Hierarchical Classification Of Deep-Sea Videos, Lubomir Stanchev, Hanson Egbert
Hierarchical Classification Of Deep-Sea Videos, Lubomir Stanchev, Hanson Egbert
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This research is based on previous research that proposes the use of AI algorithms to automatically annotate deep-sea videos [1]. Regardless of whether a deep-sea video is annotated automatically or by a human expert, some frames are difficult to annotate because one or more objects may be ambiguous to interpret. For example, the Funiculina and Umbellula Lindahli are two types of sea pens that are difficult to distinguish. Similarly, an object may be easily identified as a fish, but the type of fish may be difficult to determine. For these types of circumstances, we propose a hierarchical classification algorithm that …

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Our project documented, in extensive detail, the liquid crystalline (LC) assembly pathway from solution to solid state in the supramolecular complexes of the mixed ionic-electronic conducting polymers (MIECPs) prepared from carboxylated poly(3-alkylthiophene) and ionic liquid surfactant. Using UV-visible spectroscopy we have shown that the complexation is accompanied by the surfactochromism showing colorimetric response and conformational transitions as a function of the IL surfactant mole ratio. Additionally, we have demonstrated via Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), that the equimolar solution exhibits rodlike conformation and its hydrogel spontaneously forms a 2D smectic LC mesophase with a lamellar periodicity. Defect-free LC domains were produced …

Reverse Engineering And Enhancement Of Automobile Infotainment System, Cole Brinsfield
Reverse Engineering And Enhancement Of Automobile Infotainment System, Cole Brinsfield
Electrical Engineering
In 2011, luxury cars were released with displays built into the center. With modern computing power and technology such as Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, these older infotainment systems degrade the value of cars that are otherwise comparable to 2021 models. This project upgrades the infotainment system of one such car, a 2011 Infiniti G37. Through use of an additional microcomputer in the car, an infotainment upgrade can be achieved. This upgraded infotainment adds navigation, wireless audio, and data display capabilities to the car, while maintaining the functionality of the stock infotainment. While customized for the 2011 Infiniti G37, the …

We carried out spectroscopic monitoring of 21 low-redshift Seyfert 1 galaxies using the Kast double spectrograph on the 3 m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory from 2016 April to 2017 May. Targeting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with luminosities of λLλ(5100 Å) ≈ 1044 erg s−1 and predicted Hβ lags of ∼20–30 days or black hole masses of 107–108.5 M⊙, our campaign probes luminosity-dependent trends in broad-line region (BLR) structure and dynamics as well as to improve calibrations for single-epoch estimates of quasar black hole masses. Here we present the first results from the campaign, including …

Bononia Docet: Marcantonio Raimondi, Humanism, And Artisanal Culture In Renaissance Bologna, Giancarlo Fiorenza
Art and Design
A new interpretation of an enigmatic engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi from his early career in Bologna sheds light on the artist’s cultural connections during his formative years. With its assimilation of alchemical, poetic, and hieroglyphic imagery, Raimondi’s engraving points to a nexus of activities in Bologna that clustered around intellectual circles and artists’ workshops. In particular, the artist appears to have engaged directly with the famed Bolognese physician Alessandro Achillini in order to develop his novel composition, a relationship which has previously gone unnoticed. Raimondi’s initial vocation as a goldsmith, together with his training under Francesco Francia, about which we …

Associations Between Mothers’ Use Of Food To Soothe, Feeding Mode, And Infant Weight During Early Infancy, Megan K. Hupp, Peggy C. Papathakis, Suzanne Phelan, Alison K. Ventura
Kinesiology and Public Health
Weight status and rate of weight gain in the first six months postpartum are strong predictors of later obesity; thus, infant feeding practices are an important target for obesity prevention efforts. The use of food to soothe (FTS) is associated with less-favorable eating habits and weight outcomes for older infants and children. However, few studies have examined correlates of use of FTS during early infancy. The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore associations between use of FTS and infant weight status in the first 6 months postpartum. A secondary aim was to identify the combination of maternal …

An Analysis Of Thermal Comfort Perception In Cal Poly's Math & Science Building, Pouria Ali Fariborzi
Master's Theses
Since Americans, on average, spend approximately 90% of their time indoors according to the EPA, it is crucial to provide room occupants with the best, most comfortable, and healthiest possible environment, which is known as Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). This thesis aims to identify how we can provide comfortable learning environments to improve student success. To determine the best possible environment for occupants, a model of the Math & Science Building was developed, validated, and modified using DesignBuilder. In addition, we compared thermal comfort surveys to actual measured conditions for some classrooms. Analysis indicates that students prefer a cooler thermal …

Review Of Shelly Kagan's How To Count Animals, More Or Less, Benjamin A. Elmore
Review Of Shelly Kagan's How To Count Animals, More Or Less, Benjamin A. Elmore
Between the Species
In How to Count Animals, more or less, Shelly Kagan sketches and argues for a hierarchical account of moral status. Although the book is fairly lengthy at 304 pages of text, Kagan is correct in calling it a sketch, since what this book provides us with is a foray into one aspect that a comprehensive ethical theory must include, in his view, if it is to be plausible. Even so, the work that he does, if one accepts hierarchy, opens up many different avenues to be further pursued in animal ethics.
The Question Of Veganism, The Dangers Of Moral Extensionism, And A Pragmatist Ecofeminist Alternative, Erin Mckenna
The Question Of Veganism, The Dangers Of Moral Extensionism, And A Pragmatist Ecofeminist Alternative, Erin Mckenna
Between the Species
In this paper I argue that the framework of moral extensionism relies on human exceptionalism and human centeredness. I discuss the dangers of human exceptionalism and human centeredness using the work of ecofeminist philosophers Val Plumwood, Carol Adams, Lori Gruen, A. Breeze Harper, and Lisa Kemmerer. These ecofeminists each articulate alternative approaches to human relations with other animal beings. There are tensions among these alternatives, though, and I use a pragmatist perspective to interrogate their different positions on how other animal beings should or should not figure into the diets of human beings. I will argue that we need a …

A Reflection On The Scope Of Feminist Pedagogy In Indian Tertiary Education, Sreemoyee Sarkar, Anirban Debsarma
Feminist Pedagogy
The Indian National Education Policy seek to restructure and standardize the higher education institution (HEI) curriculum and look forward to a futuristic, meritocratic, equitable, and multidisciplinary pedagogy. Present work critically analyses the scope of Feminist Pedagogy in the Indian higher education scenario, in this regard. It would try to offer an active participatory teaching-learning strategy to dismantle the existing gender hierarchy and oppression in Indian HEIs.

The Tragedy Of Gregory And Sampson: Teaching Romeo And Juliet’S Opening Scene, Heather G.S. Johnson
Feminist Pedagogy
Romeo and Juliet is as much about hate as it is about love. The tragedy focuses on a kind of toxic masculinity that thrives on aggression and anger and that turns communities into battlefields, men into adversaries, and women into prizes or prey. This short critical commentary zooms in on the conversation between Gregory and Sampson at the beginning of Act I.

“Sometimes I Have To Announce My Feminism And I Don’T Mind Doing That”: Instructor Self-Disclosure Of Feminism In The Classroom, Elaina Ross, Kristopher D. Copeland
Feminist Pedagogy
An instructor’s self-disclosure is an important source of connectedness for students. The goal of this article was to describe how college instructors self-disclosed and discussed feminism. Qualitative interviews with 19 participants yielded findings that indicated a variety of communicative strategies utilized by instructors to self-disclose feminist beliefs, such as verbally stating one was a feminist to nonverbally communicating messages connected to course content. Further, an instructor’s feminist beliefs shaped the pedagogy implemented to discuss feminism in the classroom. Findings suggest self-disclosure of feminist beliefs were valuable in the classroom. Additionally, specific communication strategies to employ to self-disclose feminism in the …

Extending The Impairment Argument To Sentient Non-Human Animals, Christopher A. Bobier
Extending The Impairment Argument To Sentient Non-Human Animals, Christopher A. Bobier
Between the Species
I defend a new argument against raising and killing sentient non-human animals for food: It is immoral to non-lethally impair sentient non-human animals for pleasure, and since raising and killing sentient animals for gustatory pleasure impairs them to a much greater degree, that also is immoral. This argument is structurally analogous to Perry Hendricks’s impairment argument for the immorality of abortion. Proponents of the anti-abortion argument have to be, on grounds of moral consistency, proponents of the anti-meat eating argument: the very same considerations they appeal to to justify their anti-abortion impairment argument apply to the impairment argument against raising …
