The Public Demand For Smoking Bans, William J. Boyes, Michael L. Marlow Aug 1994

The Public Demand For Smoking Bans, William J. Boyes, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Smoking bans are gaining widespread support in the United States and other countries. While supporters argue that bans are necessary to resolve market failures associated with negative externalities, the Coase Theorem predicts that, under various conditions, private markets internalize negative externalities. We examine the smoking issue within the framework of the Coase Theorem and hypothesize that smoking bans misallocate air space resources shared by smokers and nonsmokers. Because smoking bans shift ownership of scarce resources, they are also hypothesized to transfer income from one party (smokers) to another party (nonsmokers). Supporting evidence for these hypotheses is provided by an examination …

Navel Orangeworm (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Development In Sunburned Walnuts, Mark D. Shelton, Donald W. Davis Aug 1994

Navel Orangeworm (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Development In Sunburned Walnuts, Mark D. Shelton, Donald W. Davis

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

Navel orangeworrns, Amyelois transitella (Walker), completed development in sunburned walnuts late in the growing season, but moths did not emerge until after harvest. Sunburned walnuts were not attractive to ovipositing moths until considerable hull damage occurred. Only sunburned walnuts with undamaged kernels were suitable for larval development. Navel orangeworrn infestation levels up to 38% were recorded in sunburned walnut samples from the San Joaquin Valley, CA. Nut hull tissue damaged by sunburn was not selected over undamaged hull tissue for moth oviposition. Mean kernel temperatures of sunburned walnuts were higher than both undamaged walnuts and ambient air temperature. Premature hullsplit …

The Role Of Enzyme Activation State In Limiting Carbon Assimilation Under Variable Light Conditions, Gretchen F. Sassenrath-Cole, Robert W. Pearcy, Scott J. Steinmaus Aug 1994

The Role Of Enzyme Activation State In Limiting Carbon Assimilation Under Variable Light Conditions, Gretchen F. Sassenrath-Cole, Robert W. Pearcy, Scott J. Steinmaus

Biological Sciences

The mechanisms regulating transient photosynthesis by soybean (Glycine max) leaves were examined by comparing photosynthetic rates and carbon reduction cycle enzyme activities under flashing (saturating 1 s lightflecks separated by low photon flux density (PFD) periods of different durations) and continuous PFD. At the same mean PFD, the mean photosynthetic rates were reduced under flashing as compared to continuous light. However, as the duration of the low PFD period lengthened, the CO2 assimilation attributable to a lightfleck increased. This enhanced lightfleck CO2 assimilation was accounted for by a greater postillumination CO2 fixation occurring after the …

Disparate Rates Of Molecular Evolution In Cospeciating Hosts And Parasites, M. S. Hafner, P. D. Sudman, F. X. Villablanca, T. A. Spradling, J. W. Demastes, S. A. Nadler Aug 1994

Disparate Rates Of Molecular Evolution In Cospeciating Hosts And Parasites, M. S. Hafner, P. D. Sudman, F. X. Villablanca, T. A. Spradling, J. W. Demastes, S. A. Nadler

Biological Sciences

DNA sequences for the gene encoding mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I in a group of rodents (pocket gophers) and their ectoparasites (chewing lice) provide evidence for cospeciation and reveal different rates of molecular evolution in the hosts and their parasites. The overall rate of nucleotide substitution (both silent and replacement changes) is approximately three times higher in lice, and the rate of synonymous substitution (based on analysis of fourfold degenerate sites) is approximately an order of magnitude greater in lice. The difference in synonymous substitution rate between lice and gophers correlates with a difference of similar magnitude in generation times.

On The Relationship Between Convergence In Distribution And Convergence Of Expected Extremes, Theodore P. Hill, M. C. Spruill

Research Scholars in Residence

It is well known that the expected values {Mk(X)}, k ≤ 1, of the k-maximal order statistics of an integrable random variable X uniquely determine the distribution of X. The main result in this paper is that if {Xn}, n ≥ 1, is a sequence of integrable random variables with limn -> ∞ Mk(Xn) = αk for all k ≥ 1, then there exists a random variable X with Mk(X) = αk for all k ≥ 1 and …

An Evaluation Of The Ontario Farm Business Management Association Program, Wayne H. Howard, Glen C. Filson Jul 1994

An Evaluation Of The Ontario Farm Business Management Association Program, Wayne H. Howard, Glen C. Filson

Agribusiness

The Ontario Farm Business Management Association (FBMA) program was initiated to improve the business management skills of Ontario red meat producers. The program has three aims: • to increase management skills on the farm •to increase management skills in the private sector • to help farmers make use of private sector advice. Two methods were used to evaluate the program. First, FBMA members and other red meat producers were surveyed about their farm and personal characteristics as well as use farm records and information sources. Second, focus groups were held with the FBMA field persons. Results indicate that membership in …

Monolithic Concrete Irrigation Pipe, Charles M. Burt, John M. Wegener Jul 1994

Monolithic Concrete Irrigation Pipe, Charles M. Burt, John M. Wegener

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Monolithic concrete pipe (also known as "Cast-in-Place Concrete Pipe" (CIPCP) or Cast-In-Place Pipe (CIPP)) is widely used in some regions for purposes such as storm, sewer, or irrigation pipelines. The earliest use of CIPCP was in 1922 in the Turlock Irrigation District of California. It is reported by The Sierra Group (Sierra, 1991) that there are over 15 million linear feet (4.6 million linear meters) of CIPCP under various applications. Nevertheless, many irrigation engineers, especially outside the U.S., are unaware of CIPCP. Monolithic concrete irrigation pipe is seldom mentioned in irrigation design literature. This paper has been written to familiarize …

Living Mulches Suppress Aphids In Broccoli, Michael J. Costello, Miguel A. Altieri Jul 1994

Living Mulches Suppress Aphids In Broccoli, Michael J. Costello, Miguel A. Altieri

Horticulture and Crop Science

A living mulch combines an annual crop with a cover crop to provide pest control and soil protection. Results of a study in the Salinas Valley show cabbage aphid infestation can be lowered on broccoli grown in living mulches compared to clean cultivation, possible because light reflectance patterns are less attractive to incoming aphids. Early and intense mowing of the cover crop and adequate irrigation maintained broccoli yield in living mulches relative to clean cultivation. Lack of specialized equipment is the main limitation to the commercial application of living mulches at this time.
