This work was part of a larger project whose goals included the development of an information-processing model of visual interaction, and the subsequent design of an intelligent cooperative assistant for this domain.

Verbal protocol data was collected from eight radiologists (six residents and two experts) while they examined seven different computer-displayed chest x-rays. A brief overview of the methodology and analysis techniques is presented, together with specific results from one …

Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I (Igf-I) And Igf Binding Proteins: Potential Mediators Of The Influence Of Nutrition On Ovarian Function In The Heifer And Gilt, A.M. Benoit, K. Swanchara, P. Schoppee, Jeffrey D. Armstrong Jan 1996

Armstrong

Office of the President Scholarship

Nutrition influences age at puberty, duration of postpartum anestrus, and ovulation rate. Mechanisms mediating these effects, however, have not as yet been fully elucidated. Shifts in feed intake are accompanied by changes in circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (lGF-I), and somatotropin (ST). Feed restriction increases ST, decreases IGF-l, and shifts the proportions of IGF binding proteins (IGFBP). Active immunization against growth hormone releasing factor (GRFi) has been used to examine the effects of alterations in the somatotropic axis, independent of feed intake, on reproduction in prepubertal gilts and heifers. GRFi decreased the number of large follicles present on the …

Assessment Of The Compositional Influences On The Toughness Of Ticr2-Base Laves Phase Alloys, Katherine C. Chen, Samuel M. Allen, James D. Livingston Jan 1996

Assessment Of The Compositional Influences On The Toughness Of Ticr2-Base Laves Phase Alloys, Katherine C. Chen, Samuel M. Allen, James D. Livingston

Materials Engineering

Systematic studies of alloys based on TiCr, have been performed in order to improve the toughness of Laves phase intermetallics. The extent to which alloy compositions and annealing treatments influence the toughness was quantified by Vickers indentation. The single-phase Laves behavior was first established by studying stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric TiCr,. Next, alloying effects were investigated with ternary Laves phases based on TiCr2. Different microstructures of two-phase alloys consisting of (Ti,Cr)-bcc+TiCr2, were also examined. Various toughening theories based on vacancies, site-substitutions, crystal structure (C14, C36, or Cl5) stabilization, and the presence of a …

Dissolving The Divine: The Tragedy Of Identity In Genet's "Elle", Brian G. Kennelly Jan 1996

Dissolving The Divine: The Tragedy Of Identity In Genet's "Elle", Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

In his recent biography of Jean Genet, Edmund White tells of the dramatist's fascination with the Pope. Genet purportedly revealed to Laurent Boyer, his "exécuteur testamentaire" at Gallimard, that if ever the Pope invited him to the Vatican, he would accept in a second. The ecclesiastical pomp of the center of power of the Catholic Church intrigued him to no end (Jean Genet 497). For those who know anything of the life or works of France's celebrated "poète maudit," it probably comes as no surprise that Genet never did receive such an invitation. He did, however, indulge his fascination—and …

Commercial Adaptations Of Mechanical Stimulation For The Control Of Transplant Growth, Lauren C. Garner, Allen F. Langton, Thomas Bjorkman Jan 1996

Commercial Adaptations Of Mechanical Stimulation For The Control Of Transplant Growth, Lauren C. Garner, Allen F. Langton, Thomas Bjorkman

Horticulture and Crop Science

The commercial use of mechanical stimulation to control transplant growth is quite limited. To be commercially successful, the technique must be simple and flexible, and must not reduce plant quality. Brushing was applied to tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) seedlings growing at a density of 2100 plants m-2 by daily stroking with a piece of polystyrene. Ten or twenty daily strokes typically provided significant height control without plant damage. Increasing the interval between strokes to up to 10 minutes resulted in the same amount of height control as continuous brushing. There were typically no differences between treating the plants …

Students were tested using the Pre-algebra/algebra portion of the P-ACT+ and the Work Keys Applied Mathematics assessments. Student attitudes toward math …

Temporal Dynamics Of Coastal Antarctic Phytoplankton: Environmental Driving Forces And Impact Of 1991/92 Summer Diatom Bloom On The Nutrient Regimes, Mark A. Moline, Barbara B. Prezelin, Oscar Schofield, Raymond C. Smith Jan 1996

Temporal Dynamics Of Coastal Antarctic Phytoplankton: Environmental Driving Forces And Impact Of 1991/92 Summer Diatom Bloom On The Nutrient Regimes, Mark A. Moline, Barbara B. Prezelin, Oscar Schofield, Raymond C. Smith

Biological Sciences

Within the Palmer Long Term Ecological Research Program (PAL-LTER), a suite of environmental data sets were collected at a nearshore station throughout the 1991/92 austral summer. Seasonal changes are presented in the context of phytoplankton community ecology. Subseasonal fluctuations in sea-ice coverage, freshwater inputs, as well as wind driven and advective processes disrupting stratified surface waters, appeared to be the major driving forces affecting the timing, duration and demise of local phytoplankton blooms. During a large diatom-dominated bloom (~30 mg chl a m-3), macronutrients were depleted to detection limits (NO3--3, PO4-3< 0.03 mmol m-3) …

Effect Of Larval Swimming Duration On Success Of Metamorphosis And Size Of The Ancestrular Lophophore In Bugula Neritina (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt Jan 1996

Effect Of Larval Swimming Duration On Success Of Metamorphosis And Size Of The Ancestrular Lophophore In Bugula Neritina (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt

Biological Sciences

There is a growing realization that events during one portion of an organism's life cycle can have both subtle and dramatic effects on other stages in the life history. Lethal and sublethal effects associated with the duration of larval swimming in marine invertebrates were examined for the bryozoan Bugula neritina. Larvae were kept swimming up to a maximum of 28 h at 20{deg}C by exposure to continuous bright fluorescent illumination. At 4-h intervals, samples of 20-40 larvae were removed from bright illumination and were exposed to seawater containing 10 mM excess KCI, an inducer of metamorphosis in this species. …

Childhood Tomboyism And Adult Androgyny, Shawn Meghan Burn, A. Kathleen O'Neil, Shirley Nederend Jan 1996

Childhood Tomboyism And Adult Androgyny, Shawn Meghan Burn, A. Kathleen O'Neil, Shirley Nederend

Psychology and Child Development

Female university and community college students (N = 194) completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory and a 12-item tomboyism index. Subjects were predominantly Euro-American (71%). A multiple regression analysis was used to test the prediction that androgyny and masculinity would significantly predict tomboyism scores. The proportion of variance in tomboyism accounted for by masculinity was significant, but once masculinity was entered, no additional predictive value was added by the entry of androgyny or femininity. Tomboyism was not related to the development of expressive qualities such as compassion and sensitivity to the needs of others. However, tomboyism was positively related to some …

Hazardous Waste Management, Harold M. Cota, David Wallenstein Jan 1996

Hazardous Waste Management, Harold M. Cota, David Wallenstein

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Hazardous waste management is a broad and evolving field. Applicable state and federal regulations comprising over 60,000 pages are continually being updated. Many of these regulations overlap and are subject to differences in interpretation that often lead to court rulings. Regulations, economic pressures and public perception are forcing companies to rapidly change the way they manufacture products in order to minimize hazardous waste generation. Over 200 million tons of solid hazardous waste are generated annually in the United States. Huge quantities of hazardous waste deposited in landfills, ponds, fields, and other locations require removal or in situ treatment. Common hazardous …
