The West End: Redevelopment Of The Westminster Mall, Christopher Cortez
The West End: Redevelopment Of The Westminster Mall, Christopher Cortez
City and Regional Planning
The purpose of this project is to create a redevelopment plan for the Westminster Mall in Westminster, CA that will successfully reinvigorate itself as an active and vibrant center for the city.
Redeveloping malls and the property they sit on is a prominent planning issue. Malls are becoming less popular commercial centers and must adapt to fulfill the local community’s needs. This can be accomplished through changes to the volume of commercial space and introducing new land uses, such as multifamily residential and open space, all of which are planning methods.
This project will explore how North American Malls, such …

Ecg Arrhythmia Classification Using Discrete Wavelet Transformation, Hannah E. Chookaszian, Nathan D. Diekema
Electrical Engineering
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the highest leading cause of death worldwide with an approximate 17.9 million related deaths every year according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Electrocardiographic (EKG or ECG) signals are electrical signals measured in the heart and are the main indicator for pre-existing cardiac conditions. The application of deep learning methods such as artificial neural networks (ANN) will assist in the automated detection and classification of ECG signals. The current methods for ECG analysis are lacking in accuracy and reliability considering the level of risk involved with CVDs and the importance of a correct diagnosis. Clinicians use …

Tensile Environment Chamber, Cameron Ngai, Trent Hamilton, Mitchell Carroll, Jack Molitor
Mechanical Engineering
This project created the heating system, cooling system, and control system for an environmental chamber for a tensile test machine in the Cal Poly Composites Lab. This chamber allows for students to test material properties under a variety of thermal conditions. This project was done in collaboration with a team working on the structural aspect of the chamber. While consumer environmental chambers are on the market, they often cost more than $50,000. Additionally, our chamber conforms to further size and weight constraints. Because of this constraint, many conventional techniques and components used for these chambers are not feasible for our …

Dual Motor Drive System For Formula Sae Electric Race Car, Bryan D. Neill, Jackson T. Mcfaul, Cole T. Andrews, Isaiah D. Penzell
Mechanical Engineering
This paper serves as the Final Design Report (FDR) for the senior project developed by our team. This FDR builds on our CDR, in which the main deliverable was the detailed design of a planetary gearbox delivering a 5:1 reduction to be mated to an Emrax 188 motor. This planetary gearbox would allow for the possibility of implementing a dual-motor torque-vectoring rear-wheel-drive system in Cal Poly Racing’s electric FSAE car, which has demonstrated in simulation to yield significant performance gain over the current single motor/mechanical LSD system. As this project’s scope is purely mechanical, the intent is for the Cal …
“Beychella:” Beyoncé’S Homecoming To A Futuristic Queer Utopian, Jolie V. Brownell
“Beychella:” Beyoncé’S Homecoming To A Futuristic Queer Utopian, Jolie V. Brownell
sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies
Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance and 2019 Homecoming film set the stage for a radical Black queer reimagining. Yet, how can Beyoncé—who is straight—be located within a queer critique? In this paper, I argue that through a radical and political expansion of queer, the creative deployment of dis/identification, and the unapologetic expression of the erotic, Beyoncé performs an embodiment of queer of color critique. These creative gestures within “Beychella” invite viewers into a queer futuristic utopian and provide new creative modes to politically inhabit, resist, and reimagine interlocking systems of oppression.

The Medicalisation Of Gender Nonconformity Through Language: A Keywords Analysis, Angelo Cosma Galluzzo
The Medicalisation Of Gender Nonconformity Through Language: A Keywords Analysis, Angelo Cosma Galluzzo
sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies
Language is an important part of the way gender nonconformity is legislated and medicalised. In 2012, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) changed the nomenclature of the ‘gender identity disorder’ (GID) to ‘gender dysphoria in the ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to reduce the social stigma attached to transgender identities. While the recognition of gender nonconformity by the medical authorities has led to some beneficial consequences, scholars have shown that the language of pathology has narrowed the definitions of gender nonconformity and has created social stigma. I use the web pages of five major health providers of English-speaking …

Trust Transfer And The Intention To Use App-Enabled Carpooling Service, Minhua Wu, Stern Neill
Marketing
In China, with the rapid dissemination of mobile communications technology along with congested traffic and increasingly expensive transportation costs, consumers are turning to smartphone-enabled, ride-sharing services. Sharing economy requires trust in strangers. Based on trust transfer theory and a dyadic conceptualization of trust from cognitive to affective, the purpose of this study is to examine trust building through the use of Didi, a third-party, ride-sharing platform that mediates exchanges among strangers.

Library Scholarship
The LibRAT Program at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo was first piloted in 2010. Although the program has expanded in scope and depth, the key to its continued success has been a commitment to core principles discovered during its initial launch. To this day, the LibRATs (Library Reference Assistance Technicians) form a small cadre of intensively trained students who are treated with respect as adults and as undergraduates. Communication, learning, and responsibility are multidirectional, and the LibRATs are full partners in the success of the program.
The original design of the program was to post students in …
Madrona: A Micro-Geography Of The 1960s And 1970s, Brett B. Bodemer
Madrona: A Micro-Geography Of The 1960s And 1970s, Brett B. Bodemer
Library Scholarship
Drawing on personal memory, detailed mapping, and archival research, this memoir explores the lived experience of growing up in Seattle’s Madrona neighborhood in the 1960s and early 1970s. A neighborhood historically characterized as both integrated and segregated, this book grapples directly with the truth of both statements. The author’s childhood was spent on a street where neighbors across the street were nearly all White, while neighbors astride the alley behind were nearly all Black. The lines of friendship and community interaction, however, were not so neatly defined, and changed markedly over time.
To avoid a mere rehearsal of well-entrenched memories, …

Experimental Testing Of A Lightly Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall, Jerry Hue Truong Luong, Rory Sebastian De Sevilla
Experimental Testing Of A Lightly Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall, Jerry Hue Truong Luong, Rory Sebastian De Sevilla
Architectural Engineering: Graduate Reports
This project report summarizes the findings of a half-scale laboratory test on a slender lightly reinforced concrete (LRC) shear wall subjected to cyclic loading. LRC shear walls, specifically those of pre-1980’s type design, have longitudinal and horizontal reinforcement ratios near the code minimum, while often lacking confinement in the wall end-zones. These walls are thought to exhibit brittle compressive failure mechanisms such as rebar buckling or concrete crushing based on observations from past earthquakes. Non-ductile concrete buildings are a large contributor to earthquake losses around the globe, as noted in the San Fernando (1971) and Christchurch (2011) earthquakes, to name …
Strawberry Powdery Mildew Caused By Podosphaera Aphanis: Fungicide Resistance And Host Plant Resistance, Michael G. Palmer
Strawberry Powdery Mildew Caused By Podosphaera Aphanis: Fungicide Resistance And Host Plant Resistance, Michael G. Palmer
Master's Theses
Strawberry powdery mildew, caused by Podosphaera aphanis, affects leaves, fruit, and runners of strawberry plants. Infected leaves have reduced photosynthetic capability and infected fruit become unmarketable. Both of these factors translate to economic loss for the grower and therefore merit taking measures to control the disease. One objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance developed in populations of strawberry powdery mildew to chemical control measures. A fungicide assay was developed to evaluate the efficacy of six treatments (penthiopyrad, quinoxyfen, myclobutanil, trifloxystrobin, cyflufenamid, fluopyram + trifloxystrobin) for control of the disease. Nineteen isolates of strawberry powdery mildew were …

A Hydrologic Model Of The Northern Limb Of The San Luis Obispo Valley Aquifer By Use Of Comsol Multiphysics® Simulation Software, Claire Momberger
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
The passage of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act in 2014 by the State of California was the first of its kind in the State’s history to legislate the management of groundwater resources. This legislation is state-governed but locally and regionally implemented. The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act requires local water management agencies to create their own sustainable management plans for groundwater resources that meet state-defined sustainability goals 20 years after implementation. Such plans require hydrologic conceptual models that describe flow within the groundwater basin setting, predict use, and anticipate demand. The high-level detail of the hydrologic conceptual models requires the power …

Preliminary Survey Of Herbicide Environmental Fate And Transport In California And The Morro Bay Watershed Environment, Alexandra Carlson
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Seagrasses are rapidly declining around the globe as well as in Morro Bay, CA. Between 2007 and 2017, the Morro Bay Estuary experienced a 97% loss of seagrass meadows. The cause of the decline is unknown. A potential cause for the loss of seagrass meadows is the degradation of seagrass habitat in the bay because of contamination due to the use of herbicides. Some examples of herbicides used within the watershed include: Oxy uorfen, Diuron, Simazine, Napropamide, Oryzalin, Chlorthal-Dimethyl, Glyphosate and Tri uralin. Theses herbicides are all highly used within the watershed and are on the top 10 list for …
Seasonal Variability Of Upwelling And Downwelling Surface Current Patterns Near A Small Coastal Embayment, Nicholas Trautman
Seasonal Variability Of Upwelling And Downwelling Surface Current Patterns Near A Small Coastal Embayment, Nicholas Trautman
Physics
Upwelling in coastal embayments is important to a variety of physical and biological processes. Despite their ubiquity, circulation patterns in small bays (width and length scales ≤ 20 km) in eastern boundary current upwelling systems are relatively understudied compared to their larger counterparts. In this study, we apply a conditional averaging technique to investigate upwelling- and downwelling-driven circulation in a small coastal embayment located in Central California [San Luis Obispo (SLO) Bay]. We also investigate intraseasonal differences in the current patterns in SLO Bay. Conditional averaging reveals distinct intraseasonal differences and features that are obscured by traditional seasonal averages when …

Electrical Engineering
The technology of photovoltaics has been quickly evolving as we move toward a future with more clean energy. Energy conversion efficiency is key to making these systems the viable option amongst other sources of power. This project proposes a way to increase the power yield from a solar system by implementing smarter algorithms in the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) component of the system. MPPT is critical because environmental conditions may vary significantly for any given system due to irradiance and shading. The proposed method for MPPT utilizes a controller that uses swarm intelligence to do the power tracking.. This …

Oceanside Transit Center Transit-Oriented Development (Otc Tod): Revisioning North San Diego's County Transit Hub, Chad Johnston
City and Regional Planning
Many California coastal communities lack a supply of housing, produce high levels of greenhouse gas emissions by daily auto commuters but have existing local and commuter rail stations with large fields of parking surrounding it. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) integrates the building of housing, retail, office, and public space together focused around transit stations. This infill of development locates people within comfortable walking distance, usually within a quarter-mile, of a public trail transit station reducing automobile dependence for local trips or commuting for work.
The Oceanside Transit Center (OTC) is a major railway interchange, serving as a gateway to the San …

Dc-Dc Buck-Boost Converter Design For Energy Harvesting From Exercise Equipment, Nicholas Serres
Dc-Dc Buck-Boost Converter Design For Energy Harvesting From Exercise Equipment, Nicholas Serres
Electrical Engineering
This project aims to improve energy harvesting efficiency from an exercise machine. Exercise machine energy harvesting has a small immediate impact but can eventually have an immense impact. An elliptical exercise machine energy converter outputs 5V-60V whereas the microinverters require approximately 36V. The buck boost DC-DC converter bridges the gap between the microinverter and the elliptical machine. Increasing the buck-boost controller efficiency increases power production. Greater power efficiency gives the whole system more financial viability, and additionally makes it a greater sustainable energy source.
Programmable Battery Management System, Jason Erbert
Programmable Battery Management System, Jason Erbert
Electrical Engineering
Lithium batteries provide excellent energy storage capabilities at a relatively high density; however, precautions must be taken with these high energy devices to ensure safe operation. A battery management system (BMS) provides protection by monitoring cell and pack voltage levels and maintaining them in a specific range. They limit the output current and disable the output in extreme conditions. Most devices in the targeted power range (<1000W) do not allow the user to manipulate the values for maximum current, cut-off voltage, or other limits. This project introduces the Programmable BMS (PBMS), which instead allows the user to select these values through a physical interface. The interface displays measurements including pack voltage and output current, and it reports additional characteristics of interest such as the battery’s temperature, state of charge, and cumulative number of charge cycles. This level of access and control permits users to receive the maximum performance and safety from common lithium battery packs.

Although electricity is a necessity for nearly everything in daily life, many developing countries are unable to provide easy access to this utility. Often times within these developing countries, many renewable energy sources exist that are readily accessible to these same people that don’t have access to electricity within their homes, such as solar energy. However, the nature of renewable energy is that most renewable energy lacks consistency in power delivery throughout the day. An example of this is that solar energy isn’t available during the night. These small communities are often comprised of people that are familiar with each …
