Minimax-Optimal Strategies For The Best-Choice Problem When A Bound Is Known For The Expected Number Of Objects, Theodore P. Hill, D. P. Kennedy Jul 1994

Minimax-Optimal Strategies For The Best-Choice Problem When A Bound Is Known For The Expected Number Of Objects, Theodore P. Hill, D. P. Kennedy

Research Scholars in Residence

For the best-choice (or secretary) problem with an unknown number N of objects, minimax-optimal strategies for the observer and minimax distributions for N are derived under the assumption that N is a random variable with expected value at most M, where M is known. The solution is derived as a special case of the situation where N is constrained by Ef(N) ≤ M, where f is increasing with f(i)-f(i-1) convex.

Comparison Of Magnetic Properties Of Polysaccharide Iron Complex (P.I.C.) And Ferritin, M. E. Y. Mohie-Eldin, Richard B. Frankel, L. Gunther Jul 1994

Comparison Of Magnetic Properties Of Polysaccharide Iron Complex (P.I.C.) And Ferritin, M. E. Y. Mohie-Eldin, Richard B. Frankel, L. Gunther

Physics

The synthetic polysaccharide iron complex (PIC) molecule has been suggested as a ‘biomimic’, i.e. a counterpart, to the naturally occurring biological molecule ferritin with respect to its magnetic properties based on the identification of ferrihydrite as the major mineral in both. Magnetization measurements were used to investigate the magnetic properties of PIC in relation to those of ferritin, as well as to identify differences in such properties between naturally occurring ferritin, which we designate here as Ferritin I, and ferritin with an artificially high content of Fe2+ ions bound to its core, which is designated here as Ferritin II. …

Los Osos, California: A Proposal For A Sustainable Community With A Sustainable Watershed, Margot Mcdonald, Jennifer Rennick Jun 1994

Los Osos, California: A Proposal For A Sustainable Community With A Sustainable Watershed, Margot Mcdonald, Jennifer Rennick

Architecture

In January 1993, the American Institute of Architects and the International Union of Architects announced the "Sustainable Community Solutions" ideas competition. This paper describes principles and concepts illustrated in an award winning design competition entry based in Los Osos, California. The focus of this entry is the transformation of a suburban bedroom community on the California coast into a vital ecological city designed around its watershed. This paper outlines sustainable design strategies that encompass the full spectrum of environmental design issues at the full range of scales; global, bioregional, regional, site, building, and component as proposed by the design team.

Grassland Basin Irrigation And Drainage Study, Stuart W. Styles, Dennis Westcot, Dr. Charles M. Burt, Ross Steensen Jun 1994

Grassland Basin Irrigation And Drainage Study, Stuart W. Styles, Dennis Westcot, Dr. Charles M. Burt, Ross Steensen

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This paper summarizes a project that analyzed the district irrigation efficiency for six subareas of the Grassland Basin roughly representing 80,000 acres on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley near Firebaugh, California. The objectives of this project were to: • Determine the district irrigation efficiency for the six subareas. • Update district drainage policies and water reuse. • Update the geographical information system (GIS). • Perform a pre-plant irrigation efficiency analysis. • Establish a relationship between the drainage volumes and the district irrigation efficiency. • Determine the maximum district irrigation efficiency attainable. • Determine the impact of optimizing …

Evaluating Strength & Energy Requirements For Workers Picking Vegetables, R. A. Cavaletto, J. Miles, J. Meyers, J. Mehlschau

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

The paper discusses the need to obtain field data to evaluate the strength and energy requirements for workers picking a variety of vegetables. This information is central to the evaluation of hazards related to repetitive motion, excessive stress, and fatigue. Results can be used to select activities which should be targeted for future engineering design projects. Preliminary data from a commercial broccoli harvesting operation is included.

Comparison Of The Environmental Effects Of Aerobic And Anaerobic Composting Technologies, Samuel A. Vigil, George Tchobanoglous Jun 1994

Comparison Of The Environmental Effects Of Aerobic And Anaerobic Composting Technologies, Samuel A. Vigil, George Tchobanoglous

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The biological conversion of yard wastes and municipal solid waste by aerobic composting is an established technology. Anaerobic conversion of these wastes is less practiced but is being widely advocated for the next generation of bioconversion systems. Although the operational characteristics of both types of systems is well known, there is a lack of quantifiable data in the literature on the environmental effects of these technologies. It is widely assumed that they are environmentally benign, especially as compared to other processing and conversion technologies such as incineration or mechanical processing. The process microbiology, design, and operational characteristics of aerobic and …

Pinching Theorems For Teardrops And Footballs Of Revolution, Joseph E. Borzellino Jun 1994

Pinching Theorems For Teardrops And Footballs Of Revolution, Joseph E. Borzellino

Mathematics

We give explicit optimal curvature pinching constants for the Riemannian (p, q)- football orbifolds under the assumption that they are realised as surfaces of revolution in 3. We show that sufficiently pinched sectional curvature assumptions imply that a (p, q)-football must be good.

A Model For Determining Retail Product Category Assortment And Shelf Space Allocation, Norm Borin, Paul W. Farris, James R. Freeland Jun 1994

A Model For Determining Retail Product Category Assortment And Shelf Space Allocation, Norm Borin, Paul W. Farris, James R. Freeland

Marketing

We develop a category management model to aid retailers in the space constrained decisions of which products to stock (assortment) and how much shelf space to allocate to those products. The model is formulated as a constrained optimization problem with two basic decision variables: assortment and allocation of space to the items in the assortment. The non-linearities in the objective function and the zero-one decision variables disallow a closed form solution. We develop a heuristic solution procedure based on simulated annealing and test it on a problem with a known optimum. We also apply the technique to a larger problem …

A Current-Mode Fdnr Circuit Element Using Capacitive Gyrators, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Michael M. Green May 1994

A Current-Mode Fdnr Circuit Element Using Capacitive Gyrators, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Michael M. Green

Electrical Engineering

A current-mode implementation of a frequency-dependent negative resistance (FDNR) element is presented using a novel capacitive gyrator. This FDNR element lends itself well to the design of low-pass ladder filters and its use will result in a more efficient integrated circuit implementation than filters that simulate floating inductors using resistive gyrators.
