Monitoring Nuclear Test Ban Treaties, David W. Hafemeister Apr 1995

Monitoring Nuclear Test Ban Treaties, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

With the end of the Cold War, the emphasis on monitoring nuclear weapons tests has shifted from the 1976 Threshold Test Ban Treaty (TTBT), which confined the US and USSR to a limit of 150 kilotons (kt), to the Comprehensive Test Ban (CTB) Treaty, which would ban all nuclear tests by the signatories. 1995 will be a watershed year to control the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) must be considered for renewal. The fate of the NPT is dependent on a successful CTB negotiation, because the two treaties are politically linked. This paper will cover …

A Computer-Based Tool For Introducing Turfgrass Species, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner Apr 1995

A Computer-Based Tool For Introducing Turfgrass Species, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

An essential component of an introductory turfgrass management course is the description of how turfgrass species are adapted to different cultural systems and environments. The objectives of this project were to develop an interactive program to introduce the characteristics of turfgrass species and their optimum environments and to evaluate the students' gain in understanding turf species characteristics through this approach. A self-contained application, Turf Species, was constructed using the SuperCard development tool. Turf Species consists of three sections including a self-paced tour of the species, a what if establishment section, and randomly composed reinforcement quizzes with automatic grading. Turf Species …

Liberal Studies

The structure of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-5,10,15,-20-tetraphenylporphyrin(2+) diacetate acetic acid dichloromethane solvate, C60H64N42+.2C2H3O2-.3C2H4-O2.CH2CI2, has been determined at 200K. The molecule is severely non-planar and adopts an $4 saddle shape. It is the most distorted member of the OETPP series reported to date, with displacements of the β- pyrrole C atoms from the plane of the four N atoms as great as 1.42 Å, and acute tilts of the phenyl rings relative to the porphyrin plane. The two acetate counterions act …

Reasserting A Prehistoric Tragedy Of The Commons: Reply To Lyman, Terry L. Jones, William R. Hilderbrandt Mar 1995

Reasserting A Prehistoric Tragedy Of The Commons: Reply To Lyman, Terry L. Jones, William R. Hilderbrandt

Social Sciences

R. Lee Lyman has challenged our assertion that prehistoric hunting of marine mammals along the west coast of North America approximated a prehistoric tragedy of the commons in which highly ranked migratory sea lions and fur seals were reduced by overexploitation, necessitating pursuit of smaller, more elusive harbor seals and sea otters late in time. In response, we review alternative theoretical perspectives, rebut Lyman's characterization of marine mammal reproductive behaviors, reanalyze seal and sea lion NISP data from the California and Oregon coasts, and reinterpret three regional prehistories. Because migratory pinnipeds need to breed on land, are vulnerable to terrestrial …

Price Competition Between Two International Firms Facing Tariffs, Eric O'N. Fisher, Charles A. Wilson Mar 1995

Price Competition Between Two International Firms Facing Tariffs, Eric O'N. Fisher, Charles A. Wilson

Economics

This paper examines the effects of tariffs on price setting duopolists selling a homogeneous product. The producers cannot segment geographically distinct markets. It provides a complete characterization of the equilibrium (mixed) strategies and analyzes the pattern of competition for different tariffs. If a country raises its tariff, the profits of both producers increase, although the protected firm typically benefits more than its foreign counterpart. Growth in one market may reduce the profits of the firm located in the other market.

Expression Of Anthocyanins In Callus Cultures Of Cranberry (Vaccinium Macrocarpon Ait), D. L. Madhavi, M. A.L. Smith, M. Dolores Berber-Jimenez Mar 1995

Expression Of Anthocyanins In Callus Cultures Of Cranberry (Vaccinium Macrocarpon Ait), D. L. Madhavi, M. A.L. Smith, M. Dolores Berber-Jimenez

Liberal Studies

Expression of anthocyanins and other flavonoids in callus cultures established from different parts of cranberry plant was investigated and the effect of explant source on the in vitro product was determined. Callus cultures were initiated from different parts of the plant in a modified Gamborg's medium with 5.37 μM α-naphthaleneacetic acid, 0.45 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and 2.32 μM kinetin in the dark at 25°C. Callus cultures accumulated anthocyanins only on exposure to light and maximum concentration was observed by day 12. The cultures had lower levels of anthocyanins and only cyanidin 3-galactoside, cyanidin 3-glucoside, and cyanidin 3-arabinoside were identified in …
