier for consumers. In particular, facial moisturizers have shown a shift from synthetic additives, such as benzoyl peroxide, to naturally found additives, including tea tree oil and aloe vera. Unfortunately, there is a lack of accessibility to data confirming or denying the effectiveness of the various additives used in cosmetic products. This study aimed to determine the performance differences, if any, among natural …

Erosion Resistance Of Tungsten-Carbide Coatings For Steel Pipes In Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units, Davis Vannasing, Jennifer Hulfachor
Materials Engineering
In petroleum processing, the flow of catalyst readily leads to erosion of piping in a fluid catalytic cracking unit. Advances in coating materials and processes necessitate a re-evaluation of current protection methods. Commercially available tungsten-carbide (WC) claddings and nanostructured WC-W CVD coatings were investigated as potential alternative erosion-resistant coatings. Erosion tests by solid particle impingement were conducted on 2 variations of claddings and 1 variation of WC-W coatings following ASTM standard G76. A36 steel coupons were used as reference samples. For statistical validation, 2-3 replications of the tests were performed for the claddings and WC-W coating. Testing was conducted using …

Flight Director Embedded System And Mobile Ios Application, Anthony Epshteyn
Computer Engineering
For my senior project, I was asked to assist an Aerospace Engineering professor with the design of his new glider. He needed to create a flight director-type instrument so that his pilot could get the aircraft’s positional data during flight. This positional data came from a powerful sensor mounted on the fuselage. To interface with the sensor, I created an embedded system comprised of a ESP32 micro-controller communicating with the sensor via UART/RS-232. The micro-controller was mounted on a breadboard and connected to the sensor via jumper wires. The ESP32 featured a Bluetooth chip that allowed for communication using the …

Lazy Fault Recovery For Redundant Mpi, Elie Saliba
Lazy Fault Recovery For Redundant Mpi, Elie Saliba
Master's Theses
Distributed Systems (DS) where multiple computers share a workload across a network, are used everywhere, from data intensive computations to storage and machine learning. DS provide a relatively cheap and efficient solution that allows stability with improved performance for computational intensive applications. In a DS faults and failures are the norm not the exception. At any moment data corruption can occur especially since a DS usually consists of hundred to thousands of units of commodity hardware. The large number and quality of components guarantees, by probability, that at any given time some of the components will not be working and …
Implementation Of Multivariate Artificial Neural Networks Coupled With Genetic Algorithms For The Multi-Objective Property Prediction And Optimization Of Emulsion Polymers, David Chisholm
Master's Theses
Machine learning has been gaining popularity over the past few decades as computers have become more advanced. On a fundamental level, machine learning consists of the use of computerized statistical methods to analyze data and discover trends that may not have been obvious or otherwise observable previously. These trends can then be used to make predictions on new data and explore entirely new design spaces. Methods vary from simple linear regression to highly complex neural networks, but the end goal is similar. The application of these methods to material property prediction and new material discovery has been of high interest …
