Improving Document Classification By Integrating Human-Crafted Semantic Knowledge, Lubomir Stanchev, Zachary Weinfeld
Improving Document Classification By Integrating Human-Crafted Semantic Knowledge, Lubomir Stanchev, Zachary Weinfeld
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Document classification is a pivotal task in various domains, warranting the development of robust algorithms. Among these, the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) algorithm, introduced by Google, has proven to perform well when fine-tuned for the task at hand. Leveraging transformer architecture, BERT demonstrates stellar language understanding capabilities. However, the integration of BERT with a range of approaches has shown potential for further enhancing classification accuracy. This paper investigates three techniques that leverage semantic understanding to improve the performance of document classification models trained with BERT. First, we balance corpora afflicted by imbalanced training data distributions. Next, we substitute …

Aged 539 Internship Report: Improving Cal Poly Rodeo Horses' Health And Fitness, Faith Star Mahallati
Aged 539 Internship Report: Improving Cal Poly Rodeo Horses' Health And Fitness, Faith Star Mahallati
Agricultural Education: Graduate Internship Reports
This study was conducted to help enhance the overall health and fitness of the horses on the Cal Poly Rodeo Team. Data was collected before and after implementing the StallGrazer feeders to reduce the risk of sand colic and improve feed efficiency. Data was collected and analyzed before and after the weekly barrel racing jackpot series to enhance horse fitness. The StallGrazer feeders reduced the risk of sand clear and forage waste and the barrel racing jackpots enhanced the fitness and performance of the horses in the test group.
Mechanism Of Seismic Liquefaction For Heterogeneous Soil, Radu Popescu, Pradipta Chakrabortty
Mechanism Of Seismic Liquefaction For Heterogeneous Soil, Radu Popescu, Pradipta Chakrabortty
Architectural Engineering
In addition to inducing uncertainty in the predicted response, natural spatial variability of soil properties affects the mechanical response of geotechnical structures. When a failure surface is involved in the response, this surface can deviate from its theoretical location to pass through weaker zones of material. For the case of seismically induced soil liquefaction, it has been found that a larger amount of excess pore water pressure is generated in a soil exhibiting small-scale variability of its properties than in the corresponding uniform soil having geomechanical properties equal to the average properties of the heterogeneous soil. An explanation for this …

Testing Of Recycled Polypropylene As A Viable Structural Material, Alexandre C. Bouquet, Colin W. Waterhouse, Gianna M. Rocca, Alycia A. Darby
Architectural Engineering
Over the course of 10 weeks, experiments were performed on extruded Polypropylene (PP) to determine the feasibility of its use in construction. Motivated by environmental concerns, the project aimed to explore sustainable alternatives to conventional building materials. Polypropylene, classified as a type 5 plastic according to the Resin Identification Code (RIC), possesses favorable properties such as durability, chemical resistance, and recyclability, making it a promising candidate for construction applications. Type 5 plastics are commonly used in various industries, including packaging, automotive, textiles, and consumer goods. In construction, PP is primarily utilized in applications such as piping systems, insulation, roofing materials, …

Cal Poly Craft Center Wedging Tables, Cooper Christopher Strong
Construction Management
The Craft Center, located on Cal Poly's campus, is where students can unwind from stressful coursework and engage in activities like pottery, surfboard shaping, and stained glass. The pottery studio needed new wedging tables, which are essential for removing air from clay before shaping it. The project involved building two new 7’ x 2.5’ tables that would fit well in the space and be durable. Designed to be 33” tall, these tables are accessible to students of varying heights. They feature a concrete surface that is both durable and porous, helping to absorb some moisture during use. The previous tables …
Reinstatement Of The Poly Canyon Caretaker Program Through The Development Of A Tiny Home Community, Leily Martin
Reinstatement Of The Poly Canyon Caretaker Program Through The Development Of A Tiny Home Community, Leily Martin
Construction Management
The Poly Canyon Experimental Structures Laboratory, through its Design/Build program, is unique in the educational opportunity it provides Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) students. However, since the conclusion of the Caretaker Program in 2011, the facility’s structures have deteriorated due to vandalism, purposeful destruction, and weathering. This study examines the perspectives of CAED students, the interim CAED Dean, Kevin Dong, and Cal Poly Risk Manager, Mike Morgan, on the effectiveness in reinstating the Caretaker Program through the development of a tiny home community. Results indicated educational value in this facility, so addressing these issues must occur …
