Observations Of Nonlinear Internal Waves At A Persistent Coastal Upwelling Front, Ryan K. Walter, Marek Stastna, C. Brock Woodson, Stephen G. Monismith Apr 2016

Observations Of Nonlinear Internal Waves At A Persistent Coastal Upwelling Front, Ryan K. Walter, Marek Stastna, C. Brock Woodson, Stephen G. Monismith

Physics

We collected high-resolution observations of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) at a persistent upwelling front in the shallow coastal environment (~20 m) of northern Monterey Bay, CA. The coastal upwelling front forms between recently upwelled waters and warmer stratified waters that are trapped in the bay (upwelling shadow). The front propagates up and down the coast in the along-shore direction as a buoyant plume front due to modulation by strong diurnal wind forcing. The evolution of the coastal upwelling front, and the subsequent modulation of background environmental conditions, is examined using both individual events and composite day averages. We demonstrate that …

Predicting Changes To Source Code, Justin James Roll Apr 2016

Predicting Changes To Source Code, Justin James Roll

Master's Theses

Organizations typically use issue tracking systems (ITS) such as Jira to plan software releases and assign requirements to developers. Organizations typically also use source control management (SCM) repositories such as Git to track historical changes to a code-base. These ITS and SCM repositories contain valuable data that remains largely untapped. As developers churn through an organization, it becomes expensive for developers to spend time determining which software artifact must be modified to implement a requirement. In this work we created, developed, tested and evaluated a tool called Class Change Predictor, otherwise known as CCP, for predicting which class will implement …

Effect Of Reduced Sodium Cheese On The Growth Of Pathogenic Bacteria And Inactivation Of Listeria Innocua Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction With Co2, Suyapa Padilla Antunez Apr 2016

Effect Of Reduced Sodium Cheese On The Growth Of Pathogenic Bacteria And Inactivation Of Listeria Innocua Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction With Co2, Suyapa Padilla Antunez

Master's Theses

Listeria monocytogenes continues to challenge the dairy industry in causing post-process contamination of cheeses. To reduce risk of contamination, it is crucial to understand the growth and survival of pathogenic bacteria in cheese products and to develop post-process mitigation strategies. This study evaluated the fate of pathogens in reduced and regular sodium Mozzarella cheese, and the potential of Supercritical Fluid Extraction with CO2 (SFE) to reduce Listeria innocua on Mozzarella and Queso Fresco. The survival of L. monocytogenes, Salmonella, and E.coli O157:H7 (2-3 log CFU/g) in reduced sodium Mozzarella (1.62%), compared to regular sodium Mozzarella cheese (2.15%) …

Common Arguments For The Moral Acceptability Of Eating Meat: A Discussion For Students, Dan Lowe Mar 2016

Common Arguments For The Moral Acceptability Of Eating Meat: A Discussion For Students, Dan Lowe

Between the Species

This paper is a teaching tool which instructors of animal ethics may assign to students to help them evaluate those students’ most frequent arguments for the moral acceptability of eating meat. Specifically, the paper examines (and finds inadequate) the arguments that eating meat is morally acceptable because it is (1) historically widespread, (2) necessary, and (3) natural. The aim of discussing these arguments is to pave the way for a more fruitful and focused discussion of the canonical texts of the animal ethics literature.

T6ss Expression Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Intraspecific Competition, Alex Campbell Mar 2016

T6ss Expression Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Intraspecific Competition, Alex Campbell

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has reached an alarming level. The recently discovered type VI secretion system (T6SS) appears to be a bacterial defense mechanism that could potentially become involved with addressing this concern. Previous studies suggest Vibrio spp. may express T6SS. In this study, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a common foodborne pathogen, is used as a model to study T6SS. The objectives of this study were to evaluate culturing conditions that would stimulate swarming motility in strains of V. parahaemolyticus and to detect for the presence of T6SS based on phenotypic criteria. Different media (BHI, TSAS), agar concentration (0.7%, 1%, 2%) …

Effects Of Food Consumption On Neurogenesis In Juvenile Python Regius, Stacey Habroun Mar 2016

Effects Of Food Consumption On Neurogenesis In Juvenile Python Regius, Stacey Habroun

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Neurogenesis is an important and vastly unexplored area in reptiles. While the ability to generate new brain cells in the adult mammalian brain is limited, reptiles are able to regenerate large populations of neuronal cells. What makes pythons a particularly interesting subject in this field is their characteristic specific dynamic action (SDA) response after food intake with an increase in metabolic rate in order to process the meal. Further, they exhibit impressive plasticity in their digestive and cardiovascular physiology due to the sheer magnitude of the increase in organ growth that occurs after a meal to allow digestion and to …

Factors Influencing Hindgut Fermentation Characteristics Of The Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys Pardalis): Survey Of The Microbiome, Breanna P. Modica Mar 2016

Factors Influencing Hindgut Fermentation Characteristics Of The Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys Pardalis): Survey Of The Microbiome, Breanna P. Modica

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Novel fecal microbiome identification of mature female leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis, n = 16) fed exclusively one of three, nutritionally complete, pelleted diets was evaluated in a blind, complete randomized design study. Two diets included insoluble fiber (powdered cellulose) consisting of either 2.0 mm or 0.2 mm length. There were no differences in diversity indices (J’ and H’) of total OTUs by diet, with and without unidentified sequences. Analysis of phyla similarity by diet revealed three distinct groups with > 92% similarity. Analysis of genera similarity revealed two distinct groups with > 80% similarity. At both phyla and genera levels, fecal microbiomes …

Understanding The Transition From Dispersive Larva To Benthic Adult: A Study Of The Environmental Factors That Impact Kelletia Kelletii Larval Settlement, Megan Wilson Mar 2016

Understanding The Transition From Dispersive Larva To Benthic Adult: A Study Of The Environmental Factors That Impact Kelletia Kelletii Larval Settlement, Megan Wilson

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

There is a paucity of information concerning the growth, development, and behavior of early life history stages of Kelletia kelletii, a marine predatory gastropod and emerging fisheries species. This is a significant barrier to our current understanding of the population dynamics of this species, as the early life stages are responsible for the dispersion of individuals. For this project, Kelletia kelletii specimen were collected and spawned, their egg capsules incubated, and their larvae reared in a laboratory setting. We measured the size of individual larvae at each developmental stage within the capsule, and fit several growth functions to the data. …

Food Sustainability At Cal Poly: Comparative Analysis Between Global And Local Distribution Of Produce Items, Ariana Brandao, Elizabeth Jacobs, Olivia Surnow, Stacy Olsen Mar 2016

Food Sustainability At Cal Poly: Comparative Analysis Between Global And Local Distribution Of Produce Items, Ariana Brandao, Elizabeth Jacobs, Olivia Surnow, Stacy Olsen

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Baseline data for Cal Poly produce items purchased in 2014, were generated using food miles and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of transportation related impacts measured in units of global warming potential. A regional simulation of a local food system compiled using Harvest Santa Barbara serves as a model of a regional wholesale produce distributor. Research objectives aim to identify produce items that would significantly decrease food miles and transportation related impacts when sourced through a regional food distributor. Comparative analysis between the global and local food distribution systems, associated with 59 produce types illustrate tomatoes having the most significant impact …

Point-Of-Care Diagnostic Device For The Quantitative Analysis Of Human Estradiol At Low-Picomolar Concentrations, E Brandon Strong, Brittany A. Lore, Zachary B. Hoffman

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

A fundamental issue in healthcare is the development of cost-effective and reliable diagnostic assays. While still a relatively new field, paper-based analytical devices are emerging as inexpensive and portable methods of providing healthcare professionals with real-time diagnostic information. Furthermore, these devices can often be used at the point of care, thus eliminating the need for a myriad of time-consuming laboratory techniques. While the original goal of this project was to develop a paper-based lateral flow immunoassay capable of colorimetric quantitation, the device design was altered over the course of the past year. Upon testing, the originally proposed lateral flow assay …

The Association Between Vitamin A Status Or Supplementation And Hiv/Aids, Mikaela Kathleen Curtis Mar 2016

The Association Between Vitamin A Status Or Supplementation And Hiv/Aids, Mikaela Kathleen Curtis

Food Science and Nutrition

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has infected millions of people since the start of the epidemic in the early 1980s. HIV is the etiologic agent of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which has taken millions of lives. It is extremely difficult for particular populations to receive medication to treat HIV infection and prevent the progression of HIV to AIDS. Multiple studies have examined the effect of vitamin A on HIV infection, due to its immune stimulating effects. It is unclear whether an association exists between vitamin A and different aspects of HIV. This review examined the effect of vitamin A …

The Effect Of Xenon Pulsed-Light Technology On Biofilm Adhered To Stainless Steel Surfaces, Stephanie Jacquez Mar 2016

The Effect Of Xenon Pulsed-Light Technology On Biofilm Adhered To Stainless Steel Surfaces, Stephanie Jacquez

Master's Theses

In food processing, inadequate surface sanitation procedures lead to the formation of biofilms in which bacteria attach and aggregate in a hydrated polymeric matrix of their own synthesis. Formation of these sessile communities and their inherent resistance to existing sanitation procedures and agents are at the root of the risk of bacterial infections for consumers. Due to this existing problem, an effective method for reducing biofilm formation in dairy processing equipment is necessary for dairy products processing. Ultraviolet Pulsed light Technology has shown a positive effect in eliminating microorganism populations on food products. The objective of this work is to …

Coeds Come To The Cal Poly Campus: The Return Of Female Students To Cal Poly, Kaylin A. Embrey Mar 2016

Coeds Come To The Cal Poly Campus: The Return Of Female Students To Cal Poly, Kaylin A. Embrey

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

During the years between 1929 and 1956, women were banned from attending Cal Poly. Women were among the first classes of Cal Poly students, but the crisis that was the Great Depression led to financial strains on higher education; ultimately Cal Poly chose to resolve burdens by eliminating women from the student body. After more than a quarter century of an all-male student population, women were re-admitted in 1956. With such an abrupt reversal in policy, the now coeducational institution faced many challenges. How would the male students respond? What were the expectations of the women students, and did these …
