Application Of Macro Material Flow Modeling To The Decision Making Process For Integrated Waste Management Systems, Samuel A. Vigil, Gregory M. Holter
Application Of Macro Material Flow Modeling To The Decision Making Process For Integrated Waste Management Systems, Samuel A. Vigil, Gregory M. Holter
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Computer models have been used for almost a decade to model and analyze various aspects of solid waste management. Commercially available models exist for estimating the capital and operating costs of landfills, waste-to-energy facilities and compost systems and for optimizing system performance along a single dimension (e.g. cost or transportation distance).
An alternative to the use of currently available models is the more flexible macro material flow modeling approach in which a macro scale or regional level approach is taken. Waste materials are tracked through the complete integrated waste management cycle from generation through recycling and reuse, and finally to …
Visible Light Emitting Diodes Fabricated From Soluble Semiconducting Polymers, Alan J. Heeger, David Braun
Visible Light Emitting Diodes Fabricated From Soluble Semiconducting Polymers, Alan J. Heeger, David Braun
Electrical Engineering
Visible light LEDs are produced having a layer of conjugated polymer which is cast directly from solution or formed as a gel-processed admixture with a carrier polymer. The LEDs can be formed so as to emit polarized light.

Cognitive Cooperation Through Visual Interaction, Erika Rogers
Cognitive Cooperation Through Visual Interaction, Erika Rogers
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The purpose of the paper is to describe a cooperative system which was designed to provide intelligent assistance in the domain of diagnostic radiology. The approach taken includes the collection and analysis of human performance data, cognitive modelling of the interaction between perception and problem solving. incorporation of this knowledge into a blackboard-based architecture. implementation of a prototype system and testing and evaluation of the prototype. These stages are described, and then discussed in the context of issues particularly relevant to the study of human-machine cooperation.

"Fight For Fertilizer!" Excrement, Public Health, And Mobilization In New China, Andrew D. Morris
"Fight For Fertilizer!" Excrement, Public Health, And Mobilization In New China, Andrew D. Morris
History
Andrew Morris is a doctoral student in modern Chinese history at University of California, San Diego. In October, 1994 he presented a paper entitled "The Republic of Taiwan and the Failure of Qjng Centralization," at the Western Conference of the Association of Asian Studies, Claremont, California. By the time this issue of the Joumaal is published, he will have presented another paper, "'Mastery Without Enmity': Tiyu (Athletics) in Early Republican China," at the West Coast Graduate Conference in Modern Chinese History, Berkeley, California, in April 1995.. Morris says, What I hoped to do in this paper was to show, in …
Electroluminescence And Photoluminescene Efficiency Of Poly(P-Phenylenevinylene) Deriatives, E. Staring, R. Demandt, David Braun, G. Rikken, Y. Kessener, A. Venhuizen, M. Van Knippenberg, M. Bouwmans

Electrical Engineering
Alkoxy, alkyl, and cyano derivatives of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) [PPV] are used as the emissive layers in light-emitting diodes [LEDs] to obtain luminescence from red to blue. We present the luminescence efficiency for these soluble PPV derivatives. comparing the photoluminescence [PL] yields with the electroluminescence [EL] yields. PL efficiency increases with the fraction of non-conjugated units. EL efficiency depends not only on the radiative recombination efficiency of the emitting material but also on carrier transport to and within the material. Efforts to improve the efficiency and long term stability of these polymer LEDs are challenged by efficient and balanced carrier …

Effects Of Imperfect Unipolarity On The Ionization Of Rydberg Atoms By Subpicosecond Half-Cycle Pulses, N. E. Tielking, Thomas J. Bensky, Robert R. Jones
Effects Of Imperfect Unipolarity On The Ionization Of Rydberg Atoms By Subpicosecond Half-Cycle Pulses, N. E. Tielking, Thomas J. Bensky, Robert R. Jones
Physics
Rydberg atoms are ionized by nearly unipolar, subpicosecond electromagnetic pulses. Deviations from a perfectly unidirectional pulse are found to alter substantially the ionization probability as a function of peak field. Quantitative agreement between classical theory and experiment is achieved if the pulse imperfections are significantly attenuated.
