Molecular Imprint Polymers (MIPs) constitute a unique class of chemically-synthesized antigen recognition materials. As microparticles and nanoparticles, they can act as synthetic antibodies with numerous potential applications. We will develop protocols for the rapid generation of albumin-binding MIPs, characterize the affinity and specificity of the resulting particles, and investigate their application towards serum depletion for proteomics.
Compositional Optimization Of Amyloid-Graphene Oxide Nanohybrids For Biomaterials, Claire L. Drewery
Compositional Optimization Of Amyloid-Graphene Oxide Nanohybrids For Biomaterials, Claire L. Drewery
Materials Engineering
Amyloid nanofibrils are natural materials capable of self-assembling into precise structures with tunable functionalities, while exhibiting excellent mechanical properties. In combination with highly conductive graphene oxide (GO), the 1-D amyloid nanofibrils and 2-D nanosheets of GO can produce a robust and bio-functional nanohybrid, hypothesized to exhibit multi-domain functional properties useful for enzyme sensing, water purification, drug delivery, and tissue scaffolding applications. Here, we examine the properties of an amyloid-graphene oxide nanohybrid film made with amyloids derived from hen egg white lysozymes in an attempt to explore the diverse toolbox of amyloid derivatives and establish ideal fabrication methods and formulations of …

Nano-Enhanced Composite Membranes For Water Desalination, Benjamin Fredrik Victor Sundling Von Fürstenrecht
Nano-Enhanced Composite Membranes For Water Desalination, Benjamin Fredrik Victor Sundling Von Fürstenrecht
Materials Engineering
In theory single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) will aid in ion rejection due hydrophobicity and smoothness of the SWCNT. An efficient means of water desalination utilizing SWCNT in a membrane seems plausible. A lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) solution was made with a synthesized polymerizable surfactant methacryloxy ethyl hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (C16MA) to help with vertical alignment of SWCNT. Due to SWCNT lack of solubility and tendency to agglomerate in water, a dispersion performed using an inert surfactant centrimonium bromide (CTAB) to make sure that the SWCNT were homogeneously dispersed in the solution without altering the hexagonal packing factor of …

Simpler Is Better: Predicting Consumer Vehicle Purchases In The Short Run, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Gloria Helfand, Changzheng Liu, Marie Donahue, Ari Kahan, Michael Shelby
Economics
When agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establish future greenhouse gas emissions standards for new vehicles, forecasting future vehicle purchases due to changes in fuel economy and prices provides insight into regulatory impacts. We compare predictions from a nested logit model independently developed for US EPA to a simple model where past market share predicts future market share using data from model years 2008, 2010, and 2016. The simple model outperforms the nested logit model for all goodness-of-prediction measures for both prediction years. Including changes in vehicle price and fuel economy increases bias in forecasted market shares. …
Investigation Of Copper Infiltration Alloys For Use In Metal Matrix Composite Drill Bits, Samuel J. Stueland, Timothy P. Markiewicz
Investigation Of Copper Infiltration Alloys For Use In Metal Matrix Composite Drill Bits, Samuel J. Stueland, Timothy P. Markiewicz
Materials Engineering
A newly developed copper-based alloy, P98-X1 was tested for compressive strength to predict qualitative performance compared to MF53, F-Bronze, CuNiSn, and CuMnNi for use as the infiltration alloy in metal matrix composite (MMC) drill bits. Ingots of each alloy were cast using an arc furnace and cut into compression testing samples using wire electrical discharge machining (EDM). The alloys were selected for testing based on solid solution strengthening coefficient and melting point. Five of each alloy were compression tested to determine yield strength of the infiltration alloy. Yield strength was determined using a 0.002mm displacement offset from the linear elastic …
Rotating Beam Fatigue Of Forged 2219-T852 Aluminum Alloy, Julio Escamilla, Madison Reed
Rotating Beam Fatigue Of Forged 2219-T852 Aluminum Alloy, Julio Escamilla, Madison Reed
Materials Engineering
2219 aluminum has been used extensively in aerospace applications due to its ability to retain strength in large section thicknesses, thus making it ideal for large forgings. However, the Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) handbook, a source of design data for aerospace industry applications, lacks information on 2219 in the T852 condition, particularly concerning the behavior of the alloy under cyclic loading conditions. Data was collected for forgings of 2219-T852 aluminum as produced by Weber Metals to determine the fatigue life of the alloy-temper combination and to assess the effects of forge thickness and orientation on fatigue life. …
At The Intersection Of Hope And Despair: Korea’S Uncertain Trajectory In The 1980s, Haley Noelle Cole
At The Intersection Of Hope And Despair: Korea’S Uncertain Trajectory In The 1980s, Haley Noelle Cole
History
The 1980s in South Korea were defined by political factionalism and constant protest. The brief ecstasy afforded by the assassination of the dictatorial president Park Chung Hee in 1979 gave way to disillusionment with the policies of his successor, Chun Doo Hwan. Throughout Chun’s term, he sought to subvert popular perceptions of his authoritarian illegitimacy he earned through the bloody military coup with which he obtained power. Chun hoped to justify his presidency within the contexts of 1) the 1987 presidential election, wherein the country would witness its first peaceful transfer of power in the post-war era, and 2) the …
Cisco Nexus 9200 Robustness Redesign, Colin Berge, Ethan Gold, Cole Christopherson, Rahul Makhijani
Cisco Nexus 9200 Robustness Redesign, Colin Berge, Ethan Gold, Cole Christopherson, Rahul Makhijani
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Certain configurations of Cisco's Nexus 9200 product experienced issues with bending during shipping. Two solutions were developed to eliminate this problem: an external brace that could quickly address the problem yet was expensive and unsustainable, and a redesigned chassis, which was more economical but came with a longer time to implement. Real world packaging and shipping conditions were simulated in SolidWorks and Finite Element Analysis was used to model the stresses experienced when the product is dropped. Both designs were found to significantly reduce stress in critical areas, thus reducing the chance of failure and the cost of the problem. …
Rescue And Rehabilitation Of A Juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk: A Case Study, Maya Higa
Rescue And Rehabilitation Of A Juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk: A Case Study, Maya Higa
Agricultural Education and Communication
Many raptor species are becoming threatened and, in some cases, endangered as a result of human activity including habitat destruction and pesticide use (Morishita, Fullerton, Lowenstine, Gardner & Brooks, 1998). Because of this, raptor rehabilitation has become increasingly popular in conservation efforts. In North America, the red-tailed hawk is one of the most widespread and commonly known birds of prey (Preston & Beane, 2009). According to the National Audubon Society, the conservation status of red-tailed hawks is currently of least concern and numbers may even be increasing in some areas since the 1960s. While this species is not threatened, the …
Consumer Choice Within Fresh Produce, Victoria C. Ross
Consumer Choice Within Fresh Produce, Victoria C. Ross
Agricultural Education and Communication
This project set out to question whether fresh produce required more specific labeling of pesticides and fertilizer inputs on fresh produce. Like many questions regarding health, environmental science, agriculture, and politics, there is not one simple answer. After listening to professionals and interviewing customers outside grocery stores, it's clear that the majority of consumers are not pursuing additional information, but that there is a small group of customers who would appreciate it. It also became clear that although fear mentality is of concern to professionals in the food industry, consumers don’t seem to understand the negative effects their participation in …
Succession Planning In Farming- A Guided Step, Alexandra Lavy
Succession Planning In Farming- A Guided Step, Alexandra Lavy
Agricultural Education and Communication
The author began this project by researching a variety of tax laws, succession planning, and what document and resources were already available to farming and ranching families.
For example, for the Introduction to Succession Planning in California section, the author described what succession planning is and explained the process. The author explained that a study found that nearly 50% of farmers do not have a succession plan, and how not being prepared will affect those farmers. This project created a guideline for farmers to follow when planning their succession, as well as why it is important. This project outlined the …

Creating The Cal Poly Kitchen, Chanel G. Jensen
Agricultural Education and Communication
This book was created by a Cal Poly student for Cal Poly students. I don’t claim to know anything about cooking, I am not a food science major, and I have never taken a formal cooking class. However, through trial and error, I have found recipes that work for me on a college budget and schedule.
The summer after my sophomore year, I went to live with my mom in Walla Walla, Washington. She subscribed to the food service Blue Apron, which would send a box once a week with 3 2-person meals. The recipes were always so fabulous… that …
Investigation Of Pervasive Clay Layers And Their Effect On Groundwater Flow Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography In The San Antonio Groundwater Basin, James M. Carlson
Investigation Of Pervasive Clay Layers And Their Effect On Groundwater Flow Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography In The San Antonio Groundwater Basin, James M. Carlson
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
The United States Geological Survey is developing an integrated hydrologic model of the San Antonio Creek Groundwater Basin to better understand and simulate the integrated surface water and groundwater system. An abrupt 60 meter offset in groundwater depth over a distance of less than one kilometer is observed in well readings within the Cañada De Las Flores region of the groundwater basin. Abrupt changes in groundwater levels are often explained by the presence of a fault in the subsurface vertically offsetting sedimentary units. However, observations of the structural geology of this region indicates that faulting is unlikely and suggests an …
Farmer And Rancher Suicide Prevention Posters, Kayla Dawn Copus
Farmer And Rancher Suicide Prevention Posters, Kayla Dawn Copus
Agricultural Education and Communication
To develop a poster for farmer and rancher suicide awareness, the author first researched general suicide prevention and awareness posters to see analyze successful examples and to get ideas for potential themes, colors, and content. The ideas generated in this process needed to be methodically applied to make the content relevant and relatable for those in the agricultural industry. In this process, the author chose to incorporate a word cloud filled with words that represent agricultural issues and influence farmer and rancher suicide. The phrase “Suicide does not solve agricultural issues,” was chosen to use as the title at the …

An Investigation Of The Anomalous Thrust Capabilities Of The Electromagnetic Drive, Hannah J. Simons
An Investigation Of The Anomalous Thrust Capabilities Of The Electromagnetic Drive, Hannah J. Simons
Physics
The Electromagnetic Drive (EMDrive) is a propellant-less engine concept hypothesized by aero- space engineer Roger Shawyer. Shawyer’s proposed thruster technology is grounded on the theory of electromagnetic resonant behavior exhibited by a radiofrequency cavity, though the source of any generated thrust is undetermined by current physical laws. NASA Eagleworks Laboratories at John- son Space Center conducted a vacuum test campaign to investigate previously reported anomalous thrust capabilities of such a closed radiofrequency cavity, using a low-thrust torsion pendulum. The team published positive, although small-scaled thrust results in 2017. Following NASA Eagleworks breakthrough result and operating under the assumption that the …
Machine Learning Algorithm For Predicting Major League Baseball Team Wins, Bryce Farrell
Machine Learning Algorithm For Predicting Major League Baseball Team Wins, Bryce Farrell
Computer Engineering
I was inspired to work on this project by the book “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis. The book discusses the advancements made in sports analytics, and it gave me the idea to take Major League Baseball analytics to the next level. Machine learning and artificial intelligence is the future of many industries, but analytics and statistics is a clear starting point. I decided to combine the power of neural networks with traditional baseball statistics to predict the win totals of teams. Ideally, this information would be used to inform teams on where they need to improve to secure more wins. This …

Computer Engineering
Technology and the way that humans interact is becoming more vital and omnipresent with every passing day. However, human interface device designers suffer from the increasingly popular “designed for me or people like me” syndrome. This design philosophy inherently limits accessibility and usability of technology to those like the designer. This places severe limits of usability to those who are not fully able as well as leaves non-traditional human interface devices unexplored. This project set out to explore a previously uncharted human interface device, on an electric skateboard, and compare it send user experience with industry leading human interface devices.
