Ontario Beef Producers'attitudes About Artificial Insemination, Wayne H. Howard, John Cranfield
Ontario Beef Producers'attitudes About Artificial Insemination, Wayne H. Howard, John Cranfield
Agribusiness
Characteristics and attitudes of Ontario beef producers who use artificial insemination and those who use natural breeding are compared. Natural breeders are characterized as larger as well as more commercial and profit oriented. Time, convenience and problems with heat detection are the main problems natural breeders associate with artificial insemination.
Effects Of Hydrogen On Inp Light-Emitting Devices Etched In A Methane-Hydrogen Environment, Patricia Beck, Dennis J. Derickson, Forrest Kellert, Tim Bagwell
Effects Of Hydrogen On Inp Light-Emitting Devices Etched In A Methane-Hydrogen Environment, Patricia Beck, Dennis J. Derickson, Forrest Kellert, Tim Bagwell
Electrical Engineering
Research has been conducted on the physical damage and hydrogenation effects during RF plasma exposure and epitaxial growth in the III-V material system. Device consequences of this damage or chemical alteration have received less attention, particularly in active light emitting devices. This paper discusses these effects for lasers and edge emitting light-emitting diodes (EELEDs) which use a ridge waveguide structure. By using analysis techniques such as SIMS we have concluded that methane-hydrogen reactive ion etching of InP induces hydrogen levels in an active device which are high enough to significantly alter the device properties. The decrease in light output is …

Magnetic Force Microscopy Of The Submicron Magnetic Assembly In A Magnetotactic Bacterium, R. B. Proksch, T. E. Schäffer, B. M. Moskowitz, E. D. Dahlberg, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel
Magnetic Force Microscopy Of The Submicron Magnetic Assembly In A Magnetotactic Bacterium, R. B. Proksch, T. E. Schäffer, B. M. Moskowitz, E. D. Dahlberg, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
A magnetic force microscope (MFM) was used to image topography and magnetic forces from a chain of submicron single magnetic domain particles produced by and contained in isolated magnetotactic bacteria. The noncontact magnetic force microscope data were used to determine a value for the magnetic moment of an individual bacterial cell, of order 10−13 emu, consistent with the average magnetic moment of bacteria from the same sample, obtained by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. The results represent the most sensitive quantification of a magnetic force microscope image to date.

Spectral Reflectance From A Broccoli Crop With Vegetation Or Soilias Background: Influence On Immigration By Brevicoryne Brassicae And Myzus Persicae, Michael J. Costello
Spectral Reflectance From A Broccoli Crop With Vegetation Or Soilias Background: Influence On Immigration By Brevicoryne Brassicae And Myzus Persicae, Michael J. Costello
Horticulture and Crop Science
Light reflectance in five wavebands of the spectrum was measured from broccoli (Brassicae oleracea var.botrytis [L].) interplanted with leguminous cover crops (cover crop background) or broccoli grown as monoculture (bare soil background), and fertilized with compost or synthetic fertilizer. Alate Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Homoptera: Aphididae) were monitored in yellow pan water traps and on broccoli leaves. Reflectance intensity was higher with a background of bare soil at all wavebands except blue (400–455 nm) in the early-season. Intensity decreased as broccoli canopy cover increased at all wavebands except blue and green (515–550 nm), declining-most dramatically in …

Supersonic, Turbulent Flow Computation And Drag Optimization For Axisymmetric Afterbodies, Russell M. Cummings, H. T. Yang, Y. H. Oh
Supersonic, Turbulent Flow Computation And Drag Optimization For Axisymmetric Afterbodies, Russell M. Cummings, H. T. Yang, Y. H. Oh
Aerospace Engineering
The compressible, turbulent flow about an axisymmetric body was numerically studied using the MacCormack unsplit explicit algorithm applied to the mass-average Navier-Stokes equations solved in conjunction with the k-ε turbulence model of Jones and Launder. Numerical predictions of total body drag (pressure drag, skin friction drag, and base drag) were made for an axisymmetric body six diameters in length, with and without a boattail. Surface pressures and viscous layer profiles are compared with available wind tunnel data and are found to be in good agreement for both geometries. The Golden Section optimization method was used to optimize the body …
