The Structure Function Relationship Of Disordered Networks Using Young's Modulus And Floppy Modes, Melinda Grace Tajnai Feb 2021

The Structure Function Relationship Of Disordered Networks Using Young's Modulus And Floppy Modes, Melinda Grace Tajnai

Physics

Disordered networks may have the ability to store information that can be retrieved using a Young’s modulus measurement. The effect of the number of floppy modes a network has on the value of this Young’s modulus measurement is unknown. This experiment uses 28 networks consisting of 3D printed edges in a sliding frame to determine how the Young’s modulus of a network is related to the number of floppy modes.

A Single-Stage Passive Vibration Isolation System For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Toan T. Le Feb 2021

A Single-Stage Passive Vibration Isolation System For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Toan T. Le

Master's Theses

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) uses quantum tunneling effect to study the surfaces of materials on an atomic scale. Since the probe of the microscope is on the order of nanometers away from the surface, the device is prone to noises due to vibrations from the surroundings. To minimize the random noises and floor vibrations, passive vibration isolation is a commonly used technique due to its low cost and simpler design compared to active vibration isolation, especially when the entire vibration isolation system (VIS) stays inside an Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) environment. This research aims to analyze and build a single-stage …

Space Telescope And Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. Ix. Velocity–Delay Maps For Broad Emission Lines In Ngc 5548, Keith Horne, G. De Rosa, B. M. Peterson, A. J. Barth, Vardha N. Bennert, Y. Zu Feb 2021

Space Telescope And Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. Ix. Velocity–Delay Maps For Broad Emission Lines In Ngc 5548, Keith Horne, G. De Rosa, B. M. Peterson, A. J. Barth, Vardha N. Bennert, Y. Zu

Physics

In this contribution, we achieve the primary goal of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) STORM campaign by recovering velocity–delay maps for the prominent broad emission lines (Lyα, C IV, He II, and Hβ) in the spectrum of NGC 5548. These are the most detailed velocity–delay maps ever obtained for an AGN, providing unprecedented information on the geometry, ionization structure, and kinematics of the broad-line region. Virial envelopes enclosing the emission-line responses show that the reverberating gas is bound to the black hole. A stratified ionization structure is evident. The He II response inside 5–10 lt-day has a broad single-peaked velocity …

Assessing Stream-Aquifer Connectivity In A Coastal California Watershed, Bwalya Malama, Devin Pritchard-Peterson, John J. Jasbinsek, Christopher Surfleet

Physics

We report the results of field and laboratory investigations of stream-aquifer interactions in a watershed along the California coast to assess the impact of groundwater pumping for irrigation on stream flows. The methods used include subsurface sediment sampling using direct-push drilling, laboratory permeability and particle size analyses of sediment, piezometer installation and instrumentation, stream discharge and stage monitoring, pumping tests for aquifer characterization, resistivity surveys, and long-term passive monitoring of stream stage and groundwater levels. Spectral analysis of long-term water level data was used to assess correlation between stream and groundwater level time series data. The investigations revealed the presence …

Cultivar And Nutrient Management Effects On Disease Resistance And Nutrient Use Efficiency In Strawberries, Kate Worrell Jan 2021

Cultivar And Nutrient Management Effects On Disease Resistance And Nutrient Use Efficiency In Strawberries, Kate Worrell

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

In this research project we utilizing different amounts of compost N in four specific strawberry cultivars to minimize Macrophomina phaseolina in strawberries a disease that causes plant mortality due to crown rot. We had been assuming that adding compost N will lead to a decrease in the disease rates and help the strawberries grown better than they would without the compost. We found that in general looking at the graphs related just to treatment compost was found to be just as effective as CFR. In some cases, compost was even less effective as seen in the graph of Fig.2. CRF …

Reimagining The Women’S College: A Critical Analysis Of Historically Women’S College Transgender Admission Policies, Emily M. Lauletta Jan 2021

Reimagining The Women’S College: A Critical Analysis Of Historically Women’S College Transgender Admission Policies, Emily M. Lauletta

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

Historically women’s colleges, particularly those which are predominantly white, have a long and complicated history with their relationship to both feminism, equity, and transgender justice. Using a trans liberation framework, I have critically analyzed the trans student admission policies from four historically women’s colleges. Those institutions are: Bryn Mawr College, Hollins University, Mount Holyoke College and Smith College. My analysis includes how these policies both perpetuate, and reinforce harmful gender and sex binaries. Additionally, my research explores how these policies work to create an environment that ultimately does not best serve trans, nor cisgendered students. By calling on scholarship by …

Suspicion Encoded: Women Of Color And Biometric Technology In The United States, Lilith A. Saylor Jan 2021

Suspicion Encoded: Women Of Color And Biometric Technology In The United States, Lilith A. Saylor

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This paper explores the commodification of privacy through biometric technology in the United States. It examines the impact of this technology on poor women of color (WOC), arguing that poor WOC face intersectional discrimination based on the convergence of sex, race, and class in their identities. I highlight the unique and powerful intrusion of biometric technology into the lives of poor WOC, and argue that the connection between data and the physical body created through biometric data has formed an environment in which the state wields unrestricted control in all spheres over the privacy of poor WOC.

The Boy In The Mirror: A Tale Of Radical Queer Muslim Liberation, Shariq I. Farooqi, Khansa Noor Jan 2021

The Boy In The Mirror: A Tale Of Radical Queer Muslim Liberation, Shariq I. Farooqi, Khansa Noor

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This photo-series & its connected narrative captures the ornate reality of identifying as a Queer Muslim of color. The photos were beautifully curated by a photographer and dear friend of mine, Khansa Noor. The images are meant to visually conceptualize how queerness can manifest outwardly in one's bodily expressions and demeanor. The guilt, shame, and relief that I described in the narrative translates intimately in my brown skin and my movements. Both pieces merge to illustrate the layers of queer Muslim survival in concealing one's queerness while simultaneously remaining unequivocally bold in queer spaces.

Effects Of Estuary-Wide Seagrass Loss On Fish Populations, Jennifer K. O'Leary, Maurice C. Goodman, Ryan K. Walter, Kariss Willits, Daniel J. Pondella Jan 2021

Effects Of Estuary-Wide Seagrass Loss On Fish Populations, Jennifer K. O'Leary, Maurice C. Goodman, Ryan K. Walter, Kariss Willits, Daniel J. Pondella

Physics

Globally, habitat loss in coastal marine systems is a major driver of species decline, and estuaries are particularly susceptible to loss. Along the United States Pacific coast, monospecific eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds form the major estuarine vegetated habitat. In Morro Bay, California, eelgrass experienced an unprecedented decline of > 95%, from 139 ha in 2007 to < 6 ha by 2017. Fish populations were compared before and after the eelgrass decline using trawl surveys. Beach seines surveys were also conducted during the post-decline period to characterize species within and outside of remnant eelgrass beds. While the estuary-wide loss of eelgrass did not result in fewer fish or less biomass, it led to changes in species composition. The post-eelgrass decline period was characterized by increases in flatfish (mainly Citharichthys stigmaeus) and staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus), and decreases in habitat specialists including bay pipefish (Syngnathus leptorhynchus) and shiner perch (Cymatogaster aggregata). There were similar trends inside and outside of remnant eelgrass patches. These findings support evidence across multiple ecosystems suggesting that the predominance of habitat-specialists predicts whether or not habitat loss leads to an overall decline in fish abundance. In addition, loss of critical habitats across seascapes can restrict population connectivity and lead to range contraction. For bay pipefish, the loss of eelgrass in Morro Bay is likely to create a population biogeographic divide. Currently, Morro Bay is dominated by flatfish and sculpins, and the longevity of this new ecosystem state will depend on future eelgrass recovery dynamics supported by ecosystem-based management approaches.

Performance Of Non-Contact Flow Meters In Irrigation Canals And Surface Drains, Kyle Feist, Jack Evans, Zack Markow, Stuart Styles Jan 2021

Performance Of Non-Contact Flow Meters In Irrigation Canals And Surface Drains, Kyle Feist, Jack Evans, Zack Markow, Stuart Styles

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Flow measurement is an important component of modern irrigation delivery systems. As irrigation projects are modernized, flow measurement devices are being installed in more non-traditional applications. Some applications feature a combination of characteristics that eliminate traditional flow measurement structures. Furthermore, as regulations obligate more districts to report real time diversions, redundant flow measurement devices using different methods or technologies become necessary to reduce the potential for temporary gaps in diversion data. In these cases, non-contact type flow measurement devices may be of interest. Two non-contact flow meters were installed at different irrigation district canals. Data was collected from the non-contact …

Effect Of Simulated Storage And Distribution On Listeria Innocua Growth In Non-Traditional Salad Ingredients, Emma L. Sandquist Jan 2021

Effect Of Simulated Storage And Distribution On Listeria Innocua Growth In Non-Traditional Salad Ingredients, Emma L. Sandquist

Master's Theses

The fresh-cut produce industry has seen expansive growth in recent years, to meet consumer demand ready-to-eat (RTE) salads have included the use of non-traditional ingredients. Uncommon ingredients include beet greens, kale, broccoli stalk, and Brussels sprouts, since these ingredients have not historically been consumed raw, potential food safety issues should be reassessed. Current processing technologies include produce washes that can reduce microbial levels but do not eradicate all populations. The lack of a kill step in produce processing emphasizes the need to minimize pathogen contamination during production and growth during a product’s shelf life. Listeria monocytogenes, a leading cause …

Estimating Food Waste Due To Food Safety Recalls And Investigating Ways To Minimize Negative Impacts, Mykayla Latronica Jan 2021

Estimating Food Waste Due To Food Safety Recalls And Investigating Ways To Minimize Negative Impacts, Mykayla Latronica

Master's Theses

For years the issue of food waste has been recognized and quantified; however, food safety issues often go unrecognized as a source of food waste. One objective of this research is to estimate quantities and monetary value of fruits and vegetables implicated in food safety recalls, and thus wasted. Using publicly available data we identified all recalls involving vegetable or fruit commodities contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, pathogenic E. coli, or Salmonella during 2015-2018. When quantities were provided, monetary value of recalled product was calculated using USDA ERS 2016 average retail prices. Although data limitations only allowed analysis of …
