The Future Of Media, Social Media, And Sports Media, Garrett Kramer Brown Feb 2022

The Future Of Media, Social Media, And Sports Media, Garrett Kramer Brown

Journalism

I hope that the findings of this project help guide and propel student media on how to create content tailored for social media. In my experience at times, it can seem like student media tends to throw everything at the wall and will just see what sticks. While that is sort of the nature of the business that doesn’t mean smarter methods can’t be taken. Also, it specifically gives guidelines to sports coverage, again, in my experience, it seems to me colligate sports coverage seems to be very stuck in their ways, which is not necessarily bad but at the …

Effects Of Intertidal Position On The Capacity For Anaerobic Metabolism And Thermal Stress Response In The Common Acorn Barnacle, Balanus Glandula, Kyra Anderson Feb 2022

Effects Of Intertidal Position On The Capacity For Anaerobic Metabolism And Thermal Stress Response In The Common Acorn Barnacle, Balanus Glandula, Kyra Anderson

Master's Theses

Intertidal habitats are characterized by dynamic, tidally-driven fluctuations in abiotic and biotic factors. Many of the environmental stressors that vary across the intertidal (e.g., temperature, oxygen, food availability, predation pressure) are strong drivers of metabolic rate in ectotherms. As such, we predicted that there may be pronounced differences in the metabolic and stress physiology of conspecific sessile invertebrates occupying at different relative tidal heights. The common acorn barnacle Balanus glandula represents an ideal model organism in which to investigate the possibility of tidal height-dependent physiological differences, owing to their wide distribution in the intertidal zone and their eurytolerant nature. In …

Characterization, Design, And Optimization Of Dual-Purpose Wind Turbines And Frost Protection Fans, Ethan Narad Feb 2022

Characterization, Design, And Optimization Of Dual-Purpose Wind Turbines And Frost Protection Fans, Ethan Narad

Master's Theses

This thesis report outlines the creation of a MATLAB tool to design reversible machines that can function as both wind turbines and as agricultural frost protection fans. Frost protection fans are used to prevent crop loss during radiative freeze events during which a temperature inversion is present. Such a dual-purpose machine fundamentally has the constraint that it must use symmetric airfoils, so a suite of tools for automatically designing an optimized wind turbine blade with symmetric airfoils using the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory approach is presented. The BEM code is then re-derived and adapted for use with a frost …

Integration Of Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy For Multichannel Cell Culture Measurement, Conard Chan Feb 2022

Integration Of Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy For Multichannel Cell Culture Measurement, Conard Chan

Master's Theses

ELECTROCHEMICAL IMPEDANCE SPECTROSCOPY (EIS) has been widely used to study the electrical properties of biological material due to its non-invasive nature and experimental reliability. However, most of the precision impedance analyzers used in EIS only provide single- or two-channel measurements which are inadequate for larger-scale multiplexed measurements, such as those found in modern microfluidic cell culture experiments. The Biomedical Microsystems Laboratory has developed a 16-channel cell culture platform with integrated electrode arrays for monitoring cell growth and electrical properties (i.e., the so-called “electrical phenotype”). In this paper, a system consisting of a 16-channel solid-state analog multiplexer (MUX)paired with a low-cost, …

As-932-22 Resolution On Updating Retention Of Exam And Gradebook Policy, Academic Senate Executive Committee Jan 2022

As-932-22 Resolution On Updating Retention Of Exam And Gradebook Policy, Academic Senate Executive Committee

Academic Senate Resolutions

Aligns Cal Poly’s exam retention policy with the CSU policy, specifically with sections 4.2.20, 4.2.22, and 4.2.24 of the CSU policy. It also resolves that in all cases, either digital or physical retention of records and materials is permissible. In the case of final projects falling under 4.2.20 that produce large physical artifacts, retention of a digital record such as a photo may be appropriate. And it resolves that the language in the appropriate section of the Academic Programs website shall be updated.

On The Oval Shapes Of Beach Stones, Theodore P. Hill Jan 2022

On The Oval Shapes Of Beach Stones, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

This article introduces a new stochastic non-isotropic frictional abrasion model, in the form of a single short partial integro-differential equation, to show how frictional abrasion alone of a stone on a planar beach might lead to the oval shapes observed empirically. The underlying idea in this theory is the intuitive observation that the rate of ablation at a point on the surface of the stone is proportional to the product of the curvature of the stone at that point and the likelihood the stone is in contact with the beach at that point. Specifically, key roles in this new model …

Living Library Digital Exhibit, Emma Davis, Jaime Ding, Catherine J. Trujillo Jan 2022

Living Library Digital Exhibit, Emma Davis, Jaime Ding, Catherine J. Trujillo

Creative Works

The living wall was designed around three main concepts: Sustainability, community, and beauty. Recycled and repurposed industrial material composed from pallets makes up the frame while plants soften and give life to the display. The student designers invited the community to interact with the wall as a way to make fresh produce and plants grown on campus available for people to enjoy. We often forget to look around and savor the natural world we live in. By inviting nature and sustainability into our living and studying space we are reminded that the world is beautiful and worth protecting.

Me 343 Heat Transfer Laboratory, 6th Edition

Mechanical Engineering Lab Manuals

Welcome to the documentation used to describe and conduct ten heat transfer experiments located in the Thermal Sciences Laboratory in Building 13, Room 203, at Cal Poly State University. All of the experiments are designed to illustrate many of the concepts that are presented in undergraduate thermodynamics and heat transfer classes. The first objective of each lab is to provide students with hands-on experience with thermal science experiments. This includes working with standard facilities and instrumentation commonly found in thermal science laboratories. The second objective of each lab is to learn how to use experimentally collected data to either validate …

Chismearte, Catherine J. Trujillo, Jessica Eng Jan 2022

Chismearte, Catherine J. Trujillo, Jessica Eng

Creative Works

ChismeArte is a magazine of hybrid, radical street art, Barrio iconography, and avant-garde literature that questioned, expanded, and experimented with the possibilities of Chicano urban identity.

The ChismeArte Digital Experience is a collaborative effort with Robert E. Kennedy Library and Cal Poly faculty, staff, and students. The project shares the Kennedy Library 2008 onsite exhibition “ChismeArte ¡Y Que! Expanding Los Angeles’ Chicano Aesthetic” as well as scholarly access to the magazine archival editions, and an anthology of voices, remembrances, and interpretations inspired by ChismeArte.
